Moving. Thanks, chaps, for that. Thorpe was a real hero in the 90s especially. I don't normally get sad at people I don't know dying, but this has really upset me. The hours and hours watching him dig England out of a hole, the joy at his great innings, the pride he gave us as fans when often there was little to be proud of. He played in an era of really great bowlers, too, I believe his runs are worth more than the bare stats because of when he played. With the way players are looked after mentally these days, he might have played more and been happier. I can't thank you enough Graham for so many great memories.

Great words. My favourite innings of all time is his century v Pakistan in Karachi, where he scored two 4s in the whole innings. Was a proper grafter’s test innings and as you said, dug is out of the hole we were in. I’ll miss him terribly

He not only had a good average in an era where he faced unbelievably talented bowlers, he often did it digging in after a collapse to help give England a more respectable score... He was constantly putting out fires!...
He's not only one of the most underrated English batsman ever but one of the most underrated batsmen full stop!...
He'd most likely have a similar batting average to Joe Root if he played in this current era, which tells you how much quality he had.

Coming from a Sri Lankan, Graham Thorpe was the batsman who ignited the fire within myself to become a fan of this beautiful game. I was a wee little kid and was only instersted in watching my evening cartoons in the tele and I despised Cricket as my dad and my elder brother would hog the TV to themselves and would not allow anyone else to change the channels. One afternoon I was going across the living room muttering to myself that here we go again, another bloody cricket match, bla bla and I just had a peak at the TV screen, dunno what made me do that, and I can vividly recall a left-handed batsman in all white, helmet and everything, playing an absolute beauty of a very compact check drive and the poetry of the motion of that stroke made me stop in my tracks. That's Graham Thorpe playing his trademark cover drive on the up with a full face of his bat. I became fascinated as I couldn't fathom that there is a beauty to this sport. I then sat beside my elder brother, asked him who is that and what not and the rest is history.
Thank you Graham Thorpe for inspiring countless kids like myself to be a part of this beautiful game. I can still recall how you took many many games away from the jaws of defeat, especially that famous series win against us in 2001 where your heroic batting exploits spoiled the party for us. But I was not mad at the defeat because you once again was the England's saviour and me and my brother being a huge fan of yours, shrugged and thought "well, at least it was Thorpy who defeated us".
May you soul rest in peace "Thorpy". You will be missed but never be forgotten!

I played against Graham Thorpe in 1987 when we were both 18. Graham was playing for England Schools U/19 and I was playing for Welsh Schools U/19. I can proudly say that I bowled to Graham Thorpe. I didn’t get him out, Graham scored fifty odd on a slow pitch but he of course looked class.

Condolences to his wife and children and family, his friends and all of his mates from Surrey and England cricket. As an Aussie I always thought of Graham as being of a similar mould to Allan Border in a character sense. Tough, gritty and combative. I have friends in the UK from my time playing cricket that were friends and former teammates of Graham and they are understandably affected by his passing and my wishes are with all of them. I know from personal experience how difficult it is to perform at your best with internal struggles going on but it’s a credit to him that he was able to achieve everything that he did and at the very highest level.
    RIP Thorpey

Great comment. First time I saw him play in 1994 against Allan Donald, Pringle, McMillan and De Villiers, he looked totally at home. It was his centuries in Lahore and Colombo in 2000/1 that really hammered home how good he was. However dire the situation seemed to be for the England cricket team, I was always confident Thorpey would get us out of it. ❤
