When I was homeless I used my grandmothers address on the application to get a job (not enough to pay rent) but I could afford to keep my $10 planet fitness membership. I slept in the locker rooms dressing room unbothered. Ate whatever I could get my hands on while saving the money from my job to get a car. After I got my car I could get a better job in the next town over to pay for an apartment. That’s the story of how I beat homelessness. I’m 19 btw
I was in the same place in August. I'm also 19. I was down for about a month and a half. I got a job at a restaurant as an assistant manager and bought myself food from that. I had a backpack full of clothes, water and a toothbrush. I slept outside of restaurants when they were closed and left before the opening crew so no one would notice me. Either that or I'd sleep in a shed in the back of the store I worked at. I eventually found someone with a spare bedroom that I could rent out and here I am.
Alexus Benjamin I’m glad you made it out of that sinkhole my friend. Some people never make it out. We are a testament to all the young folk who aspire to do something great but think the task is too overwhelming. If you fight long and hard enough you can accomplish anything in your path and more.

I was homeless a few years ago for 4 months, This video really hit home. I'm in a much better quality of life now, but that experience left me never taking anything for granted. Thanks for shedding more light on this.
I am homeless and have been for way to long however I really appreciate the making of this video for so many reasons that I cannot express all of my thoughts. We are not diseased and I say that because like he explained he was looked at in a different way which is at least I believe the worst part of being homeless. Secondly getting anything from food, money, toiletries, (someone just gave me a zero degree sleeping bag recently), to clean socks- this one is huge, and even just a smile. A smile or a wave hello goes along way when your treated like your below low if that is even a thing. There is just one thing that this video could not illustrate and that is when you first actually become homeless. There are so many thoughts sprinting like Usain Bolt through your mind its overwhelming. How did I get here? What am I going to do? I am scared! How am I going to survive, I don't know anything! Am I going to be OK? Where am I going to sleep? I give him credit for even trying but to go out and know that in 3 days it's going to go back to normal again and that it is going to be over is so much different than it actually is being a reality. Sorry for the long comment, I could write a book on this topic (maybe I should). Its really hard being homeless so if you could next time you see someone down and out just appreciate what you have and what we don't! Thank you. -D.G-
Hi, am a truck driver and this channel keeps me focused on the road. Normally I usually suspect homeless people are addicted crackheads but after listening to this episode I gave a homeless man my sandwich from my lunchbox because I didn’t know if the man had eaten that day or where his next meal would come from. In a sense you changed my perspective about homeless people.
I know this is three years later lol, but that’s awesome to read & you did the right thing. I have a pretty strict “Give to him who asks you” policy, simply because I can never really know their situation but either way I’m fortunate enough to not have to be the one asking.
I've been homeless. It's no picnic, but you learn the ropes. Hook up with somebody else because to a degree, you must have a little trust. I found out where to be warm when I slept and how to make sure I got fed. Now, I do try to help others who are still in that space. I do believe in karma...
I had been homeless for 22 years trying figure out what "home" was. I was literally homeless for 3 1/2 years. Not every city has shelters and it isnt easy. But to add on top of it you get stares, brutal fights, and deaths. I had to fight off wildlife and hide my camp as in my town the cops will destroy entire camps just for being a blemish to the city. And because you are homeless you cant recover that last photo of your family that keeps you concentrated on surviving. You dont have service on your phone. People dont always help. And it was the hardest time cuz in a camp you cant be too picky about the company of your camp. Mostly because you dont kno the habits or dislikes of any given person. I had to help my camp by providing something. I couldn't just stay in my tent and hide. I had to use my knowledge of berries, climb trees for eggs, and my axe that i had found in the woods in an old abandoned shack 10 miles away. Its not a joke. And had the guy from this video been noticed he very well could have been killed, hurt, or robbed just for doing a video about being homeless
I was homeless for a while when I first got out of the military. It's pretty rough but it's possible to get threw. I went to the library and actually made a resume and filled out job applications. Then I would go in wearing my nicest cloths saying I applied and eventually got a job. I am very fortunate but this video made me reminisce on those moments.
It is possible for some but not all. Think back and imagine this time you don't know how to read or write. You have a bad leg where you can't walk much. You hear voices that others don't or have phobias of people or technology.
@@ramgaming2540 The food with damaged packaging but still completely safe gets thrown in the trash, or donated to food banks. Homeless, or people that really need food but can't afford it will gladly use those items. OP meant that if we left those items on the shelf, eventually it will go to the needy. I've had to visit food banks before. A lot of items I've received had nothing wrong besides the packaging. I've also worked in a supermarket before. Seen the amount of food that gets tossed.
Is there any thing else you'd like to mention for any fellow person here if they are unlucky enough to fall in the pit of homelessness? or anything in general?
I've been homeless in a few different ways (urban, tent in the woods, and now mobile living in a converted truck thank goodness) and I really appreciate this episode and the integrity of the way this challenge was done. I love how you guys leverage your platform to spread empathetic and realistic messages like this. The end is especially admirable; I completely agree that the majority of people on the street are compassionate. Something I've said since I was an urban street kid is that "98% of people were always warning me about how bad 98% of people are". I'm really grateful you guys are giving that kind of humanizing insight to your audience. You're really helping to positively influence a new generation to be more aware and have more perspective on lives less privileged than their own. Great work, thank you.
@@tofudog5699 Aww that's really sweet, thanks :) Yeah since I wrote this comment I've been fortunate to be able to go back to school and I'm almost done paying for a tiny bit of remote land that I'm going to build a cabin on, so definitely making progress! I appreciate the kind wishes. Hope your life is going well too mate!
I'm homeless WITH kids (and its not the first time) and that's exactly what I thought! And no, I'm not a drug addict or anything. That's why they looked at him funny. They assume if you're homeless, you must be mentally ill or addicted to something.
@Jackbro82 Seriously, if you can help, my birthday is July 2nd(tomorrow) and all I want is to go out to eat with my kids. Even if we have to split something.
Nah man y'all are completely missing the point and being way too harsh. It's WAY more helpful at scale to reduce food waste and thus improve the economy, in terms of foundational changes that help unhoused people. The VAST majority of food put in dumpsters by grocery stores and restaurants is destroyed intentionally by mixing with bleach etc. due to liability risks from people taking it, so the idea of intentionally leaving some food to be thrown out is moot in nearly all cases anyway -- and the fact of the matter is, choosing only pristine food/packaging really creates a lot of economic loss and inefficiency which contributes to people not being able to make a living wage. Before anyone jumps down my throat with some confused naive rant: I'm unhoused now, I've been homeless or housing insecure at any given time for several years, I work with tons of other unhoused people in founding a nonprofit related to these issues, and I've put a lot of study into this. You kids need to zoom out on the topic and consider the greater context here before leaping to shortsighted judgments.
This struck a chord with me. My mother, brother, and myself were always on the move because my biological father got involved with the wrong people. The closest i've been to homeless was living in my moms car when we were pretty young and eating timed out mcdonalds food, bless my moms boss she let that slide as an employee to feed her kids. Since escaping that situation, we've always been in the really low income bracket and i've done things i'm not particularly proud of to make rent and get food. I'm thankful that i've been able to hold down a flat with my family before and now with roomates as i'm trying to go to college so that I may support myself better with future employment. The thing I really empathized with is how he was being stared at and judged based on his presentation. I frequently get the same treatment but for the reason that i'm blind and walk with a white cane. My friends always let me know when i'm being given the stink eye. somehow both that people assume that i'm getting special privilages and treatment just standing in line like everybody else, and also like i'm just broken, a walking freakshow or something to that effect. I aggree with and promote sentiments made at the end and that is that beyond a persons appearence, there is a human being that is just trying to exist and survive and a small act of kindness goes such a long way even something as small as treating someone with respect and kindness. I'm incredibly thankful for kindness and generocity shown to me by total strangers, and even though I don't have means, I try to give back with my time to help others. This isn't a contest, i'm well aware of those who have it much worse than I, but I thought I would share my perspective. Have a great day or night and stay safe.
I guess the danger part depends on where you are. I was living in my truck for a little while. The worst part of the day was night time, finding a spot where I could park and not be harassed. Most of the other homeless people I met were incredibly helpful, sharing knowledge and whatever they had with me. There were regular people who were unbelievably kind. I went to cash in some returnable bottles one day. One woman left her ticket in the machine for me. Another man gave me a shopping cart full of bottles. And then he gave me $10. I was almost $30 ahead even before I cashed in my own cans and bottles. I also found out that only about half of the people I met and talked to (not very hard as homeless people are very willing to tell their story if you are willing to listen) were addicted to drugs or alcohol. People had lost their housing for all sorts of reasons. Foreclosure, medical reasons, bad relationships, mental illness, etc. With the cost of housing becoming a major problem, there will be more and more people living on the streets and no one should judge. I met several people who did have jobs. They simply didn't make enough to afford housing.
I haven't been homeless. But, I was paying around $700 a month in credit card debt. With rent, food, car payments, and other expenses it all adds up. I've gone to food shelf/banks, and volunteered there in the past. I've gotten WIC and welfare when I didn't work for a long period of time, too.
Thank you for doing this. I was homeless on and off for about 5-6 years, nearly two years on the streets, and people really don't understand anything about it. I had no idea before about how tough it is, especially as a female. I was on the streets for 7 months of my pregnancy, horrible stuff!!! Everybody is human, and you'll never know someone's story until you genuinely ask.
Dim Wit she does sound like hard work. I don’t think I would want a gf whose initial reaction is to get upset, rather than be grateful he called and is alive.
In all the videos I watched from Infographics, this is the challenge that really struck me and has made me realize a bunch of things. Congratulations, great content :)

Rip, in Australia you can collect cans and bottles and put it in the ‘return and earn’ machine, then it gives you 10c. You can even put multiple items at once, and it gives you a freaking receipt too!
I just got done with something close to that. Housing a few homeless while only having a camper myself as a home (not sure if that's a step up or down from the shed) End of challenge. There good. My pets are homeless and im close to it. I no longer feel safe there and don't have money for the bills. I won't give up my babies.
@@moonondp4173 it depends on where you are. healthier food is extremely cheaper in other countries compared to the US. where as in the US youre most likely only gonna be able to afford fast food and junk food.
I'm from new Zealand and can totally relate to being homeless. I was homeless and on the streets for about two and a half maybe 3 years, I wasn't so much panhandling because I was always on the move travelling up and down country. Some towns I stopped on to see if there was any work even just a small job that needed to be done and sure enough I got plenty of those. Some people were even generous enough to take me in a few days while the job was underway, I have countless tales of the general public helping those who look like they need it... so long as you don't look intimidating and pose no immediate threat but I also found that the way you make yourself appear in the eyes of them will also get you along way, I've had random people from all walks of life take me in and give a helping hand. Very accurately portrayed 👏👏👏
Actually you should give them information to resources if you're looking to help. You don't know what their diet needs are so giving them food could be a waste and giving money can be dangerous.
ive been homeless and this is the most accurate account of an average day that ive ever seen, right down to the rules and heirarchy, and looks you get from people. i experienced true compassion all the way to outright disgust from folks that didnt know me. i had to chuckle a few times because i had really been there done that. thank you so much
willing to give them food or clothing but not money. when offered to go with them and pay for their meal, most will turn you down. that says a lot right there. so you're right to be mistrusting
alex trebek exactly. I’ve watched too many docs about homeless panhandling until they have just enough to get their drug of choice, I know that’s definitely not the case for all homeless, and I’d love to help people who are legitimate and need the money for food and water, but sadly I just don’t anymore
alex trebek, true, when I went to France, me and my fam were at a train station, there was s girl with nice clothes on asking for money, we offered her a sandwich and she declined. 😒
Shmueli Think about what you just said. You can’t trust who’s homeless and who’s not, so that’s why you don’t help? Regardless, it’s the thought that counts. Theres lots of fake homeless, especially in So Cal, but even Jesus posed as a homeless man.
When I was homeless, I accepted any help that I could get. A cheeseburger at McDonalds off the dollar menu, an extra shirt someone had laying around, a ride to pick up or drop off an application, etc. If I absolutely had to ask someone for money, I let them know why I needed the money. I hated asking people for money though but I do realize there are homeless people out there that do. I don't judge them though. They're just trying to survive. Not all of them are asking for money for drugs (I won't deny that some are though). I guess my suggestion would be to ask them what they need the money for. If they don't want to tell you, then tell them that you can't help them. If they tell you what they need it for, offer to buy it for them. If they still refuse, then that's on them. Walk away. You can't help someone unwilling to accept help.
I remember their was a homeless guy asking for money for food and I told him I won’t give you money but I’ll buy you food he decline and left... another time I was with a my sister and her friend and a homeless guy was waiting for me to get off the car he said I didn’t want to approach the females so I waited for you he straight told me I just looking for $2 dollars to go to the dollar theater to watch a movie and I believe him around the corner their was a dollar theater I gave him $10 and told him to buy himself popcorn and a soda and enjoy his movie their was so much happiness on his face I just smile, after I gave him the money he went straight to the theater
those theaters are a good place to sleep for a while, some are ever 24 hours so for a few bucks you can sleep safe and stay warm, I speak from experience HAHAHA
All I can say is thank you for doing this video. I've been homeless since 18 and I'm 20 now. This video will help inform people that not all the homeless population is bad were just trying to survive till the next day. I won't lie I've done something most would consider immoral, but I have to eat and sleep don't i? One thing you brought up is homeless stick together and that because we know the only people who %100 care about us is others like us. Please continue to inform people about stuff and possibly more about this issue.
as someone who has gone from being fairly well off to literally homeless and completely broke its nice to see people take the time to think about stuff like this and even try it, even if it is for just 3 days. try it for a year or more and see how people treat you, its pretty sad how people wont help a starving man out with a meal or even their pocket change. *Edit: Also you should try this in Chicago in the winter, makes this look like a cake walk. also most people wont give you money because they assume your going to spend it on drugs so when you do get lucky enough that someone helps you out it’s usually just a sandwich or bottle of water (which is insanely helpful, but would be nice to collect enough money to get a motel for a night every once and awhile) A nice tip for the homeless: its hard to keep a phone paid when most employers wont give homeless people jobs, but if you have a disconnected phone you can use mcdonalds free wifi ;) luckily for me Im no longer homeless thanks to a friend who is letting me stay with him rent free, once step at a time, hopefully i can find a job and start working again soon.
@@michaelbayer7466 I don't know about jail but from what I heard its worst least I can eat what I want verses being locked up and served whatever they give me.
When I was very young my mom bought a homeless man who was “begging for money and claimed he was hungry” food. He got angry and rejected it. He really wanted money for drugs. I was really upset for years because I know that other people who were homeless and starving would’ve liked a hot meal.
Same thing happened to my dad. He tried to give a guy a meal, and he yelled at my dad, told him to go home, and go to bed already. Such a weird dude. My dad said if it wasn’t for my mom being there he would’ve whooped the guy. My dads a giver, and a really nice guy, so for him to get that irritated, it means something. Some homeless just want money for drugs. It’s sad.
That's why I use the raw potato test. Offer a raw potato, if they really need food they'll take it regaurdless. That's when you know they're really hungry and give them other food too.
@@nono-cz8ki but you know not to do that because most dangerous animals are considered dangerous for a reason, while I were to see a bunny, or a squirrel they would more than likely not attack if I don't mess with them.
Animals are much more practical. Once you learn the rules and things like territorial boundaries you can you can more or less coexist. Humans on the other hand are not as practical and can be much more irrational and hold grudges over relatively small things and go out of their way to harm you even when doing so is far from practical.
Looking at it from a biological aspect, humans are animals, but I don't know if you can call them wild. Some human behaviour is savage, but others are nice and generous.
My mom when she was picking up my brother from work, saw a homeless guy, and was gonna give him a huge bag of peanuts, but by the time she was actually able to, he was gone.

Regnar's KitchenWytchery it's DEFINITELY no cake walk. That's for sure. I've honestly thought at times of being homeless that jail would've been easier. Smh

As an actual homeless person you don't need to steal. In the city where the majority of the homeless are there's plenty of food and someone will feed you.
15 years ago I ran away to Winnipeg, i ended up homeless all winter (5ish months). I quickly figured out which bus shelters are heated, anywhere downtown open 24/7, wore multiple layers of clothes at all times to keep from freezing, how to quickly wash in public bathroom sink, couch hopping as often as possible was very important, getting into a shelter early enough in the day before they fill up for the night too. Most of the other homeless people I met in the shelters tried to take care of me and protect me cause of how young I was, and some had daughters around my age too..
5 months?! Thats a long time man. I've had a few of your experiences. I was only homeless for roughly a month on-and-off(couch-hopping lightened the load). To be honest, I was way too scared to sleep around other homeless people...or even interact with them at all. People have been known to get killed by them where I live. My area was warm...and has a lot of canyons. So at night, I would trek to those canyons and scout the entire area out before I could even get a wink of sleep. I trusted nature more than people on the streets. Thankfully, the canyons were easy on me for the most part.
@@awakenow7147 the first few times I had to stay in shelters I couldn't sleep at all.. I was on edge and ready to need to have to jump up and defend myself at all times. But everyone staying in there were some of the nicest, most helpful, and most generous people I have ever encountered.

I know this is 4 years later, but this video still has that same effect. It made me store all my change in the glove box for homeless people.

I've been homeless. It's no picnic, but you learn the ropes. Hook up with somebody else because to a degree, you must have a little trust. I found out where to be warm when I slept and how to make sure I got fed. Now, I do try to help others who are still in that space. I do believe in karma...
Why you believe in Karma?
Why.....why the police do that
I’m confused, you said you were homeless for 22 years and then you said that you were homeless for 3 1/2 years. Maybe I’m just dumb.

Mr. LTrenchcoat no way the donut stores reported it.
I think pride is the biggest hurdle for a homeless person. There is help from many different sources, but you have to ask for help to get help.
I haven't been homeless. But, I was paying around $700 a month in credit card debt. With rent, food, car payments, and other expenses it all adds up. I've gone to food shelf/banks, and volunteered there in the past. I've gotten WIC and welfare when I didn't work for a long period of time, too.
It's a sad reality we live in
Thank you for doing this. I was homeless on and off for about 5-6 years, nearly two years on the streets, and people really don't understand anything about it. I had no idea before about how tough it is, especially as a female. I was on the streets for 7 months of my pregnancy, horrible stuff!!!

Think about what you just said.

*Edit: Also you should try this in Chicago in the winter, makes this look like a cake walk. also most people wont give you money because they assume your going to spend it on drugs so when you do get lucky enough that someone helps you out it’s usually just a sandwich or bottle of water (which is insanely helpful, but would be nice to collect enough money to get a motel for a night every once and awhile)
A nice tip for the homeless: its hard to keep a phone paid when most employers wont give homeless people jobs, but if you have a disconnected phone you can use mcdonalds free wifi ;)
luckily for me Im no longer homeless thanks to a friend who is letting me stay with him rent free, once step at a time, hopefully i can find a job and start working again soon.

"I definitly trust wild ANIMALS more than i trust HUMANS" Just think about it for a moment
Animals act in more predictable ways generally.
Humans are unpredictable
This challenge was a real eye-opener, I work part-time at a soup kitchen volunteering but I still did not fully understand what some of these people go through.
72 hours is not enough time to be able to tell/show what the homeless go through.... I was homeless for 6 years... it's harder then people that have homes, and never been homeless will ever know
Regnar's KitchenWytchery it's DEFINITELY no cake walk. That's for sure. I've honestly thought at times of being homeless that jail would've been easier. Smh
That's nice man
I lived at a homeless shelter, 99% of them are there because they are non functioning drug addicts, dont give them money they will use it on drugs, and then look for a free meal
@@gotdisgotdatentertainment1432 as someone who was homeless for 8 years due to mental health. I agree. Most are are drugs and cand be nice people when not on drugs. Dont give them money. If you want to help buy them food.
In America you are homeless in Soviet Russia WE are homeless!
Its not wrong ya know?
@@nicolaswolf3873 It's not wrong, WE know
*In Soviet Russia homeless is you*
Its not rigth you get a place in soviet russia
We need communism
*This Challenge:* Steal food for 3 days
I finally get it. Picturing myself in their position has given me a better understanding of our homeless individuals. This makes me want to volunteer so much more.
Spent 15$ on one meal? Could have gotten three 4 for 4 meals at Wendys.
Wendy’s the best
@@joshandwesseries2615 Deez nuggets
yea man 4 for 4s are the bomb
Hey at least you're honest about stealing the food. I'm sure most of us would've done the same if we were in that same situation
As an actual homeless person you don't need to steal. In the city where the majority of the homeless are there's plenty of food and someone will feed you.
He was doing this challenge for money. He didn’t need to steal. He chose to . Trash human
@@jerijustify people will almost always feed someone in need.
This is my favorite video! I always give to the homeless whenever I can.

It’s so terrifying how easy it is to become homeless
@@awakenow7147 the first few times I had to stay in shelters I couldn't sleep at all.. I was on edge and ready to need to have to jump up and defend myself at all times. But everyone staying in there were some of the nicest, most helpful, and most generous people I have ever encountered.
@@homosexualitymydearwatson4109 lol i didn't arrange any living arrangements or have anything planned for what I was gonna do once..
Winnipeg's winters are really weak and mild
Your a woman, but named Johnny? If you don't mind my asking, how did you end up not homeless?
Let me guess, Girlfriend wasn't happy? Right?
I assume his girlfriend would be happy if he was an ordinary bank clerk with a fudging 9 to 5 white collar work.
7:44 lol hot meal, ye she is.. hehe he dead now
@@the_rover1 its a joke about how he just goes on more about his girlfriend then the content of a video. Like when you were in the 5th grade and got your first girlfriend amd want to tell all the school boys about it

"They were looking at me like I was up to something." He says after he just got done stealing
Being homeless was a crazy experience for me. Luckily I was able to make money by selling drugs, so that kept me afloat. After a while I was able to save enough money to get a room, got a job & saved all the money I made selling drugs. Now I have my own apartment, own car, stopped selling drugs & got a better job. Homelessness is no joke. It’s serious business. Prayers to all those going through it. Specially with families 🙏🏽
Wtf
There's way more than half a million homeless in the US
Scotty Haines you got a source?
Common sense
Not really proof but alright
@@coleg5578 actually it can be seen in the US Department of Housing and Urban Development's Annual Homeless Assessment Report for 2019 or i think 2018
@@coleg5578 when I was homeless there was easily about 2k homeless people in a city of 30,000. Also most homeless people, especially the ones that have been homeless for years make sure they aren't traceable. You can't find any record of where they've been or anything. Those guys you'll never be able to count.
Just watching this was a humbling and insightful experience , I'm glad you guys did this
Cheers to the team behind The Infographics Show. You guys teach, inspire and show us the realities of the world. Amazing!
