Excellent video. I actually figured this out on my own golfing on my simulator in the garage. I didn't realize how disconnected my swing got when I tried to swing more right of target. This actually cause me to slice the ball horribly when I tried to swing hard. Great work!
Chris you are the man. Each time I have a problem, I come to watch your videos and surely there is something there to fix me. Sure wish I could take a lesson with you in person. Thank you
excellent instruction on a very common problem for club golfers - emphasis on "aiming" the strike at the inside-aft quadrant of the ball introduces this hand-path problem, and many other problems too!
Just tried this and what a GREAT way to FLIGHT THE BALL! My problem has always been a ball flight that's too high. Now, it's REALLY a lot lower and more penetrating. Thanks AGAIN CHRIS for expert advice!
Fantastic stuff, love the lessons. I agree with Cace, i to have always been told to swing to the right and hand path also follows that direction. This clears up so many issues, thank you Chris.
so key! the understanding that the hands are moving up and left while the clubhead (lagging behind) is going right at impact is so important. beautiful. thank you! the teachers that teach "dropping the hands" and "swing right" cause so much harm to golfers trying to learn. i know!
A Great video! This video made me understand the lead arm movement through impact. I have been on the right track but that "up and in" feeling was the missing move. Now I can strike the ball with "authority" and more consistently. This idea made my impact soooo much better... Thank you, Chris! Thumbs up to other videos also, lots of great tips how to improve your game...
Great video! The swing to right field thought has made the last 2 years a mess, some good rounds but many bad rounds. As soon as I realized what my hands should be doing 'exiting left' everything changed.
Same...I started just swinging left to stop my blocks and hooks, i figured I was bandaiding something and coming over the top cause it felt like such a slice swing or a bad pull...no actually it tbh, I use to close my face soooooo much to get it to not go right but I kept thinking oh shit must be swinging left still when it went left/overdraw
Thanks for this Chris, after failing to drop my handicap of 16 any further, my coach has decided that we are going back to basics this winter and the first thing we are working on is getting my hands to move left after impact. This video shows my exactly WHY!!! Thank You.
Had a go at this last night on the range and then during league play that same night. Went from fades/slice to hooks and I never, ever hit hooks. Great video explaining this Chris! Made a world of difference with all the clubs in my bag
Hi Chris, I’m a member of your current club and have seen you around quite a bit, also been a subscriber for a while. I’ve watched a lot of golf videos over the years but I’ve never been more excited to get to the range as I have since watching this video. I’m currently completely out of form. Although I play off 8 and have been working on hitting both ways on command, I noticed that lately when I go to draw it I’ve been getting heel strikes / shanks / weak push fades yet when I try to cut it, the results are slightly better and I now BELIEVE that THIS is the reason why. I’m going to book a lesson immediately. so we can get on trackman and hopefully drill this hand path up and left thing into my swing. Regards Lewis
This is so well done! I've always heard that you should "swing toward right field" and my hands have tended to follow that direction. My miss is a block fade where I make contact on the heel side of the club face. Seeing you visualize this really puts this into much better perspective.
Chris...your demonstration and explanation are superb!!! I have struggled with knowing exactly how to hit a draw and can now do so on command!!! Understanding the role of the hands is a must! Hit some balls in the yard this morning with a 9 iron and I was super excited the ball flew with a slight draw every time. Thanks for your excellent videos!!! I have now subscribed and am looking forward to seeing all of them.
I have never been taught this before but, your explanation and demonstrations made perfect sense to me. I tried those pitch shots this evening at the range and your tip worked great. Thank you Mr. Ryan from Houston, Texas!
I think I'm finally figuring this out. I also thought as a draw you needed to push out to the right. From watching other videos this is what is said they didn't mention anything about hand path. Makes sense when you try it due to the face looking much more square at impact. I am going to work on this as a 10 Handicap I would like to get lower and would like to learn how to shape both shot shapes to make me more versatile! Cheers Chris.
Been looking for a video about movement of the hands through impact for two years. Also asked at least 7 pros but no one explained it like this. Just got my swing back. Thanks
Made total sense of my swing fault. Couldn't figure out when using impact tape why most of my hits were low and in the heel but not particularly off target. Can't wait to go fix this down the range - many thanks, Chris.
Hi Chris, Another of your excellent teaching videos! Thank you. I struggle with right shoulder dominance on the downswing-this corrects that immediately. One question please-should this hand path apply with the driver (realizing set up/spine angle differs from irons)?
Thanks for your video. It was the missing piece on my swing. I was squaring up my club face with an anti slice concept where I swung my upper body to the left, not releasing my clubhead with my hands, and hitting a pull block. I got good distance with my driver but my irons went straight but weak and short of the target. I now understand that the only way I can release the club head with my hands to get solid power is to pull on the grip and hands with my hands at the top of the forward swing, and to swing my hands on an arc that is related to the arc created by the arm shoulder socket and that the grip and hands need to go along an arc that moves to the left of the target and about belt high as a general target area and that when the grip and my hands begin moving up and left that my hands are now in a position and only in ;that postion that I am able to release the club properly and therefore I will not longer block or flip the clubhead or hands. Thus your video has taught how to properly develop good lag properly that at the same time promotes proper realease of the clubhead because the hands and grips move on a proper arc up and left of the target and then the clubhead releases with a proper divot. I imagine that now that I have watched your video I will require some work on the timing of hands and grip as travel on the first half of the down swing. I will watch your video to try to learn about the timing of my arms. I imagine I last time I played a round I was squaring up the clubface too much with my body and not enough with my arms hands and grip. I am now imagining that the arms and hand lag initially but almost catch up by impact and then after impact I imagine my club hands and arms catching up sometime after impact. By generating proper lag from watching your video and releasing the club and not blocking the hands grip and club head reach a higher speed and thus they catch up with the body right after impact, and thus changes the timing of everything to some good common sense degree. I guess what I am saying that I was doing an antislice concept swing and I my arms where lagging to far behind and then I squared up the club face with my body, but my arms where not in an ideal location. After watching your video I see that I need to initially pull the grip handle on an arc and let my arms catch up with my body some so that I get proper lag and release my hands as my hands travel up and left so that my upper body, lower body, hands arms and club are all in the correct position relative to each other when I reach the just after impact position. I guess what I am saying is that I was letting my hands and club move away from my body in the impact zone and what I need to do is keep my hands close to my body during impact with proper lag and relative body position where I release my hands right before impact and that my hands should stay close to my body until after impact in which case I can allow my hands and club get further away from my body but not until after impact and I can imagine my body and arms to be pointing towards the target or just left of the target after impact when my hands and club are about waist high or a little higher. Your video might possibly lower my handicap by 10 to 20 strokes even if my short game remains average. I think we have all experimented with pushing the grip back on the back swing and pulling the grip down on the down swing and we all have got the feeling that this was the simplest most efficient way to develop club head speed but we failed because we let our hands get further away from our body in the impact area. Now by watching the video here we are watching, the author makes it clear how to complete the swing in the impact zone and in the area just after the impact zone. Some might think that this is a left lead sided swing, and this might be a valid point, but I suspect with some practice I can learn how to apply some power with my right side. Either way I like the feel of pushing the club back with the grip, and pulling club down with the grip, and now after watching the video I know where to pull the grip when I get to the impact zone and the zone right after impact. Thanks alot to the author, great video, the missing part of my swing. I think the flaw in pointing out that this is a left lead powered swing, the flaw is that this method the author discuss in this video teaches us how the maximize the force delivered by the right trail hand immediately before impact between the clubhead and the ball, The position the author teaches of the body, the club and the hands right before during and right after impact makes the release of the club head makes power from the right hand releasing the club head easy and natural and powerful and repeatable and consistently on plane in the impact area.
this is probably the best golf tip that ive heard, everithing changes, start scoring one digit handicap, thank you very very much, trying to get an scolarship 3 years left of practicing these drills
great instuction. few instructor can tell. recently im thinking about upperbody joint swing path or plane.such as left shoulder, left elbow and left wrist. each joints has its own path with kinetic movements. i will try with swing sensor. thanks for reminding.
wow eureka moment!!!!! I remeber earlier this year I found this out by chance practicing my realease. started playing really well. lost that feeling somewhere and my game has been suffering again. I've been fixated on working on my backswing plane thinking that was the problem till I realized I had been working on everything except impact and follow through. this video solidifies my thinking. trying this tonight. thanks for video.
+peterrivas08 Thanks Peter, sounds like you know what you need to work on, just a case of getting back to the range and sorting it. Certaainly working on impact will have more affect of the ball flight so fingers crossed you get back to that good golf soon.
Very well explained, simple and a good feeling. i knew my hand were creeping towards the ball and couldn't find the feeling to correct it....after watching this it made a world of difference 👍⛳
Thanks for the video! After hearing all the banter about swinging to the right, or swinging to right field, I fell into that trap of moving the hands the wrong way. Now that I have a SwingByte to see my path and hands, I can finally see what you are describing and have a more natural feeling swing path. Any comment on taking the backswing a bit higher to get the downswing more on the inside? Seems to work for me, but seems odd...
Wow, incredible video. I'm a ~10 handicap who basically can't hit driver or 3 wood (driver is too unreliable and 3 wood only goes as far as my 5 iron so I might as well hit a long iron). I hit a nice draw with my long irons down through wedges but always struggled with my woods and driver. a.) getting *less* club head speed with a driver than I do with a 5 iron b.) hitting a nasty push slice. I was always baffled because I was "swinging to the right" but still hitting a slice. Got a skytrak to work on my game this offseason and this helped so so much even the first time I practiced it. Gonna continue to drill this 🙌
I’ve had multiple coaches tell me to get the feeing of swinging out to the right but they say it in a way that promotes throwing your hand outs. My swing has changed over the past year from one that was producing consistent fades and slices into one that now produces straight and even sometimes draws, but I have been suffering with hitting shanks out of nowhere for months now which I never used to do. I’m fairly certain it is as a result of being told to swing out to the right in order to stop the over the top.
Wow, just had a driving range session, and was wondering why when i really rotated my hips and kept the arms in, while fixing my initial over the top action in the transition, i hit it better than when i pushed my hands out, which caused a weak, violent hook. Makes sense. Ripped mu driver 300 yards today, focusing on the top of the backswing and rotating more at my hips and shoulders. Contact wasn't too bad too. Could you possibly do a video on causes for heel strikes and how to fix them, i suspect its either extension in my hips towards the ball or maybe coming onto by toes to much, even the hand movement you were showing in this video could've been the reason why. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks for the videos!
Very good point well made, the only thing you left out was how your hands travel left while the club head travels right and how you can control how much you do it - upward wrist hinge, the more you add - the further right your club head travels in relation to your hands past impact
Vance Weber Of course, if the hands are traveling left past impact and the club head is to travel right there has to be a slight upward hinging of the wrists to achieve it. It should happen automatically but it might not depending on what you were doing before making the change. Understanding that will help make sure you achieve an in-to-out path. Hi Chris, what if I tend to hit out of the toe with an in to out path? Is it to be corrected with the hand path as well? I can hit the center with an out to in path and pull it left, but with my normal swing I hit out of the toe 2/3 times. Love your work! Best regards, Julian
So, would you say it's a bit like swinging around the thighs? I noticed my hand path moving further away from me causing a few shanks, but when i traced my thighs, i was hitting solid. Kinda made me rethink the golfswing tbh.
Very interesting video. 'Feels' like the face stays on target a little longer and will be interested to see how this changes my ball flight. Should be a good practice session tomorrow. Nice one Chris.
+ChrisRyanGolf Increased ball speed, moved the ball strikes closer to the toe and feeling more solid. Perfect. Makes so much difference hitting quality shots more often. 😀 Thanks Chris
Thanks Chris. Can I ask a question? You manage to impart draw spin yet your downswing is slightly over plane. What thought/movement helps you achieve this? Thanks
+Richard Willner HI Richard, my hands are more out towards the ball during the downswing by the club angle is flatter which allows the club head to be delivered from the inside creating the draw.
What can I do to fix the opposite of what you explained. I have a inside to out path problem that is a hook and I'm having to aim too far right. I tried adjusting my grip and my setup.
I'm suffering a similar problem to yourself in that I get too much draw, I feel like everything in my set up is as it has always been but I can't stop massive hooks with my mid to long irons. 11 handicap and it just came out of nowhere... Keep trying to "hold it off" but doesn't work. Any suggestions Chris?! Cheers.
+Dave Abel I feel you Dave! So your club face is closed when it hits the ball and your swing path is probably still in to out. Maybe your ball position is too far ahead or you intentionally rotate hands too much with longer irons? I also hit massive hooks from time to time and every time I do that, I try to slow down on my hips and shoulders and to swing the same as shorter irons and it mostly corrects it. Good luck my friend.
+Dave Abel - I have found that I over draw when my body movement stalls. If I focus on keeping my lover body going until the end the amount of draw is playable.
I have to feel like my hands are going to exit "high" to hit a straight shot. If they exit low, I can hook it. But if I finish high it really straightens it out. Any idea why this is happening?
God took me so long to understand this..."swing to the right"...well most people dont get that the club hits the ball not your hands, so naturally you move your hands right and then scratch your head....finally had a pro show this to me, huge difference...I thought I was going to pull it bad but nope
confused me this, on the slow mo it looked like your club had a neautral path and not at all to the right, same with the ball, started straight not out right a little
+Holtii14 Hi, camera angle may not have been exactly right, my path is most definitely out to the right, working hard on neutralising it but definitely to the right
Excellent video. I actually figured this out on my own golfing on my simulator in the garage. I didn't realize how disconnected my swing got when I tried to swing more right of target. This actually cause me to slice the ball horribly when I tried to swing hard. Great work!

I've just had a lesson which touched on this very subject. Thanks Chris!
thank you so much. wonderful teaching video.

I have been doing exactly what you just explained should be able to fix it now good tip thanks Steve s Australia
Mind blown! Thanks for breaking that down. Great explanation.
Hell yeah mate I’m a +3 and this just changed my game
Very good lesson Chris, thanks!!

Hi Chris. Can pushing your hands to the right explain hooks and pulls? Cheers.
Very good point well made, the only thing you left out was how your hands travel left while the club head travels right and how you can control how much you do it - upward wrist hinge, the more you add - the further right your club head travels in relation to your hands past impact
Can you explain what you mean by "upward wrist hinge....."
Vance Weber
Of course, if the hands are traveling left past impact and the club head is to travel right there has to be a slight upward hinging of the wrists to achieve it. It should happen automatically but it might not depending on what you were doing before making the change. Understanding that will help make sure you achieve an in-to-out path. It's a great video and great advice, just a small detail
This is the piece I was missing thanks
Very helpful! Thanks.
Hi Chris, what if I tend to hit out of the toe with an in to out path? Is it to be corrected with the hand path as well? I can hit the center with an out to in path and pull it left, but with my normal swing I hit out of the toe 2/3 times. Love your work! Best regards, Julian

Great video Chris.
Excellent explanation thanks
+Daryl Hall Thanks Daryl
Does this work with a driver? Thanks
+ChrisRyanGolf Thank you. Perhaps a future video?
Would you hit the driver the same way? Thanks
Hi Robert, yes the same with all clubs 👍
Maybe you can do an update with an overhead view of the swing?
Old but gold
Awesome !! Thanks Chris
+Steven Dusza Thanks Steven
What can I do to fix the opposite of what you explained. I have a inside to out path problem that is a hook and I'm having to aim too far right. I tried adjusting my grip and my setup.
Uhhh this is the answer...
It turns out I seem to be falling back in the swing... Swaying really
Instead of trying to write clever comments, just go out there and do exactly what Chris demonstrates in this video. You'll be amazed! Thanks, Chris!
Thank you
I have to feel like my hands are going to exit "high" to hit a straight shot. If they exit low, I can hook it. But if I finish high it really straightens it out. Any idea why this is happening?
great explanation finallyyyyyy
That's a great clear explanation. Thanks.
excellent
brilliant
Chris, you could call this video,"In search of the Holy Grail"
Another excellent tip.
Hey Chris, you are great golfer, but I just wonder why your down swing has a stiffer angle than your back swing.
And i have to wonder why ur so gay
I really struggle with this and as a result have some flicking going to close the face.
How do you swing left and not toe it?
Hi Matthew, the hands will/should be moving left but the club head can still be travelling neutrally to the target 👍
God took me so long to understand this..."swing to the right"...well most people dont get that the club hits the ball not your hands, so naturally you move your hands right and then scratch your head....finally had a pro show this to me, huge difference...I thought I was going to pull it bad but nope
why do I cut across the ball when doing this
Cause ur bad
confused me this, on the slow mo it looked like your club had a neautral path and not at all to the right, same with the ball, started straight not out right a little
+Holtii14 Hi, camera angle may not have been exactly right, my path is most definitely out to the right, working hard on neutralising it but definitely to the right
This video just contradict your other video (GOLF SWING | WHAT IS HAND PATH? ) So what is the correct teaching here ?
+C N hi CN, I believe these videos convey the same message don't they? Both videos explain how the hands move more inwards through impact.
Good lord i hope this fixes my shank
