  • It's Cobra Convergence VI. The theme this year is "COBRA BLUE", why settle for one blue Cobra review when you can review ALL OF THEM?!
    Rob and Steve discuss a formidable list of blue figures and vehicles from the classic GI Joe run and determine which toys rise to the top of the pile and why.

    Love that Range Viper 👍

  • @rangeviper8421
    @rangeviper8421 5 років тому +2

    Appreciate the Range-Viper love. You glossed over the mortar launcher, but this was a pretty unique “flick” launcher, much more subtle than the spring-loaded excess of future lines. Great reviews and great video. C.O.B.R.A.

    • @gijoburg
      @gijoburg  5 років тому +1

      I glossed the launcher mainly because I lost the projectile and have made do with an off-brand flashlight ever since! Plus it doesn’t work as a finger-flick missile. Woe is me. Range Viper has a pretty lengthy history in my collection and many a drama. Left my initial one riding the subway in London back in ‘93. Would a complete FF missile launcher have pushed Range Viper into the mythical number one spot? We may never know... man needs a machine gun and a third arm to carry it dammit. Too much cool gear.

    3x watching tis (like a lot of GIJB episodes) .. get the same feeling of “ man I wish I could hang out with these guys” ... I’ve been lucky to call upon them as friends.. While it’s awesome to see sooo many new people join... there is something special when the OGs put something out. Another home Run gentlemen and I think a much needed after all the amazing work in Blazing Sands...( which I think deserves BEST UA-cam series of year award - If such a thing exists)

      Also I piggy backed.. you showcased the 92 CC.. but I loved the 93 and featured that as my underrated CC figure

    • @gijoburg
      @gijoburg  5 років тому

      Yep, that all black CC is a stunner. And I can recall it’s use in the comicbooks I think; and the good ol artist trick of adding blue lo-lights to a black outfit to give it texture. So in that sense at least, it fit the mandate. Now I just need to track that figure down!
      And thanks for commenting on the informality of the vid. It was absolutely Rob and my intention to make this a callback to all the Sunday mornings spent sitting on the carpet, surrounded by toys and playing out little scenarios as we psyched ourselves up for a game.

    All of my vintage figures have that nice rust accent on the leg screws. It goes very nicely with the "Cobra Blue". Your real world photography is very refreshing, I'm sure you've never heard that. Cobra has pulled off blue and black better than anyone in fashion history.

    The SMG that comes with the night landing zodiac looks like an M3 sub machine gun. U.S. weapon made in WW2 that replaced the Thomson. Very reliable, and cost effective. It served into the 70s.

    I liked this Convergence of yours quite well. GOD JOB GUYS! Although, I will say this Steve...as per your feelings with the twins? I feels the same regarding the Cobra Viper. Nice one Marcus! Can’t go wrong with the classics; I’d go as far as to say just like Beatles vs Elvis you can like both the Viper and the Blueshirt... but you gotta love one just a little more than the other!

    • @gijoburg
      @gijoburg  5 років тому +1

      And the Twins never really had a defined function in my playtime. They were the commanders of a group that I had none of the figures of. And their very realistic function as financiers to Cobra was about as fun to a child as maths homework. I relegated them to Hammerhead drivers and managed to snap ALL of their kneeguards when pulling them out of the cockpits. Found a replacement set at a vintage store but still couldn’t find the love. Maybe one day I will...

    Surprisingly, yes! You need three or four to stop the legs from going limp at the waist, but you can get them cheap and they are more flexible then old o-rings which (at least in my case) become brittle or fall apart after a decade in an old box.

    Interesting on the Cobra Rattler, I have to agree it is a 10 out of 10. While watching blood in the water, when wild weasel took off in the Rattler to eliminate major blood and recondo I noticed during takeoff how easily the Rattlers landing gear retracted. I was going to ask how you had your Rattler setup... Now I know.

    • @gijoburg
      @gijoburg  5 років тому

      True. I have a lot more experience with a later release - the Joe Thunderbolt release from 1997 and touch wood the landing gear on that function well and are unbroken after many years of regular play. Maybe the mold was corrected? My brushings with the 25th A release suggest that too.

    I have to agree with Rob, the Hurricane deserves a 4 at the very best. The only thing that makes it desirable in my opinion is its overall look and Cobra pilot. You get the feeling of how Hasbro wanted to go so cheap to push this off on GI Joe fans, making it so much less than what it originally could have been. So Rob, I agree a four is generous.

    Great video! Just my opinion, but ‘Cobra blue’ is only the dark blue used throughout the original lineup of 80’s figures and vehicles. Any other shade of blue is just blue. And let’s be honest, you could have skipped all of the figures from the 90’s. That’s like watching the Titanic sink... 👍

    • @gijoburg
      @gijoburg  5 років тому

      I don’t mind translating my response, what is your mother tongue? I think the green versus blue was an important visual cue to set the good guys apart from the bad. Joe got practical military colours that worked for camouflage and realistic military equipment. Greens, tans, browns and grays. Cobra was futuristic and had all the passionate colours like red, blue, purple, black and bone-white. Thanks to such stark contrast, there will never be any doubt as to which faction a toy belongs to.
      Of course there were always one or two exceptions like a good guy who dressed in black or Cobra mountaineer who liked tan!

      Bloody genius! I’m totally gonna shock the Joe world with that insight every time I get the chance! Cheers!

      GI Joburg thank you, love your series btw. It’s the “closest thing we’ll ever see that’s like a new SunBow episode”..,
      (Is what I tell people when I’m trying to get them to actually sit through and pay attention to an episode!)

      Thanks Aaron. That is the very best kind of support we can ask for. I don’t care about views or subs; I just care that this stuff reaches the kind of audience who would appreciate it. To keep Joe vital and alive as an ongoing narrative and not just stuff to collect and place on a shelf. Thanks for spreading the word!

      GI Joe has the best community out of all the different fandoms out there keeping it alive, like SW fans were in the 90s. I really think the SW fans are going to really start dropping out en masse for various reasons in the next couple of years and just like in the 1980s, GI Joe is going to appear to “fill that void” with something fresh and fan driven/demanded. Just think of the different types of media that it could find it’s way into. People that don’t even collect physical toys, etc would go nuts for all the GI Joe/Cobra “skins” that could be available in video games.. I can think of so many things. They say “history repeats itself”. Let’s hope it happens.
      Yo Joburg!

    No televipers?

      They’d be in there if I owned any at the time! I give em a 6 out of 10. Bit plain jane for a Cobra and unlikely to be anyone’s favourite; but a useful support troop nonetheless!

    Giving the video 6 of 10. Would have been a solid 9, but the lack of shoes or socks dropped the score.
