Ahhhhh, Endless Legend. Like slipping back into a warm, grand-strategy blanket. Amplitude may deserve praise for Humankind, but EL will remain one of, if not THE, greatest of all time. And I think you've hit the major points quite accurately. It's impossible to truly convey just how endlessly diverse and replayable the game is until you've learned to play it, but EL truly is greater than the sum of these parts.
100%! I found it hard to describe how great it really is when all of these element come together. There's just something special about the game which only becomes clear after you've already put 100 hours in, which is a tall ask haha!
Coming back to this in 2024, EL is still the GOAT. Humankind had many interesting systems, but they never came together into a holistic whole that was better than the sum of its parts. In the last year, I've been enjoying Age of Wonders 4 quite a lot, and it also deserves a place on the all-time 4X leaderboards, but I honestly don't expect anything will dethrone Endless Legend anytime soon.
@@ericb8342 I don't understand why they even needed to make humankind when EL was already there. Quite sad the game got overshadowed by civ6 even though it came out before that. People in 2016 was still following brand images smh.
@@raptorhacker599 They made HK because they had grand ambitions for a historical 4X! I love HK for what it is: a noble attempt to elevate a beloved game genre. I actually found out about the game randomly several months ago and I'm completely hooked on the game.. From the artstyle, music, unique races, pace, etc.. Is awesome
THE best PART of Endless Legends is you can equip your Units with different items. AND you can have assimilate other small minor fractions and equip them too. there is no other 4x game where you can do that. Plus those litle quests make the game smooth and interesting too.
Never tried this title, but Endless Space was (still is?) my favorite game for years. I understand they are both set in the "endless universe" setting whatever that means.
Ive owned it for several years but only got it into it a few days ago. Never really dug into any 4X buuuut its nearly 5AM and I just beat a 6way on Hard. Mezari, expansion/supremacy victory. I stuck around after and finished the main quest. This game is fuckin' good.
Great video, it's awesome to see someone cover this game years after its release and while it has all these DLC. Motivated me to pick it up :) UA-cam needs more people like you!
I love both. It's an amazing game but I lean more to Endless Legend because it is nice to see a beautiful map rather than screen after screen. And the Sci fi spin the fantasy creatures have is quite unique.
I've got a thousand hours in ES2 and am still as exited as a child when I start a new game ! You REALLY feel that you're taking your people to discover and make a place for themselves in the vastness of deep space. I even created a sort of randomizer that decides what Mods, factions I and the Ai play, galaxy size, age, type, quantity of anomalies, curiosities, ressourcezs etc. I can randomly decide what EVERY parameter of the game is, now I just need someone who knows the game as much as I do to implement those changes without me knowing what they are, and then, TOTAL IMMERSION !!

Great overview. Despite some of my failed starts at EL I definitely want to get into it (especially since I've bought all the DLC). What faction do you think is the best choice for a new player?
Thanks, appreciate that. I'd say wild walkers are a good strating faction. Focus on stacking industry and fighting in forests and you should be golden!

I guess they wanted to make a more direct alternative/concurrent to Civilizations. But at the same time, the fantasy and lore of the Endless games is what drove me to them in the first place (that and chauvinism, I want to support French studios that are not UbiSoft or Quantic Dreams) and I guess I'm not the only one. Still they supported and released content for EL and ES1&2 for a long time and at a fair price, so I'm not that bummed out.
DO I NEED DLC TO ENJOY THIS NOW? I bought this at release, I played 15 hours, and found it indecipherable. I played Endless Space 2 for hundreds of hours, so I'm going back to Endless Legend. I don't want to invest in more DLC, but sometimes DLC is necessary to enjoy the current state of the game.
I’m frothing at the mouth at the idea of Endless Legend 2. I mean seriously they are soon releasing Endless Dungeon, and I have the feeling that it, like Dungeon of the Endless, it will fund the development of a new EL title and potentially ES3 if we get really lucky.
can anyone direct me to a video that can explain a strategy game of this complexity? Please and thank you. I feel I'd enjoy the game more if I was more familiar with "4x" (whatever that is) and all this "extreme strategy" idea.
4X stands for eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate and is just an easy acronym to categorise strategy games similar to Civilizations. It generally revolves around exploring the map to find resources, built cities to exploit said resources, build armies to protect all of that, often aggressively to come out on top of other empires doing the same. In the Endless series you've got 4 main resources: Food is used to sustain your cities population. The more you produce, the quicker your population grows. More population also means more food consumed which in turn slows down population growth. Industry is used for making buildings (town ameliorations and expansions) and units. Again, the more you have, the quicker you build. Dust is a dangerous and rare nanotech/magical substance and the main currency. Buildings and armies have a maintenance dust cost and you can also use it to buy resources, heroes and mercenary units on the market as well as instantly finish construction of city improvements or units. Influenced is used for diplomatic relations, exchanges and treaties. You need it to declare wars, peaces and alliances, also to trade resources, technologies and even cities with other factions. Science is needed to research bonuses and amelioration for your empire. The tech tree has four branches dedicated to expansion (food and Dust production) , military (defence and offence) , research (science production and strategic resources) and diplomacy (influence production, commerce and diplomatic options) . Strategic resources are rare materials you need to research and build extractors for. They're used to build certain ameliorations for your cities and equipment for your units. The rarest generally spawn the farthest from the empires starting zone. Luxury resources work similarly except they're used to grant temporary boosters to your empire as a whole. There are the basics, with the tutorial campaign and some curiosity and patience to read tooltips in game you should get a good start.

You can go into advanced options choose to avoid doublons with random selection when creating a map. It should be possible in Endless Space too iirc.
