This woman is truly special. Most people *think* they would do the same, but the truth is in crisis the majority of people act on selfish instinct and are far less brave and selfless than a heroic fantasy. In many of these shootings, the young and able get out of sight quickly and those killed are the ones who can't swiftly leave the area.

I was in an active shooter situation at a restaurant several years ago. I made two women get up and leave with us (they wanted to hide under their tiny table) and then I scooped up a little 4-ish year old child who was crying and handed her off to someone else. Then I slipped on the grease as we were being led into the kitchen (to go out the back door). I am heavy and am partially disabled and I couldn't get up. I crawled into a small booth under the table and just sat there for a while and thought, "Well, this is how it ends I guess." I shakily sent a text to my friend since she would know right where I was and could contact my family. In the end, he didn't come in the restaurant and I was able to pull myself up and go out the back where everyone was. But I realized if it happens again, that I'm probably toast. It's frightening!

School shootings were already top of mind because of American kids, school staff, and those who love them living with that threat almost every day. And we have beloved younger relatives still in school, and five beloved family members who are teachers/often work in schools.
Firearms are the #1 cause of death for kids in the US.
