As a child I remember seeing Dorothy Dandridge in Carmen with Harry Belafonte, and being confused about the relative absence of publicity around this stunning and talented actress. This was one of the first indicators in my childhood that made me realise that USA was not a good place to be if you were black. It reinforced the social unrest and civil rights incidents that happened that we heard about in the 60s and 70s as we grew up.

@user-pj7we7wd5t well I discovered Marilyn and Dorothy around the same time !!! Long before the Internet, when information wasn't so easily accessible. It was up to the individual to do the research.
I LOVE DOROTHY DANDRIDGE!!!!!! 🥰 Carmen Jones is the ONLY musical that I will watch repeatedly!! Such a beautiful and talented woman that NEVER received all the credit she should have and fought tooth and nail in EVERYTHING she did in her short life!! So happy to have been born on her birthday! 🥰
I saw Carmen as a child, and thought she and Harry were two of the most beautiful people I had ever seen. They were breathtaking. Her death at the end was hard to swallow
Excellent piece. If any actor at the time could make a claim to have "it", it would have been Dorothy. She could dance, she could sing and she could certainly act. She was beautiful..... and very nice looking too. She deserved so much better than Hollywood of the time was willing to provide.
Also I wish we knew who runs her estate if there is one :( . She truly is iconic. She should be as marketed in merchandise as much as Marylin monroe. Id love that. And the profits should go to the care of her daughter.
Now that you mention the parallels, I can see glimpses of Dorothy Dandrige in that scene from ‘Niagara’ where she wears that iconic dress and tells a guy to play her record.
I love Dorothy Danridge 💜. She is such a beautiful and true Queen. I love her beauty, her voice and just her overall. I just love hearing the fact that Marilyn Monroe and her really good friends. (To be honest I love the fact that Marilyn played her part in fighting against racism back then. Like the story how she helped Ella Fitzgerald to get booked in one of the night clubs and she told the owner of the nightclub that if they don't book her then she would not come to the club anymore. And when she did get booked Marilyn kept her promise and she came there every night and sat in the front row. Hearing that story always warned my heart because knowing that Marilyn was really a person who didn't see color she just saw people and didn't care about race😊💜.) Now there was another article that I read that really made me so happy it involved Dorothy and Marlon Brando and I read an article where Dorothy and Marlon attended a ceremony and I believe Dorothy had won an award for something and Marlon was the one giving the award to her and when she got up on stage to recieve the award Marlon flat out kissed her on the lips in front of everybody that was there💯😊. Now I know back in the day that was very taboo and I want to say that was legal back then but see I love the fact that Marlon didn't care he just flat out did it because the man liked what he like and he liked miss beautiful Dorothy Dandridge. If I was Dorothy hell I wouldn't even be mad at him for that 💯. But I truly love this and I love Miss Dorothy Dandridge May that woman rest in peace and paradise she will ever for be a true Queen💜👑✨.
Same here, the industry was and still is run by them in spite of globalised industry. Speaking as a working actress if you dont, you can get labelled as difficult and lose work
I loved Carmen Jones, she was wonderful in that role, I like when the boxer husky miller told pearl Bailey, don't come back unless you got heatwave wit ya...she was beautiful, and like many of us she had childhood trauma that haunted her all her life... You narrated this story perfectly....
If ya’ll knew anything about Marilyn, you’d understand that this makes a lot of sense. Marilyn, as Sinatra had LOTS of inspiration from these women. Marilyn had a lot of similar friendships with fellow black artists. It wasn’t just Ella Fitzgerald.
This will always forever be a mystery to me, just hearing about her life story and also her daughter I know it hurt Dorothy to put her in a institution, but at the time there was just no support no family around no resources to help, especially being a young single black Mom at the time, I wish somebody could have helped Dorothy or assist her , could see why she fell into a depression. There’s so many issues going on, but not enough help for her or even support at the time, I can only imagine how lonely she must’ve felt with the people around her, especially those useless men! And to top it off not even be able to get the proper help and care for your own daughter I can tell she really loved her.
Great presentation. I've always thought Janet Jackson had a striking resemblance to Dorothy Dandridge n should have played in her biopic btw, that thumbnail pic she looks so stunning ✨
Thanks, for another amazing production. This is the most tragic one Karine. What happened to her daughter Harolyn was crazy. Her marriage to one of the Nicholas Brothers, who were famous dancers in the 40s and 50s was tragic. I heard too that Harolyn. Here is what happened to Harolyn: Harolyn Suzanne Nicholas was the daughter of Dorothy Dandridge, a famous American actress, singer, and dancer. She was born on September 2, 1943, and died in 2003 at the age of 60.
If you remember at least I somewhat do like Marilyn Monroe was she was haunted by those in the media there's theories that a case between her a O'Hare back in the 50's went to court over something bizzar
God sees believers and nonbelievers. He doesn’t see color. One of my goals is to aspire to how God sees people - as who they are, not what they look like.
Marilyn monroe had already established her " marilyn " persona in niagra and gentlemen prefer blondes before Carmen Jones was made . Joyce Bryant who passed away recently, was known as the black marilyn monroe. I disagree with the Beyonce status... I'm really tired of people comparing Beyonce with Legendary Icons... it's annoying...other than that... I loved the video... I just don't understand why Beyonce is always talked about when it comes to black women going through racism and hardships to make it in the Entertainment Industry
Exactly
This 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Agreed
Ya I concur 🪶💯
True
Always appreciate your breakdowns Karine and you're right, it is up to the people to keep DD's legacy alive. A fave quote of hers is "I can't play a slave." I know that's right lol.
Dorothy Dandridge was stunning!
RIP to the ever so beautiful Ms. Dorothy Dandridge.
according to quincy jones...ERRRYBUDDY had some sort of 'relationship' with marlon brando...there needed to be a support group for anyone who knew him, dated him, slept with him or just brushed up against him in a crowded room...
Dorothy Dandridge was an amazing actress as well as a beautiful woman. I would like to know more about her family as well. Thank you for keeping us posted and if you have anything else greatly appreciate it.
Madame Tussauds needs to honor Ms. Dandridge with her own wax figure. True legend gone too soon.
They won't do that because they don't want the world to know who inspired Marilyn.
I’m ashamed that I didn’t know her, sad that she’s not remembered as one of the biggest 60’s actress
ms.karine dorothy dandrige is one of my favorite actress i finally saw the movie starring halle berry i finally saw her life how she was as person and actress to love you dorothy dandrige rip.
I would love to hear more about the whereabouts of her estranged family members. Great cover Karine 👌🏽
I am interested on such facts too! I do know that a detroit-based actor, Denzell Dandridge is a grand-nephew of Dorothy. He is a great actor, though he is usually in Independent films that are featured on Tubi.
Thank you for your time and effort ❤ so many of our black artists tragically leave us and we never know about them.. only what we are “told”
The white institutions. They have so much energy and support for the LGBTQ+ but not us. No compensation like they did to the Jews, Native Americans & Aboriginals.
Well it's up to you to do the research and educate yourself.
@@clivecarser7356 but, Gosh, wouldn't it help if these artists were rightfully celebrated and in our face as much as other white icons were!
@user-pj7we7wd5t well I discovered Marilyn and Dorothy around the same time !!! Long before the Internet, when information wasn't so easily accessible. It was up to the individual to do the research.
An underrated ICON. She deserves all the flowers❤❤
Dorothy is beautiful with great style, poise, talent, and class.
Been waiting for this one - Dorothy was an absolute goddess.
Dorothy Dandridge and Vanessa L Williams were two of the most gorgeous women to ever live!💯
I believe her daughter passed away years ago
You never know in Hollywood..
Dorthy Dandridge was so beautiful ❤😢
Dorothy is Still An Icon in my Eyes!!!😊😮😊
I love her face! So beautiful and expressive!
I felt that Otto Preminger was somewhat jealous of her. He didn't want her to really succeed.
What a beauty!! She walked so Miss Monroe could run 🌹👠
I have always admired her. I hate that she constantly sought validation from white men. However, I guess she was a product of the times.
Same here, the industry was and still is run by them in spite of globalised industry. Speaking as a working actress if you dont, you can get labelled as difficult and lose work
@@tcrijwanachoudhury what a shame.
It’s much deeper that her just soughting out validation from white men…
@@ivyreid7 In what way?
I loved Carmen Jones, she was wonderful in that role, I like when the boxer husky miller told pearl Bailey, don't come back unless you got heatwave wit ya...she was beautiful, and like many of us she had childhood trauma that haunted her all her life... You narrated this story perfectly....
Lovely. Just here to chime in that 5’5 isn’t short.
Omg she was so gorgeous, how did I not hear of her before!?
Just in time! 🥰 she sure was Marilyn's muse.. this is gonna be good. Love you Karine ❤️🥰💕
Very sad ending! 😢She needs her flowers 💐
Otto Premininger hurt her professionally due to his controlling nature. She deserved better. Her loss was such a tragedy 😢 💔
Thank you for highlighting the beautiful Dorothy Dandrige. I love her and she's never gotten half the credit & shine she deserves.
Keep in mind this is the 50's now both women endure Soo much that the Hollywood kept hidden what these women went through
Dorothy Dandrige kissing Harry Belafonte is a match in heaven.
Such a sad life -she deserves more recognition
She was the Original of her look and style 🌹 Inspirational to many including some who were favored via the times.
Marilyn and Dorothy are both queens! Dorothy surely inspired her ❤❤❤❤❤
She is absolutely drop dead gorgeous!!!🤩
Rest with Angel's Dorothy!😔💜✌️
Great presentation. I've always thought Janet Jackson had a striking resemblance to Dorothy Dandridge n should have played in her biopic btw, that thumbnail pic she looks so stunning ✨
She was beautiful & talented!
Drop dead gorgeous woman.. A GODDESS...
❤ she was beautiful
First of all This woman is drop dead gorgeous
What a black beauty
My fav actress. Thank you for highlighting her amazing talent and legacy! ♥️
She was truly amazing and really broke barriers for us black women in the entertainment industry. Thank you so much for doing Dorothy. 🫶🏾
If you remember at least I somewhat do like Marilyn Monroe was she was haunted by those in the media there's theories that a case between her a O'Hare back in the 50's went to court over something bizzar
Miss Dandridge is beautiful! She has a beautiful voice too. I’ve never see “Carmen”. I’ll have to watch some time.
God sees believers and nonbelievers. He doesn’t see color. One of my goals is to aspire to how God sees people - as who they are, not what they look like.
She’s gorgeous 😍
Marilyn monroe had already established her " marilyn " persona in niagra and gentlemen prefer blondes before Carmen Jones was made . Joyce Bryant who passed away recently, was known as the black marilyn monroe. I have never seen a photo of marilyn and Dorothy together and her sister was called Vivien, saw an interview with her once and she came across as jealous of Dorothy.
Yea girl it’s lies. They weren’t friends and she wasn’t MMs muse. People just make stuff up nowadays out of thin air.
@@bananafanalll6651 exactly!!! Glad someone else's up to speed !!!
Bruh use GOOGLE wtf is wrong with y’all. Why do you hate black women so much and won’t admit the truth.
DOROTHY DANDRIDGE…ICON & LEGEND🏆🏆THANK YOU HALLE BERRY FOR LETTING THE WORLD KNOW, HOW TALENTED AND BEAUTIFUL ACTRESS AND ENTERTAINER SHE WAS. GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN😇R.I.P DOROTHY DANDRIDGE🌹🌹🌹
Shes sooo beautiful!!
