  • They Taycan is a great car, and I'm a huge fan of it. But it's landed on some choppy waters recently.
    Could this be the start of the end for Taycan sales as they are now?

      To go and buy it for 50k in good condition and low mileage it’s worth it 100%, if you consider that is a “tax free” luxury car makes it more easy to go with

  • @pjroberts2010

    First, anyone worried about price or depreciation shouldn't be buying any new car. Everything depreciates. Just enjoy what you have. Think of it like a holiday: you spend 5 to 10k per year and might not have anything tangible in return, but you have happy memories.
    Secondly, Porsche needs to maintain high prices to protect its brand. If everyone started driving Taycans like they do Teslas, it would kill the brand. They would become so common that people would no longer find them special. They're expensive for a reason. Essentially, you're paying for the badge, and because they're expensive, driving one feels unique. To me, that’s a good feeling.
    People might switch back to ICE cars for various reasons: lease terms ending, affordability, company car policies, practicality, and more. Personally, I love my Taycan-no regrets. People who hate them tend not to be able to afford them.

      We just picked up our ‘24 Taycan last week. We have wanted an EV for a long time, but as TSLA delivery was so unpredictable we looked at other manufacturers and fell in love with the Taycan. We bought the entry level model and it has everything we need and it was more affordable for us. When we see videos that are so negative for the depreciation, etc. it is disheartening, but hopefully, we will keep it for several years and enjoy every minute of driving it. Thus far, there is no comparison between the beauty and comfort of this car vs. the Model S we almost purchased. Can anyone suggest an aftermarket sunvisor for the windshield? Thanks!

    • @dnuno75
      @dnuno75 2 місяці тому +1

      Agree.
      No comparison whatsoever with Tesla in terms of production, marketing or even philosophy.
      Porsche will not manufacture cars as if they were undistinguishable mass market devices. The content in mechanical hardware - what makes a car a car -, the possibilities of personalization, the quality control, all those are in another league light-years away. You can even choose your color, outside of a scant b&w mini-palette, with assured quality :)
      So there we have Porsche's price, not just the brand, it's the whole content, the whole quality and the brand experience - in many ways.

      Indeed, the few vehicles not depreciating (as much) are those made by specialty car makers (who could NEVER be big car companies, because NO MAJOR car companies would produce cars that don't depreciate) who make only a few dozen to a few hundred stupidly useless cars catering to a few dozen to a few hundred "unique individuals, with money and taste." It's a complete Ponzi Scheme, such BS.
      Real vehicles, driven by consumers WILL depreciate 100% of of the time.
      The moral, the lesson, the education, should be: if you don't make multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars PER YEAR, at the very least, you should NOT be buying cars that cost several hundred thousands dollars! (Ideally, you SHOULDN'T have to work... you should simply have many millions in the bank, if you want to buy cars that cost $150K to $250K easy. That's the only way that NORMAL vehicle depreciation wouldn't "hurt" you.)
      Middle class workers who earn $50K to $150K a year who think they could or should buy a Taycan or a 911 or a McClaren or a Mercedes Benz S-class.... are just idiots.
      Ditto for kids and twenties some thing "artists" who make $500K to $2M in one or two years doing mindless UA-cam videos who think they've "made it in life" (only to find out, 2-3 years later, people and markets have moved on and their BS no longer earns them those $500K - $2M a year incomes) who are, then, stuck with a Taycan or a 911 or an MAG gt 63/S-class that is worth only 1/3 of the sticker price they bought just a year or two ago but a car for which they still have to make premium monthly payments on....

    UK tax rules will change from end Mar '25.
    This will kill off many new company purchases for the more expensive EVs. Add-in the Taycan 2 price increases, ludicrous service charges for an EV, and together the govt + Porsche appear to be working hard to screw their customers and kill their market.
    And you can add to this rocketing insurance.
    Oh, and the small matter of depreciation.
    I love my 4s CT to drive - fast, handles well, fabulous on the motorway (better than anything else I've been in).
    Plus it looks great and the boot is decent enough for my dog or a bike.
    But to own, it has to be contrasted with being too big to park in many public spaces (length and width) and the UX / UI is very poor in many areas. Having said that, it was no better in a brand new Macan that I was in last week.
    I can live with the terrible efficiency and poor range because I rarely need it for long journeys.
    - 6 mile winter work commute is barely over 1m/kwh. Almost doubles in the summer.
    - 140 mile drive last week was 3m/khw; which is probably as good as mine will get.
    Overall, as a daily driver I'm still on the fence between is it amazing or not good enough.
    With the help of current tax rules, I'm leaning towards amazing.

      @TABonTV  2 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, that's quite a swing on the m/kW. Surprisingly low in winter for a 4S. They do a lot very well, but they'll need a lot of continual improvement.
      Facelift helps with the bigger battery, but they'll need to do more to keep it competitive, especially with regards pricing.

    I think Porsche have got a good strategy for the future legislation, which they are being forced to do. People forget that large premium saloons always depreciated very badly. Look at all the previous BMW 7 series, and S-Class; you were guaranteed to lose more than 50%, and they were offering heavy 5 figure discounts new. Taycans are more expensive, but performance has jumped, so you can go down a model for the same performance, Turbo S to new Turbo for example. EV Macans & Caymans will do a lot better in the market.
    They key point is that Porsche know which way the legislation is going, with the ZEV mandate, and 2030/35 rules, manufacturers simply have to sell an ever increasing percentage of EVs, and are already withdrawing allocations for normal ICE models to force dealers to sell EVs. BMW are particularly bad at holding back allocations for performance ICE cars.
    The new Taycan is a big jump with 320 mile real-world range, and it has given them a big advantage on the rest of the market. The 330kw charging is miles ahead of competitors.
    In some markets like France, the taxes are so high on pure ICE cars, tens of thousands of €, that already some markets demand only hybrid or EV models in 2024.
    Look at the price at a ten year old Panamera, people were always wrong if they thought a four-door Porsche saloon car would hold its value well.
    For your car, I’d hand it back at your agreed higher than value price, then just wait until used gen 2 Taycan Turbo fall to the same price - which it will!

    • @TABonTV

    Having owned 8 EVs, I enjoyed my 2022 Taycan 4S for the handling and styling, liked the ergonomics. But range was bottom of the barrel in ev world, EA charge network not reliable for long trips, I hated the two speed transmission and the fact that it was slower than my 2018 model 3 AWD+ even in launch mode and slower than all 2021+ Tesla model S. When Plaid S prices dropped $30K and offered a round steering wheel I traded my Taycan in. Plaid S is lighter with twice the power and almost twice the range and a better charge network, also much more space, and offers very fun handling options in track mode (though very safe but boaty steering in Plaid mode). Still quicker than new Taycan Turbo GT unless you remove the roof, rear seats, and stereo to get a 4 door 2 seater. I hope Porsche can drop the Uber slow rwd Taycan, put a motor in that doesn't need a two speed transmission, increase the range and drop some weight so someday I might trade my Plaid S in but I find it unlikely. Lovely great handling car but way too heavy, expensive and slow (unless you spend $250k and give up all practicality) given the current EV market.

    • @TABonTV
      @TABonTV  23 дні тому +1

      The price of the plaid and the price of the GT / Turbo S just doesn't stack up. This is why you're seeing such monumental depreciation on Taycans. The plaid is priced right.

    All 2nd hand EV cars depreciate because of the rapid increase in EV car quality. It is not different with my 2017 model S I drive currently. I do drive my cars for about 7-9 years so basically I don't care if a car depreciates. I'm looking forward at the delivery of a 2025 Taycan ST turbo early next year.

Got a further £750 cash towards a charger even though the car comes with a 7kW charger! and then to top it off got the highest trade in value on my trade in car compared to anywhere else. I am a die-hard Porsche lover and I cherish the Taycan!
    I think we should wait a couple of weeks or months to assess the Taycan sales trends in Q2 and Q3.
    Anyway, my take on this subject - from Portugal:
    1. Depreciation - we know this is normally harder on the saloons and SUVs compared to the 911 and 718. I hear a lot about Taycan depreciation in UK, maybe this is more acute there due to financing cycles and specificities - perhaps the current economic outlook in UK doesn't help either.
    In mainland Europe I don't see much difference in depreciation of Taycan vs Panamera (e.g. vf. AutoScout24).
    2. Price - indeed the Taycan prices have risen significantly since launch and now with the facelift. However, here in Portugal it still compares quite favourably with the Panamera, maybe due to our tax system.
    I think the added content justifies the higher prices of the new Taycan. I would also guess that probably Porsche can raise the price in view of their supply & demand outlook. And perhaps they are trying to protect resale values of 1st gen.
    3. Turbo S price - normally this version is not much different from the regular Turbo but the additional kit justifies the extra price. The new Turbo S price is quite high, don't know the equipment in detail, in my view it could have Active Ride as standard which it doesn't.
    Here in Portugal the Turbo/Turbo S price gap is larger than Turbo S/Turbo GT, which seems a bit weird.
    4. Competition - market wise I find the Taycan is a bit on its own league - just like Porsche generally. Its prices compare well with the likes of BMW or Mercedes, and it is much better value than for example current EV offers from Maserati and possibly future ones from Ferrari. The Plaid is almost just a one-trick horse, much less cohesive and distinctive overall package, it only offers a lot more room for those who must.
    Finally, I don't think that the Lotus brand has much traction outside of UK and US right now to make a significant dent on Porsche - even without delving into technical and design details. Also Polestar may be a bit out of its depth. And forget about (other) Chinese brands.
    Greetings and keep up the good work!

    Hi.
    If you buy a Porsche, you buy a Porsche!!!
    That's also a strategic point behind the prices!
    If you want an affordable car, you can buy a Hyundai EV 6 or EV 9 or a car of the Volkswagen 🆔 series or a Tesla and so on.
    If you want something unique with outstanding quality and driving solutions you have to take more money 💵 in your hands!
    Or let us ask for other reasons. Why do you buy an Aston Martin, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Lamborghini, Ferrari or any else high expensive cars?
    Because you get exclusivity for the badge! And in Porsches case you get the most individual and innovative car to configure as sportscar with outstanding track experience!
    That's what you pay for!
    Sure, the time where you buy a Porsche, hold it for 5 years and sell it for double price again is definitely over!
    But that's over the market the reality for all cars by now. It's no longer the "invest" to generate more money out of a badge as it was in the 1990s!
    To buy a Porsche and to drive it, also as daily, is a unique process and has to be reserved for the people who can pay for it!
    So don't worry about your money when buying a supercar! Just feel good to have one and put a smile ☺ on your face while driving it! Because you know, only a few people do really afford driving a Porsche as it is!
    The business buyers are always only interested to show what their "business" is worth, mostly without having the money for real to buy it privately! So they order it only for show and let the people outside pay for it through taxes.
    It's okay but not the meaning of the Porsche brand making real special sportscars of joy!

    The EV market across emtb’s or ev cars , anything battery tech is being affected by the rapid growth and development of the new items coming to the market - this ultimately drives pre owned prices down very quickly. I personally drive a 2016 Cayenne S e hybrid sourced pre owned via Porsche main dealer and I love the hybrid set up . The other issue is when in time will ICE only cars also suddenly see their residual values disappear as there’s no doubt our government will force them off the roads .

      Where I live ICE cars will no longer be able to be purchased brand new starting in 2035. That’s a tad bit more than 10 years. My guess is that about 10 years after that gasoline (petrol for you Brits) will extremely expensive and have the same difficulty to find as a working non Tesla DC fast charger is today. So in about 20 years total the paradigm of EV vs ICE will be flipped. Right now my daily is a 20 year old MB CLK 320 that probably has at least another 10 years on it. I’m looking at receiving a once in a lifetime sum of money, and purchasing a new vehicle is one of the things I am considering doing with it. I have about 35 years left with my life expectancy, and there’s only a handful of manufacturers that have a track record of making vehicles that can last that long as daily driven cars. Porsche is one of those manufacturers. When you combine all those factors together a slightly used Taycan Turbo S or a new Macan Electric seem to be the logical choice. Of course cheaper options are available up front, but once one does the math a Porsche properly taken care of will last as long as three of the cheaper cars for the same aggregate price while also being ten times more enjoyable.

    • @TABonTV
      @TABonTV  2 місяці тому +2

      Both great comments there. The death of ICE is going to happen, I just wonder how it will happen - what will be the first thing that starts to become difficult? Expensive fuel? Taxes? Even penalties?

    • @jawndoekck
      @jawndoekck 2 місяці тому +1

      @@TABonTV if you look at the places with the highest fuel prices right now such as Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Hong Kong, and the Netherlands you will notice they also have the highest per capita EV ownership. The particular state where I live in the USA has the highest taxes on fuel here, which has caused fuel prices to be 66 percent higher than our national average. My state also has the highest EV ownership in the USA. So the answer your question I think it will be a combination of the two that will then be pushed over the edge when the existing ICE cars (can no longer be purchased new in 2035) that have mechanical malfunctions cannot be repaired due to a lack of replacement parts.

    Availability of finance allows companies to increase prices disproportionately, as the consumer only looks at the, relatively, small increase in monthly payments. This is not a good feature of the market place for the general public, it IS a good way of transferring wealth from the poorer to the richer sectors of society. Big business, ie the rich, realised this and supported the Tory government in the 80s to relax credit controls. Now it is possible to purchase virtually anything on credit. Prices are higher than they would otherwise be and people own less, if you use credit to buy then the property isn’t yours. Large numbers of people are now locked into paying out significant proportions of their monthly incomes and, if each ‘buyer’ wants to have a new car every two/three years, it’s forever! (Such consumerism isn’t good for the planet either, but that’s another discussion).

    The Taycan is a deeply flawed product that woos and infuriates in equal measure!
    Positives: looks; acceleration; build quality; cachet, ride.
    Negatives: Price; depreciation; range (even after the refresh - the WLPT live in fantasy land); too early in technology curve (far better products in the pipeline); packaging - space/awkward door apertures ; dreadful brakes - the transition from regen to brake disc is poorly managed; abysmal reliability (the senior manager at a major Porsche dealership told me that he was advising his friends not to go near them); finally the environmental absurdity of a 2.3 ton sports saloon!
    I have owned 11 Porsches and currently have 3. I have owned two electric cars and have driven the 3 varieties of Taycan - 4S, Turbo S and GTS, so I don’t come at this with a prejudicial view.
    For those who love their Taycan, that’s great and it is clearly the right choice for them… I was tempted but ended up being deeply disappointed in the product… there are over 700 on AutoTrader for a reason!

    I have had 2 Taycans (base models bit heavily specced). The car is beautiful to look at and to drive when everything is working and therein lies the problem. On many occasions, not all systems worked, not mechanical, but over the air and system issues. What I dont think has been mentioned is the service from Porsche dealerships. Every time I had an issue which did not resolve itself and living in NW London, I would contact both Porsche in Hatfield or Chiswick. In both cases they could normally fit me in about 3 weeks later. Then I would say I needed a hire car, in which case I would be given a slot in about 6-8 weeks. Totally unacceptable; furthermore I do not think the UK service technicians knew how to deal with the car as it was usually an over the air issue and they were at the "mercy" of those dealing with the servers in Germany. The range was also woeful particularly in winter. In the end, I have given up and moved to a Mercedes EQS; totally different but so far reliable and a range of 400+ miles.

      I don't think it has range of 400+ miles. Per official figures, Mercedes EQS 450 and 580 both have the same size battery (108.4kWh) and both have dual motor set-ups for all-wheel drive. In fact, Mercedes claims there’s only about a mile difference in the two variant’s ranges: up to 364 miles for the 450; up to 363 miles for the 580.
      Yes, Porsche Taycan definitely has lower range, but a comparable Macan 4 SUV with lower 100kWh battery has similar range of 381, and probably a better choice.

    VW are still passing the emissions' fiddle fines over to the customer.

    The Taycan is by far the “least shit” EV I’ve driven. I still rate a macan or cayenne outside base trim, and any 911 or 718 as being infinitely better to drive. I haven’t driven all the variants but quite a lot.

      Cayenne just doesn't do it for me at all. Just one of those things.

      “Least shit” 😂😂 no matter how much you haters/losers talk shit online, the Taycan is now the fastest Porsche EVER. Btw I’ve owned both Macan GTS and Turbo, a Taycan even with the shittiest spec is 2 leagues above any Cayenne or Macan (which is Porsche’s fault anyway)

      @@hovanesmarkaryan896 I dunno way back in the day when EVs first came out I had a E92 M3 I used as my daily and I went to test the fastest Tesla. I think this was like 2013 or 2014. I was amazed at how fast the thing was like waaaaaaay faster than the M3 but so boring and when I got back in the M3 to drive home it made me appreciate it so much more. Same with Taycans vs other ICE Porsches for me, but each to his or her own!

      Ev owner since '14.... taycan is horrible range for the price. Porsche does not understand the ev market if this is anything other than a low production niche.

      One thing the Taycan does have going for it, it's a brilliant drive.

      @TABonTV range bites. I love EVs but need real world range. 200 is miles on a good day is niche - as it becomes 160 quickly if on a major hwy. I did look at the taycan turismo but ended up with a model x after comparing - self drive and an actual charger network

    There is a great feeling this guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Going around in circles and tripping over himself while claiming to know better than Porsche. Funny but I don’t think he’ll get hired.
