42yrs ago ,listened to commentary in neighbour's house while playing rubberball cricket in his courtyard.. Mother used to call us for lunch which we reluctantly complied for fear of beating but only on completion of day's play. This was my total relaxation, happiness period for the day before immersing in studies from evening onward. We had no TV, a non-functional radio ( too poor to afford a new one). But those times are etched in my memory for the simple joys in uncomplicated times. Thanks for sharing this video for bringing back the memories.
I was 15 years old. I too followed the series but not ball by ball because my matriculation examinations were there in February 1978. The three tests that India lost were close matches that could have gone India's way. India winning two tests was a big deal those days.
Felt nostalgic watching these videos of the 1978 series. I grew up listening to commentary of these matches on the radio as there was no TV transmission where we were staying. It was vacation time for our schools and we would remain glued to our radio sets throughout the entire days commentary. Those days, test matches would have a day of rest after the 2nd or the 3rd day. This was a series in which all the 5 tests produced results; amazing when compared to the number of tests that end up in draws these days!! If my memory serves me right then I can say that the couple of tests that India won to square the series were by an innings!! The last test was again won by Australia! It is amazing to see these matches in color. Jeff Thomson can be seen in action at his peak!! Same about our spinners and our legendary batsmen. Ashok Mankad can be seen in action too!! Thank you very much for bringing back these wonderful memories.
Bedi, Prassana, Chandrashekhar were all great spinners. India owe most of their victories in 1960s and 70s to them. They bowled in tandem and complemented each other. That was a golden era of Indian spinners.
Absolutely wonderful to see these legend bowling together. Thanks sir, you made me feel like 10 years old again. Memories back vividly of my dear ones who were then in 1978 with me. This is just not only highlight of match but much more than that. Thanks Sir, once again.
Awesome delivery of ghavri..and a falling Australian batsman used to practice with fearsome bowling of jef thomson. Those days when I can't afford a pocket radio set.
Sir .... Thanx for.the video and have fond memories of listening to AIR .... surprised to see Ghavri needing to bowl spin in spite of Bedi, Chandra and Pras in side ...
Remember listening to the running commentary of this entire test series on All India Radio. I'm from Pakistan but the love of the game made me wake up early morning and hook up to radio and hear the voices of Dr.Narutam Puri in English and Murali Manoher in Hindi.
I think India could have won more tests if they played all the 4 spinners. The reason why we needed to play 4 spinners was that our seam bowling was among the weakest of all test nations until the debut of Kapil dev. I would say that west indies, england, Pakistan and Australia all had better fast and medium pacers than India had. It's possible that even new Zealand, which was one of the weaker test nations, had a better fast bowling lineup than India, because Richard hadlee made his debut for new Zealand in the early 1970,s, whereas Kapil dev only made his debut in 1978. I'm not sure if he played in this series.
Yes! I remember this!! We were all watching highlights of this match at Matunga Gymkhan after finishing our daily morning practice! Bob Simpson set an unusual field for Dilip(Vengy) &V'kar got out caught immediately! Well, that's Bobby, the wily guy! ❤️
Jai Avare, absolutely love these amazing videos from that amazing series. As others have mentioned I have vivid memories of listening to these series on AIR on those chilly Delhi winter days and just trying to imagine the action on the field. Thanks to your videos I am able to connect back to those days and remember the excitement in Commentators voice when our beloved, Chandra, Prasanna , Bedi or Ghavri took a wicket. Or when our batting heroes reached a 50 or 100. Love your commentaries in each of videos as well. Sincerely request you to upload, if you can, footage from the 1983 world cup final. The only footage we have on youtube is some 40 minute long highlights. Try as hard as I can, I unable to find any other footage from that amazing match.

This was first summer of cricket I tuned into cricket regularly on the tv. Although never watched any of this as my introduction to cricket was the World Series Cricket on channel nine that summer with the West Indies, Australia and World XI teams played SuperTests and One Day Internationals all summer long. Remember David Hookes getting a broken jaw off Andy Roberts. When he recovered later in summer to play again he was wearing a helmet and that basically was the start of helmets in cricket. Did not see any of this series that must have been on channel 2 involving India and this other Australian team. Interesting to take a look at it now decades later.

Jai 4th day's play was gripping. Cosier batted well. A remarkable innings by an injured Toohey. Prasanna was the pick of the Indian bowlers on the 4th day. Great video!
Was waiting for this one! Still watching it. Two things to mention. First is a Ghavari bouncer(!). Ghavari must be slowest pace(!) bowler in world, ever. Kim Hughes shaped for a hook shot, and actually FELL DOWN. Yes, not kidding. This is not because of pace, but lack of it. He shaped for a hook but the damn ball never arrived. He waited, waited, waited and eventually fell down. Second is World's best soccer player ever to play Cricket. Of course, Bobby Simpson.
Simpson was in his 40's, as he was recalled because of Packer series going on at the same time. The only player from this team who would have survived to make the full team was Thommo. Even then India lost 3-2.
Notwithstanding the mess he made of that bouncer, Hughes was a very attractive batsman , whose good footwork allowed him to play spinners on his terms.
