Great list! Being aware of your surroundings and where you belong is key imo. Great players don’t overplay - they find their place in the song and makes the SONG better

As a bass player in a cover band with many similar songs I have seen played in your keyboard cam videos Tip #1 is dead on. We used a sound engineer for our shows and dialing in great tone is so much easier when each instrument is playing in their normal range to allow contrast and separation of parts. Each of your tips in this video are worth every person in the band, not just the keyboardist taking into consideration.

Excellent advice! It is hard not to play … space and surprise tasty to the ears 👍

This is sound advice, and I think it universally allies to other instruments too 😊 I think Cory Wong has made some similar points for guitar - making sure not to clash with other instruments in the band, and finding out when to play and when not to.
I guess the overarching theme is figuring out what role, your instrument is supposed to fill in the given band setting, both in terms of frequencies/sounds and in the notes played, and how it is definitely not the same compared to e.g. a solo artist setting. I still need to practice it more though 😅
Thanks for the great content 😊

Thanks so much for your effort and the tons of tipps that you provide to us.
Being a hobby keyboard player in a band I struggle always with setting adequately the volume levels before gigs, because I use a lot of different sounds on my Nordstage3, even during only one piece. Solo sounds like epiano or synth, accompaniment sounds like piano, pads, strings, etc. Almost always with layers and splits. My difficulties for concerts are:
How do my solos get heard loud enough in the audience, and how am I also heard well doing accompaniment?
How do I hear enough of my instrument from the monitor speaker (we cannot use in-ears) when guitars are so loud and cover a broad frequency range?
How do you adjust the volume differences between solo sounds and accompaniment sounds?
Which Sound level meter do you use, i.e. what brand and type.
Two videos about the following topics could also be helpful: 1. A whole video only about sound leveling. 2. What do I have to watch out for as a keyboard player during sound check and how do I proceed?
Many thanks for anything that you will post!

Thanks a lot for you comment. If you have a sound technician, he will care for the most question you have. There are barely any options for you to control the correct level for the audience. This is why a sound technician should be hired. Regarding guitars the only option is to talk to them to turn down the volume. I know they won't. thats one reason I switched to IEM years ago. You should try it. If you plug the cable to a monitor or to your in ear mixer doesn't make a diffrence. I use the cheapest volume meter I could find online. I think they are all more then enough for stuff like this.
I will keep your video ideas in mind. Currently there a still many concerts ongoing so I need some time to create more videos... Thanks again!

Lately I've been considering a lot not to play in certain moments. This is something few people talk about. You're not supposed to play any and every second of the song. "The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between.".
Also, I've been struggling to level my patches. I use an AKG 414p to mix them but my keyboard sounds completely different when I'm playing live. It's tough.
Great video, man. Keep 'em comin'

      You are absolutely right.
Regarding sound levels, I can imagine you have problems. It’s about the frequency response difference between headphones and PA system. It will behave differently in every stage.

Great video. Your tips are spot on.
As a solo pianist and playing in a trio, I’ve always played bass with the left hand, but when I play with a bass player we’d often clash. It also frees your left hand up if needed. 👌

These are great tips, thanks a lot for sharing them. The one about "when not to play" made me realise I need to work on that. It is so tempting to play throughout the song but you are right that it adds so much more energy when you play more sparingly e.g coming in for the chorus. The others are very useful too. Thanks again and best wishes

My solution for balancing sounds is that I use 2 same keyboards with exact copy of patch banks and i plug them MONO into a Radial SB-2 dibox which has convert 2 mono inputs into one out, so i can send to the engineer only one channel, so i am always sure that i am in balance by myself, cos i hear only one channel for 2 keyboards in my monitor. Cos usually, engineer changes balances outside with mix outputs, and i dont feel the level change in my monitor, cos monitor levels up with input gain. The similar way can be done with a small personal sound mixer etc. And the key is, at least for me, to have 2 same keyboards and i can use my patches whichever keyboard i need. Cos different keyboard labels have different sounds in my experience as Yamaha is so muddy, and Korg is so bright etc.

Regarding soundlevels, I put on a CD or mp3. Then it is easy to set your patchlevels.

Hi.. i have a question regarding fantom 0.. i want to use my ipad as my piano module.. how can i connect it to my fantom 0 and use the fader as volume for the ipad module.. thanks

    • @thortschman
      @thortschman  Рік тому

You can connect it via USB „Computer“ Port. You need the Camera Connector Kit from Apple. You only need to make sure that you set the Fantom to the correct Midi Channel Set in the Ipad App. The sound will be only played by the Ipad. There is no possibility the have the sound from the iPad played back via Fantoms Output due to USB limitations in the Fantom.
