I live in northern Wisconsin and had an old dear friend. She told me that the best time to plant rutabaga where I live is the 4th of July. I tried it several years ago and it worked out great.
Thanks for the info I’m planting my first food plot this year and was planning on planting this weekend. Thanks for the info I’ll be waiting until around September
That's timely information Dave appreciate it opens forbo September 15th in South Carolina so it makes the planting question tough saving Graces we're open till January 1st
Here im planning on getting my fall plots in before july 4th, have had 3 failed fall plots in a row when the rain decided to stop after july 4th. Also in northern ND 30 minutes from Canada
Knowing that you are in PA, what are your thoughts on planting a grain mix next week? It's earlier than I would typically look to get it in the ground, but the rain forecast looks like it's shaping up to be great
Thanks for info. Live in upstate New York looks like August 15 is a good date I think I planted too early last year great food plot deer pounded it but waiting an extra few weeks to mid August sounds much better
I’m in southeast ky I planted one acre of brassica mix, and half acre fall forage mix, oats, peas, wheat, and rye on opposite sides of plot On sept 14th, yes 10 days after our season came in. I Like to plant late august to Labor Day weekend. Had to plant late due to hay harvest this year. And the hurricane coming through dumping a week of rain, on us. Over the Labor Day timeframe. But that puts all fall forage being young throughout our bow season, It also put me exactly 60 days from open rifle day, 45 days from our usually first average frost date, ph was 7.5 on soil test so we’ll see how it does. Hitting the brassica side with 75 lbs of liquid 46-0-0 In the 4th week of growing stage. It will give me another. 3/4 weeks of growing before we will def have frost. I don’t usually rifle hunt at all. I stay out that whole timeframe, and keep pressure down. Makes for great late season hunts. I don’t ever hunt the plots without perfect wind. If I hunt rifle it’s about 600-800 yards away from my plots with a bow in the timber areas.
In South Texas, 60 days before the first frost, the archery season is in its second week. When would be the best time to bring the tractor and disc around and stir things up?
@@sascotttx5145 yes. In the south it’s a a different story. I was mainly referring to the north, northeast and Midwest areas. In those warmer southern states a different blend would be recommended. I would plant before the season such as beans, peas or oats.
I planted some rock n clay peas they were doing great. We had a lot of rain in central pa. One week later the peas are turning yellow. Your suggestions please.
Could be a lot of stuff it’s definitely from to much water in that case which probably wiped out the nitrogen or potassium in the soil. Could also be a zinc deficiency. Usually once they turn yellow there’s no turning back. You can try adding some triple 19 to them when leaves are dry see if fish helps
I also keep hearing of guys planting food plots in July. I cant figure that out. We have some very hot weather and it is always dry in September. I dont plant until Labor Day. Also, the 60 day maturity means that the plants are mature and not as palatable as when young. Brassicas get damaged by flea beetles in hot weather. Grains and brassicas grow better in september, when nights are starting to get cool. Good points in this video
I live in Iowa and I have 2.5 acre food plot down in a valley that’s very hard to bow hunt over because of the wind. So I was think of planting something that would be good for late season so I can hunt further from it with a muzzleloader. Is there something you would recommend planting? Should I sections it off and plant multiple blends for more diversity?
Well good to know,my bridge should be done this week .Now to bulldoze, put blind up ,spread lime, fertilizer and a closet full of seed.Probably not going to use my buckwheat, but I feel better about still having time.
What is your recommendation to plant for a late season plot. I live in Upstate NY and I’m looking to keep deer coming in November/December when the other food sources such as corn fields start to lose there attraction. With that being said can you throw multiple different seeds down to cover the earlier months as well as late season. Say clover for archery season and then something else that’ll keep them coming during gun season.
@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors I have one other question please, on a 1st time food plot, do I put the lime at same time I put the fertilizer and plant seed? Are do I put the lime before?

I hunt two areas of Georgia. Middle Georgia I plant the end of August or first of September according to rain. Deep south Georgia I planted brassica the last week of September to first week of October same with rain. Its so hot down there they just can make it until later.
@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors just gotta try and be in a rain window. And I had food all the way through season. The farmer who leases from us tilled the bulbs back in. I'm happy he's happy for the free fertilizer. And the deer are happier.

Its a crap shoot here. This year like a lot of them, its very dry now with no rain in sight. First frost can come by the end of August. Middle of Sept. for sure. I usually plant around the last week of August rain or not. Much later then that and its too late to do much good for this coming season. Winter Rye helps save the day if anything will.
Yea for sure just have to base it off the weather and not the seed labels. Just all depends on where your located but following the 45-60 dat range usually is best bet. Wheat works as well as rye:
Yes all those are annuals. If you plant in fall they will get 4-5 inches tall and go dormant through the winter and come back in spring to create a seed head. You can let that go until fall or you can mow and kill once it gets a seed head.
That’s right. Wherever that lands on the calendar. I should of mentioned I was referring to certain areas where guys are planting early to mid July when they don’t have a frost until end of October lol.
The issue I run into is how do I hunt over a plot during bow season on September 11 when I can't plant till mid to late September in GA? Is it best just to let the spring plot " buckwheat mostly" stay until the fall planting?
Yes sir it's a tough one I'm in upstate South Carolina September 15th is the opener of bow what to plant is a real trick we get two weeks before the gun start banging I hunt all season with my bow anyways but it makes it tough
I hope we get some rain in missouri it’s been 2 weeks and no rain in the forecast for 3 more weeks. Was hoping I could get them planted before the end of July but that may not happen
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors doesn't make sense. Ok your sells slump in July and Aug. So you posy a video claimingnits the best time to plant. Which in turn boost your sells. Unless your in the far north where mid July is about right.
Yes wherever the 45-60 day mark lands before a frost!
Have you done much planting or anything in Texas? Or South Oklahoma? I’ve tried two food plots and haven’t had any luck.
I personally haven’t planted there no but I have some friends that live there and plant all the time. What did you plant and when?
do you think i should plant clover during september then winter wheat later or at the same time?
Yes sir I would plant it all at the same time I’ve done that many times.
when you don't know my frost date how can you tell me not to worry about it.Central Illinois ion?
Need to find my frost date to know when to plant.
If I plant food plot in March or April in north Ga will it still be good for hunting season. Wheat, forage oats, turnips, annual clover.
That is not a good mixture for planting in march or April that would be a fall blend that you should plant mid to end of September

Winter wheat is king. I would do 200 lbs an acre plant 45-60 days before frost. That is very attractive all season
