  • Hey Everyone!
Ok, here’s a different kind of video for you!
When you go to a concert, do you go to listen to the music, or tirades from the artist themselves? Are you tired of celebrities of all sorts constantly raving on and on about things they haven’t got a real clue about?
Then this video is for you! I cover two examples of when, once in film, and once live, the Rock oriented act went too far! Way too far!
As always, if you enjoy this kind of content, we invite you to subscribe to ‘The Tribe’! And as always please feel free to share our videos, and/or if you think we’ve earned one, give us a thumbs up! It helps immensely with the UA-cam algorhythm better recognize us!
BTW: The Video proper starts at: 2:10
    Hope you enjoy!

Hey Michael. That was insightful. I always, and I mean always, dismiss any preaching from artists or actors. As you say: "Who are you to tell me!" Now it goes without saying, if the preaching is valid I might well take it onboard but on the whole I do find that an elevated status often achieved by a celebrity makes them think they have a right to spout off! Hey Ho! Oh yeah and thank you so much for the shour out! Much appreciated.

Every artist has to decide how much of their personal politics to put out there. If you do that, you're always going to alienate a certain portion of your audience. If it's important enough to you, you'll do it regardless. Evidently, Cheap Trick felt it was important enough to speak their minds. Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, & Roger Waters haven't shied away from their feelings, either, and they've done just fine. I think they understand that the majority of their fans are intelligent, people who are well-capable of critical thinking who get their message. There's also the bonus of possibly changing some hearts and minds. That makes it well-worth it to me.

In America, we do have free speech, which lets these artists (on both sides) have the freedom to say what they think. However, we as the audience also have the choice whether to support them for their beliefs or not. If you like an artist, yet everything they say goes against the grain of your personal beliefs, it is your choice whether you choose to support them further. You have that free will to ignore what they have to say, and not listen or support them ever again, or embrace the message they are putting across, and back them even more for it.
Then there’s the fact that over time, people’s positions change, and a message you may have been behind 10 years ago may not be the case now. Your own beliefs can be shaped by the influence of others, it is up to you to control how much that happens, and to agree or disagree as you choose.

I'll admit that I consider Duane Allman to be an avatar but that's completely based on what he did on those guitars. Coltrane may have been an avatar as well. The bottom line is that our favorite artists were/are human-just like us-and were/are capable of being both wise and monumentally stupid. The smartest celebrities are those who don't confuse their public persona with their private lives and my favorites are Keith Richards and Billy Gibbons. You may not believe me Michael but I am a distant cousin of George Harrison. This is a strange story. I was born in Springfield, MO in 1961 to a very musical family. My Father had his own radio show and played with Porter Wagoner, Red Foley, Tex Ritter (had lunch with him and 2 of his son's, one being John Ritter the actor in Nashville in 1972) and remember going to watch the Beatles on Ed Sullivan in 1964. I was hooked! So my older brother bought every Beatles record he could find. I learned how to sing harmonies by singing to John, Paul and George. Now for the really strange part. My Uncle did our family history in the early 70's and had found our family originally came from England. I remember thinking "wouldn't it be cool if we were related?" But I never gave it much thought until I happened to check out a book about the Beatles in 1998. That's where I read that George's Mother's maiden name was French. I told my brother about it and he started researching himself. In 2002 unfortunately after George died he found a connection. George's sister Louise had a Beatles cover band called Liverpool Legends who were based in Branson, MO so he got ahold of her. After telling her what he had found they met at a show in Tulsa, Oklahoma and she confirmed we were indeed related. I didn't meet her until 2006 but we had some great visits and I even got to get on stage with the band. She is getting older but still alive as far as I know at this writing. I'm friends with his nephew on Facebook but I've talked to him in person many times. I started playing drums when I was 8 but switched to guitar by 9 because I wanted to write my own music. I never became famous and I never wanted to but I played my butt off in bands and had some regional success but we were always doing covers. I only wanted to be a songwriter and sit back in anonymity and collect royaty check's. But people kept pushing me so I finally got in a studio in Nashville on Music Row in 2000 and made a 3 song demo. My producer shopped it around and I was supposed to play on MTV Spring Break. Just a 45 minute set but that would have put me in the spotlight. I had 30 days to get a band together but I couldn't find a bass player who could keep his stuff together and leave drugs alone and I had to cancel. I eventually got an offer out of Australia for a million dollars for a 10 song album then I was supposed to tour Asia, Europe and then come back to the State's and play warm up for better known acts on a college tour. That's where I found the evil in the modern music business and I didn't sign the contract and made a lot of people mad because they wanted some of my money. I don't regret my decision for a second. I just have a couple of small UA-cam channels and I'm not trying to stream or anything. I write all over the place. Some Rock, some Country, some just off the wall stuff. I can send a link if you want to hear some raw 4-track original music. It's rough bc I played all the instruments myself except for the one Nashville song and the vocal mix is rough but I own the DAT tape. Finally I'm so happy to have found your channel. I just found it and subscribed last week. It's my favorite UA-cam channel! Love what you're doing! ♥️☮️🎶🎶

Many of us have strong convictions and I will say everyone has a right to their opinion, however I'm not in favor of using the stage as a soapbox. Fans are there for the show and one artists opinion is not any more important than anyone else's. In many cases the fans take time off from work, sometimes drive hours and drop money on a hotel room to see you. We are in it for way more than the price of a concert ticket and maybe a band shirt. If you happen to alienate them they will not be back.

Interesting bit about an artist who never had to "shut up."
There's a 1972 press conference Michael (on UA-cam) at the Hilton Hotel prior to his Madison Square Garden concert where Elvis Presley was asked by a female reporter what he thought of Vietnam war protestors.
Presley gave a preeminent answer. Neil Young & Bruce Springsteen obviously never learned this. Elvis never tipped his own hand because he stated he was just an entertainer.
He knew the value of not alienating his liberal or conservative audience. Both had $$, asses to fill seats & buy records. That was more paramount to Elvis than spewing his opinion/agenda if he had one.
I gained so much respect for him for having handled that question so well.
Was it a cop-out? No, I was in publicity at a major network in the 70s & entertainers need people to go to their concerts & movies, and buy their products -- that's their livelihood. They should always remain neutral in public. Becoming famous should not be a license to have a soapbox on subjects you may not be experienced with.
Bad publicity can harm a career for decades & tarnish a reputation. If you make a comment prematurely it could also make you appear fairly idiotic. Cher, Bette Midler & Barbra Streisand have no clue what they're talking about ever. Never mind their dislike of Trump, their idiocy is consistent. Frank Zappa, John Denver, and Ted Nugent -- come close to making sense or at least start a viewer thinking -- because they tread carefully.
You can make a statement indirectly as Elvis successfully achieved -- "If I Can Dream," clearly supported Martin Luther King, Jr. "In the Ghetto," was clearly a commentary on the inner-city. But none of it was controversial to the point of rendering Elvis a lunatic.
I wrote for No Depression & write now for Americana Highways. Your videos & topics are covered quite well & respectfully (because if you criticize you explain why, as you did with Rod Stewart). I hope you continue to produce them.

I agree wholeheartedly! Sing your song, play your guitar and perform! That's what I paid for. I'm hip, too many in the media and journalists will ask different artists their opinion on various subjects. I think we as the public are guilty of giving credence to their personal opinion, but when they're asked in a presser they should voice their answer openly. Two of my favorites were from Elvis and Charles Barkley.
During his stay in Vegas, circa 1968, he was asked about his views on the Viet Nam war. "Ma'am, I'm just a singer on stage. I'd rather keep my opinions to myself." The reporter continued, "Do you think other artists should also keep their own opinions silent?" Pressley's answer, "That's up to them." Subject dropped.
Barkley was traded to AZ from the Philadelphia 76ers, in 1985. At the time their Governor, Meechum, didn't recognize MLK Day as a paid-off holiday and was chastised for it. "As a Black man, how can you play in a state that doesn't celebrate MLK Day?" the reporter asked. "Ma'am, I'm an NBA player. I'd rather not say. Thank you." Unsatisfied with his answer she pressed and asked again. Sir Charles is not known for his subtleness responded, "Look! I'm a PROFESSION basketball player! I'd play for the KKK if they paid me enough!" Gotta love him!

It was bad enough then having to sit through his dopey memories of having a father that didn't understand rock n roll...Then Born in the U.S.A happened and it became a big political slam on Ronald Reagan who mistook the title song as a modern day patriotic anthem... The cover showed bad taste as well. Like -America blow me -And the back saying- America kiss my ass. ...

I know what you mean. Ted Nugent couldn’t shut up about politics and the audience kept yelling “shut up and play your guitar” the whole time.

A tough topic to take on... Clapton and Van Morrison have been criticized of late for their take on the lockdowns but to me speaking out and protest etc... has always been a part of rock n roll BUT... you're right it can all be a bit self righteous and preachy if not handled with some degree of self-awareness. 👍

When we attended the Roger Waters' The Wall concert, during the performance of "Mother" he asks the question "Mother, should I trust the government?" and the projector flashes across the half-built wall the words "Fuck No!" I thought to myself that I don't need Roger Waters to tell me whether to trust the government or not, it was enough to ask the question.

I personally enjoy Crosby, Stills & Nash (and sometimes Young) but I'm really fed up with their hypocritical bullshit and political propaganda. They're not brain surgeons or architects so just stick to the music and let me enjoy it.

Excellent discussion, may I offer you a quote I read from "Alice Cooper" that supports the opinion on Rock stars being political or ideologues .
    Quote:
"When Musicians are telling people who to vote for, I think that's an abuse of power.
You're telling your fans not to think for themselves, just to think like you.
Rock N Roll is about freedom, and that's not freedom".

It’s hilarious to hear someone sharing their opinion and telling artist to shut up. Hilarious!

Country loving libertarian here. Being preached to by an eccentric artist is a big turn off. Keep up the good work!

I'm with you 💯 on this Michael. Even if I actually like the music, I just can't stand that pretentious "everything sucks, and it's all someone else's fault" BS some acts put out there. Hollywood... don't get me started-- Gotta tip my hat to Mark Wahlberg, though...he called out his "peers" for their self-important preaching. .. even many he agrees with. It's an entertainer's job to entertain, not preach.
We pay our hard-earned cash to be entertained, not dictated to. Everyone has his or her own tastes, and it sure as ____ isn't up to someone who makes a living being the world's greatest at pretending to be sincere to decide for anyone else if they are "correct" or not, even if THEIR position is actually valid.(of course, it sometimes is) I believe we all deserve to get exactly what we pay for, not what someone else thinks we should get. I believe in "live and let live." I'm enough of a realist to know I'll just have to just love em for what they are rather than hate em for what they ain't. That's the kind of peace that lets me sleep at night.
The bottom line, I suppose, would be just "keeping it real." That and backing off and letting others decide what to do with their own lives.

@siralanlordsugarIf true, I am disgusted as well, but in my defense, I wasn't aware of any of that. I merely commented on something more recent about which I am aware. I guess I had gotten a little too preoccupied with the details of my own mundane existence. Please forgive my ignorance concerning every detail of the lives of our society's most vital and important citizens 😉. Then again you do give a clear example of the abuse of privilege far too many famous people seem prone to. These people are important, damnit, we must all listen to what they say, and protect their right to be heard above us.

@ted langille it's even more scary that there's people out there who want to deny free speech. "You can speak your mind..... but only where and when we say so".

Don’t have a problem with artists offering opinions or raising awareness about stuff.. you’re free to disregard it…
