Kronen is obviously a meta joke on K9999 but i don't think they removed him from KOF2002 just for that.
I have never seen a character with a weirder history than K9999. Like, I cannot fathom what the developers were cooking and I'm pretty sure it wasn't food

@@Hawkatana Yeah, like, the SF2 cast are mostly stereotypes, but they've got fantastical abilities or wacky design elements or just go all the way with their stereotype. Dhalsim isn't just an Indian guy, or even an Indian yogi, he's an Indian yogi with stretchy limbs and fire-breathing. Guile is an American soldier, but he also has Stroheim's haircut and can pull off crazy somersaults. Even E. Honda is basically just a sumo wrestler (albeit one in kabuki makeup), but a sumo wrestler is distinctive enough, as a fighting style, to still work as a distinct character. Meanwhile, look at Lee in Street Fighter 1. His design is just "Chinese guy", and his fighting style is "he punches and kicks." Or how about Mike? We know that Balrog is based on Mike Tyson because he's, like, a boxer; he wears boxing gear and has all kinds of boxing-based moves. But Mike is just a guy in jeans, and the only thing to really mark him as a boxer is that he doesn't use kicks.
@@BIGBLUBLURThat would be funny. The goofiest thing about Xanadu, is that Kukri, a character who has some mystical ties, responds to Xanadu's gibberish with *gibberish of his own,* implying that either Kukri is fucking with him by playing along, or Xanadu's "god" is some actual mystical thing.
The funny part about Xanadu's gibberish is that everything he's saying is actually pretty basic, with the main takeaway being that he always exaggerates his sentences and makes them into long-winded speeches. For example, in the Team Villains KOF XIV ending, Xanadu burns the check for the prize money because he seeks *actual* power and not monetary power. When Chang & Choi ask him why he did that, instead of telling them he doesn't care about money, he just rambles on and calls them potatoes without telling them directly. In Chang and Choi's defense though, they were always scared of Xanadu and they only teamed up with him out of fear for their lives and they thought somebody as scary as him would help them get back at Kim after they went back to prison.
@@antonhanna2423 Xanadu is pretty aware of what was going on around the plot of KoF XIV. He is one of the guys in XIV and in the XIV manga that can sense the magic stuff happening around Verse and Shun'ei and whatnot. I for one like Xanadu ngl.

I will admit the K9999 stunt absolutely got me too, in this video alone. I went from just learning about his existence to cheering for his return in the span of about 10 minutes!
My theory about Khronen is that the constant retconning was a meta arc. Khronen's existence was being memoryhole'd by the organization that made him to avoid culpability for what he'd do, and he played along to bide his time and find out who he really is. So, while they destroyed any and all records of his existence, he and those who stuck with him just refused to acknolwedge who he was and used it to find out who he IS. Hence why the artist who had specifically pigeonholed himself into drawing him simply drew "a guy in a big green hoodie." It _was_ him, but laying low. Maybe at one point it was a legal concern, but they moved past it and realized they had an interesting angle to work with and just rolled with it.
I think it's more that way. It's pretty improbable for me that they removed him from KOF2002 with the whole intent to use him as a meta joke, to the point of creating one brand new character to replace him.
I like this head canon, and really makes me wish they had changed his personality a bit more from K’. Maybe play more into an almost hippie free spirit in that exploring and figuring out who he is. Like seeing Kyo and especially K’ can still get a raise out of him. But making him more mellow than K’ would give him some unique qualities to stand out more in future games.
So like I don't know anything about mortal combat but Khameleon surviving her people by turning invisible is that just something they can do cause if so the fact that only worked for her is genuinely hysterical

To be fair, he also has one of the cooler fatalities in Deadly Alliance. I agree in that some form of Q's playstyle should return in SF6, he was my favourite in Third Impact after all.
I have yet to meet someone who first tried character in a new fighting game because they were competitively strong, it’s always how they look. In my case, I chose meta knight in brawl because I thought he looked cool, but I had no clue he was the best character in the game! 😅

Dr. Baldhead from the first Guilty Gear game is a fun example of a character that TECHNICALLY never came back because at the end of his arcade mode he “disappeared forever”…but in the very next game they introduced Faust, a character with the same backstory and near identical commands who just appeared out of nowhere one day. Funny how that works, huh? They never even outright say they’re the same person officially anywhere because it’s so obvious that they don’t have to. OKAY HI UPDATE: I was going through some old Japanese concept art/design documents for GGX (or maybe it was XX? Idk) and there I found very subtle and sneaky confirmation of Faust being Baldhead. Necalli being an immortal soul eating aztec monster who wouldve been the beginning of the psycho power or satsui no hado was such an awesome idea with a fantastic design. @@galanga21890 Hsu Hao's biggest problems are his design and him being brand x Kano. If they change his character and made him into a mobile grappler that used his wind clap and stomp for trapping he would probably go over well.
If I had to do something with Hsu Hao I'd go with the hard left turn joke and turn him into a retired criminal who's settled down as a chef and family man who runs a restaurant selling exceptional food at affordable prices, and the only reason he fights is because he has a deal with the Special Forces that sometimes he does work for them and in return he stays out of prison. His arcade ladder ending is that he's done enough work to have his crimes fully forgiven so he just goes home and nobody ever hears from him again.

I SWEAR this has a context. Remy hates fighters because his father left him and his sister to go fight around the world. His sister ended up dying so Remy blamed all fighters and went on a quest to beat everyone (also he turns his dead sister into a block of ice, at fist I thought he had ice powers, but apparantly his projectiles are just energy, so dont ask me how he did that). His ending represents him moving on from both his grief and his anger, finally letting his sister go.
Honestly I don't follow fighting games much outside absorbing tidbits from a couple friends, but that kinda just makes me love these even more! All sorts of new stuff to hear about in a genre just familiar enough that I know what's going on :D
I understand the whole call of “no reason for nameless” but I must admit. He is my fave. I loved seeing krohnen in 15 but considering nameless had 1 game to make his mark, he has a awesome theme, a cool look, and a unique story for a “replacement character slot”
35:41 what’s funny is that Kobra actually looks a lot like Johnny from karate kid. We could’ve leaned into that and gave him a fatality where he sweeps your leg or something.
Q is my favorite street fighter character, not because of the mystery, but because he is the most obvious "Not a martial artist" in the whole series, even more so than Blanka. He fights like somebody who never actually learned to fight, and is just so strong that he can get away with it against trained opponents. Even watching high-level play, ESPECIALLY with his "taunt-to-power-up" gimmick, he's just kinda **Doin' stuff**, and I'd love to finally see it against SF's traditional roster. I want to see this scrawny, untrained cyborg(?) throw Zangief.
*Monkey's Paw Curls* ...So you like Ghostface? (Apparently, GhostFace on Mk 1 Dlc is the original GhostFace plus Kira and Kobra. They do find increasing creative ways to bring back old character.)
The reason I’ll never forget about Remy is due to the fact that I own his figure, which I originally got from booth selling retro toys at a convention i attended annually, it was always there every time visited that booth, and so one year I decided to just buy it outright, since then the figure has stood proudly on my shelf, so that’s why I can’t forget.
Absolutely amazing video, excellent job. Specifically I wanna single out K9999’s section. I’m a big fan of SNK, so seeing you recap this dude’s insane history right down to all the small tidbits about his special intro with Kusanagi and his eventual resurfacing. Truly magnificent.
I'mma be real. The team that got cut in KOF '94 are my favorite KOF characters in KOF '98. The projectile is just that weird and the charm is undeniable. I do hope at least Lucky makes it to KOF XV. Maybe I'll fight someone good and regret my choices.

I legit was thinking about all of the cool forgotten characters in my favorite fighting games (I play Q in Third Strike that’s how it started) and then I see this appear in my fypage. Talk about timing
Fun fact: dairou is also the best character in the game because of his full screen unblockable attack that’s nearly unavoidable because jumping is slow and unsafe
Don't know if anyone else has commented this yet, but Bumbles did a really good job of explaining these characters mechanically in a way that makes sense to fighting game novices, like when he breaks down Remy's mechanics and how parrying works. Nice work! 👍
I won't lie, if it wasn't for Eagle existing, I wouldn't touch Alpha 3 Max (well, besides the fact that it has Fei Long, Maki, and you don't have to use a special input to select Balrog).
I'd argue that this needs to be a series, and two-and-done characters could also work in it; Rufus is an example of a two-and-done because of SFxT (SFxT can be considered a "dream match" that reused assets for Rufus, so he might just be a one-and-done anyway). Eagle is a two-and-a-half-and-done; CvS2, some alternate versions of Alpha 3 that are no longer in circulation, and as a nonselectable character in SF1.
My K9999 guess: right after the game dropped the legal team assumed Toho would go full Japanese copyright law on them and had him excised from all future material. But then that didn't happen and the team decided to roll with the mystery as a prank
I hope this becomes a regular thing as so many fighting games have that 1 weird character that is never mentioned or acknowledged, so it would be cool if this goes on like your delisted games video
Seeing Olcadan in the intro and not seeing a Soul Calibur section as well as scrolling through comments seeing other people list characters really makes a part 2 sound like a fun video idea. I know Olcadan was basically just the "Random Character" character, but he was kinda silly if I remember his endings right and I'm positive Soul Calibur has to have other weird one-off characters who didn't come back. Honestly thinking about Soul Calibur 3 again makes me wonder if there's video potential of like, "Alternate modes in video games that were cooler than they should have been", that game had a whole story mode where you made a custom character and had a full on epic happen that barely referenced the plot details of the main cast (aside from Soul Edge, and the fact that on the maps the main cast would just be super bosses who'd wreck people who tried to fight them).
@@karmicrespite5737 a little late but that's really cool and there's another contender in Soul Calibur that's very obvious because of who created the character that being Necrid well that and the fact Talim cured him from Soul Edge even tho fighting games always bring up the supposedly dead characters like Gen is an example and why I don't fully believe he's dead even if V implied he died but I'm sure he'll walk it off
Q and Krohnen are my absolute favorite characters in their respective series, no contest. That said, I don't even know if I want Q to come back, if him coming back would ruin the mystery (or, even worse, they'd make his gameplan less interesting)
@@Feuerhamster I do like G, yeah. I think the reason G works as a continuation-prequel to Q is that we don't really know what they are to one another. We can speculate, but we can't really tell exactly whether or not G is a more cognizant Q or if Q is a robot poorly imitating its creator's fighting style--The details aren't obvious, and we only know "yeah they're maybe the same guy". I like that, but it doesn't really solve the "Would this guy really work if they answered anything about him?" problem, you know?
I'd argue that counts as like, the most "Dream Game" of all dream games. It has every fighter come back from previous entries* AND includes a bunch of crossovers that would likely have issues with coming back in future Smash games if any more are made. Good luck getting P5 Joker (P6 may be out by the time the next Smash would release and while Atlas milks franchises they tend to do the newer ones) and Sora (notoriously a dream pick to the point that he's the last character to be put in the series unless either a new game or something crazy happens) in a game again. *The only 'characters' who don't come back from what I recall are basically specific versions of characters who did come back, such as Zelda and Shiek now being separate characters in Ultimate and Link being the BotW version with remote bombs instead of previous versions. Everyone else is roughly the same aside from buffs/nerfs gameplay wise as far as I know.
Whoever decided to make a character be the one to play against a less experienced player to give them a chance clearly was an only child. As a youngest child, my siblings showed me no such mercy.
A thing I'm always surprised people don't pick up on about Kobra... He's Johnny Lawrence, from the Karate Kid. That's why he's named Kobra, like, Cobra Kai? The Black and Yellow colourscheme with the snake aesthetic, the backstory of being a martial arts trainee-thug who eventually goes mad with violence and descends into becoming a psychopath? It's meant to be "whatever happened to the guy from Karate Kid", and I don't know why people miss that.
Ayyy Big Yellow mentioned! I'm very confident Sean will return in SF6, both for Ken's character arc, and because of Luke. Luke would be a great rival to Sean, in the way that Karin or Makoto are to Sakura.
Ok but if you’ve watched high level third strike you know how sick Remy is at high level, not as a zoner but as a rush down pressure oriented character watch Pierrot legit my favorite 3S player to watch, Remy ended up accidentally having an incredibly unique and engaging gameplay style that’s insanely difficult to use because of charge partitioning, parries and all the weird Third Strike Mechanics, he’s still not great but he’s usable Plus his theme slaps so I give him credit there
17:00 This really drives home why the whole "shotoclone" term is a thing. Because that particular move-set and fighting style has been employed rather several times. XD
SNK really shot themselves in the foot with team USA. They should just put them in as a base roster team, and see that way if "Hey, people actually DO like playing these characters" or not, without the gamble of "Will people actually go out their way to buy these guys separately as their own DLC?"
If I was to reintroduce Team American Sports, I'd have them actually fight and beat Iori's team, and steal their letters, the reason no one's heard of them directly in such a long time is because they were on an extended training arc/ dramatically exceeding all expectations for their respective sports, before returning to prove that they weren't just a one off thing, then, the next Team American Sports would be their kids, with different sports being represented.
Maybe whenever SoulCalibur VII comes out, we can get a follow-up that, at least in part, go into the new characters from SoulCalibur V and why most of them are highly unlikely to ever return, as well as how long it took for Hwang to finally return as a playable character.
For personal honorable mentions, Touhou, because if your attention span (like me) is not high enough to comprehend millions of projectiles flying at you in f off miles per hour, you'd be happy to know that Touhou also has its own set of fighting games to make getting into the franchise... somewhat significantly easier. One thing to note though is that the franchise's creator, ZUN, has a habit of creating characters and shoving them under the rug for 15 years, with the more notable escapees usually being late stage bosses or whatever he feels like bringing back. What, do you think the fighters are exempt from this? Iku, Sanae, Cirno, Alice, Patchouli, Utsuho, and some other characters I may or may not have missed since it has been a while since I played one of these games, do feel free to ask them if they're "exempt" from this rule. Note : This comment is in regards to said characters' fighting game appearances, no bullet hells, no photo games, no official comics, JUST fighters in general. And canon ones too. I also scribbled out newer characters introduced in the 14.5-15.5 games because aside from the fact that since most of the 14.5 roster would go on to make appearances in the sequel game AoCF, the only one that could technically be considered one and dones around those parts are the Yorigami Sisters, which at the time of writing this, are practically the last new characters introduced by the Touhou fighters and the last fighter bosses in the franchise in general. And besides, ZUN cuts out characters as frequently as I make up excuses to my parents about why I don't wanna leave my house, if we account every type of game in the franchise for this even though this video is explicitly about fighting games, we'd be here all day. Heck, ZUN cuts characters so frequently (even if it is mostly early stage adversaries) that you could make an ENTIRE VIDEO SPECIFICALLY ABOUT TOUHOU ONE AND DONES. But I'm not sure if Bumbles is ready for that video yet since like I said, Jesus Harold Christ does the funny beer drunk with the funny green cap cut a LOT of characters.
This is a really entertaining video. One honorable mention not included in the vid is Q-Bee from Darkstalkers. Her design is unique and captivating but Capcom probably doesn't know what to do with her afterwards.
Heavy D and Lucky Glauber are realistically the only ones salvageable from that team. (The former more than the latter.) A good idea to bring Heavy D back, would be teaming him up with Vanessa and Rick Strowd, creating a "USA Boxing" team.

The goofiest thing about Xanadu, is that Kukri, a character who has some mystical ties, responds to Xanadu's gibberish with *gibberish of his own,* implying that either Kukri is fucking with him by playing along, or Xanadu's "god" is some actual mystical thing.
The fact that both could be plausible is scary and perfectly on brand for Kukri

Long Live K9999.

Bumbles I wanna thank you for exclusively making content just for me and my interests.
@@karmicrespite5737 a little late but that's really cool and there's another contender in Soul Calibur that's very obvious because of who created the character that being Necrid well that and the fact Talim cured him from Soul Edge even tho fighting games always bring up the supposedly dead characters like Gen is an example and why I don't fully believe he's dead even if V implied he died but I'm sure he'll walk it off
For Me, One Of The Most Obscure Fighting Game Characters Was Amingo From Marvel Vs Capcom 2.
...I Miss Him So Much...
Q and Krohnen are my absolute favorite characters in their respective series, no contest. That said, I don't even know if I want Q to come back, if him coming back would ruin the mystery (or, even worse, they'd make his gameplan less interesting)
Krohnen is great in the Studio Still fandub of KoFXV
He DID kinda come back as G, implied to be his pre-brainwashed self.
The story of K999 is the single strangest video game story I have ever heard in my nearly 30 years of gaming.
Gotta love how thanks to Smash Ultimate NONE of those guys qualify for this vid
I have a feeling most, if not all, of the Sm4sh newcomers would be cut. Ultimate's "dream match" status only had them return out of obligation.
Wow imagine if I watched this video without first watching the Magneto vs Tetsuo Death Battle just yesterday that would have been embarrassing for me
Whoever decided to make a character be the one to play against a less experienced player to give them a chance clearly was an only child.
Yeaaaah, SNK is probably one of the most clinically insane game companies out there.
Ayyy Big Yellow mentioned!
I'm very confident Sean will return in SF6, both for Ken's character arc, and because of Luke. Luke would be a great rival to Sean, in the way that Karin or Makoto are to Sakura.
Shame you don't hear of them anymore. It would be nice to see what they would do if they brought it back and how people would react.
The Kira and Kobra section has aged weirdly as they have now returned as playable characters as ghostface?
Ok but if you’ve watched high level third strike you know how sick Remy is at high level, not as a zoner but as a rush down pressure oriented character watch Pierrot legit my favorite 3S player to watch, Remy ended up accidentally having an incredibly unique and engaging gameplay style that’s insanely difficult to use because of charge partitioning, parries and all the weird Third Strike Mechanics, he’s still not great but he’s usable
Plus his theme slaps so I give him credit there
Remy just have a SF4 DeeJay syndrome that's all
17:00 This really drives home why the whole "shotoclone" term is a thing.
The whole K9999 thing.....they were just trolling, i love it
BEYBLADE: METAL MASTER ON THE DS MENTIONED!!!!
Gaming truly peaked with that game, it’s all downhill from here
For personal honorable mentions, Touhou, because if your attention span (like me) is not high enough to comprehend millions of projectiles flying at you in f off miles per hour, you'd be happy to know that Touhou also has its own set of fighting games to make getting into the franchise... somewhat significantly easier.
Fumbles bumbling through another video about a game-Genre I really do not play or know anything about? Fuck yeah, let's go!
