    Just to clarify some things that came up.
    Just in case some people haven't seen Kengan Ashura or read the Manga and don't necessarily know the context for things.
    Kanoh's lack of leg-locking while mounted, and lack of good ground control wasn't a lack of understanding on the author's part. It's to show that Kanoh, while being a fighter with serious skills and incredible conditioning, is not actually experienced in this kind of combat, and is figuring it out as he goes. Closest comparison is to Yujiro Hanma, except Kanoh's observably learning and developing in fights as he goes, instead of just having those abilities credited to him so he looks strong.
    It actually in canon makes people quit the Kengan matches, because the idea he's learnt, mastered and countered their best techniques in the space of seconds psychs them out.
    Similar to this, is why he's okay with being mounted and beat on for portions of this, while just watching. The dude's incredibly physically and mentally conditioned. He can take punches far heavier then Okubo can give, and stay up. Even the fake shot to the pretty hard overhand, which physically tilts him, just surprises him. Doesn't even come close to knocking him out, he's just shocked that it happened.
    Okubo, being an experienced MMA fighter, knows to look at his opponents' previous fights.
    He picks out that Kanoh's almost always fought on his feet, so he puts it into his advantage by going to wrestling and groundwork to tie him up and give himself advantage.
    Unfortunately, Okubo doesn't know about Kanoh's observational abilities, or Kanoh knows enough to avoid being put into an impossible situation and to avoid losing control.
    Kanoh is able to stay in, gets enough time to study Okubo's strategy and techniques, attempts to end the fight, fails, reads the pattern, provides a fake opening that he knows Okubo will take, counters with the right while Okubo shoots, then throws him to take mount, but Okubo's already out.
    The scary face is due to some form of Dissociative Identity Disorder that he picked up to cope with some of the worse things he's done. Because despite being almost entirely alienated from modern society, almost never socialized and looking like the God of all Edgelords, he's quite a nice person. Hence the transition from being quite reserved and tactical, into being very aggressive and controlling.
    It also allows him to use his "Formless" style of striking (think like what Systema was supposed to be, mixed with drunken boxing), which makes it harder to read what he's doing, harder to react to and block blows, and lets him provide a false opening to Okubo without it being a clear trap.
    Amusingly, there is some suggestion that his D.I.D makes him even more difficult to knock out. He has a couple situations where he takes pretty bad blows and his other half comes out, slightly confused. Considering it's an anime, he's either been psyched out to the point of switching up, or he's a two-stage boss and you need to beat both halves.

    On the Agito full mount defence, Agito is a forward thinker with his Martial Art style (his grin is when he switches to Formless style) and based on what Okubo has done with his MMA fighting style and set so far. Agito used a swaying double-arm boxing technique to think about his next move. Letting Okubo lean forward more while putting more strength in the punches, allowed Agito to hip-pop Okubo off of him, knowing that any other move or counter would put him back to square one.

    I do kinda like how Kengan Ashura is what most of us imagined MMA would be originally. Masters of specific martial arts fighting it out together. Unfortunately it too often showed the flaw in most of them. There is no such thing as "Minimum effort, maximum damage" in straight up fighting. Maybe if we had reflexes that were twice what we have now we could see snazzy fighting and reactionary blocks and dodges. Then again Kengan Ashura also does bring this to light as well, with the best fighters generally capable of mixing martial arts to fit their needs. Kanoh is one of them. Ohkubo is a beast as well and easily one of my favorites.
    I do hope Kengan Omega gets an anime adaption with a high level of quality as well. Would be fun to see the realistic and "unrealistic" battle styles shown. Kanoh has an amazing fight here as well. There's also Sambo which I do not know much about, but what we see in the Manga it looks really efficient.

      thomas "hitman" hearns used that style (Perhaps even invented it, not sure myself). It's definetly a good boxing stance however it requires you to be a very skillful boxer in terms of dodging/blocking. I think Floyd Mayweather also uses it to some extension and he is known for his ways of dodging(blocking punches. Alot of your mid section/head will be open for blows but in terms of offense, you can throw punches with your "jabbing" hand from alot more obscure angles, not to mention the famous flicker jab.

    Some fights people like bringing up in anime is Psycho Pass, specifically Makishima vs Kougami. Apparently the style of reference is Silat. The other seasons have other hand to hand fights, but they don't get brought up as often. It happens often, enough though, and there are movies, which obviously have even more budget for high gloss fights.
    Cowboy Bebop and its movie "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" has a few high quality fights. The main protagonist, Spike Spiegel practices Jeet Kun Do, apparently. I'm not sure what the main villain of the movie uses, besides pure anime wat-cha-hai-ya.
    There's also Real Drive, which had a few hand to hand sequences, but I can't find good clips of it anymore, plus the high budget fights involve androids, so it's hard to tell if it's feasibly realistic.
    (The UA-cam account Ramsey Dewey did a reenactment of the Kengan Ashura fight. It's pretty hilarious to see done with real people, honestly. They also discussed better mounts, among other stuff.)

      Yes they do, the martial in the raid 2 is a close relative to kali, martial in the raid is Silat Indonesian martial art
      The first raid they did was mixed and not really Silat, it was more of krav and judo, the only thing that was Silat in the first raid was the hallway scene and the fighting the mad dog

    • @bdpchamp
      @bdpchamp 3 роки тому

      The fighting in the raid is difficult to cover and breakdown in terms of real life effectiveness simply because there are almost no mma fighters who use Silat. It’s an unproven martial art in the mma world

    • @Chris09978
      @Chris09978 3 роки тому

      @@bdpchamp thats true, they say it doesn’t work because in America they are not learning the actual Silat in Indonesia, they say it does work and it’s very effective, but they are not learning the real deal also finding a decent school is difficult to find so that’s why they consider it unproven and not effective, but someone who knows kali might be able to break it down cause it does come from the family roots like Arnis, Eskirma, and Silat

    Initially this fight was planned as Pankration vs Wrestling, old vs new (Kanoh doing pancration and Okubo wrestling) but it developed further.
    As a Muay Thai and Silat guy (and general fighting lover) I can only recommend this anime. It has some silly over the top stuff, but even that is always rooted in some actual science. If you like fighting, you'll like this anime. (2nd season is better than 1st season, both are dope.)

When you go into anime you already know stuff's gonna be exaggerated or straight up fake, but seeing how much real stuff is actually in the mix makes me appreciate the creator's efforts even more. Okubo is supposed to be a textbook MMA fighter, and the creators did an amazing job for that.

      1.) Firearms training
      2.) knife training
      3.) MMA/Jiu-Jitsu training
      1 being the best.

    My background being in wrestling, both the fight scene and your breakdown was a special delight to watch! Chad's a bloody good instructor, gotta say
    Funnily enough, we use both version of the hip toss (at least in freestyle wrestling which is what I'm most familiar with, anyhow). What you demonstrated as the judo variant runs under the name and your wrestling variant is what we (at least here in Hungary) call a lecsavarás/wrenchdown. Both got their own niche, wrenching down your opponent is often a better way to lay them out while making them achieve liftoff scores more points and leaves a bit less room for counters.
