- Trying to figure out what you should plant in your food plots can be an information nightmare. It's like drinking from a fire hydrant. You'll read about one, then someone says another on is better, and then someone gives you contradictory information so you just go back and forth. Honestly all three are great options in the right settings. So in this video we are going over three of the most common, plus a brief mention of triticale, and where they're best suited.

Do yourself a favor and drop rye and replace it with triticale. The I’ve seen deer walk right past winter wheat fields and rye fields and go straight to the triticale. I wish I was joking. All the fields were fertilized by the same guy in western Oklahoma. He’s a friend that has been spraying fertilizer for decades and it’s all he’ll plant for his food plots now because it draws the deer for miles to his fields even when they have wheat and rye close to their area. Kinda strange but we did the same thing on our farm, smaller plot is triticale, the larger one is winter wheat. They hit both but definitely prefer the winter wheat.
I planted a mixture of rye/wheat/oats last year and it worked out well. Rye can help for poults and fawns the following year but the deer seem to prefer the wheat and oats.
It’s been a long time, but there was research looking into Cereal Rye as a plant that helped balance the pH within a deer’s guy. So it may have nutritional benefits that don’t show in obvious macro nutrients.
It also has benefits for soil improvements and weed control.
Zone 4, Central Wisconsin, I mix FORAGE Oats, FORAGE
Winter Wheat, and will be adding Winter Barley this next August. Layer Winter Rye 3-4 weeks later if needed.
Never tried barley. Winter rye is good for filling in those bare spots too.
I use all 4 types at some point. Lowest ph, poor soil, low carbon content I go with rye. Great ph I go with wheat, decent ph I go with oats. Then I throw triticale in the mix for diversity. I have seen deer smash oats in a plot early, then the wheat, and then rye at the end of season. We have a long season Oct 25-Feb 10 so it is easy to see how they transition. Great content.
Rye is like Anna Kournikova. Looks good but never wins
I just plant Mary Jane. Its like cocaine for deer. 😂
That was my thought too. Why not mix 2 or 3. I have used cereal rye in my plots with clover for 3 years. The plots don’t seem to be used as much this season. One in particular. It was almost 100% clover. I top dressed rye and am not getting the usage I was expecting. I guess I should try wheat or oats next season. See if the sightings and usage go up.
It’s always a good idea to do some testing. What works in one area may not work in yours.
There is an awnless variety of Rye also that the deer will eat the seed heads.
I’ll have to look in to that. Thanks!
Could I plant any of these and it produce without lime?
Yes you can. I’d go with with wheat or rye.
Why pick? Plant the correct varieties of all 3. More diversity is always better.
Very good point!
U act like rye cereal grain is trash! U don’t know wt ur talking about! Cereal rye and rye grass are 2 different things! Winter rye is more palatable as wheat
