I know this is now an old video, but as a new Magic player, I’d like to say thank you for making this video. It really helped me a lot, deck building always confused me, but you laid it down in laymen’s terms. Thanks again, and keep up the great work!
i bought a gatecrash fat pack online the other day (and a couple boosters) to start me off, im completley new to mtg exept for playing the trial game on xbox a bit, ive googled how to make a deck a million times by now, but nothing is more effective then seeing someone legititly do it in front of you, this is the first time i have seen that happen so thanks a ton man, easily the most useful mtg resourse i have come across to date
Thanks Boogie. That helps a lot. I've just recently moved to a state I know no one in so I thought I would buy some cards and get back in to magic after 8 years. I am mostly doing this to meet some new like minded people at the gaming shop. Thanks again for everything you do for us. I wish I could play a few rounds with you
I am 13 and I joined a magic: the gathering club today. I never played the card game but played the video game as a kid. this will really help me. thanks.
Thanks bud, really appreciate stuff like this; I've been playing magic on and off over the years, I've played with premade decks, but swayed more toward Poke-Yugioh over the years. This is the first time I've seriously put effort into building a deck.
I've probably played Magic three or four times in my life, and I still watched this entire video. Haha, Thanks, man. Always something interesting on this and your other channel.
Good call Boogie. When I put a deck together, I'll play a game or two against some friends to see how the deck runs. Just in case I want to switch out cards, I'll bring my cards with me, just in case I want to switch, or something doesn't work. That doesn't happen as much now, considering I've been playing for 20 years. Again, I enjoyed how you explained everything. Bring cards with you in case you want to fix up the deck is the only thing I suggest if you go someplace to play
Thank you for doing this tutorial! I went to a theoros booster draft for the first time and had some help building a booster deck, but I bought a starter kit afterwards and wanted to know a basic build. Keep up the great vids :)
omg boogie i so needed this. Just literally like 3 days ago i wanted to start getting back into magic (havent played seriously in like 6 years or so) and broke out all my cards and tried to learn all the new rules sicne theres a local hobby shop that hosts games. If you could make this a whole series it would be AWESOME!
hello boogie this video helped me out so much i dint have a clue how to build my first deack ive watched loads of videos done by other people but they never explained it as well as you ! THANK YOU
Boogie, this video is fantastic! I hope that you continue to make MTG videos on guides or unboxings or just watching you open up some boosters, cant wait to see what else you can produce.
Thanks for this video! I have no idea why, but I've developed a strong interest in Magic in the last few weeks. I've been playing a ton of games through the Xbox Live Arcade game, and I'm planning on building my first deck soon.
Awesome video! Just getting in to MTG myself. Would love to see more videos on gameplay, different game styles, deck building. All that good stuff for us beginners.
I would, that's how I started and starting now with Return to Ravnica and Gatecrash is said to be the most fun time to start. Intro decks are essentially like springboards, you'll want to boost that deck more or less.
Ive been playing MTG for years spending a lot of time on deck building, I think ill have to try out your organized version of deck building when W14 comes out. Awesome video.
Thank you so much! I was having so many issues with my deck until now. My curve was Wayyy off, with nearly half of my creatures taking 6 or more. I just loved the power a little too much :p. Thanks again!
Boogie, You got me in to Magic:) found a local playgroup and got a friend to play with me. Very fun game and not that expensive if you loking to play casual and for fun!
Hey I worked a security detail at a comic book store in town for Halloween and the owner gave me a bunch of cards to start a deck with , thanks for the intro i am really looking forward to going back and playing ,
Good video Boogie, just watched for the hell of it. Good start for people who are not really sure what to do though. I really wish I could play vs ya haha.
Great tutorial, Boogie. Back when I first got into magic, there were quite a few people who chose green/black for their two-color decks; it's a good starting combination for people who want to venture away from mono-color. Strangely enough, my first decent two-color deck was red/green. Go figure. :)
Green is a cool color to start on because there are a lot of big creatures you can use to bash face. I started on a red deck because I wanted to play a really strong early game. White can be really cool because it has a lot of protection and power ups. Blue is kind of based around controlling what's happening on the board, and black is about killing things and reviving things from the dead.
They don't all need to be from the same set, you can have, for example cards from Return to Ravnica and Avacyn Restored. But that all also depends on what type of magic you play and what cards are legal for that game type. If it's just you and a few friends then you don't need to worry. But if the deck is for Type two (Friday Night Magic format) then only certain sets are allowed, currently M14, Dragons Maze, Gatecrash, Return to Ravnica, and M13 are legal in FNM.
OMG! I was watching this video all the way through because a while ago i suddenly just could not make a deck of cards. I'd sit there, get a bunch of cards together, seriously, I could sit with my cards for 6 hours (I did it once) and I didn't come away with a completed deck :(. POINT BEING, I just saw the name of the uploader is boogieplays - I LOVE watching Boogie's videos! If this is the boogie I've seen before, as i suspect, holy crap! I stumbled onto your video about magic by accident!
Boogie I started playing because of your videos and i'm quite fat so I didn't like clubs at all but i got it to magic and now I cant wait till Friday where i can go to a place where i'm not judged by my weight or the way i look. thank you.
Really nice and informative video. I'd like to know if there are plans for doing more tutorials. Maybe combined with your unboxings? Since you're an experienced Magic player and a known UA-camr, I think that would help beginners and also get more people to play Magic: The Gathering. Hope you read this comment.
My favorite Red deck was a suicide build, using many goblins and low mana cost creatures, while utilizing cards that allowed death based damage. It allowed me to play ALOT of quick/cheap creatures, and for me to benefit from both the unblockable attacks/skills of certain 1-2 damage creatures, while also taking advantage of how easily they die. (Rage Thrower deals 2 damage for every creature that dies. So charge alot of goblins at once and 5 dead goblins = 10 damage. Or 20 if you have 2 throwers)
if you mean how well im playing, im doing good, i got a 2015 deck builders toolkit at christmas and made a good-ish deck, been enthusiastic about this gane ever since!
There are various types of land that you can use that produce two colors or any color. Using only one color limits the cards you can use. Instead of using one colors best cards, you can use the best cards from various colors.
thanks boogie2988 I really appreciate the help. This video was probably one of the first vids I watched when I first started playing magic. It really helped me a lot, and now im pwning a buch of my friends with this awesome green red deck! XD I hope you have a great day.
I like how you say, the color that speaks to you. It is really cool how Magic does this but based on the symbol and color of the 5 choices, the people who prefer one over another before they even PLAY Magic, and then when they do play with the color that "speaks to them" it really is an awesome pick and really is the best for the in their strategy and how they play. LIKE 👍
A blue deck is more about setting up long term combinations and stopping your opponent or opponents. I do know a few cool Mythic Rare blue cards that are awesome such as Omniscience, Temporal Mastery and Time Warp. But basing a (blue) deck around a single theme instead of a single card is smarter in my opinion.
The more colors you have, the less likely you are to draw the mana you want, but you can use all the colors if you want. So a 1 color deck will be the most reliable as far as having the mana you need, and a 5 color deck will be less reliable. If you're doing your first deck, 1 or 2 colors is probably best. Also you need to look at the cards you picked and their mana cost to decide exactly how many of each land you want. If all your green cards cost a lot of green mana, then put in more forests.
thanks this was a big help! I've been playing magic for a few months but i've been using my friends deck. i just got a starter and some boosters so this helps a lot. Woo! i have 2 months until the anime con....let the intense training begin >:3
Judging from the comments you should do more such videos. There is something called a power curve and that is tied to spell costs. For example, if you are using lots of one to two mana spells, unless you have a really bad draw with land you can pressure especially in the early game, which is something suited to red direct damage oriented decks, white weenie (lots of small creatures supplemented by boardclearers like Wrath of God) or green (or red/green) pumping decks (supplemented by for example Gigant Growth, Overrun or supplementd by red direct damage and a few large blockers which does fairly well). A more balanced approach is good for mid-game and really expensive decks (casting cost), well... they virtually do not exists in a compeditive envvironment. Usually decks with expensive spells try to circumvent the casting cost, like black reanimators, for example. If you play in a beginner environment, especially with more than two players, though, you might consider hanging onto some of these big, expensive creatures which are hard to deal with because games are usually slower and creatures are king. I still remember my friends Rock Hydra or my first Sengir Vampire. As it gets more advanced and a good mix of removal spells are around things get a bit more complicated. Going over 60 is generally not that great unless you have a really good reason to do so, because it skews drawing probabilities; in other words: it slows down your deck. 61-62 is okay, but at 64 you really notice a difference. Usually the rule is 40 cards and 20 land, however that is really tied how your deck is built. An agressive red deck may add more land for faster resource gain and better land draw early on. Then there is fast mana, which is including things like Moxes (wich you most likely will not see outside of Type 1 environments), Sol Ring, but also creature mana like Birds of Paradise, all sort of elves and so on. Then there are (mostly green) spells which let you add land from your deck into play (Land Tax for example). Some decks get away with using less land, some need more. Then there is, of course the multicolor aspect and those decks do especially well with multicolor mana sources like dual-lands and anything providing you with a mana of the color of your choice. Mono-color decks are usually more stable, faster and if you are beginning and don't have access to all those fancy mana sources, better to start out with. Here are some questions you may ask yourself when building a deck: How do i deal with creatures? How do i deal with enchantments? How do i deal with artifacts? How am i going to win? How do i keep my opponent from winning? If you can answer all the above and got a solid power curve and are not too far above 60 cards you are already looking at a very solid deck. It doesn't have to have expensive cards or rares in it at all. And... oh yes: its a pretty big difference if you build a deck for a duel or a game with a group of other people. Whilst the former is more compeditive and professional the latter is definetly more fun. Card (cards on the table or in hand) advantage is king.
I bought a Deck Builders Toolkit and am working on sorting through them to make a couple decks so me and my brother can learn together but keep getting overwhelmed about where to begin when making a deck.
Newbie here but i have a question. Wouldnt running two colors be almost inefficient? Wouldnt it make more sense to run one color that way you will always have the appropriate land? Our you could have chosen that given the cards you have at hand. Great work as always boogie
watched this video a this morning a and it got me in the mood sooi just started playing today, made a green deck and a white deck already won a few battle and lost some too realy like thise and wished i got in to it sooner, THANKS YOU
Thanks for this, chum. I've been trying to get into Magic for awhile, but never really went out looking for help. This is good stuff. How do you usually do when you play?
if you go to the magic: the gathering store locator, you can type in your zip code and it will find local game shops in your area where you can play magic with people. Friday night magic is a great way to play with others.
There are people at the game store that I play at that only play casually with their friends. They don't enter any of the tournaments and they are okay with that. If you can find a group of people like that, it's pretty easy to get started. When I started playing, I was surrounded by really competitive players and for me that was a good thing, but if that's not your deal you definitely will be able to find other people who want casual games.
i'm still learning how to play but i'm thinking of using a red/green deck just because i have more of those monsters. playing my first official game tomarrow.
My primary colors are black and anything mixed with black. My best deck was a black and white deck. It felt good dealing out Soul Burns and the like while preventing damage with Holy Day.
Hey boogie this really helped me build my deck I got into magic because of seeing your videos about it and it looked really fun. So this really helped me. Also where do you buy your packs from?
Hey boogie, great video, just as I was thinking of joining! I have a question though; what set would you recommend to buy, this is where I get confused as there is the base 2013 sets and then the return to ravinca and gatecrash sets, which one!? Also What should I buy first, one of the starter kit things, a fat pack or boosterbox, or anything I missed???
Boogie I REALLY want to start to play Magic, but I feel like I'm going to be thrown right in at the deep end. Anyways do you think you'll ever do a beginners guide to the game? I for one would watch :D
It`s great for being annoying! And fairly good if you know how to use it. If you want a blue deck I recommend the Dragon`s maze Blue-White deck or the Gatecrash Blue-Black. Unless you want to play Mono. And I`m fairly new into MTG too. so... yeah.
Huh, building my first magic deck would be kinda like building my first Pokemon deck. Everything boogie said to do I did when I built my Pokemon deck haha. I sorted my cards from typing, I had significantly more Psychic and Fire Pokemon and was going to use a Fire Ultra Rare, and my deck turned out pretty good for a first deck. I only just recently got into TCG's I guess I should try Magic too.
Boogie, a way to get even distribution of your cards is to weave your cards. Split your creatures, lands, and other cards in 3 piles. Make a 4th pile, you do this by using a creature and the other cards. Take 1 card at a time from each pile and stack them up. Then do the same thing with your lands and your 4th pile. This will usually by a 2/1 stack (2 cards from 4th pile, and 1 card from land). Then shuffle your cards by having them slide into the other dick without bridging....
This was like watching Bob Ross build a Magic deck. 10/10
There's no mistakes building a library in magic the gathering. only happy accidents.
Bob Ross on crack
BroceedToCheckpoint I got help and built my first mono red deck i haven't gotten a chance to read into it yet

A Magic: The Gathering video!? With REAL cards?
Yep. Liked, Subbed. Let's do this.
Tip for deck builders when deciding your color: realize that each color has different attributes. White decks are typically defensive where creatures boost each other, but are weak alone. Green decks are balanced and have high Power and Toughness, but few tricks otherwise. Blue decks however thrive on trickery, usually with instants or sorceries, but have below average power and toughness. Red decks are very aggressive, focusing on attacking and dealing dmg, but fail at defending. Black decks often require some self-sacrifice to succeed, like sacrificing creatures, but can pack quite a punch when doing so.
With these in mind, understand you'll have trouble if you play a deck type you're not comfortable with. For example, I stray from Red and Black decks, because I like amassing armies and playing defensively. These guidelines aren't always true and but these are the standard theme. I suggest making your first deck dual colored, because despite being a bit harder to balance, it will feel more rewarding and whole. I found solo colored decks to be a bit of a bore, and generally stay away from them, unless I have a theme that requires it. (Such as my nightmare deck where cards get power for each swamp I have)
There are plenty of deck building guides online which can help you. I'd suggest 24 lands as a rule of thumb. And always, make sure you have low cost spells. I love my golem deck to death, but having 70% of the deck 4+ mana means I lose a lot with it when I can't get the ball rolling fast enough. I like to focus the bulk around 2-3 cost mana. it offers a good balance of strength and ease of play. But of course, add a few 1 cost and 5+
I know this is now an old video, but as a new Magic player, I’d like to say thank you for making this video. It really helped me a lot, deck building always confused me, but you laid it down in laymen’s terms. Thanks again, and keep up the great work!
I'm no stranger to building decks, but I still enjoyed every bit of this video. Keep the Magic content coming! Love you man!
i bought a gatecrash fat pack online the other day (and a couple boosters) to start me off, im completley new to mtg exept for playing the trial game on xbox a bit, ive googled how to make a deck a million times by now, but nothing is more effective then seeing someone legititly do it in front of you, this is the first time i have seen that happen so thanks a ton man, easily the most useful mtg resourse i have come across to date
Thanks Boogie. That helps a lot. I've just recently moved to a state I know no one in so I thought I would buy some cards and get back in to magic after 8 years. I'm using a black white deck right now, and it's very useful. I'm thinking of making a few new decks as well.
Im trying to build one now, as a new player, are you playing with a lifegain one? If so, what key cards are you using?:)
Okay cheers man!:D
Hi roman

Good video Boogie, just watched for the hell of it. Good start for people who are not really sure what to do though. I really wish I could play vs ya haha.
So many good times playing Magic. I was always using mono Black, my favorite were Zombie decks.
It'd be nice to get back into this game again.
I'm so glad I found this boogie. VERY HELPFUL!
color is the best place to begin, followed by theme which is also followed by ratios and casting costs
Great tutorial, Boogie. Back when I first got into magic, there were quite a few people who chose green/black for their two-color decks; it's a good starting combination for people who want to venture away from mono-color. This was actually a fantastic video that really helped me out. Thanks!
Thanks man helped me a lot coming from a beginner I just tried my deck out it worked great I mixed blue and black mana
Really nice and informative video. I'd like to know if there are plans for doing more tutorials. Maybe combined with your unboxings? (No offense btw)

Oculus_Official Gain*
Also, cool how you advanced. Those 10 months feel like a second, right?
*game haha, im not sure what you mean with 10 months being a second, i do other things as well as magic, but yea magic is fun and im decent at it! :)
Oculus_Official By a second I mean they went by so fast, right?
Such an awesome video!! Perfect explanation on a first magic deck!
Keep up the magic videos boogie!!! I am loving it
good stuff. I was hoping to see you playing some of your actual decks, (wanted to see some boogie moves!!) but this'll do!!
I would play with you dude!
Thanks for the video GREAT help! me and the wife are starting out new and this helped alot!
Keep up the great work!
Yes they do! Look on the MTG website and go on the store locator and you will find shops which take part in friday night magic and sell the cards

Its a wonderful video Boogie :) Informative and easy to understand, many thanks.
Just started playing... I'm not too bad at it. still a newbie but, I've managed to build a decent Blue and green deck.
i used to use blue green til i found out my playstile was an al out attack kind of deck
thanks this was a big help! I've been playing magic for a few months but i've been using my friends deck. i just got a starter and some boosters so this helps a lot. Woo! i have 2 months until the anime con....let the intense training begin >:3

Here are some questions you may ask yourself when building a deck:
How do i deal with creatures?
How do i deal with enchantments?
How do i deal with artifacts?
How am i going to win?
How do i keep my opponent from winning?
If you can answer all the above and got a solid power curve and are not too far above 60 cards you are already looking at a very solid deck. It doesn't have to have expensive cards or rares in it at all.
And... oh yes: its a pretty big difference if you build a deck for a duel or a game with a group of other people. Whilst the former is more compeditive and professional the latter is definetly more fun.
Card (cards on the table or in hand) advantage is king.
Where i live there are no tournaments, but you still want to shuffle for a good couple minutes after the distribution.
I bought a Deck Builders Toolkit and am working on sorting through them to make a couple decks so me and my brother can learn together but keep getting overwhelmed about where to begin when making a deck.
Dang I wish this came out 2 years before I ended high school. I had bought my red deck then, this could have helped out a lot.
Newbie here but i have a question. Wouldnt running two colors be almost inefficient? Wouldnt it make more sense to run one color that way you will always have the appropriate land? Our you could have chosen that given the cards you have at hand. Great work as always boogie
watched this video a this morning a and it got me in the mood sooi just started playing today, made a green deck and a white deck already won a few battle and lost some too realy like thise and wished i got in to it sooner, THANKS YOU
to be honest i dont like card games but boogie just make his videos interesting :) i dont like the game but i like the video :) good job man
Thanks for this, chum.
Dear Boogie, you are my hero.
@TheDC98 You're going to want to make a 1 or 2 color deck for a beginner deck.
I currently am using a red green and a black green and thanks this video really helped me out
i'm still learning how to play but i'm thinking of using a red/green deck just because i have more of those monsters. playing my first official game tomarrow.
My primary colors are black and anything mixed with black. My best deck was a black and white deck. It felt good dealing out Soul Burns and the like while preventing damage with Holy Day.
If you have time boggie, check out the newish MOBA from Hi-rez "Smite". It's amazing and I'd love you play it with you and show you the ropes.
Thanks man I just got this game(only because Nexius plays =D) and this really helped me get started!!!!
Really good guide thanks boogie! Keep up the good work
My first deck was an 85-card mono black control deck.
Ah the good old days :P
Hey boogie this really helped me build my deck I got into magic because of seeing your videos about it and it looked really fun. So this really helped me. Also where do you buy your packs from?
Thank you this helped me alot... even though i havent got to test my deck yet i think it will work just fine. thanks
That boss shuffle though
Exactly what I was looking for...thanks so much!
Get em boogie.
the MTG planewalkers games are great for learning to play.
Perfect timing! lol My friends and I just started getting into MTG.
boogie dude i also found out about MTG from you now i have purchased myself a beginners pack now i shall learn fistpump from england
Great video boogie :) will you do how to build an advanced deck?
Boogie I REALLY want to start to play Magic, but I feel like I'm going to be thrown right in at the deep end. Anyways do you think you'll ever do a beginners guide to the game? I for one would watch :D
Thanks Boogie! Exactly what I was looking for
It`s great for being annoying!
