Wow. I have listened to Tom Sawyer and Who Are You probably a thousand times and never noticed the similarity until I read your comments and watched your video. Good catch!
Ive been playing bass since 1978 and playing professionally since 86. You are by far my favorite bassist on youtube. Always enjoy your videos brother. Keep rockin!
yea my Dad picked one up for $100 at a music shop probably 17 years ago .. glad to see they're going up in value for having amazing tone .. They're def not a bass you want to play on stage (pretty heavy) but for home/studio they're great
The first Who song I ever heard, was on a compilation cd that me and my Dad used to play in his car all the time. I was hooked onto them almost instantly, still love them. I was supposed to be going to see them on the 23rd March 2020, the exact day that the UK went into lockdown, so was then resheduled to the 25th March this year, which would have been today, which also happens to be my birthday (I turned 16 today. I have just been informed that the whole tour has been completely cancelled... gutted to say the least, but very understanding given the world situation right now. To see The Who on my 16th birthday would have been awesome😔😔😔.
Wow, I'm sorry to hear that the tour was cancelled, but I hope you had a very Happy Birthday nonetheless. To be honest with you, I've seen The Who a number of times, both with John Entwistle and without. It's really not the same without him. That being said, I did see Roger Daltrey perform Tommy (and some other Who songs) with an orchestra in 2019 and "that" was phenomenal... better than any, post-Entwistle, Who show I've ever seen.
Now I gotta go listen to the whole album.... Love how Keith Moon's chair says 'not to be taken away' on the album cover.... and then he goes and dies on us
One of the first times I saw anybody playing a bass was in high school. A guy in the concert band had a Peavy just like yours and I sat in the music room and watched him jam "Iron Man" and "Spirit of Radio" with a drummer. My jaw hung open and I knew I wanted to be a part of the rock music world. Thanks for the memory.
EXCELLENT Cover Troy!!! FIRST,lemme say I sure hope You start feeling much,MUCH better as we've come to the cold and flu season (although that flu-bug has been making it's way for a few MONTHS now already!!!) Anyway..........I 100% AGREE with most other commenters on here, the Tone of that Peavey,is just Heaven!!! Also,I never really even NOTICED that tiny "error" at 1:30,until You pointed it out to me!!! Lol. To ME,I always thought that little inconsistent "blip",was Intentional by John!!! Lol. (who knows, maybe it WAS!?!? Lol.) But speaking as a drummer.................Your right...........at the time of this album's recording,Keith was in dire-straights with his drinking, his attitude and his weight!!! As he RARELY played his "high-hat" on a consistent basis, for ANY reason!?!? Although,in this part of the song,it's perfectly understandable why he simply would focus on the high-hat to help fill-in that "quiet" part of the song, but MY GUESS would be,due to his extreme-alcoholism..........that he probably had QUITE ALOT of Booze already in his blood during the recording of this song, which is why You hear a few extra (or a few "missed") "tats" on the high-hat,during that 2:40 run!!! Of course,I'm just giving OPINION here folks,so no need to bombard me with negative comments explaining how "wrong" I am about that!!! Lol. Feel Better Troy, and as always,AWESOME JOB!!! :)
I miss my T40,, it wasn't something i played all the time but was enjoyable when i did,, i hardly had to retune mine eather,,, awesome bass,,, i hope you get to feeling better soon, seems like theirs some kind of crud going around here to, maybe Lynn will bring you back something special, i my self has always liked that song who are you ☺
I love the sound of that bass and I think it looks cool too.... I read that the Who were considering getting another drummer to play in the studio on this album and were going to keep Moon as their 'live' drummer. Moon was given an ultimatum to work on his drumming and he ended up recording the whole albums drum racks in about a week. The sad thing about this album is all 4 members were not present in the studio at the same time during the recording. I particularly like Johns bass work on 'Trick of the Light'
Dude you absolutely shred this, it sucks that my generation isnt as indulged into the ancient rockstars or GODS as i call them Brilliant cover man, keep it living on!!
Thanks so much, John. Looking forward to seeing The Who in a couple of weeks. I know they are not what they once were (I was able to see them twice with Entwistle), but I'll take what I can get... plus, they are playing with an orchestra.
our department at work had a full meltdown on friday, so i'm not looking to go back to work tomorrow either. at least i have your epic bass playing to distract me until then.
Nice job Troy. That Broadway show Is based on the province I live in called Newfoundland Labrador. Gander took a lot of planes that day. The airport just 20 minutes from me (YJT -Stephenville Airport) had about 9 I think. It was a time when such a horrific tragedy brought out the best in people. I'll always remember those days. I heard the musical "Come From Away" is the best but have not saw it yet. In Newfoundland we call any tourists from outside the area and visiting "Come From Away's" That's where the name came from. They were all come from away's on those planes.
Nice job Troy. I always wanted a T40. My first bass was a T20. On a side note, we live in Stamford so we go to Stew's flagship store in Norwalk. Annual tradition is to take the kids there and pick out some new ornaments for the tree and grab dinner from the hot food area. That's where we'll be Thursday night. Lol
First bass I ever played was a T-40, had no idea in those days what a fantastic instrument it is. I managed to acquire an Ovi Magnum III this last year. T-40 is next on my list. I am clearly obsessed with preternaturally heavy and thunderous basses. As always, this sounds fantastic Troy. Keep em coming!!!!!
Wow, nice job TJH3113, and on one of my favorite basses....I have three of them. I have Fenders but they rarely see the light of day because I love the tone of this bass. Keep up the great playing.
Said it a million times.. Wish I still had my T-40... That thing sounds INCREDIBLE! As far as leaving the "error" in. At the end of "Fire" by Hendrix Noel Redding went to the beginning part instead of the walking type line (when it is fading). They left it. It was done if the overall feel was there I believe. So vastly different than today.. Even "punching in" is going away in favor of "copy and paste".
Masterful job! You look like you were having fun and making it look easy. I’ve had a hard time with getting the opening bass run in the intro. But I shall persevere!
just got a T-40 shipped in about a month ago and i love the hell out of it. the videos in which you use yours was a big help in my research and ultimately my decision to take a chance on it. as of now it's my favorite piece of gear that i own
oh i love it, i just got it properly set up and it plays like a dream. the tone i'm getting out of it is somewhere between a precision and a rick, it's gnarly as hell
11th Like Woot! Dayum your bass sounds so awesome. I would have to practice all day with a bass that sounds like that. Great job! My best friend's cousin is the current touring bassist for The Who. 😀
Great cover! My dad and I love your videos. He's mupes2112. We both love rush and are both bassists. Could you do a cover of into the void by Sabbath? I personally think it's the most sinister and coolest bass line from any Sabbath song. Thanks man. Keep up the good work

"The Ox" One of my all time favorite Bassist. The only problem I have, is trying to figure out that great slide at the very beginning? Great cover brother🤙
Great cover! Yes, I can hear that Tom Sawyer thing ! haha Funny cuz there are many Rush songs that probably were influenced by these many Who tunes, by the way, another band which I love! You should try Won't Get Fooled again or Real Me! Would love to see ya playing those!
awesome! I have a white one that had the plastic still on it, but I'd be embarrassed to tell you what I payed for it. It was in "time capsule" condition though.
Great video, love this song. Reading the description made me laugh. I live about 20 minutes from Stew Leonard's in Danbury. Always fun to go there once in a while. Cheers!
When Stew's was in Norwalk our band used to play there. That was back in the early 80's. We had a blast checking out all the lonely soccer moms. wearing Daisy Dukes and push up bras. :-)
Great job! If it takes a pair of glasses to perform like John Entwistle, so be it. If I play without glasses I can hardly find the fingerboard, let alone see individual strings. :-)
I bought a T40 brand new , same as that when they came out. Still have it in brand new shape. Loved the way it played/sound but got hook on Ric's and put it away. I'd part with one of the Ric's before I get rid of though.
I like little mistakes in a song. It makes the final product more "organic", more honest. Today's recordings are so perfect and sterile that they make the listener uncomfortable. More unconfortable than a few imperfections here and there would do. But I must say that I too keep wondering how some mistakes end up in the final version. Was it a band's decision? Or the producer's? Maybe a budget limitation? Did anyone even notice the mistake until the record was ready? Maybe all those uncertanties are what make these 'bloopers' so fascinating.
In my experience they leave in mistakes because they don't want to fix it. Sometimes mistakes aren't noticed until mixdown and then they'd have to get the bass player in, set up and then re record. Most producers don't want to spend much time on the bass as the drums or vocals. I agree though, little mistakes sound more human. Listening to isolated bass tracks make me feel like my idols can make mistakes too. And that's fine w me.
Another good job Troy, great track!! ... now i'm having trouble deciding what bass i like the sound of best, the Ric' or this Peavey .... also just goes to show good workmanship if an instruments "as you left it" and needs no tuning ... i have one that i can just pick up and play and that's a 40 year old cheapo Kay bass surprisingly enough!!
Great song choice and I'm loving the drive/tone here. If I had to guess at the settings I would say the bridge pu has the tone wide open and the neck pu tone is rolled back... Maybe more volume on the neck pu too... I'm just curious
Thanks. I think I did something like you described. Normally, I insist on both pick ups being full up and equally balanced because I'll never remember the settings.
@@toddheeter9075 Townshend is an iconic guitar player of course but we all know that when it comes to solos, he's not an expert haha. If its an acoustic solo, I think theres so much more chances that Entwistle thas recorded it.

Sorry for the delayed response. I haven't done the song you mentioned but I posted "The Voice" a few weeks back and I've got a couple of other ones off to the side. Thanks.
Do you have tabs for this version? Or references to where I can find tabs to play this version? The rest I'm finding aren't quite right. That sounds epic.
I'd love to see you do Won't get fooled again.
I suspect the 27 of us are still waiting...c'mon!
Live version hehe
Same bro
Great Entwistle!! My favorite Bass player!! Great Cover!!
Thanks a lot Marcos!

Aw, thank you for the very kind words. I appreciate them.
Beautiful technique !🤘
Thanks a lot!
Can't thank you enough for your attention to detail! This was like the next best thing to a lesson from Entwistle himself. Awesome tone too!
Thanks for the kind words.
Hah! I have a loop of Who Are You for my ringtone. Great job, as usual.
Thanks.
I'm probably in the minority here but I think that's your best sounding bass. Just love that fat, rich sound. Great cover by the way!
t-40 is amazing I own 3 basses and it's my favorite .. you can get any tone you want out of it
So impressed by the sound that I just started pricing some online. Would be a good add to my collection.

That Peavey bass...huge in every respect...is the only bass I've heard that sounds like a Rickenbacker.
I have played bass for quite a few years now man that's one hell of a Peavey t40 you got there
Really? Me too! Haha. Yes, they are great instruments...the most active sounding passive bass I've ever heard.

There are still plenty out there in great shape and reasonably priced.
I used to have one of those Peavey T-40 basses just like that one. I regret ever selling it, the neck was phenomenal.
They come up for sale quite often, in good shape and for reasonable prices. I think they are very nice basses.
Rough and ready! I love this Troy!!! Marvine :-) I know who you are............ "-)
Haha...thank you Marvine, I'm glad you liked it.
Back for another round. Good god you make that bass sound good man. 😎

I did "Hitch a Ride" a while back.
Nice! It's funny you uploaded this one, especially since I've been in the process of learning this one. This will help a bunch.

Thanks. I'll check it out.
Great job emulating Thunder Fingers!

Finally! another song by the who! Great job!
Thanks a lot.
I never noticed the similarity between this and Tom Sawyer until you pointed it out. To return the favor, both Spirit of Radio and Don't Stop Believin' share the same verse progressions. You can switch mid-song and it still works.
Great job, one day I hope!
Thanks. Don't hope, do it!
Absolutely LOVE the peavey T40
Yes, beast of a bass, it is.
Loved the Ox's bassplaying, great tribute. As for similarities to Tom Sawyer, Peart is a Moon fan IIRC, so it's not out of school with the data.
Thanks. Sister Disco also had some similarities with a section of Cygnus X1.
What a beautiful intro, love that sound
Glad you liked it! Thank you.
T-40!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sound too good!!!
I own mostly all Peaveys, but have yet to get that one!!!

Thanks. Dumb luck on the tone.
nice! You def look like you enjoy playing that.
Thanks. That's odd.
Amazing tone

im after a peavey t40 but hard to find one in the uk and you have two a rare white one and a standerded colour are they going up in value
I have a Peavey bass like that but I never made it sound that good.
Not every bass agrees with every player. We all sound better on some basses than others.
Amazing work Troy! Your collection is so impressive. I've always wanted a T-40. Are they noticeably heavier than normal basses?
Thanks. They are heavy but the Wal is probably heavier.
I expected you to play that "solo" in the middle of song. is that really a bass solo
It's actually an acoustic guitar solo.

Do you have tabs for this version? Or references to where I can find tabs to play this version? The rest I'm finding aren't quite right. That sounds epic.
No, I’m sorry, but I don’t have tabs. I play by ear and memory. If I had them, it would be welcome to them.
