    If you're considering bamboo for your landscape, it's vital that you take some time to study proper installation and containment techniques (e.g., what to use for a rhizome barrier, how often to prune the rhizomes, how to create a hedge, etc.). Everything I learned in this video came from Bamboo Garden. Don't fear bamboo! Embrace it. Learn how to control it and you too can enjoy the beauty and mystique of a bamboo grove.

    Thanks for the info! I live in Southern New Jersey where I have a ton of bamboo trees. However, I had to chop them down because they’re growing into my neighbor’s yard. But because of this video, I’m going to build a barrier and grow them again because not only are they gorgeous to look at, they also provide maximum privacy and work as a great sound barrier.

    My neighbors planted bamboo 16 years ago and it has only grown straight up, about 25’. They have cut the top twice but that’s all the maintenance it has ever needed and it provides a nice dense privacy screen.
    Yay bamboo!!!

    Thanks this is great! We dont have any running bamboo, as we are in the tropics and it goes nut here.
    I think for your colder climate, your running bamboo wouldnt have gone too nuts - I think its the heat and humidity that fuels it.
    My clumping bamboo is going strong and I learned how to prune it back from your wonderful video.
    Thanks again

    Mix in a LOT of old oak leaves or any leaf you have when planting and that will be like liquid gold for them. The roots will shoot through it and promote Mychorizal fungus and strong roots. I put a half a trash can full of leaves in every hole per plant.

    WRONG. I did it because I like doing tutorials. I've been to the Bamboo Gardens exactly two times. Once to look at the different bamboos (then home to take some time to think about it) then a second time to buy my bamboo. I did plug them because they were awesome. Zero pressure and extremely knowledgeable and good prices and healthy plants. Can't beat that. ;)

      ***** I actually replaced the running bamboo with some clumping bamboo. It was doing REALLY good. It never escaped, but I never actually had real peace of mind about the project. I had it contained as well as anyone could I suppose. But people like Gary Diamond (below) always kept my mind working and eventually I dug out the rhizomes and took them back to where I bought them and he traded me the rhizomes for some healthy new clumpers - Robusta and Scabrida. I'll post a video of them soon. Those two varieties still get quite tall (around 15 feet) and very dense -- even more dense than the Spectabilis.

    • @myboringchannel
      @myboringchannel  8 років тому +8

      It was a lot of maintenance. I was constantly in a state of worry about it. I kept telling myself all was well, but I had visions of it getting out and me having to pay $$$$ for someone to eradicate it from my yard. I also though that it might be difficult to resell the house if someone else didn't like it.
      The clumping varieties I bought were Robusta Fargesia (check out this link - www.bamboogarden.com/Fargesia%20robusta%20Green%20Screen.htm) and Fargesia Scabrida (www.bamboogarden.com/Fargesia%20sp.%20'Scabrida'.html). Great varieties. Can't wait to see how much they grow this year. I've had them for about 6 months now

    We planted black bamboo with this method, sinking a double-thick layer of extra-thick rhizome barrier in a full circle, metal clamps on the overlapped edges, etc. 2 years later, the little buggers escaped underneath the 30" deep barrier and ran wild. It's cost $4k so far to get it fully dug out, and it was only part-way mature. The rhizomes that pop up over the top are easy... but they can and will go deeper than the traditional 17-20" listed by the pros.

    • @myboringchannel
      @myboringchannel  10 років тому +1

      That is actually not the recommended method because you did not leave a side open for root trimming. The bamboo will try to run deeper if it if it is completely boxed in. Bamboo naturally likes to stay near the surface so will try to run along the surface first.

    Thank you for your reply. Perhaps You may be able to answer a question for which I haven’t had a good answer. I want to plant bamboo in my property in upstate NY by Lake Champlain -I want to know what kind of bamboo is allowed to grow in the state. Then, I’m interested in a bamboo that I can harvest and use it in personal, small, no-comercial projects. Given the nature of my property, non-contained bamboo is not a mayor issue, although I don’t want it to take over. So, what kind of bamboo would you recommend according to the above info. Is clumping bamboo an option to get stalks long enough to use on a variety of projects? Thanks

    No matter how deep you dig the root will eventually spread every were as far as 20 to 40 feet. If you want to protect it from spreading every where, make concrete gutter first it will definitely stop the root from spreading.

      until the concrete cracks anyway... which it will eventually. and then he is FUCKED.

    I'm just wondering how the containment and growth turned out. I lost some trees in a tornado a couple of years ago that left my yard incredibly 'unprivate.' I think a bamboo fence would be perfect, but I sure don't want it to overtake my yard. I'd love to hear how it worked out!

      It won't grow where you mow. I contained mine with my mower. People talk about it like its a wild animal. Lol

    • @myboringchannel
      @myboringchannel  8 років тому +2

      +bobby harvill people talk about it like it's a wild animal because once you let it go for a while, it's like one. With proper containment and regular care, however, it's pretty easy to maintain and control. Personally, I wouldn't rely on a mower to contain a large, healthy hedge of running bamboo. I'd use a proper root barrier or put it on a mound where it can be root trimmed.

      +Marcy Allen Hi there Marcy. I actually removed the running bamboo and have replaced it with clumping bamboo - Scabrida and Robusta, both of which can (supposedly) handle full sun. Check out my most recent video on it herre - ua-cam.com/video/vwmVMpX_QyQ/v-deo.html

    Hi I live in clovis california in the city and would like to know what type of bamboo and if this plant is good and low maintance to block my 2 story house neighboors or should I look into aluhja pine trees? I just need wherever I plant to be about 15-20 ft tall and about 10-15ft wide. Thank u

  • @Chimonger1
    @Chimonger1 6 років тому

    consider something before planting hedges that grow that tall, in an urban setting.
    There are now laws against "blocking your neighbor's solar access". So, if your years-to-mature, 30' tall bamboo hedge, starts blocking the neighbor's access to sun, they could legally require you to crop-it down to a much lower height...like the usual 6' fence height.

    That's too bad. It would be nice to see some long term follow-ups with the running bamboo. I need to plant 250ft of privacy landscaping in my backyard as well but not sure how well I can contain it. I live in North Dallas. Feel free to offer any advice.

    Would not be able to do that legally in the UK as the neighbours can claim right to light and the bamboo would be required to be moved

      Gary Diamond Its so true what they say. First year sleep, second year creep, third year leap. I bought ten 1 gal Phyllostachys bissetii plants 3 years ago. I DID NOT contain the area, it was a few hundred feet from my house on close to 10 acres. So didn't really want to do the work or the expense of trenching it with rhizome barrier. Didn't do much year 1, a few new shoots year 2 per each plant, this year, year 3, over 50 new shoots growing as far as 10 feet from the original planting, WOW! Kind of anxious now, left as is, it will no doubt be a HUGE problem in a decade. So I trenched one side, to keep it from creeping toward the house. Even though I was about 5 feet from the nearest new shoots coming up, the bamboo "root mat" had already, in many areas, crossed my arbitrary line. Pulled it out and transplanted it back 10 feet in another area. Was only going to go about 16 inches deep, but after looking around on-line, I am going the full 28 inches deep with a 2 inch above ground barrier. Lots of work. MBC: Would like to see what your hedge is looking like. Wait till next year when the "leap" part kicks in! Thanks for sharing.
