  • This 1990 Speed Queen washer worked flawlessly until one of the belts starting smoking, and snapped. Investigation revealed a seized water pump--a part that is no longer made. I was able to find a used one on eBay and replace it. It took two tries, but you see the results.
There is a noisy idler pulley which is going to be replaced, we're trying to get 10 extra years out of this 34 year old machine...that gets used 3-5 times per day most weekdays.
Will be interesting to see how long it lasts!
Do you have a vintage washing machine that is still in daily use? Tell me about it in the comments!

Thanks, especially for part numbers and alert that pump was discontinued (it used to cost only about $46). My machine looks like yours except that it says "Commercial Heavy Duty Washer" instead of "Marathon". I bought it for $440 in 1990 (approx. $1060 in 2023 dollars). Mine first failed by the machine jamming, then repeatedly shutting down due to overheat protection. I was going to get a new machine but another video showed me front panel removal, and playing with it led to "screaming", smoke and belt breakage as you had. I then found your video. Your supplier was out of used pumps but I found a new one on Ebay for $175 (expensive, but less than the $300 that some are charging) and got that and the pump belt. It's now working again. It's arguably disappointing that it "only lasted 34 years" because, living alone, I only use it about once a week. I note that my original pump had its front screws about in the middle of the slots while in your video you put them in the loosest position and my new ones are a bit tighter than that so you can see a little of the slots to the right. My theory is that the original belt was too tight and so it "only" lasted 34 years. I'll have to see if the new one is still working in 34 years; I was 34 in 1990, am 68 now and will be 102 in 2058!

Interesting story! Glad you got your old machine working again! You could be right about the belt being too tight. I guess I figured that after that many years, a plastic part (though heavy duty) is bound to fail. I do wonder if a cheaper pump could be modified to fit these units. If the current one goes out and I'm not able to affordably replace it, I may try!

Neat video. I've always wondered what these earlier speed queen "marathon" washing machine's innards look like. Thanks!

I don't know much about them, but from what I read I think they were only made for a few years. I think before Alliance bought Speed Queen. If I get a chance, I might open up the dryer (probably needs cleaned) to show what it looks like inside.

This is a Raytheon built SQ. Raytheon bought SQ from MaGraw Edison back in 1980. These are the same machines you’ll find in Laundromats as Speed Queen has always sold to the public.
Prior to 1980 Speed Queen was a solid tub commercial washer also used in Laundromats.
Alliance has since modified the drive assembly and updated other things, but all in all these machines have essentially been on the same platform since 1980.

Thanks for the info! I think I do remember reading about Raytheon, now that you mention it.

Great job! Well, worth repairing these are workhorse machines you should get many many more years out of them, with a little care.

great job, just add a few drops of Zoom Spout oil to the idler pulley, it will take care of that noise

I just made a video about this. It was a lube issue but also the bolt was a bit loose AND the metal bushing in the pulley had started working its way out. @@Sauls2286

With laundry detergent and fabric softener please on the heaviest normal cycle. Fabric softener doesn't ruin your washer when used properly according to the recommended amount. It goes in the final deep rinse.@@Sauls2286

I do think speed queen has inspiration from Maytag. its very identical to Maytag

Are you talking about that specific pump? If so, I'd love to get the Maytag part number as a backup!
