The fear of fats and protein among vegans really scares me now. Some young vegans waiting in line at a food booth at our local market night were talking about how eating some oily food was going to hurt them that week. I think the restrictive diets are what hurt in the long run. I still like to make the occasional smoothie, but even making many smoothies after two years burned me out. At the time I was still eating other higher fat vegan foods, and I always ate the vegan mock meats.
Yeah it's rediculous. A lot of the youtube vegans, especially females, have struggled with eating disorders so my guess is their eating disorders aren't as healed as they claim.
@Jakob S thats not the issue. A lot of these high-carb vegan youtubers fear monger about oil AND fats. Having some oil here and there isn't gonna kill you.
Isn't that an interesting trend that the most health obsessed vegan youtubers are suddenly very sick and feel like they have to quit veganism? It's almost like the obsession with perfect health drives them to further and further restrictions resulting in eating healthy foods that make up a very unhealthy diet. Then suddenly there are no "healthy" or "clean" foods to cut out or add, so they feel like the only unprossesed and "pure" things they can start eating to feel better are animal products. "Clean eating" at this point is more important than ethics.
i think the real "interesting trend" that people are completely missing, is the highly likely possibility of these "youtubers" being paid heftily by certain industries to do these things, call me a crazy conspiracy theorist if you wish, but in the span of merely 1-2 weeks, i have seen many videos of "why i quit vegan after X years " and most of them are not less than 5-8 years, which makes me wonder about what was keeping them healthy for X years, and then suddenly not healthy at all, were they not doing proper blood tests during that time ? did they really eat properly ? OR were they paid to do / say that on youtube and possibly even changing their diet, as a propaganda issue ? i wonder, but i'm leaning towards the 2nd, as there are too much contradictions and inaccurate and illogical reasoning behind their reasons.
You hit the nail on the head! I have IBS and I eat a low fibre diet. I would say there’s a bit of stigma (if that’s the right word) about eating more processed vegan foods, or processed foods in general. I get why, but for myself white pasta and white rice is far better for my digestion than filling up on veggies and whole grains. Yeah sure if you’re eating only processed foods or eating processed foods and over eating then moving towards veggies is a good idea. But not for me. I weight lift too so in that community I cop shit for eating processed foods. I still measure my micro and macro nutrients and make sure I hit everything, it’s just that loading up on veggies for my extra calories is only gonna hurt me.
I hear you -- don't hurt yourself -- you are an animal too that deserves proper treatment. That is the dilemma for me. Do I hurt me (my physical and mental health) or do I eat animal products which hurts them? That is the choice I have before me. I reversed (hopefully cured) severe arthritis symptoms in both hips with animal products. It is a tough choice some of us have to make. Maybe there are people out there that can thrive on a vegan diet like Unnatural Vegan, although I know she has mentioned several health problems in the past. Veganism doesn't seem optimal for human health, at least that is what the youtube vegan community, as it ages, seems to be demonstrating.
I suffered through years of IBS in my 20's and 30's, and I just want to encourage you that it CAN get better! Treat yourself right and reduce stress any way you can, and hang in there.
@@pjjmsn Those people are the minority, it's just that negative experiences leave a bigger impression on us making it seem like everybody is quitting veganism, ignoring the other thousands of people who do fine on a vegan diet and can't relate at all.
@@werebud7446 No that is incorrect. It is a majority. 86% of vegans quit veganism within 5 years. I think we are just seeing the beginning of this type of thing on youtube.
SAME! White rice and white pasta actually is digestible in my body, I can't digest all the gluten free style pastas! But gosh the shame people can put onto you because of this :(
UN, this was one of your most professional, direct, and straight to the point response videos yet. I think it's helpful to the vegan community, in general, when you approach matters like this in this manner- with less odious language. This was very relatable and real compared to some of your previous response videos. I think it's also helpful and encouraging that you offer solutions instead of just a critique/ criticism. I feel for Bonny during this hard time in her life and it frankly sucks that she's no longer vegan, but I can imagine it's pretty scary to go through what she and Tim have been through the past couple of years. Then, to have to deal with so much online bullying on top of everything. I first went vegan in 2005 and luckily have never had a need or desire to try long-term extreme diets like raw, low fat, etc. Now I'm raising four vegan kids of my own and I think we eat a pretty balanced, varied vegan diet including fresh fruits and veg as well as lots of tofu, beans, and some vegan processed foods. Are you even living if you haven't had Gardein's Breakfast Pockets?!
Ah... I would hate to tell Bonny the truth about the fish industry but someone has to... I did competitive fishing for a number of years before going vegan. There's no nice way to put it, but when a fish is caught via a hook it fights for a reason. Its because its in pain. Fish can feel fear, I've caught enough fish to know what fear looks like. Many fish on commercial boats are unethically killed usually by asphyxiation, and half the time they're not killed properly when people attempt to do it using a knife or an iki spike. Then you have to talk about the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean from nets and lines, that plastic then goes to affect other marine life. I agree with Unnatural Vegan, farmed shellfish is more ethical than eating fish. But eating seaweed is the most ethical seafood you can eat at present.
Exactly! Not to mention how fishing tactics around the world are awful for the health of other ocean-dwelling organisms. Yes, many fishing industries in countries like the US are regulated, but does most of the consumed fish really come from these countries? And, to me, we've already done so much damage I don't think any amount of regulation is enough at this point. I really dislike the argument of "sustainable sourcing" because it's becoming a buzzword companies seem to be overusing...but what does it really mean? And, if they are truly "sustainable," is that something that you can continue to afford weekly, or even daily if you're not wealthy? There's no way I could afford to eat just regular seafood on a daily basis (and I live very close to the ocean!).
@@trevorsanders7379 Sure, but we don't need to kill the fish for food or catch it for fun. We have other food we can eat and supermarkets that we can get the food from, and their are other fun activities we can do instead. Birds don't have that luxury. Also birds don't cause nowhere near as much damage overall to aquamarine life as humans do.
I was wondering if they have tried mock meats or even considered it. It is very interesting because they were eating the whole foods plant based diet that a lot of vegans strive to achieve because it seems the "healthiest" and then they end up having the most issues. But I eat mock meats all the time and I don't restrict any vegan food and I'm doing just fine haha. But I'm also glad that I didn't stick to the whole HCLF/raw till 4 diet for too long or I'm sure I would have had issues too.
She came out on her insta and said they tried every mock meat available, I think for a like a month or something. She listed every type of "vegan" "diet" she has tried on her instagram story :)
You should prob watch Bonny’s vid and take it from the horses mouth instead of watching a reaction and only seeing snippets and u’d have ur answer love
I know I am late to seeing this but I have to say, it really frustrates me because it seems like you didn't even watch my video. I don't why you said that I only listened to naturopaths or "natural doctors", yes that comment was on my old video, I said that at that stage, but I saw many normal doctors throughout this process ,and my last doctor I went to was a REAL doctor, a gastroenterologist and specialist. He is the one that implemented this diet change. I have tried to eat a low fibre vegan diet, mock meats give a lot of digestive pain whenever I have them, and I obviously tried tofu... do you really think I haven't thought of that? It's not just fibre, like I said in my video legumes, wheat and soy all seem to provoke my symptoms. This process has been so incredibly long, you really have no idea what we went through and how hard we tried to make this work on a vegan diet. It was not a dermatologist that gave Tim antibiotics, it was a specialist and he did have a topical cream as well. Seriously oysters are your best solution? Because that is practical, calorie sufficient and palatable? 🤦♀️ I may have started on a high fruit, low fat diet but that changed a long time ago, I have been eating a balanced vegan diet for a long time now. Lastly, I don't know why you think you can diagnose people through a screen, you aren't qualified nor is it your place even if you were. It terms of ethic's, I said I am okay with what I am eating because at the end of the day, I put my own health above fish, thats really all I can say about that. I am trying to only do what is necessary to heal, and I am trying to live as cruelty free as possible in the rest of my life.
Bonny Rebecca hi Bonny, just want to say I respect your decision and honesty with posting that video. I really feel for you and Tim. Its not easy to change your whole way of life and having serious health issues can be very scary. that being said, you cannot get angry with people for making response videos and trying to fill in the gaps and understand the decision you’ve made to stop being vegan. I’ve watched your video as well, and although you mention trying many different routes to the vegan diet, you don’t state specifically that you tried mock meats. People are just trying to understand. This is your journey and whatever decision you make is YOURS. however, you simply cannot be angry with people who are upset or saddened by you not being vegan anymore when you’ve built your entire brand and channel around this life style. You made a very honest and raw video and I respect the hell out of that, but you have to open to the responses and criticisms that come with it. Granted there are people who are extremely rude and harsh, however unnatural vegan’s response was very mature and understanding in my opinion. This was a big change for you and your audience. Anyway, I hope you and Tim are doing well. I send you love & I really hope you can heal yourselves with your dietary changes. ❤️
Bonny you don’t need to justify yourself to this woman she is a snob. The fact that she thinks you should give money to charity just because you eat fish is ridiculous and as you stated in your video you were in pain daily it sad that she couldn’t just be sympathetic to the fact you and Tim had four years of hell .
Please make a video responding to Wheezy Waiter who's doing a vegan challenge! He's a cool person and wants advice on vegan nutrition and he's got quite an audience who are observing how he's doing. He had a set-back and I'm sure he'd be responsive to your input! :)

That's my reason to watch her. I came across her channel a few days ago and I mostly just 'listen' to her (plus reading the comments. So refreshing to have found a decent, quiet, reasonable place on youtube). This is an incredible resource for education. And given the fact that I'm not particularly interested in nutritional knowledge, that just says so much about this channel.
@@garrulus3399 every time i seriously consider veganism, i think of all the criticism by other vegans and i just couldn't handle that type of commentary. I suppose i needn't mention it on our channel
I really want to thank you. I wanted to go vegan and I had no idea how and how to be healthy, and your videos really helped me. I’ve been vegan for a month now and it’s going great. I am living at home so my family still eats animal products but they’re definitely eating less. But I know that I would’ve gone down a wrong pseudoscience path if I didn’t find this channel. I do my own research now instead of relying on dumb things random people say. So thank you so much you’re such an inspiration.
@@renedoe574 Correction, a poorly planned non-nutritious vegan diet will cause health problems, as will eating meat products which are extremely high in cholesterol.... #factlookitup
As a pescatarian (was plant based for years) I hurt for Bonny & other “ex vegans” because of the harsh backlash from the vegan community. I myself have been considering going back to veganism, wholeheartedly this time, who knows maybe others will want to as well in time. Anyways I appreciate your honest unbiased (fact based) response on the situation. 👍🏼
Nom De Plume I own that I’m pescatarian so what do you expect me to “admit”? YOU are exactly what’s wrong with the vegan community. Nothing is compassionate about being cruel, especially to someone that said they’re going vegan wholeheartedly this time (I also clarified that I was only plant based before).
Can you please respond to Frank Tufano's claims about nutrient bioavailability problems for people on plant-based diets? A lot of people seem to think it's not realistic to get all our nutrients from plants, and I would really love to hear your take. Thanks!
Because it's unfortunately not realistic, not to say it's not possible. The issue seems to be the lack of plant based sources of fat options. Just a suggest, i'd be having two table spoons of coconut oil every meal to really up my fat intake and maybe support bio-availability.
I'm a labourer in probably the top 3 most intensive labour jobs out there. At the time, I only ate once a day on average (but consumed 2000 calories in that one meal easy). I always vibed with being vegan. So my vegan friend convinced me. But especially on the road and working long hours, I had no time to meal prep, consider dietary impact or even think about food. So I would buy food on the road and it would always be carbs, sugar and empty calories. I went from that one 2000 calorie meal to maybe 8 or 9 hundred calories. For 3 months I did this while gaining weight and becoming lathargic. I then realized that my only option was to take masses of pills and supplements and I wondered; I'm using 10x the energy a day a normal person does. If after 3 months I'm an example of the lack of bioavailability a vegan diet has, I wonder what years of veganism can do to a normal person? I'm sorry but for me, my body told me what I was doing was wrong. I received a lot of the benefits of veganism but overall I deteriorated.
@@BerensteinGBear I hear you and sympathize with you. However, you just said "i didn't have time to meal prep". And, while I don't agree that veganism deteriorates your body ( a well balanced and planned vegan diet is actually really great), I do agree that it definitely takes much planning. Much more than an omnivorous diet. Also, I would think that it would be hard to fit it all in just one meal. So, yes... as much as it bothers a lot of vegans that I say that, I think that if you don't have much knowledge about nutrition especially vegan nutrition, and you really don't have the time and or the eagerness for planning and prepping, it's best to stick to an omnivorous diet.
@@BballkingR What about nuts, seeds, avocados and so on? Very easy to incorporate those on a daily basis. However, I do agree that there are some nutrients that are not available in plants and supplements are an absolute MUST in veganism: B12, D3 (unless you live in a all year round sunny climate) and EPA-DHA omega 3 acids. I take those every day.
Ugh. Naturopaths. I've said this before and I'll say it again: in Australia, there is a generation of naturopaths that have had two years or less "training" and are deemed qualified. There are no entry requirements into most "schools" that teach naturopathy, homeopathy or nutritional "medicine". The courses now are generally three or four years long from niche schools that have little to no academic standing and some of the texts and lectures I've seen are very sketchy. There's also a very heavy anti-vax leaning and very little science to back that stance up. Now, medical doctors are required to have a bachelors degree prior to applying for medical school, and then there is years of training before one can be deemed qualified. I don't know about others, but I think I'd rather see a real doctor with actual medical training.
I always think its a bit fishy that they diagnose so many allergies that are so mild and conveniently always include gluten and soy. Considering a coeliac would be in fits of pain and suffer from slight gluten contamination, I find it strange that their testing is so sensitive it can pick up on a supposed allergy that is so mild, Bonnie has been happily munching on vegan burgers and bread for years with digestive issues that clearly weren't bad enough to visit a doctor sooner.
@@N4T93 Yeah, I agree. What amazing tests they have. There must be a medical conspiracy if doctors don't use them too! It's so crazy. Naturopaths seem to have a handful of diagnoses they hand out again and again, based off of tests that have very little scientific basis. Leaky gut, candida, food intolerance and adrenal fatigue. I wonder if many people escape from a naturopath without one of these diagnoses.
The Natural Health Blogger Yes, and if you were injured in a car accident, I’m sure you’d trust the “expertise” of a naturopath to set your bones and stitch you back up. :)
@The Natural Health Blogger obviously you don't hold much faith in the doctors you've come across but I fail to see how bogus test results and herbs would rectify the situation any better.
A single payer health care system won't encourage that, my ensurance pays joga class and homeopathy because it selects for healthy young people (if you can't selectively price or implement maximums that's a sound strategy I appreciate).
Well she said she stayed vegan for 4 years after getting sick because she had such a close ethical connection, you might have missed that part of her vid
Does it matter what the reason for veganism is? I would think any life spared would be important. It's about the animals and environment right, but who cares WHY, because the outcome is the same.
@@lauren8627 I don't give a tit why anyone goes vegan as long as they go vegan. But no, the outcome isn't always the same. Not in my experience anyway. People who go only plant based are usually more keyed in on health than animal rights and it just doesn't touch them the way that actual vegans are touched. At the end of the day it's still about them. THEIR health.
Beyond products are amazing, I love them. Sadly, they are pricey. But I try to incorporate a lot of beans since they are good and cheap :) And occasional mock meat too :)
Meat is pretty much as expensive when not more expensive here in Switzerland (using only swiss meat of course because nobody really eats imported meats) sooo i'll have veggie meat maybe once or twice a week? I am a happy pasta and veggies eater basically all week 😂
With all this oyster talk I should try them again. I've only tried them once as a child and hated the because of the sliminess. So if I tried them again they would be solid, like fried oysters
One thing someone highlighted about this, is how the medical community lets vegans down because doctors have so little nutrition training and very low understanding of veganism. I think it's important for vegans to learn as much about veganism and nutrition as possible because they have to be their own advocate when they visit health professionals. If we don't have the tools to discuss our diet with doctors, then we are vulnerable to recommendations (eat dairy, try some red meat!) that don't match our philosophies and are unequipped to discuss alternatives. Edited for the grammars.
I love me some mock meats. I seem to phase in and out of cooking a lot of fresh veggie, whole grain, tofu etc. meals vs eating mac and cheez, beanie weenies, and sweet chili doritos for every other meal because I am apparently a very mature, ethical 8 yr old. In all seriousness I am very excited to see more excellent meat alternative brands like Quorn and Morningstar offering more and more vegan options-sans egg whites, whey etc... Also my local grocery store is more clearly labeling the mock meats which are vegan, but that may be because I live in a very vegan friendly city. Either way, its refreshing and exciting.
I personally dont think I could be vegan without my "Facon" or Sprouts Veggie burgers😬 oh and my premade bagged French fries. They satisfy that craving for a very satiating meal without actually eating the animal. I understand why people may not want to eat processed food...but its kept me vegan when so many have not when eating a healthier but less satisfying diet.💞
Omg are we twins?! I don’t like facon, but I just replace that w soyrizo and Hilary’s lentil sausage, but I feel the same way about the sprouts veggie burgers and fries...I like the alexia brand jalapeño sweet potato fries 😋
So, this is directed toward people in the comments of videos like this, not UN. I need to point out here that there are many people in this world who can't and don't thrive eating 100% plants. Even the great dietitian Jack Norris says he's had clients who simply don't do well, no matter how many tweaks are made. Granted, Bonny and Tim went about this the wrong way, and shouldn't have sought the help of Naturopaths. But I wish the vegan community would just accept that a lot of ex-vegans did genuinely try to "do veganism right" - eat a well balanced vegan diet, supplement properly, eat enough calories, etc. - and it still wasn't sustainable for them. There isn't one single diet that works for everyone, I'm sorry to say.
You are the lighthouse in the stormy sea of vegan social media. I've been vegan for almost 8 years and I did have some phases in the beginning because I allowed myself to fall prey to a couple of popular ideologies. Everyone in America, regardless of what path they choose when dieting or just in regards to what they eat, needs to be cognitive of health and nutrition. Whether you're keto or vegan or eating fast food and Cheetos most nights, you live in a country where an enormous quantity and variety of food is available. I grew up in poverty. I know it can be extremely difficult for people when it comes to accessibility and affordability. But the people you talk about on your channel don't have those problems. Supplements, nuts, beans, vegetables. I know it isn't quite that simple, but it's not much more complicated than that, either. Don't base your diet on Internet content, unless you are absurdly diligent in fact checking.
I am always confused that a country like america struggles with nutrition so much! We in europe (Switzerland here) are so used to balanced, homemade meals basically nobody eats ready meals or premade stuff because it is just so expensive 😂 You can make dinner for the entire family for the price of one ready meal... We have a completely different relationship with food than most americans do (My boyfriend spent a few month in different parts of the US and was really happy to eat fresh homemade food again). I hope there will be a shift for the sake of the future americans
I'm a bit shocked at how willing and eager those ex-vegans are at jumping into meat and eggs, before fully exploring plant options, or even as mentioned, oysters. When they do a vegan diet they want it to be super clean, work themselves into a corner and then crash out into a standard diet... I don't get it.
Basia 'Azjatycki Cukier' Włodkowska how many more years of suffering would you expect her to continue exploring the vegan options? Sounds like she exhausted so many of the vegan options up until that point!
@@blueskyandtrees I obviously don't know 100% of what she did, but Bonny Rebecca and her alike all follow the restrictive and convoluted vegan diets, that shun processed foods, oils and supplements. And those are the people that usually fall of the vegan wagon after around 5yr mark. Did she try to incorporate oils, mock meats, or even oysters into her diet before diving in for the eggs and fish? I don't think so.
@Mahtiah Hildrilae Explain how? A vegan diet containing processed foods like oils, mock-meats in moderation and appropriate supplements can be healthy, sustainable and affordable. And it's not like meats aren't a result of a highly engineered and extreme process (unless you somehow rise and butcher the animal yourself).
That’s because they view meat as natural but because mock meats are made in a factory they are bad for you. So they aren’t totally eating a standard diet because aren’t eating processed foods. Which PS not all processed foods are bad for you.
If you watched Bonnie's whole video you'd see they've been trying to fix their problems for a couple years and turned down suggestions from doctors and dietitians to try eating some non vegan foods for a very long time. Tim started eating meat because he was severely underweight and it seemed to be the only thing he could digest. (Not implausible to me, I've had IBS flares before and sometimes there's just a handful of foods that don't upset my stomach) That being said, I agree they could try oysters and mussels instead of just fish.
I used to eat vegan for about 2 years but recently incorporated oysters into my diet. I'm vegan for ethical reasons, so I would tell people I'm an ethical vegan if they asked about my diet. Oysters don't feel pain and eating oysters with my family encourages them to eat less animal products like chicken and beef because we eat dinner together. It's all about reducing suffering and harm in the end. I hope Bonny considers oysters. They have copper and zinc which are generally hard to get and be absorbed on a vegan diet if not planned carefully. They might taste weird at first, but I find them pretty delicious... Maybe some fortified cereals for zinc and other minerals that may be hard to absorbed from whole plant foods.
My sister is vegetarian and I appreciate her influence on my diet (not because I don't love Stake from "happy" sources) but because she makes me opt for alternative foods more often.
@Jakob S Hi Jakob, I am a bit confused by your statement. Are you saying the process of harvesting oysters hurts other beings (e.g. fish, seaweed) around them? If so, it's similar to how crops are harvested. The poor mice and other land animals have to suffer from us buying plant foods in supermarkets. Also in regard to what you said, could you share some reliable sources/research about this? Thanks!
What is the proof that they do no feel pain? Also, they are not classified as plants so obtaining anything from them, be it a pearl or meat is exploitation because animals are not for us to use.
@@starlightwhispers6781 Hi Starlight Whispers, great question! I admit, my statement of "Oysters do not feel pain" may be a bit presumptuous because we truly do not know. Similarly, we can say with little confidence that oysters do feel pain because of the lack of research testing their ability to feel pain. General consensus argues that they don't. If you have other research that suggest otherwise, please share. "A pearl or meat is exploitation because animals are not for us to use." - I personally am not a big believer of these tight rules. We should make choices based on the current situation. You may disagree, but I rather my family eat something that likely is insentient than eat an animal that we know IS sentient (cows, chicken, etc.). At this point in time it is impossible to change my family's mind, but they are happy to eat oysters, so why not encourage a food that is beneficial for the environment, likely doesn't feel pain, and all the while reducing other animal suffering? Please see link below on invertebrates like oysters: was-research.org/paper/invertebrate-sentience-urgent-understudied/#Why_invertebrates
With regards to bonny eating mock meats instead of fish and eggs she shared in an Instagram post recently that she has an allergy to soy and gluten. What would you suggest for a person that wants to stay vegan but has IBS as well as many food allergies?
I wish the general population would just reduce their meat/ animal product consumption as a whole, we need numbers, not a few taking it for the whole team ( the human race) which is why ex-vegans start getting hated on..

Ducatus Sancti Sabae Incorrect. 1) the vegan diet, no matter if the fruit and plants are sent halfway around the world, is in almost all cases, barring extreme diets, the best for the planet, by far, measured per calorie per tonne of CO2. This is a fact, one that you can confirm if you do about 2 minutes of research. 2) my little brother feels immense guilt for eating animals. That’s why he tries not to. Many children are the same when first told that a dead animal is on their plate, that once was alive. Even fictional characters, like Fern from Charlottes Web trying to save Wilbur, voice this same concern many children have. They accept it over time, but that does not mean they liked it at first. 3) plants also contain all 15 essential amino acids. Once again, this is a fact. 4) “animals are worthless beings” I feel bad for you. I hope you learn compassion, kindness and the power of love. It’s far more beautiful than gratifying taste buds. Goodbye.

I think the message that you are trying to convey is that EVERYBODY can sustain on vegan diet if it is conducted properly. I strongly dissagree with this - as I (and my mum) are examples of people who literally cannot SURVIVE being vegans and in our cases it was confirmed by medical doctors (real ones) and professional dietitian (with degree). PLEASE READ MY STORY: Since I was a child I had problems with anemia, when I was 3 I had such a strong anemia that I was bleeding from the corners of my mouth and nose. My parents were advised by doctors to give me livers everyday as I was too young to take syntetic iron and it helped. My iron levels were good until... I got my period. I was bleeding a lot every month (and it is like this since now) Since then my blood tests and iron levels started to get down. I was always eating meat but I had periods that I had to take syntetic iron. Afterwards, when I was 22 i started being vegan. I was vegan for a year, after that period my health has significantly declined. Of course during all this time I was taking syntetic iron and eating a lot of green vegetables and mushrooms but the problem was, as i was informed later by my dietitian, that i am in a group of people who CANNOT ABSORB syntetic iron. It also concerned my mum who at the same time, changed her diet, she was not a vegan at the time but she quit meat. After a year my body was in a very bad condition, my anemia was so strong that I was sleeping many hours in the afternoon every single day, I could not do any sports, I felt very dissy, especially when driving a car. I had a breakdown when I could not stand up to make myself a sandwich. Not to mention that my cholesterol levels were also very very low which lead me to 1) stammer when I was talking 2) losing my points when I was talking to somebody 3) thinking 3 times slower than previously 4) forgetting what I've done 2 minutes ago and deepened my depression. Trust me - this kind of life is just hell. Eventually you think of suicide because of being exhausted every single day. My dietitian told me that vegan diet and not eating meat in general is not and WILL NEVER BE POSSIBLE for me (which was very hard for me to bear at the beggining) as I am able only to ABSORB iron from meat, particullary livers. Now - after 8 months of diet based on meat and animal products I am getting better however I am still having problems with my cholesterol being too low. To make a long story short - Please realise that 1) you are not a professional dietitian despite your great knowledge and experience in being vegan. Your pieces of advice are good, however it is not possible that they could apply to every single person in a world. As you are criticising freele for giving dangerous message to people, please have a look at yourself. Aren't you being short-sighted ?2) Please realise that it is really easy for you to make video bashing someone's diet choices when you are doing well on vegan diet, you are healthy and feel happy. At the same time someone else may suffer every single day. I bet any of you guys would quit veganism if you were experiencing digestive issues everyday for let's say a year and no vegan solutions would help. AS YOU ARE ABLE TO SHOW EMPATHY TO ANIMALS, PLEASE SHOW AS MUCH EMPATHY TO HUMAN BEINGS
Leaky gut is a thing, even ncbi articles say so. It may be called “deficit in intestinal permeability”. In pathologic conditions, the permeability of the epithelial lining may be compromised allowing the passage of toxins, antigens, and bacteria in the lumen to enter the blood stream creating a “leaky gut.”
zain Yes, she bases her conclusions on the article Leaky Gut, Leaky Brain: Are They Real? (see the article link in the description). I don’t think Swayze is up to date on the microbiome research. I love her anyway, but it is sad.
Ok so as a vegan I am not bashing anyone for becoming an ex-vegan. However, I feel that there are a lot of healthy vegans who are hypochondriacs. If an actual doctor (or a series of medical doctors) cannot find anything wrong with you...chances are, it's all in your head. This goes for people who remain vegan as well. If you are 20 something, living in the developed world and doctors say nothing is wrong with you, nothing is wrong with you.
Cattoo Lady Wow, spot on. A lot of people let misinformation get to them. If someone online says “plant based will hurt you” I think some take it to heart and start looking for problems. Every ailment or whatever they start blaming on their diet immediately without critical thinking
It depends. It's not because nothing appear on an exam that you don't suffer. For example IBS is not something that you can see on an echo but you're really in pain when you have it. I have seen a few doctors that said to me "oh it's stress, it's in your head" (people around me too), it only made me worse because I was depressed. I felt a bit better when I met a gastroenterologist that told me that no, it wasn't in my head.
Cattoo Lady that’s just not true for everyone though. I got told I was okay by probably 10 drs till I saw one with specialist knowledge and ended up having 3 surgeries. We still don’t know everything about many medical issues.
This is such a naive comment. Doctors are not wizards. When i was 17 I had a kidney infection, and at first I went to my doctor for severe abdominal pain. He found nothing, gave not even a "drink more fluids, take ibuprofen", told me it was period cramps. I was in there the next day with even more pain and inability to hold down food, same thing. My family couldn't sleep at night because of the sounds the pain caused me to emit, I couldn't keep my body still. I was in again the next day, more pain, inability to keep any food or even a sip of water down. This time they tested my white blood cell count. The next day I was called out of an exam to be rushed to the hospital as my white blood cell count indicated something was SERIOUSLY wrong. Get a CT scan, a different doctor examines it and determines I have an obvious and severe kidney infection. I see my regular doctor the next day, he looks at the scan and tells me I might have cancer but probably not so don't worry about it. I'm prescribed antibiotics, told that I will be checked up on and if they aren't working we'll switch to a drip antibiotic. I never once received a follow up call, and thankfully the oral antibiotics did work (though the infection came back). They weren't even a quack doctor, they had done very well with my very ill family for over a year then. Doctors make mistakes, sometimes huge ones. Diagnosis can be elusive, but it is not uncommon to have your symptoms minimized and not taken seriously with little to no effort to find a diagnosis or treatment.
Why can't people just accept that the vegan diet doesn't work for everyone? Let go of the concept that they did it wrong or didn't try hard enough. If this diet was so sustainable and perfect then it wouldnt be so difficult to meet all of your nutritional needs and people wouldn't feel so much better once they stop and they wouldn't be developing all of these similar health issues. Thank heavens some people can tolerate it so well because we need vegans. But understand there is so much more behind it, including geographical ancestry, genetics and predispositions. Just like anything else. Would an Eskimo be vegan eating a smoothie bowl?? It's unnatural.
Appeal to nature is not a valid argument. You and me writing these comments on the internet is as unnatural as it gets. Medicine and vaccines are totally unnatural. Cars too. And all the processed and/or imported foods that we eat on a daily basis are totally against nature as well, no matter vegan or not. Does it mean we should drop all these awful unnatural things? Hell no, at least as long as we know it's not harmful to us. This "natural" argument is totally irrelevant.
@@valeriavagapova it's the most relevant argument there is for your biology because your biology doesn't know the difference. Some one from ..lets say Norwegia ..eating nothing but mangos and seeds and bananas and nuts flown in from 7 different countries isn't natural for them. Or sustainable.
@@alikarol3 Yes it isn't natural, but does it authomatically make it unhealthy? In case with your specific example it's unhealthy but not because it's "unnatural", but rather because no human, no matter the country of origin, can get all the necessary nutrients from just mangos, bananas, nuts and seeds. And again, you might as well argue that using any modern technology is unnatural and should be forbidden because it's unnatural and "your biology doesn't know the difference". Which is of course pretty irrelevant as long as said technology is useful and not harmful to humans according to the available research.
@@valeriavagapova what I'm talking about is that the reason people are getting sick and ill from their vegan diets is because it's unnatural to their biology. Yes, it is unhealthy.
Yes 😂 The saddest meal I've ever had was at the repast for my Grandma's funeral last week. The workers at the church tried to get me a vegan meal, but they accidentally bought a vegetarian one instead. So I had to eat a lunch of warm, slightly wilted bagged iceberg lettuce salad with no dressing 😂
one time my family went to a very touristy and very remote seafood restaurant, i asked them what they had without meat, and they had nothing, even their fries were cooked in meat grease 😂 they gave me a tiny tiny bowl of steamed veggies from one of those freezer bags, they were half cooked and sitting in water and bits of ice😭 may i mention we'd been driving for a long ass time and i was staaaarving so they tasted fine to me!
beans with toast, oatmeal cooked in water with soy protein powder, white toast with coconut oil and sriracha and, of course, the super cheap "dark" chocolates
Acne may be too much b12.. I had breakouts and was not sure why.. then I realized I eat fortified nutritional yeast every day ..so now I dont eat it as often or I will adjust amount if I eat it every day..and breakouts are gone...
Oh, this is interesting. Is there any info on how much B12 may be causing this? I see many sources recommend 1000 mcg supplements daily, which sounds like a lot... and does methyl- vs. cyanocobalamin matter?
The Vegan Huntsman you are welcome.. try to adjust the amount of B12 you take and hopefully it will helps... some people have breakouts if they eat cocoa...
What I've noticed with a lot of these videos where UA-camrs explain that they are no longer vegan they always say 'and I was eating a really healthy vegan diet' but never question that there lies the problem. I feel so much better on a non whole food vegan diet- I Eat mock meats, vegan 'junk food' and lazy food alongside fruits and vegetables and whole foods. It is all about balance. I still eat a far healthier diet than before I turned vegan when I didn't care at all about nutritional value.
You're suggesting she eats 'mock meat' instead of fish or eggs??? For someone who claims being a proponent of science and nutrition, this is a huge fail on your part. Mock meats are nutritionless in most cases and in all cases not even close to resembling the nutritional profile of eggs or fish. Also do you really think she hasn't considered or eaten tons of mock meats already? I believe you're better capable of analyzing her situation than this and you have a very, very hard time accepting that animal products might be a health saver in some situations and that plant foods just can't cover absolutely everything. I mean, I would say this to most vegan advocates but you actually address science so for you I take the time to formulate comments. Just disappointing how few vegans can admit that human beings are scientifically, not identical.
Tom Jones it's the opposite. Most of these 80/10/10 vegans and raw vegans don't get ENOUGH calories, so they suffer from nutrition deficits and faith issues related to that. Swayze has talked about it often in many videos.
@@KateRage888 the majority of vegans and vegetarians don't stick with it. Faunalytics regularly does studies on recidivism. Surely not everyone of these people were undereating or doing some crazy raw diet.
I just have to say that I love your videos. I'm not Vegan, but I really enjoy learning from you. You're also REALLY nice with how you talk about things (and your voice is very soothing)... Unlike some "FRE" people. Thank you for being informative and respectful in doing so. ❤️
Please can you look into the overdosing of B12 causing acne! It would explain Tim's outbreak if a doctor was prescribing too much (i.e. b12 shots). This caused me to have acne for the first time in my life, my doctor and I have since worked out a better plan to manage my b12- after a few months acne is gone.
@@dianaa8125 B12 shots don't affect my acne. I got horrific acne when going vegan. When I eat meat the acne completely disappears (and my hair grows back).
@@zain4019 I did food combining and followed a nutritionist chart with rotating foods. But I wasn't absorbing alot of it as we found out I'm sensitive to lots of gluten, soy, oxalates and histamines in nearly all vegan food. Thanks for asking I'm better now I eat meat again.
Arent the enzymes in meat that are essential especially if you have a significant issue where you're not absorbing vitamins from plant based meals? There comes a point your body is dysfunctional the solutions you present may only help in mild issues that aren't long term
@Jakob S We're all here because we want to do the right thing, it's just ridiculous to worry about being unkind to something that doesn't have a brain. You sound like those omnis saying "but plants feel pain too!!!!1!!"
hellio! i have an off-topic question. i always really enjoy your content and the way you approach veganism is something i admire. you're one of the reasons i managed to stay vegan when i was transitioning about two years ago. so thank you for that! now your video's are usually pretty lengthy, which is great since you can unpack all the small details concerning the topic you're talking about. it does keep me from sticking all the way to the end of the video quite often though, since i don't have the time (or the patience :D) to sit still in front of my computer while only focusing on your video. soooooo, i was wondering if you ever considered releasing only the audio of your longer video's as some sort of podcast. this way i would be able to listen to your video's when i'm cycling/on public transport/walking, etc. would be pretty helpful! thank you and keep up the good work :)
Some naturopaths claim they are specialists in gastrointestinal health. So I'd be inclined to ask... was the specialist a qualified doctor or a naturopath? Did they go together (which was kind of implied) to see him/her? Because medical specialists in Australia do not see two patients at once. One at a time, separate appointments. This isn't me throwing shade at them, but genuinely curious as to who they saw (as in specialty type and qualifications) and how it went down. Most specialists in Australia (exceptions: physiotherapists, dieticians, dermatologists and a few other niche ones) require a GP referral and a bunch of pre-completed pathology. Then there's the consult, sometimes more tests, recommendations for treatment, scheduled future review of treatment and additional future pathology to determine treatment effectiveness. None of this really seems to be present. Bonnie certainly made it sound like they went to the specialist once and then closed the book on that avenue. I genuinely hope their health is improving, and I don't even care that they aren't vegan, I just hate promotion of quackery as medical science.
@@angelalee7012 yeah, she went to a gastroenterologist. So did Tim. Because of everything they had to do just to get in to see the specialist, it took four months to get to go. So, yeah. She and Tim went to an actual doctor, at the end, guys. Not just naturopaths or other quacks. She's pretty clear about that in the video, and on her Insta. And let's be honest -- we don't know how long ago that was or how many appointments either of them have had or will have in the future, nor is it our business.
You should respond to Joey Graceffa's recent video. It was so disheartening to hear his current stance on health stuff especially since he has such a huge following
@@omgitsthebeatles Yes this was yesterday I think. It's way worse. Before he was pretty much just talking about his own health problems but in this video he basically said that western medicine is a conspiracy used just to make money. It was very upsetting to me and I unsubscribed.
Good response, but I have to point out that you seem to have missed the part in Bonny's video where she said they went to a real doctor before seeing the naturopath.
I have wanted to go vegan for some time..its been a slow transition for me. I haven't had most meats in almost 10 years, but still eat fish and chicken. No longer purchasing animal derived products and I make sure things are cruelty free. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with IBS last month and am on a low FODMAP diet where I've learned blueberries, eggs, walnuts, and cassava are things that trigger abdominal pain for me. I don't know if a vegan diet will be best for me given my digestive issues but hell, I've been eating animal proteins and still got digestive problems so I will be working with a dietician to give a vegan diet a try and see if my body responds well to it. love your videos!
Kelsie Kozakevich thats what this yr is all about for me. healing!!!! thank u. i really hope i can get it under control. and i know im not drinking enough water so ill defo try drinking water without meals.
Good luck with everything-hope you end up finding a solution (even if it's not vegan-just be healthy and try to avoid what animal products you can when you can!).
@Jakob S Yeah the key words here are "can" and "if done properly". In other words, not that confident. I've met people who went keto and reversed type 2 diabetes in 3 weeks. My own grandma did it in 8 weeks. My friend works at the hospital and some of the nurses with type 2 haven't reversed their diabetes after going vegan for a year. I also know a family of doctors who went vegan and now have type 2 diabetes on t he diet. One of their teenagers actually progressed to type 1 his pancreas was so ruined. Everyone can be different of course but the promises don't seem to span out for most people in practice. BTW, diabetes is carbohydrate intolerance. Much harder to do on vegan as vegan is basically carbs, the thing diabetics can't tolerate.
I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would care so much about another person's diet choices. Humans have eaten meat forever, it's not new. Of course the commercialization of the meat industry has caused a lot of suffering for animals. That is absolutely vile, BUT it does not making eating meat inherently wrong. I've seen a few of your videos and from what I've understood the main solution to health problems on a vegan diet is taking supplements. What this indicates is that it's not a diet which is meant for humans naturally. I mean, cows don't need supplements to survive on their herbivore diet. To me this just reinforces the idea that humans are omnivores.
As someone studying naturopathic nutrition and going into naturopathy, I just want to point out that in my course we are told NOT to diagnose, NOT to run unnecessary tests and actively try to keep costs down for our patients. Even if we think they do have a particular disease in the UK we cannot diagnose, treat or cure. The main role is to support and help alieve symptoms caused by a particular disease. For example, acne caused by PCOS, we would help their acne NOT cure their PCOS. We cannot legally say this. Must be different in the US but in the UK that would be practising medicine without a license.
It’s simply legally we cannot say that. Of course if someone comes to us with acne for example we would find out the root cause but legally we cannot say that we are treating their disease because we are not doctors and cannot claim to do so. We aid in relieving symptoms based on the root cause so a different protocol would be used if the acne was caused by PCOS, gut issues, zinc deficiency etc. It’s not simply suppressing symptoms it’s helping get rid of the symptoms based on the root cause :)
People will want to try treat their cancer using only natural methods but in the UK only doctors can treat cancer, not nutritionists or naturopaths. In this case to take on a patient refusing allopathic treatment we have to sign legal documents stating that we are supporting their overall health but are not treating their cancer. We must also continue to encourage them to engage in allopathic medical treatments. This is in order to legitimise the profession. You can’t have people who have studied for 3 years going around saying they’ll treat cancer and other diseases, that would be absurd.
The Natural Health Blogger with cancer I don’t think natural medicine doctors can do much, you’re right in saying that they would be much better off in the hands of conventional doctors. I think there is a place for both professions, serious illnesses like cancer can be supported by natural medicine but I don’t think it should be the first point of treatment. Some cancers can be starved with a Keto diet for example which could be used in conjunction with chemo whilst other cancers could adapt to using fat for energy so this would need to be monitored by a nutritionist. I think in Bonnys case they did the right thing seeing natural doctors, it’s a shame it took a long time for it to be sorted though. Anyway I mainly just wanted to point out that not all natural medicine doctors are quacks trying to diagnose things that don’t exist and treat things using expensive supplements. That kind of thing is heavily frowned upon in the college I study at. We are very aware of the limitations nutritional therapy has and there are also limitation to allopathic treatment which you pointed out. I think the best option for most people is to have both work together, in an ideal world anyway :)
The Natural Health Blogger that’s really interesting! Thank you for the information :) hopefully in years to come it’ll just be one of those things we look back on and can’t believe people died from it!
You’re a breath of fresh air. We were vegan for many years. When our daughter was born she had a lot of health issues. At 7 months she was rushed to the hospital experiencing anaphylaxis. It was terrifying. We’re now eating animal protein after our daughter was diagnosed with life threatening allergies to peanuts and legumes including peas. We could not see how we could manage a healthy diet without plant protein sources. Our daughter is happy and healthy. We joined a farm coop so we see the animals we eat. Our daughter can’t have exposure therapy at this point as she has had two life threatening exposures. One after a family eating hummus didn’t wipe their kids hands before allowing them on a climber and another time at a play date where other kids ate a sugary cereal and didn’t wash hands. Super scary! We’re thankful for epi pens and universal health care!
I really appreciate the idea to donate to charities as a sort of 'offset' for people who are no longer vegan. No one can be perfect, and I think doing this is better than doing nothing at all if you really believe you can't be vegan.
I really think people should have left them alone. Her boyfriend was really sick if he was weighing less than her. And she did say she change her vegan diet to a high protein, they did tried several ways to eat, raw, cooked, high carb, high fat, high protein, etc for MONTHS, which on the long run turned into years... she also said they used suplements for several months, but still her boyfriend was alarmingly underweight and in PAIN. It's shockingly surprising how vegans can empathized with animals but not with another human being. You only gave the oyster solution, which noone knows if they tried it and did not work either, so there were not many other options, but to watch her boyfriend starve because his bowls can't hold any nutrients It was weird that in the beginning of the video it seems like you were going to say that maybe in this particular case veganism was not for them, instead you just stated hat they didn't tried hard enough and proceed to say they shouldn't be martyrs so what is it then? This video was only more polite than others, but still only thinking it was about acne when someone was starving
I really like your channel...and purposely came here to hear your balanced views. That being said...don't you think it's likely that this Bonny girl tried different ways to fix her digestion before deciding to add back meat products? She stayed dedicated for 5 years, which makes me think she didn't make the switch as lightly as the outside world want to believe. All of our bodies are different and we don't all have the same reactions to food. People need to stop assuming that they have the solution for everyone else.
I completely agree with everything you said. I thought the same thing when watching her video asking why she doesn’t try mock meat. I think more vegans should be open to mock meat and things like that
Processed mock meats are better than local free range eggs? or local free range chicken? Can you expand on this? I'd love to see a comparison ie. health, environment, animal well being.
All the responses Bonny got lately made me think that being a vegan is hard. Supplements, worrying about ingredients, adjusting your diet every now and then because you feel like crap. I don't know. I was vegan for 3 years, was eating mock meats, ;legumes and grains, my greens and my starches and I ended up losing my period, having cavities, depression and bad skin. Plus I gained 7kg. Nope. I also had acne. I was taking my iron supplement and my Deva multivitamin every day.
That's why Bonny and so many social media vegans are shit examples to follow :( being vegan can def be difficult but it's a lot harder due to people like her in the vegan community tbh
@@therobin980 I got the same as Koulouropodaro. When I eat animal products my health issues disappear. I think some people can tolerate vegan diets. Other people just can't.
They're very likely not sentient (so they can't suffer or feel pain like other animals) She has a video about whether bivalves could be considered vegan.
I really appreciated you talking about this video and clearly explaining your thoughts and most of all having empathy. I saw so many reaction videos and they’re comment sections saying some pretty nasty things. One of the things I would have liked you to touch on was when she got some test results back and being worried it would trigger a autoimmune disease(?)that her father has and that she’s been getting symptoms similar to the ones he got at her age. Also you kept mentioning oysters and last time I checked which was a long time ago was that oysters are expensive but maybe it’s different where you live. I do wonder how expensive oysters are where she lives though and if they’re within her means maybe she’ll explore that.
I know there's no real, thorough science backing up an acne/diet connection, but I was still convinced my acne would clear up when I went vegan. When it didn't work, I went raw vegan. It got dramatically worse, to the point I went on Accutane. Just finished the treatment and my skin's better now, and I'm still vegan (but not raw)!
Unless and until vegans become less militant about imposing their diets on everyone, the lifestyle will never appeal to a larger audience. How the UA-cam community has reacted to this girl is reprehensible but predictable. Everyone needs to stay in their lane. You get more flies with honey.
If your not going to a fresh shucked oyster bar everyday how can you sustain yourself on oysters? If she's having sooo many problems what makes you think she can handle the high histamine from canned oysters? Canned meat is VERY high in histamine.
Functional medicine doctors are actually real MDs (med school, residency etc), but they get further training and choose to practice functional medicine. Same with integrative docs. Naturopathic doctors ND-s go to a different school which they call med school, but it is a naturopathic school, 4 years i think, in the US, it is still some medical training though... In Europe and many countries, naturopaths are not naturopathic dr-s but have some small training and practice herbalism or other natural approaches but have NO medical training.
Unnatural Vegan (don't know your name)... I find you to be very sincere, yet there is one thing that continues to dog me.. and that is: why is this diet so difficult to do correctly? I was vegetarian and eventually vegan for two years.. I gained an enormous amount of wait and developed serious digestive issues.. Eventually I eliminated grains, upped my fat intake and protein, and lowered the amount of fruit I was consuming. . But alas I never thrived as a vegan..
I really appreciate these videos. I wouldn't have stayed two seconds if you ever started bashing someone for no longer being vegan, and I really appreciate the non-judgmental, solution oriented approach. I'm not vegan. I can't, at this point, be vegan. I have a couple of mental illness, including an eating disorder, that makes any form of active attention to my diet a Bad Idea. I can't do it - I either don't plan at all and/or binge eat compulsively, or I kind of freak out and starve myself living on generally less than 400-500 kcal/day for weeks on end. I do really appreciate the nutritional information you share - and share actual proper sources for!! - they're great reading on days when stuff like that won't trigger my disordered eating. I can't actively plan my eating the way a healthy person could, but it just kind of puts the plant based foods at the forefront of my mind so that I kind of remember them more easily when I'm grocery shopping. It makes it easier for me to make it healthier, more ethical choices while still managing the balancing act that keeps me at least somewhat functional in my daily life - and the influx of fruit and vegetables that make up a larger and larger part of my diet helps make me feel and function better too, probably because I'm eating more varied and nutritious food. Idk. I'm rambling. I just wanted to thank you for how you handle those of us who for whatever reason can't do everything we want or should. It's really great, both helping me eat healthier and more ethically in the short term and giving me the resources I need to go plant based or mainly plant based in the future.
Can someone clarify what these vague “digestive issues” are? Does it just mean that you’re pooping all the time? Or is it actually something more substantial?
Comparing Mock-meats to Fish is either disingenuous or delusional. Fish comes with a perfect omega 3 : 6 ratio, preformed DHA/EPA, B12 etc. This is laughable.
The reason I'm not 100% plant-based anymore is this-I chose whole foods over fully plant-based but including a lot of processed junk (my gut always got very irritated from mock meats)
@@surlespasdondine anybody that tells you that processed mock meats are better than unprocessed animal products is deluded. I talked about this on my channel. TVP and other isolated plant proteins WRECK digestion.
Bobby's Perspective she was not comparing the two from a nutritional stand point, she just said mock meats are low on fiber, so, if fiber was the issue, it would have been an alternative to fish.
what about insects? would you consider things like crickets sentient? Im not talking about insects killed in agriculture but rather eating farmed crickets that are killed via freezing.
I would eat insects but unfortunately they taste like nothing and look disgusting. A piece of mock meat is absolutely more delicious and satisfying than insects.
You keep mentioning that oyster aren’t sentient, but I was wondering about other options such as scallops etc? I watched your oyster video but can’t seem to understand if scallops are more sentient than oysters?
Omg..did you actually say that leaky gut/ intestinal permeability is "bogus"?? Ok, I think you need to reevaluate that statement dear....There is plenty of actual science behind it.
I totally agree that high carb and low fat diet is a bad choice all in all. When I was recovering from anorexia (a rather light version of it), I fell into the same trap: I couldn't force myself to eat "normal food" because I had an aversion to anything fatty, oils etc. and instead ate like kilos of apples or peaches or whatever was available. And it fucked up my eating habits badly. Getting used to feeling satiated only on such large volumes is very dangerous, and later you would have to go back to something containing protein and fat anyway, but you are very likely to have self-control issues. At some point eventually it made me eat a peach out of a waste bin, and then I understood at what a low point I was. I don't know how grown-up people with any knowledge of digestive system can recommend this stuff.
I don't think you realize what ingredients are actually in some of the mock meats you suggest. I'll help: The Beyond Burger: pea protein isolate, expeller-pressed canola oil, refined coconut oil, water, yeast extract, maltodextrin, natural flavors, gum arabic, sunflower oil, salt, succinic acid, acetic acid, non-GMO modified food starch, cellulose from bamboo, methylcellulose, potato starch, beet juice extract (for color), ascorbic acid (to maintain color), annatto extract (for color), citrus fruit extract (to maintain quality), vegetable glycerin. The Impossible Burger: water, textured wheat protein, coconut oil, potato protein, natural flavors, 2% or less of: leghemoglobin (heme protein), yeast extract, salt, soy protein isolate, konjac gum, xanthan gum, thiamin (vitamin B1), zinc, niacin, vitamin B6, riboflavin (vitamin B2), vitamin B12. I am dealing with similar issues that Bonny is dealing with and have had reactions to these ingredients: pea protein isolate, maltodextrin, all types of 'gum' ingredients, any type of starch ingredient (including low fodmap potato starch), and wheat protein. All of those are in both the Impossible Burger and the Beyond Burger. Also, I don't feel safe eating something that lists 'natural flavors' as an ingredient as they are not required to list out the ingredients specifically. I have bad reactions to both onions and garlic, and I feel fairly confident that they are both part of the 'natural flavors.' You haven't done enough research on this. People are individual in their responses to foods, and mock meats are not a solution for people dealing with gut issues such as mine or Bonny's. These videos shouldn't be about veganism anymore, this is about gut health.
I disagree about killing the animal being some terrible thing since it's sentient. Animals eat each other. It IS possible to find an ethical source where they're not abused. You have to find a trustworthy farmer. My family in NY has just that. They have seen the farm, seen how the animals are treated, and seen that they are killed humanely. But I think a lot of people do assume places that say they're humane are, without actually checking it out. Besides, as you said, she's limiting herself on meats. That makes a difference. That's important. Vegans shaming people who take the incentive to limit meat consumption is annoying, and it makes those people not stick through it.
Any tips for college students (or anyone struggling with money) on going vegan? I’m trying to eat more plant based foods, just everything is so expensive. Going completely vegan isn’t right for my lifestyle right now, but I would love to try and incorporate a plant based diet more often. Let me know what you think :)
So I'm a boring cook and poor haha but I personally eat oatmeal or a bagel for breakfast. Lunch is usually veggie pasta and edamame, just the frozen bagged kind that's pretty cheap. Almond butter and jelly sandwiches😊Dinner is usually bean tostadas and Spanish rice. Or I get frozen veggie burgers and fries. Also cheap. I take multivitamins and I juice veggies and fruit every couple days. I snack a lot during the day too crackers or nuts and seaweed. I have the chronometer app and I usually get pretty good scores on everything😊 But anyways those are some random ideas for incorporating more plant food pretty easily. As I said I am not much of a cook😄 so its easy fast and cheap that I like.
Do you have access to a natural supermarket that has a bulk section? That ends up being the cheapest. But a shit ton of beans, meal prep them on the weekends. Freeze them if you want. Oats, rice, pasta are also good if you buy them in bulk. They have nuts in the bulk section which are pricier overall but a good source of fat and protein. TVP can be great. Peanut butter is amazing, versatile, and beginner vegan friendly. Stick to cheaper on season fruit and frozen veggies. Cheap Lazy Vegan and Modest Cooking are good channels for budget vegan recipes.
Oh and chili is one of the best weekend meal prep foods. Add whatever beans you want: black, kidney, pinto, lentils and/or TVP. If you make too much and think you won’t eat it during the week or will get bored of it you can freeze batches. You can be sneaky and purée white beans into any kinda sauce (like pesto) for pasta or pasta salads. You can make hummus for wraps or rice bowls. Edamame is good in stir fries and as a snack (I sprinkle garlic powder, chili flakes, and salt on them).
If you wanna try tofu or tempeh try them at an Asian restaurant first, then try to make it at home. They have a steep learning curve for cooking them so you might try to make them at home and think you don’t like them. Tempeh can get pricier and be harder to find but tofu is usually pretty okay. My most common ways to make it are in scrambles and shallow fried in whatever oil until crispy then sprayed with soy sauce in a mister bottle, then topped with whatever sauce or toppings. Honestly the spray bottle soy sauce trick makes it so much easier to evenly season tofu or even any veggies.
College vegan right here. Also someone living in a part of my city with literally only one (not so great) grocery store. I eat a lot of oatmeal because I like it and it's super easy to make. Also dried beans are like the cheapest thing ever. I usually meal prep on Sundays to save time during the weekends when I have class and other stuff to do. I like to look at the circular and coupons for produce since that's usually where I spend most of my money. I'm not trying to make 5 star meals here, so if I can get a vidalia onion cheaper when a recipe calls for yellow onion I don't really care. Also frozen veggies can be helpful. Repurposing basics (so using the same basic ingredients for both a salad and a grain bowl) is great because you can cook more food with less prep. Cheap lazy vegan has a lot of good recipes and also meal prep on x amount of dollars videos. If you have a meal plan but there's not a lot of plant-based options at dining halls, suggest them. Whatever company provides your dining hall food wants feedback from students. At my school they ask you to do surveys and there's also a sort of town-hall thing where student representatives from each dorm talk to the Aramark people about suggestions people in their building have. In the last year plant-based options have increased dramatically on campus.
I think Bonny Rebbeca did the right thing. You can tell how driven she was by the movement that she was doctors overseas and saw a REAL GI doctor. She also tried all of the things you mentioned and they didn't work. When Saara came out as ex vegan, everyone had no problem since she listened to her doctor about her digestive problems. I don't see why Bonny, who struggled for years on end, and tried to fix it on a plant based diet and saw tons of doctors, is not allowed to listen to them. She did the absolute right thing by listening to her doctor.
She does struggle with soy so mock meats wouldn't be her substitute source. There are also lots of nutrients in fish and eggs that you won't get from mock meats. She's doing what's best for her body.
"Fake illnesses aka digestive issues...." ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? UMMM what make you qualified to decide what illnesses are fake? Are you a doctor or medical professional?? I think not. As a person who has suffered with digestive issues for six years and tried every kind of diet change possible with no relief from digestive symptoms I can totally relate to what Bonnie said. Sometimes diet changes dont work. Sometimes people need to seek medical treatment. Who they chose to seek that treatment from is THEIR BUSINESS. Telling them their dr choices are fake too is not your business either. You didnt go to medical school. What makes it ok for you to "respond" to them when they change their diet or seek treatment and tell them they are wrong. Unless you have experienced what they have been through you have NO idea what they went through. You dont live in @BonnieRebecca or Tim's bodies and to suggest that they didnt make the right choice for them is just rude and unjustifed and none of your business. I can promise you if you lived in my body for ONE DAY you would quickly change your tune and decide that diegestive issuse are real and debilitating. There is nothing wrong with people being vegan and it if works for them then great. But if it doesnt and they make diet changes that are not vegan then there is nothing wrong with that either. The problem with these response videos is that the youtubers who made the original videos almost never ask for a response from anyone. So to say you arent here to bash Bonnie or anyone else is totally not true. When you come on here and tell the whole world that her illness is fake and her decision to no longer be vegan is a questionable choice because she didnt "do it right" that is bashing and degrading her for her choices. Calling her a liar by saying her digestive issues are fake is just wrong. I truly hope you never have these awful digestive issues but if you do be sure to come on here and tell the whole world so you can have the whole world call you a liar. Maybe then you will have more respect and appreciation for others and their feelings.
my mother keeps chickens as pets, they're like outside family and fed the best food she can find for them, like worms and nutritious weed on top of a varied diet (for a chicken). They have a lot of space, names and won't be killed once they stop laying eggs. The only thing she can't let them do is breed, because where would the chicklings go? Would you guys say that it's ethical to eat their eggs?
Yeah tell people who have actually suffered with adrenal fatigue that it's not real. Also my "real doctor" gp diagnosed my adrenal fatigue through blood test by checking hormonal and cortisol levels. Smh.
If you NEED supplements, protein powdered , fortified foods, and processed mock meats sludge to meet your nutritional requirements... maybe this diet is just NOT ideal for humans. There is no world where mock meats are healthier than a whole food with 1 ingredient.
A. Don't you find it weird that you now sound so very convinced about what you are saying? Considering how, not so long ago you ate a completely different diet and were equally as convinced that you were doing the right thing. B. Aren't oisters expensive? How is that a solution?
I think you should film a debate with a good naturopathic doctor. I would like to hear it from both points of view because it sounds unnecessarily derogatory when you dismiss someone's entire education as being fake. Conventional medicine has a ton of limitations and I think it's narrow-minded to call anyone who doesn't follow that path a quack.
Thank you for this video. It was different from all the other responses - you were respectful, so thank you. I'm a dermatology resident and I have to say you covered the whole acne problem so well. We try to avoid antibiotics (I practice in Switzerland) or prescribe them for 3 months max. I personally don't really use systemic antibiotics for acne but do prescribe topical ones. Anyways, what you said was spot on. Lastly, I realized while you were talking that this is my current problem: I started eating such a high volume of food trying this high carb vegan thing that now I can't Stopp! I eat a huge load of food to feel full... Any Tipps on how to change that? Do you have a video on it by any chance?
How is it a wrong mindset for someone who has clear health issues to want a diagnosis and treatment? That would allow personal research on the subject. Worth noting she ended up seeing 'real doctors', in fact Australia's best and they all highly suggested introducing high quality animal products, yet that's not what she wanted to hear.
Adrenal fatigue isnt complete bs. I developed a pseudo-cushings type illness years ago because of stress. I had the worst eating habits and had irregular sleeping patterns and basically wrecked my body this way. IBS, weight gain, depression and everything that goes with it. It was actually this that prompted me to look into veganism and switching to a plantbased diet actually saved my life.
@Jakob S My problem with eating meat isn't for health reasons but the ethical reasons.
@Jakob S as I understand the OP her point isn't "is oil healthy or not" but rather the obsession with it, which I agree with.
@Jakob S I never said avoiding certain foods is an obsession. I said it can be, and appears to be for a lot of vegan youtubers.
Exactly!! 👏👏👏👏
i think the real "interesting trend" that people are completely missing, is the highly likely possibility of these "youtubers" being paid heftily by certain industries to do these things, call me a crazy conspiracy theorist if you wish, but in the span of merely 1-2 weeks, i have seen many videos of "why i quit vegan after X years " and most of them are not less than 5-8 years, which makes me wonder about what was keeping them healthy for X years, and then suddenly not healthy at all, were they not doing proper blood tests during that time ? did they really eat properly ?
OR
were they paid to do / say that on youtube and possibly even changing their diet, as a propaganda issue ?
i wonder, but i'm leaning towards the 2nd, as there are too much contradictions and inaccurate and illogical reasoning behind their reasons.
It’s orthorexia, plain and simple.
Tube Watcher exactly!!
many starve themselves or eat lots and lots of junk

Love your comment. I'm raising 3 vegan kids, one of them was vegan from conception 😊
yesss!
You are CHILD ABUSERS !!!
@@AdamSmith-xc5dp Lol
The American Pediatric Society has said a vegan diet is fine for children of all ages after being weaned from breast milk!
Laura Te Aho-White bump
Nature is brutal. Killing a fish with a knife is a lot less painful than being clawed to death by bird.
Not only that, but fishing is the biggest contributor of plastic in our oceans
She listed every type of "vegan" "diet" she has tried on her instagram story
:)
I may have started on a high fruit, low fat diet but that changed a long time ago, I have been eating a balanced vegan diet for a long time now.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 you’re so right Bonnie! These response videos are ridiculous.
I support you, Bonny. And I hear every word you're saying here. I'm glad you commented. All my very best to you in your journey to health.
Well said at the end of the day she is still vegetarian so she is still doing well
Please make a video responding to Wheezy Waiter who's doing a vegan challenge! He's a cool person and wants advice on vegan nutrition and he's got quite an audience who are observing how he's doing. He had a set-back and I'm sure he'd be responsive to your input! :)

As a pescatarian (was plant based for years) I hurt for Bonny & other “ex vegans” because of the harsh backlash from the vegan community. Anyways I appreciate your honest unbiased (fact based) response on the situation. 👍🏼
FISH MURDERER
As an x-vegan you are a pussytarian. Yes, you failed. Admit it and shut up.
Pescatarian is so much better than average omnivore. You are doing your best to do your part. Do what works best for you
Nom De Plume I own that I’m pescatarian so what do you expect me to “admit”? YOU are exactly what’s wrong with the vegan community. Nothing is compassionate about being cruel, especially to someone that said they’re going vegan wholeheartedly this time (I also clarified that I was only plant based before).
@@creaturecaitlin5890 Caitlin, I wouldn't bother responding to rudeness and immaturity. People like that are not worth the time of the day.
What do you want her to tell you? Things you want to hear?
Naturopathy should be free, since it achieves nothing. It's a scam otherwise.
The Natural Health Blogger Yes, and if you were injured in a car accident, I’m sure you’d trust the “expertise” of a naturopath to set your bones and stitch you back up. :)

Yeah it was Mic the Vegan who talked about it.
That's why you see a Nutritionist. Find one who know what they are talking about.
That's why it's important to ask for a referral to a dietitian!
I completely agree with you
Omg are we twins?!
I believe everything feels pain, even oysters and even plants. I think studies have shown even single celled organisms swim away from pain.
With regards to bonny eating mock meats instead of fish and eggs she shared in an Instagram post recently that she has an allergy to soy and gluten. What would you suggest for a person that wants to stay vegan but has IBS as well as many food allergies?
Pea protein
She has a video on low FODMAP diets. Not sure if that would help!
The beyond meat is a good mock meat to have. It doesn't have soy or gluten.
yesss beyond meat pea proteins 💪
Mussels and or pea protein based mock meats. Also buckwheat. Nuts. Seeds. Oil.
I wish the general population would just reduce their meat/ animal product consumption as a whole, we need numbers, not a few taking it for the whole team ( the human race) which is why ex-vegans start getting hated on..
US general population diet is already 75% plant-based.

Incorrect.
Once again,
this is a fact.
4) “animals are worthless beings”

PLEASE ANYBODY WHO HATES/DISAGREE WITH EX-VEGANS READ THIS: With all respect to you and the content that you are providing (which is obviously based on logical arguments and a lot of research that you have done on vegan diet) I would like to ask you for more empathy for people who really cannot be vegans becasue of medical reasons/health issues.
Kyïv stuff
Did she say it wasn’t? (Just curious)
It would be sad if she did think it’s not a thing.
zain Yes, she bases her conclusions on the article Leaky Gut, Leaky Brain: Are They Real?
When your hear the whole day “If you’re ill, it has to be your diet” you believe it someday.

So I had to eat a lunch of warm, slightly wilted bagged iceberg lettuce salad with no dressing 😂

totally agree. I think we need to probe their "really healthy vegan diet" statements a bit more
You're suggesting she eats 'mock meat' instead of fish or eggs???

Bonny and Tim did see a specialist, an actual doctor. Gastro specialist, they did go.
They need to see a psychiatrist.

SkyArtisan she didn’t miss that out did she? she said that there’s an issue with people determined for a diagnosis...
Jakob S i hope so! i really miss eating all the veggies and fruits without any pain. maybe juicing them instead will b helpful. thank u!
@Jakob S Not if you have diabetes.
Her boyfriend was really sick if he was
weighing less than her.
You only gave the oyster solution, which noone knows if they tried it and did not work either, so there were not many other options, but to watch her boyfriend starve because his bowls can't hold any nutrients
It was weird that in the beginning of the video it seems like you were going to say that maybe in this particular case veganism was not for them, instead you just stated hat they didn't tried hard enough and proceed to say they shouldn't be martyrs so what is it then?
I think more vegans should be open to mock meat and things like that
lol why is she hearting all of the anti-vegan comments?!?? Did anyone else notice that wtf
I imagine to seem more chill and also cause a little stir, cuz she seems to like that shit
Breathing Oxyjenn Lol cause shes UV!
Yeah, I found that odd also 🤔
lol damage control
Was all of that caused by not eating animal products? Were these things related to diet?
@@therobin980 I got the same as Koulouropodaro. When I eat animal products my health issues disappear. I think some people can tolerate vegan diets. Other people just can't.
Can someone explain why she keeps mentioning oysters? Does she not consider oysters an animal?
How to donate to your channel? You left Patreon some time ago and I don't see another mechanism to make a monthly donation. Thanks
I get severe acne when vegan, completely disappears when I'm not.
in minute 23.18 she said she started taking "sobino"/ "sombino" ? can anyone tell me what that is?
I believe she mentioned symptoms like those of crohns disease in her video but I can't be sure.
Bloating, indigestion, acid reflux, constipation or diahrrea, stomach cramps. That's all you get when you have gut issues.
@@TheBobbysPerspective I mention this on my blog as well.
Bobby's Perspective she was not comparing the two from a nutritional stand point, she just said mock meats are low on fiber, so, if fiber was the issue, it would have been an alternative to fish.
Mahtiah Hildrilae maybe not for you, but it is for lots of other people.
I wish people would stop suggesting mock meat. Mock meat is full of shit. And still have beans etc in most of them, and wheat.
what about insects? would you consider things like crickets sentient? Im not talking about insects killed in agriculture but rather eating farmed crickets that are killed via freezing.
Michael A. Luna I’ve always been curious about insects in veganism 🤔
yess this would be very interesting to hear about!!
Insects are so sustainable in terms of protein per weight but I wonder about their pain tolerance (do they even have nervous systems?)
I would eat insects but unfortunately they taste like nothing and look disgusting. A piece of mock meat is absolutely more delicious and satisfying than insects.
Isn’t it just more satisfying and easy just to be vegan ?
You keep mentioning that oyster aren’t sentient, but I was wondering about other options such as scallops etc? I watched your oyster video but can’t seem to understand if scallops are more sentient than oysters?
Completely irrelevant to the video, but your hair is looking fabulous. So shiny!
Why are oysters not sentient ?
I don't think you realize what ingredients are actually in some of the mock meats you suggest. I'll help:
The Beyond Burger: pea protein isolate, expeller-pressed canola oil, refined coconut oil, water, yeast extract, maltodextrin, natural flavors, gum arabic, sunflower oil, salt, succinic acid, acetic acid, non-GMO modified food starch, cellulose from bamboo, methylcellulose, potato starch, beet juice extract (for color), ascorbic acid (to maintain color), annatto extract (for color), citrus fruit extract (to maintain quality), vegetable glycerin.
I have bad reactions to both onions and garlic, and I feel fairly confident that they are both part of the 'natural flavors.'
You haven't done enough research on this.
So oysters are not sentinent? Does this apply to any other seafood or just this particular species?
Well said.
my mother keeps chickens as pets, they're like outside family and fed the best food she can find for them, like worms and nutritious weed on top of a varied diet (for a chicken). They have a lot of space, names and won't be killed once they stop laying eggs. The only thing she can't let them do is breed, because where would the chicklings go?
Would you guys say that it's ethical to eat their eggs?
What about SIBO, candida and organic acids test are they all bogus?
They like to ignore these facts cause then they'd have to admit they are wrong.
RoaringMind
I agree.
