OH MY GOODNESS!!! Thank you for never taking this video down. 9 years later you saved me. I have spent the last few days wondering what I was doing wrong. I wasn't clicking hard enough and not waiting for the special 'click.' You kind of have to feel it:)! New subscriber!
I was about to throw my new pilot 4+1 pen in the trash bc I couldn’t get the lead to advance so I truly thank you for making this video. It was indeed very helpful.
Thank you. I had the same issue, but it only took 4 clicks to advance the lead because I tipped it nib down which did a better job of advancing the lead.
Oh my gosh! I thought mine was broken!!! Thank you! I was shaking it, tapping it on the paper, started pulling it apart (then didn't!), so glad I just asked Google!
Thank you SO MUCH! Your video is the FIRST I've found that really explains why I could not get my lead to advance!! This is July and it's sat in my holder since I purchased in May! I didn't know about the 2 HARD CLICKS! Now it works!
Thank you so much for this video. I was getting frustrated because I had no idea how to get the lead to advance. I wasn't pressing hard enough. Thanks again!!! So helpful!!
Indeed! 20+ clicks is unexpected. I quit using the pencil part b/c I couldn't make it work. Thanks for posting! I kinda think the design-insides could be improved.
Kimberly, I think part of the problem here is that most mechanical pencil clutches are gravity feed mechanisms. I don't have a Pilot 4+1, but I wouldn't expect it to feed very easily unless the lead sleeve was oriented tip down when you click. My guess (unless I'm crazy here), is that you would get the lead to feed on far fewer clicks if you knocked it tip down. PS-I just ordered a Coleto setup from you and I will eventually showcase it on my Channel!
My wife and I recently purchased two Dr. Grip Pilot 4+1 mechanical pencil. Throughout our extended lives, we have used quite a few different multi-pens yet, the Dr. Grip Pilot 4+1 mechanical pencil is only the second one with a pencil cartridge. The first one purchased many years prior was so poorly made that we shied away from any others with that feature until now. It was the quality of the Pilot Dr. Grip Gel pens which we also have recently purchased and enjoyed immensely that indicated it might be time for us to try another multi-pen with a pencil included. As to the quality of the 4+1, the pen feels solid and so far writes smoothly. The red ink smeared a little bit, however, I may have been in a hurry while testing the pen. Only time will tell how they will hold up in the long run. We did feel a little inconvenience was the lack of English on the package, though they did have a drawing showing what I believed to be the loading of the pencil cartridge. That is the reason I am on UA-cam tonight, I knew there had to be a video about this pen somewhere to help reinforce my speculation about loading the led. We appreciate your time in making this flick. At least I know loading the pencil cartridge will be basically the same as with many other mechanical pencils. Thanks again.
Greetings from Borneo. I have been trying for the past 15 minutes. Then I somehow click on your video. I need 6 clicks for it to appear. The key like you say is to press it HARD. Talk about coincidence. I just typed Dr Grip 4 1 and click without looking after watching your video on the pilot dr grip. Thanks a million.
Thank you! I have a similar model and I wasn’t pushing until the second click. Although for me a new piece came out after just a couple of firm clicks. Really appreciate this video 😊
Thank you. It was very helpful and informative. I found out that there was 2 extra 0.5 mm lead inside the tube. I wasn't pressing enough to let it come out. Now it's working.
TY! I was stumped until I viewed your video tip on youtube - Now the pencil lead advances- Amazing!!! Dr Grip 4+1 is a beautiful pen - this saved me a store return!
Thank you for this. I just got mine and thought it had no lead or didn't work. Now I'm happy. Arthritis so wanted to try this pen 4 plus one before ordering another. Definitely will get a second for those just in case you can't find it. Great video and definitely need as no direction in English on mine.
Thank you so much! I could not figure this out and assumed there was no lead in there but then it looked like there was and I couldn't get any lead in. Problem solved. Thanks! Super helpful!
I love this pen, needed to know how to add lead...but watching the clicking was rough, I think gravity would help! Mine hasn't had any issues with the lead coming out
Thank for your sharing.Because of ,I bought a new this pen . But , I pop up the pencil ,the lead don't come out . I watch your video , I push the hook pass through the point about 21,22 times ,the lead come out ,my pen is OK now ,thank you.
So my pencil broke (think my kid dropped it) so the Lead no longer advances. I got the $30 WOOD 4+1 so it would be a shame to not be able to replace the pencil, and I can't seem to find it anywhere...
I was so irritated that I couldn’t get lead out and almost tossed my pen also as another person wrote. This is not a strange video, but very helpful! Thank you, thank you, thank you! 🤗
hey, my wife recently bought a pilot wood 4+1 from a pen shop in Japan. Is this pen exclusive to Japan? Im looking to get refills and wondering if this is the only place to get them
I have a problem to read your letters "G" which lookm more like "Y" to me, will you please try to write the G like G?, by the way I always watch your videos specially the 1.6 mm bic ones, I think your handwriting is beautiful, congratulations.
8 years on and still saving lives with your video... I never even thought to click harder.

the pencil lead will come out in 2+ clicks **ALWAYS** if the pen is pointed down. its called gravity.
I just received my 4+1 pen and I love it. Thanks for the help with the lead mechanics. You did a great job!
Oh my gosh! I thought mine was broken!!! Thank you! I was shaking it, tapping it on the paper, started pulling it apart (then didn't!), so glad I just asked Google!

hey, my wife recently bought a pilot wood 4+1 from a pen shop in Japan. Is this pen exclusive to Japan? Im looking to get refills and wondering if this is the only place to get them
Thanks so much for sharing!!
Hi. Is it possible to remove the mechanical pencil slot and replace it with another color pen refill to make it 5 colors?
Thank you! I thought mine didn’t work.
Thank you!
Thank you sooooo much! I was freaking out because I couldn't get the lead out
Thank you!!!! ❤❤❤
Thank you for sharing
I really loved the way you removed that tip
Wow!!! Thanks.
Thanks I appreciate it
I have a problem to read your letters "G" which lookm more like "Y" to me, will you please try to write the G like G?, by the way I always watch your videos specially the 1.6 mm bic ones, I think your handwriting is beautiful, congratulations.
You mean like this "g"?
My 0.5mm lead came out in 2 hard clicks as long as I held the pen down vertically as if writing ✍️
Mine came preloaded. Two hard clicks and my lead advanced out.
that's why i got rid of my pencil unit and just put another color in it's place...too frustrating!!
Thanks
thank you
You need a full length piece of lead to get going at 2 clicks.
Is it refillable?
Yes, absolutely!
I think so many clicks was due to orientation of the pencil. if the tip was downwards, gravity would have quickened the process.
Asad the great not true
Gravity!
me rn: 🤯
Very helpful! Thank you!
Thank you!
