    Yamaha used the full might of their Research and Development department to build a Harley type cruiser.
    After many years of trying, they gave up, because they couldn't make it inefficient enough!

    • @geraldscott9446

      I'm willing to give up some reliability if the bike is fun. I've never had a Japanese bike (and I've had about 40) that I would really call fun. Harleys and vintage British bikes, long stroke singles and 360 degree parallel twins are fun. The new Triumphs just don't have the feel and sound of the old ones. In addition to a Harley, I also have a Royal Enfield. Possibly the least reliable mass produced bike ever made. But it sure is fun. It lets you know in no uncertain terms that there is an internal combustion engine down there.

      @FasterThanSoup 6 років тому +2

      +- The illestrator - Exclusive? Meh. When you have retail outlet stores in Germany, Japan, UK, etc. that sell more shirts and accessories than motorbikes that word takes on a slightly different meaning. It's all about a perceived lifestyle and/or image at that point.
      As for heritage, a lot of these Japanese companies have been around long enough now, proven their engineering, and won the races to have that word be used in their favour too.
      Style may be a different matter as they are always accused of copying. On the other hand, they do copy what sells the most - sound business plan. I've been to Japan enough times to know they've got styles of their own that simply don't sell in most Western markets, but are still cool. All in the eye of the beholder.
      Speaking of copying, I was hoping the CB1100 would start a new UJM wave for the twenty first century. Maybe it's a delayed reaction, but now I'm excited that the Z900RS is around the corner. I know the CB didn't sell well in NA, but I'm glad enough Asian and European markets bought enough to hopefully make that wave surge stronger. UJM tsunami? Too soon?

    • @Teatimeted
      @Teatimeted 6 років тому

      What I find interesting is despite the fact that this is a video about Japanese motorcycles, and to my knowledge Harley-Davidson was not mentioned once in either part one or part two of this video, people are still talking about, and commenting on the Harley-Davidson brand. That's some serious mental market share.

  • @TD402dd

    I owned a 175cc Yamaha enduro set up for long runs in the dirt (Expansion chamber with spark arrestor, plastic 4 gallon tank, plastic 2-cycle oil in the rear bag which was quite small with a crummy light on the bottom, knobby tires, plastic grips, front fender extender, etc.). It never broke and always brought me home or to camp. I moved to the road with a Yammie RD400 with twin high rise expansion chambers, dual disc, front and rear mag wheels. That thing almost killed me with most uncontrolled acceleration I've ever had. Military, Wife, Kids, and back on the road with a Triumph Sprint RS tricked out as much as I knew how. The Triumphs are as close to Japanese bikes as you can get without buying Nippon. 12 years later I returned to Yamaha my little R3 with about everything I could change including the tyres and pipe. I'm not sure what soul is, but making me happy through the years is all I could ask, and I was never left on the side of the road with any of these bikes. To me soul is a poorly engineered bike that sounds too loud, too uncomfortable to ride more than a hundred miles, or if it's Italian it leaks oil, breaks down, cost a fortune, sounds stupid with the dry clutch when a three cylinder sounds so much better than a V-twin. Give me Nippon with something that makes me glad to ride 400 miles and is reasonably priced.

    You're right. Japan produces the best vehicles. I have a BMW R1200C and I'll never own another bike other than Japanese. ALl I've owned is Japanese bikes before it. 7 Japanese bikes. Don't get me wrong, I "like" the R1200C. It's a nice bike. A good bike, even. But... The engine uses dated lead main bearings, whereas Japanese engines, all of them, use ball bearings. Parts for my R1200C are insane. INSANE. $100 for the piston in the front brake master cylinder. ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS. I spent $30 on the Aprilia brake rebuild kit, which includes the piston, all seals, all orings, all rubber, all springs, literally everything, but BMW wants $100 for JUST the piston. It is the EXACT SAME KIT because both are made by Maguera!!!
    (And yeah, the 13MM Aprilia master cylinder rebuild kit worked perfectly with my BMW master cylinder for 70 dollars less and I got ALL of the seals and springs and clips with it! With BMW you JUST get the metal piston rod, and for a hundred bucks!!! NOPE!!!)
    BMW is just greedy. Fit and finish on the German bike is about two generations BEHIND what Japan is producing. Sorry! But it's true! I've been working on bikes for 20+ years!
    BMW wanted $300 for the hoses INSIDE the fuel tank. I got them on Amazon for $40. Japan wouldn't put out a bike that even NEEDS hoses on the inside of the tank. That's... ridiculous on a motorcycle.
    And if they did... It wouldn't be $300 for them for a 10 year old bike.
    With Germans it is about pride, with Japan, it is about honor. That same part on a brand new Japanese bike is going to be 1/5 that price. Plus they're great bikes. Japan almost never releases a vehicle that is unreliable. You literally, cannot go wrong getting a Japanese bike. My good friend's Harley is built like something cobbled together with parts bought almost entirely from ACE hardware. It has all the manners of a... tractor.
    For the rest of my life, unless it is something rare or special, I don't think I will ever stray from buying Japanese. You just cannot go wrong, as far as design, durability, and economy are concerned. You just get the entire package with a Japanese bike. You get it all. Precision engineering, power, handling, longevity, ease of maintenance, cheap parts, and cheap price. (Comparatively)

    • @Theillestrator1050
      @Theillestrator1050  6 років тому

      Would you say BMW is doing better in that regard with modern bikes like the S1000R for example?

    • @davewolf8869
      @davewolf8869 6 років тому +1

      - The illestrator - honestly. Yes. I do. But is the fuel pump gonna cost you seven hundred dollars? Yep. Just because the quality and durability have increased does not mean the greed and inflated prices have dropped. Just the opposite, probably. Which is why I'll always buy from the land of the rising sun.

      Hawg Hunter I don't really hate them either. But they will always have people buying them no matter what. So there's no incentive to improve whatsoever. Even BMW is making engines other than the boxer. When was the last time you saw HD put out anything other than a v twin... Please, we are capable of so much more as Americans. The types of engines produced by Japan are endless... From v3s to singles to sixes.

      Dave Boothney totally agree. name something else you upgrade to the latest model and you want it to be the same as the old one? Computers, phones, tevelvisons, hell, even washing machines. I just realised something when i saw those oval shaped pistons. Aren't those v8s or v12s pistons useless since some of the pistons fire at the same time? Meaning, they could just use a bigger cylinder instead of two pistons firing at the same time?

    Honda was the company that decided to smoke some ganja and decide to design engines, and whenever they did they are f****** amazing! So confusing to look at as a mechanic and try to figure out how the hell did that actually work. But hey they work wonderfully! Lol who would actually use a wax element to control an automatic choke? Honda. Wax really? Like they were just puffing on a joint and picking at his ears and hey what type of wax can I put on an engine and make it work? Hey let's try and put it on a carburetor. Jeez it works!

      have a look at the power valve arrangement on the SUZUKI RGV 250 N....it's kinda different to the HONDA NSR 250 version..I wonder how much opium those old bastards smoked when they thunk that shit up...the RGV ones always got clunky and even FELL into the cylinder a little bit ! but when they went, man did they GO !...also the RGV piston skirts were coated with Teflon....and the cylinder liner was that super duper hard Nitride stuff ....heaps and heaps of race track technology went into those pocket rockets, they were so much fun to ride, especially running against the big sports bikes and the twisties !

      Let's not gloss over their abject failures though. The chocolate cams in the VF750F. The cracking RFVC heads (yeah, off-road but still). The overheating rear cylinders on the V3 MVX250s. Then when it seems they poached the idiot that used to design Suzuki electrics in the 80s for themselves in the 90s.

    i Dont know what others saying...to me sportsbike gave me TONS of soul i remember riding the zx10r first time in my life on the freeway i overtooked a car without even trying i realized i was going 220kmh its crazy and the sound its like iam on a rocket or a formula 1 car and it was only Quarter of the throttle so i decide to twist it very slowly and GOD it pulls like hell i was barely hanging so i tucked in and focus in the view it was like iam in a time warp its OUT of this world totally different feeling and after set and done i stopped at a gas station my legs trembling my hands shaking eyes watery i was too happy i cried ive never felt soo different before thats when i realized There is more in life we gotta try then i started thinking about safety its dengerous to go fast soo i sort of appreciate life even more ever since..
    then they next week i test ride my friends cruiser i was like dafuq is this? its loud it has bigger engine but...thats it? i was cringing thinking about "why" was this nice even when its slow?... long story short all the bikes has their own unique feeling to it its all about what you LOVE

    Hey,
    I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.
    You mention that the pipes on your bike made a chattering, clattering sound when you decelerate. I had a similar issue when I installed Leo Vince cans on my Honda Super Hawk 996cc DOHC L-Twin. It would sound like someone was playing castanets when I decelerated. It was a shame because otherwise the cans made a lovely sound. I learned on a forum that it was the spigot type outlet on the cans makes that noise. The fix I'm told is to put cone type outlets on the cans instead of the spigot type.I noticed that your cans have the same type of outlet on them. FYI if interested.

    I recently studied the engineers' review for the current Honda CB1100 ... the attention to detail was incredible: the design of the spokes, the instrument cluster, even the cooling fins were redesigned to give the characteristic cooling-down contraction noises as was the case with the original bike in the 70s. No, I would rather have a reliable bike with no "soul" than to spend a fortune on servicing and repairs, and never know if a day out will result in a breakdown.

      Sick? Sick is bad not good, The KH500 WAS 62 BHP,BUT UNRELIABLE THE CENTRE POT HAD INADEQUATE COOLING AND LUBRICATION WHICH WAS ONLY A PRE MIX NOT FORCED LUBRICATION LEADING TO PREMATURE FAILURE OF RINGS AND SMALL ENDS,BUT BRAND NEW WHEELIE IN THE FIRST THREE GEARS 0-60 IN 5 SECONDS AND A TOP SPEED OF 120MPH, I SETTLED FOR THE MORE RELIABLE BUT LESS POWERFUL SUZUKI GT550 0-60 IN 7 SECONDS AND 110MPH BUT WITH THE FORCED LUBRICATION FED BY PLASTIC PIPES ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE ENGINE AND NO PREMATURE FAILURE, WHAT'S A OILER INJECTOR CAM ON A TWO STROKE?

  • @shaunelliott3759
    @shaunelliott3759 6 років тому

    I absolutely adored 2 strokes, i miss them so much. I had the full set of Suzuki GT's, all 6 at one time (little me on the 750 kettle, when I stopped at the lights, i had to put my foot on the car next to me) and a shit load of RD's, they were beautiful, as for soul, they had it in spades. When I got ill I had to sell my heavy bikes and kickstart only, at one point I though I would never ride again. I caried on building but it was stuff that I couldn't ride, it was all the old British bikes like I had sold. Then someone brought me an FZR600 1991 3HE, it was small, well balanced, quite light, and an electric start. At one time I would have told him to take his shite somewhere else, but when it was done I had a little ride, then a bigger one, then an even bigger one, and i was smitten. I now have 4 motorcycles, and i ride them as often as I can. As for Japanese bikes having no soul, they gave me mine back, and i would happily share it with them. I must say that I wish I had my old bikes back, they go for a fuckin fortune now.

    I tell you what, coming from big cruisers to an FZ6, I think i'll only go back when i retire. My FZ6 is only a 600cc and less powerful than an R6. But i get some guy on a naked Harley with a tuned and cam built 110ci motor and they don't stand a chance. The soul of a sport (sport touring in my case) is they are eager. You get the revs about 10k and they come alive with fury. Eager to run and play like a 4mo puppy. And it's the refinement. Suspension, balanced. Brakes, slams your helmet into the back of your head and your jacket rides up. Acceleration, unmatched but refined and in the case of my FZ6, incredibly amazing. Not because it's fast. But because smooth and incredibly tame below 6,000, mild between 6,000-10,000, and pulling the front wheel off the ground in 1st and 2nd between 10,000-14,000. It's literally 3 bikes in one. Tame 500cc, then a mild FZ6R, then a bike that'll give an R6 a run for its money. Here's the voodoo/ refinement, Yamaha designed the motor to have good power from 1,000-14,000rpm without VTEC. Most other bikes were peaky in their power band. This thing, the whole rev range is power.
