Hit the nail in the head with the R8 doing well in a studio setting. We can't forget that aside from A7S III and smaller sensor cameras (GH6, FX30, etc.), the R8 will be the cheapest option at $1500 providing 4k 60p 10bit with NO CROP. For talking heads, simple product shots - anything on a tripod - the R8 will do very well. I can see this as a great start for any starting youtuber shooting indoors with photography as a hobby/profession on the side. I do think Canon has a problem with lens selection, and anyone looking at the bigger picture with their finances may still look toward Sony for their cheaper well-performing third party lenses like the Tamron f/2.8s. For someone starting out though? They may be satisfied with the lower end RF options or adapt EF to RF. Knowing someone can get a full frame 4k 60p 10bit no crop video setup with decent phase-detect autofocus for $1700 (includes kit lens) new is mind-boggling to me.
As a fellow hardcore camera nerd I greatly appreciate your perspectives on all the stuff that goes into this game… Canon is certainly in trouble if they don’t start pumping out lenses asap. @@lbeetech That's ok if you don't, many, and I mean MANY of the canon users we talk to are leaving the system because there aren't a lot of Native RF options both in variety and price. And the EF options are being phased out so there will be even less.

I know, there are so many better cameras out there, but all are that much bigger (even the next biggest) that they already need the camera bag. This is the only one (at least from Canon) that fits the "in your pocket" scenario... The porting to R50 seems almost superfluous, to me a gimmick to buy the same camera again.... sigh. The point of this camera is that it's SO TINY AND COMPACT. I understand the R lenses are much better than the M lenses, but they are also THAT MUCH BIGGER that the R50 is just irrelevant... The more interesting question is R8 vs R7. They are like fraternal twins. The R8 is a more vlog-oriented camera for video in the ballpark of Sony's ZV-E10 series whereas the R7 is a prosumer photography-oriented camera. New to both of you, got episode 1 on my homepage and loving it so far! At 42:00, I don't think many people will drop money on those bigger lenses to pair with this. Some will for sure, but the frustration that you expressed in episode 1 about the big lens gaps Canon has for pros and prosumers... I don't think that frustrating gaps exists for the person "walking into Best Buy" that this R8 is a great fit for (or the R10 as well). They have the 24, 35 and 85 all with IS for relatively cheap. Not the best ever, but you can pair any with the R8 and still stay around $2k. And all those combos will feel nice. Some people will grab the constant f4 zooms - I used the 24-105 f4 with my RP before moving to the R6, and that's great, but even that starts to feel unbalanced. Because it's not weather sealed, it only has one card, and the battery is gonna be kinda rough like you said... naturally I think people that are buying the $2k+ glass are going to be pushed up market. That's probably a disappointment to would-be Rii buyers, but for would-be RPii buyers, this seems like a no-brainer stretch purchase if possible.
Dan great to have you! Thanks for listening/watching. You make some really good points. I personally think those are great lenses for this camera, but not necessarily great lenses. for photos for sure, for video that's another story. Then again for the person buying this camera, they're probably not ready or need the only other option which are the L series glass. I honestly wouldn't mind snatching the R8 up just to use as a photo camera, but then again, I am the person who has the L series lenses and kind of worry about the mount and the egos.
@@BrandonTalbot I think that's really fair about the photo/video split and the haphazard segmentation you guys hit on toward the end certainly doesn't help. I agree with you guys, Canon must release new lenses, also some aps-c lenses for the R7, Fuji is coming hot, for the last year it became a thing and they are bringing really awesome cameras, and improving a lot in the AF system, so if Canon doesn't open up their eyes, they will be eaten by Sony and Fuji. I'm even considering getting a Fuji camera, I have the t3i, started photography not so long ago, and I think it's time to get a new camera, and the lens options for Fuji is so awesome
I agree with Brandon 100% on what he said about the R8: -good for travel photography. -best paired with the budget 1.8 primes. I know there are a lot of people out there who just want good travel or casual family photos and some of those people don’t do video. And R6 is probably out of their budget. For the battery issue, I would rather have a optical viewfinder if it means extending battery life, but I guess that’s not very in line with the market.
Hey guys, another great episode! I think josh is not looking wide enough about the use case of cameras. For example my girlfriend has build a business with Rp and RF85/2.0 and she is still using it for both photo and video doing jobs for rather big clients here in europe. You may ask why didn't she upgraded yet? Well this is still fine especially for the photos, she is producing vertical content so video in 1080 is fine also, but maybe now she goes for the R8 since it is better in video and video is getting more popular. And for her 1 hour of video in 4K is more than enough she goes easily with 2 batteries. Plus Josh is sightly ignoring the fact that for most people the whole 1.8 line up is actually not that expensive and it is really great and more than enough for majority of people that gonna buy that camera. Also to put in the perspective how good that lenses are, better than most people are aware is the fact I used EF28/1.8 that is optically really similar to the RF35 1.8 for shooting big T-mobile commercials with 5dmk3 few years ago. If I had this R8 combined with any of the cheep RF lenses I could do the whole thing easier for a fraction of the price. Also I would like to point out actually the kit lens 24-105 non L is actually decent, especially on the FF camera for travel and even some jobs. I used for some professional assignment RF24-240 that is really affordable. I used it cause I needed a versatile set up and it was the right tool for the job and that lens paid itself in the first job. I would totally agree that your needs fall into minority regarding needs and I'm pretty sure the same goes for me, there are so many different and individual needs that is hard to be really objective. But I'm pretty sure for most of the people the basic lenses from canon will be more than enough. There are so many use cases that is sometimes really funny to listen at all the youtube really narrow and niche perspective. These cameras are made for amateurs, hobbyist and for some professionals that need a small body for backup or just don't care about the things that this camera lost compare to the R6mk2 like my girlfriend that is planing to buy it for her business.
I'll be the first to admit we are the minority for sure, but I did mention that there are a ton of people not like us that have completely different use cases for the more entry level models and there's nothing wrong with that obviously. Thanks for watching!
@@BrandonTalbot sorry my bad I was referring to what Josh said. I just noticed that I didn’t point that out in that part. I agree with your statement and logic. Now I edited it to be more clear on what I was referring.
@@TomislavMoze all good man. There's definitely a communication thing happening but all good and we appreciate the conversations and other view points.
If a camera is meant for hobbyists and amateurs, chopping off third party lenses which are generally more accessible to cash strapped hobbyists and amateurs makes no sense. Try again.
To your point about not recommending Canon as a starter, I see no issue with this. A beginner should be able to play around in a large and economically achievable lens ecosystem. Canon turfing third party makes that untenable for the beginner. I would rather recommend Sony E or the GH line and all the MFT glass the world has to offer. Shop smart, newbies.
Fantastic podcast! I was looking for something like that for years. I found a similar podcast, but it’s mostly old stuff. So thank you guys . If you could do a video assessing where does the Fuji system stand in terms of video, that would be great. How does the top of the line Fuji’s stack against the other top dogs for video, like Sony, Canon and Panasonic?
Yes, they were thinking what you won’t or can’t. There are people who are waiting for that gear that you spend hours making. The problem is a lot of people who don’t or never use these cameras are the most vocal and those who use it are the most silent. The record sales of the RP say more than UA-camrs said. The same will happen with the R8.
I agree that we are the minority here, I also agree that we don't know everything. BUT, we did say and acknowledge that. We said that there a ton of people out there that something like an M50/R50 or the R8 would be all they would ever need, and when josh asked me if they'd sell a lot I said yes.
I agree the battery is the biggest limiting factor to longer recording limits. They should have called this the R9 and then give us the same camera in an R8 in an R7 body with the bigger battery, extra dial on top and 8-10 fps in photo mode for $200-300 more. If you need a little more features then you get a used R6 with the next step up being the R6 Mark ii 😊
I think leaning it up even more on the video specs and dropping the price would have made this camera far less confusing - and more importantly needed.
well there are a lot of people that just want a smaller camera, me included and although I have a lot of bigger batteries form my R5 and R6mk2. Instead of third dial you still have the control ring on the lens, not my favourite thing but In this case it is actually useful. all of us look at the brands and cameras really subjective and presume that our logic is the best one but usually that is not the case. At the end numbers and sales will tell.
@@TomislavMoze Yeah but the R8 has a different battery than the R5 and R6mk2 so you couldn't use those batteries. We're not mad about having a smaller camera, not at all, but we're bummed we didn't get the same battery and better battery life.
@@BrandonTalbot I’m aware but having used the Rp I know that this trade off is worth the trouble of having smaller and different batteries. But I’m on the market for the smallest FF camera solution. And I think this one is currently the lightest for sure. I do wish that canon would improve a bit those batteries like they did with LP-6. But on a gimbal I can just plug it to a gimbal power output and extend the battery life anyway so combined with RF primes I see a great light combo.
@@TomislavMoze to use this battery in a photo situation it's fine, but if you decide to use all the amazing video features it has, you'll be kinda disappointed that's all I'm getting at.
I need a good camera, which i will use for Travelphotography and videography and also street photography and wildlife photography… so a very wide Usecase and for that the R8 is perfect. I dont think, the Panasonic s5 2 would come close in animal autofocus and at the same time i will get 4k 60 uncropped at this price.. most of the RF glass will have IS so i think i will be fine without IBIS…
I’ve had one foot in canon and one foot in Sony for a while now. After this last release from canon, I’ve sold off my canon body and RF and EF lenses. I’ve been waiting for either 1.4 L series RF glass or third party glass. It’s clear that Canon is doing their own thing and I’m tired of waiting. I’m going with a fx30 to pair with my A74. If canon somehow gets the lens situation together and maybe offers C-log 2 on their high-end mirrorless bodies, I can’t consider them at this point.
Right there with you Edward. I probably shouldn't wait because with each passing day I lose money if I do switch, but I wanna see what happens in 2023 and Q1 of 2024.
I think the problem is that developing lenses takes more time than developing new cameras. And RF mount is rather new and I guess they want to do the lenses right. I'm still using my original ef35/1.4L mk1 on R5 and love the image, although at first I was planing to get the RF at the end I'll just keep and use the ef 35...
Loving the podcast, just discovered you guys and the subscribed right away. Would love to see the studios, how this is recorded and spliced together. Please give us a BTS episode.
I was rlly thinking about getting the r8 for video but not having ibis is a deal breaker for me. I would be doing lots of long zooms and i really need that stabilization
@@Jensen-C hahaha - no? it all depends on what you're doing. RED just dropped a super tiny sensor version of their raptor for Wildlife shooters. Because of the reach they get with the tiny sensor and the lensing. Full frame is rad man don't get me wrong but I have 2 cameras that aren't FF and they are way better looking than my full frame camera. They have their pros and cons.
@@BrandonTalbot also do you tbink the Sony A7s2 is still viable in 2023? I was able to find a used one for 750 from someone getting rid of their whole camera gear on FB marketplace. Wondering if it might be better to get that and spend more money on a good lense instead of getting a newer/ more expensive camera body
batteries for the RP and R8 are dirt cheap and they're tiny. if you want an official Canon battery, it's $60. but if you don't mind cheap Chinese, it's $25 for a 2-pack that also comes with a charger or $30 for a 3-pack with a charger. yeah, if you want 1 battery to do everything, this is not the battery. but because they're so small and cheap, you can have a stack of them. I use my RP only for photography and the R8 is amazing as a photography camera but it has really good specs for video too. I've never like IBIS for video anyway which is why if I really want a stable shot, I'm going to use my DJI RS2 gimbal. I'm not sure why you guys are so dismissive of this camera. it shoots 40 fps in electronic. in shutter mode, it shoots the same speed as an A74 (the A74 only shoots about 6 fps in uncompressed raw). it shoots 4k60 uncropped video (which the A74 can't do either). name any camera remotely in this price range with this feature set. rather than saying this camera is a complete compromise, why not take the view of what you're getting for the price?
@@BrandonTalbot Greed. You really have to go out of your way to create a f5 at 55 in 2023. That did not exist in EF. RF is supposed to be a better mount... worse lenses?
So basically Canon is selling nerfed entry level cameras which compete solely on price to people who won’t know what they aren’t getting in the box. This is my one hot take of the day.
@@TomislavMoze And you can do that with any of a number of competitors that will *gasp* let you have AF glass from third parties. Canon isn’t going to sleep with you bro.
@@POVwithRC actually you can't at least not for the price, If you want FF 4K60 from other competitors you do really have to go double the price or even more. People chose cameras for multiple reasons, specs, or even third party glass are just some. I for instance never liked the third party glass, although now tamron and sigma are doing better I do still wanna use native glass if I'm gonna use the AF since its gonna work the best.
You guys are pissing me off with this Sony talk. I'm in the market for a new camera and you guys are muddying the water. I'm a 15 year canon user, and you guys have me considering the cheaper fX30 for video 😡
For Brendon to come out and say he wouldn't recommend anyone buy Canon makes him look stupid. He sounds like a spoilt brat because Canon won't give him what he wants...so why not just go to Sony Brendon....what's stopping you yeah that's right because Sony has it's shortcomings also. This salty-whinging Canon won't allow 3rd party lenses get over it mate.
It’s *Brandon of course Sony has its short comings. The Screens kinda blow, no shutter angle, waveform, false color - but those aren’t things that would concern most beginners. And because Sony has a huge lens ecosystem with far more affordable options they are (between the two systems) a better company to start with IMO. Wanting the same thing from Canon not just for myself but for everybody is kinda like the opposite of sounding like a whiny *spoiled Brat. Thanks for dropping by and for the comment.

Thank you so much for listening and the kind words. Thanks for the topic idea and I personally would love to take that on
@@16Stops thanks!
So many new cameras from canon haha
The price of the r8 looks so nice for a lot of people
Thomas, stoked to have you. It's a confusing, but also compelling offer. I'm sure canon will sell a metric shit ton of them.
Would it be possible for you guys to do an episode and talk about using old DSLR to do Street Photography in 2023…
Thank you
Hey Tamer thanks for the suggestion!
Third party glass? You’d be waiting forever. You do know that v canon doesn’t allow them to create lenses for their R system
can you guys do time stamps? I really like podcasts that do. Just a suggestion!
Thanks for the Suggestion!
Loving the podcast, just discovered you guys and the subscribed right away. Would love to see the studios, how this is recorded and spliced together. Please give us a BTS episode.
That’s a great idea! Thank you and thanks listening/watching!
I want 4K video so such tiny battery is annoying me even more than lack of ibis! 😤🤦🏻♂️😭
$40,000 on beef and cheese at Costco! hahaha 😂
I was rlly thinking about getting the r8 for video but not having ibis is a deal breaker for me. I would be doing lots of long zooms and i really need that stabilization
Maybe check out the R7 if that's what you need. it's the same price, has the ibis and the reach with the aps-c sensor!
@@BrandonTalbot it’s not full frame tho. Shouldn’t I have a full frame camera in 2023 by now?
@@Jensen-C hahaha - no? it all depends on what you're doing. RED just dropped a super tiny sensor version of their raptor for Wildlife shooters. Because of the reach they get with the tiny sensor and the lensing. Full frame is rad man don't get me wrong but I have 2 cameras that aren't FF and they are way better looking than my full frame camera. They have their pros and cons.
@@BrandonTalbot ah I didn’t know that’s why I’m trying to learn
@@BrandonTalbot also do you tbink the Sony A7s2 is still viable in 2023? I was able to find a used one for 750 from someone getting rid of their whole camera gear on FB marketplace. Wondering if it might be better to get that and spend more money on a good lense instead of getting a newer/ more expensive camera body
I want to start a vlogging channel what camera do you recommend?
Can you send us a video with your question? 16stopspodcast@gmail.com
batteries for the RP and R8 are dirt cheap and they're tiny. if you want an official Canon battery, it's $60. but if you don't mind cheap Chinese, it's $25 for a 2-pack that also comes with a charger or $30 for a 3-pack with a charger. yeah, if you want 1 battery to do everything, this is not the battery. but because they're so small and cheap, you can have a stack of them.
Unfortunately (at least for me) 3rd party batteries for canon have both bricked, frozen, and sometimes won’t allow the camera to turn on
@@16Stops that's unfortunate. Ive had good luck with the third party batteries for the rp. Never used the r8.

RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1? why not 55 3.5 - 210 6.3?
I'm not an engineer so I couldn't tell you.
@@BrandonTalbot Greed. You really have to go out of your way to create a f5 at 55 in 2023. That did not exist in EF. RF is supposed to be a better mount... worse lenses?
Beginners want them, not professionals...
agreed.
The R8 has no place other than in-studio video. Small battery, no IBIS, expensive RF lenses. 😒😒 Nope...
And of course photos.
@@16Stops On a tripod, yes, with a few extra batteries that won't fit your next camera should you upgrade.
So basically Canon is selling nerfed entry level cameras which compete solely on price to people who won’t know what they aren’t getting in the box.
This is my one hot take of the day.
well the AF and high frame rates will make it easy to shoot and capture a moment with beautiful aesthetics that FF brings.

It’s *Brandon of course Sony has its short comings. The Screens kinda blow, no shutter angle, waveform, false color - but those aren’t things that would concern most beginners. R50 is crap, R8 is better.
Well yeah the R8 is better, it's significantly more expensive, but the R50 certainly isn't crap. As I said, there are no bad cameras, just bad consumers/situations.
