I love using egg sinkers to keep my bait on the bottom.
Since you can slide your line through the middle of the sinker, your bait can have some freedom on the bottom to look natural.
But this advantage that egg sinkers have can also be a disadvantage.
See, most egg sinkers at your local tackle shops are made locally and might not be of the best quality.
And if you choose a bad egg sinker, it could cut your line and cause you to lose a big fish.
So in this video, you'll learn how to choose the best egg sinkers and which ones to avoid.
And if you find out you have a faulty egg sinker at home already, I'll show you how to fix it so you don't risk losing big fish because of it.
Have any questions about choosing good egg sinkers?
Have you lost a fish due to a sharp egg sinker?

I have a reamer to clean my egg sinkers and I would use a bead. I think that's bad advice. If the fish isn't bothered by the sinker it's not going to be bothered by a bead imo.
If your using a sinker that big, then the hook it self is most likely a big hook, use the point of the hook to round the hole out, I've done it for years an never had any problems. Use a bead also , it helps keep it from hanging up on the swivel eye.
I simply grab my pocket knife, ream out the hole, inspect it and call it a day. (Lead is like butter compared to blade steel, so it won’t damage the tip of your knife).
I like to lick the residue off my hands after I handle the sinkers.
Great point! Always used a bead under those sharp sinkers. Didn't think about filling them, or picking a rounded sinker. 💯/💯
Yes, great tip. I have a small thin wired cleaner that I run through my weights and bore the openings as well.
That’s why I prefer to cast my own egg sinkers that and since COVID-19 they don’t have any at local Walmart.
Nice tip! I took a pair of nail clippers and put a chamfer on the ends, did not have a video on it, just looked at them and realized they were all rough.
Ordered some off ebay that were terrible looking just like that. Danm things had wings😅😅 I took a 1/4" counter sink drill bit for wood and drilled them out on each end. It made a nice smooth divit in each end and smoothed out inside actually worked really well.
This is why I use sliders. Easier on the line and quick to change/add/subtract weight
A small bore file works wonders on deburring sinkers small and easy to carry in your tackle box/bag
I have used sand paper to sand it down so it wouldn't be any obstruction and they work just fine afterwards. Just a little advice for anyone who might find it helpful.
That's a great tip! Never even thought of this! I'm inspecting my sinkers today
And how many rigs did u loose up until now???
Thank you for telling us Tony you are a life saver
Yes!!! My line was snapping all the time and I looked at my sinker and it had sharp edges .good vid bud !!!!!
Great Videos. I had forgot about this
Sandpaper and tiny drill bits do a great nob
welders tip cleaner are perfect and cheap
Hell yeah I used them today and it was the worst in my line luckily it only costed me $1.07 at Walmart but they are awesome
I use my pin knife to reem out the openings, never had a problem
That's good advice but the same applies to ball and barrel sinkers, if you buy cheap sinkers make sure you clean the hole out. I go with the bead as well, belt and braces never hurts.
I use the pointy tip of my Salt strong scissors to ream out the edges before I tie them on...
Just got a do it egg sinker mold for Christmas. Cost of the mold was $40. No more buying sinkers me as I have a couple tons of lead laying around.
Well i do it also
Drill out hole or rat tail file does the job
Drilling out egg sinkers usually doesn't end well for your drill bit. Lead though very soft, tends to grab and break small bits.
Where are you finding a small enough file to fix the inside of an egg snake men of the coast 10 days in the last month and a half put the yak in have not caught the first keeper so I guess I'm just going to have to go fishing with you tell me where to go and what time to be there LOL have a good day Tony
Needle file, can be found at local hardware stores, or Lowes, and Home Depot
always hone your sinkers~~. always
knowing how soft lead is. . and after years and years of fishing, I've never had a slide sinker cut fishing line. i really don't think the lead is "sharp" enough to do that, it just bends out of the way. I've seen fishing line over time wear a groove in the lead weight, so I think the line is more abrasive than the lead is.
Thanks for sharing!
Is there a tool you can file down the center hole on a egg sinker
Maybe a Dremel and some kind of attachment?
Just use the appropriate diameter drill bit. With the lead being so soft you can do it by hand and not even need the actual drill.
An 80ga bicycle spoke cut down and chucked in an electric drill.
@@rwit1229 ... My very first thought. Is this that perplexing for some anglers?
.
you can use the cheap ones lol you just have to clean the up its fast and easy no file use a smooth brass tube with a tapered end its led super soft
Lead is very soft. I take a wire clothes hanger and cut off the straight part. Then I bend it an inch from the end making an "L" shape. Insert it with some force and start spinning it around. Then reverse it and repeat. It smooths out the inside and edges of the holes. For smaller sinkers just find a smaller type wire.
Thanks for the tip!
Talk about stating the bleeding obvious.
Lead's soft, trim the odd bits off.
That's why we use metal leaders LOL offshore with 6 to 7 oz weights
why I carry a pin drill and bit(s).
Should have shown those kick ass weights...
Counter sink the holes to make a little bevel
Thanks for sharing the tip!
Them there sinkers are good at addin weight to walleye!
Yikes!
Easy fix with a NAIL. just insert the nail and smooth out the bore. Takes only a second.
Pour your own. No one to blame but yourself.
anyone who couldn't figure this out for themselves...?
... I'm with you as I read these replies in amazement and I'm not that smart. ;-)
.
why use an egg sinker? use a sliding clip, easier to change out, and its designed to not chafe your line...no they don't get hung up more often when drifting
BBQ bamboo stick is all u need..
Make your own SINKERS! You will save a lot of money in the long run because lead is the most expensive product at all tackle shops.
Lead is so soft it won't hurt your line...trust me...this isn't something you need to worry about...it won't hurt your line.
Way too long. How about using some time to show how to add them to a rig?
