    Recorded with Anette on the Dark Pasion Play album of 2007. It's basically about Tuomas' feelings of depression caused by the huge fan backlash after letting Tarja go. Even the Finnish Prime Minister made a comment on the situation. It takes inspiration from Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum. It is a hugely personal song for him. Tuomas would often have the sound guys remove the vocals from his in ears. Floor wanted to take over all the operatic parts, but Tuomas wanted to keep the boy soprano at the beginning.
    At the beginning you see Emppu go ask Tuomas how he is doing. At the end ,Emppu and Marko go over to him in a show of support. Floor even looks over to him before saying, Thank You.
    The lyrics in the last section are some of the words Tuomas' mother said to him when he went home.
    Only those involved know for sure exactly what happened, and they have all moved past this. The song is no longer played live.

    This video is all about Tuomas and the band. Notice that the audience was only shown twice, at the beginning of the song, and not again. This tour ended the performing of this masterpiece. Floor was certainly the reason for that. Her "Thank you" at the end of a chapter, as it was.

    i've commented this to others before, but this always makes me grateful... grateful that Tuomas chose life over the darkness and chose to go on. in those moments, he had no idea Floor and even greater heights for himself both in the band and personally, were coming. Sometimes, it is darkest before the dawn...

      Correct, except He knew Floor since the early 2000's. Floor and After Forever toured with Nightwish in 2002. She and the Band became good friends and she went to multiple concerts through the years. That's why when Anette was fired, Tuomas said that Floor was his only choice. If she had said No, I don't know what would have happened. There is a interview of Floor and Tuomas in 2015, when he states this. Interviews on UA-cam Nightwish at Linea Rock 2015 with Barbara Caserta.

      @@MOON-SHADOW I understand they knew each other, well, but at the time of this song he didn't know she would join the band and all that would come from that... that was my point. :)

    Lovely reaction! This is Tuomas's most personal and emotional song. It is also very personal and emotional for most fans. In 2005 the band had reached a breaking point with their first lead singer, Tarja. Things between her, her husband/manager and the band had been deteriorating for some time and had reached the point where they could no longer work together. The band decided to fire her, which they did via an open letter, right after the End of an Era concert. Tarja responded with her own open letter explaining her side of things. Both letters are available on the Internet. The backlash against the band, but mostly against Tuomas, was massive and very nasty. Tuomas felt betrayed by Nightwish's fans and sank into a deep depression. He wrote this song as way of expressing and exploring all of the emotions of that time. I highly recommend you read the analysis of this song by the artist Annika Hausen. IMO it is a brilliant, master's level analysis and I think you would really enjoy it. It really dives deep into the lyrics and all the literary and psychological allusions. I would provide a link but every time I do the YT algorithms delete my comment. Just google her name and Poet and the Pendulum.
    The last part of the song, Mother and Father, gets me every time. The lyrics are actual words spoken by his parents during the depths of his depression, not allusions or praise for God. Floor perfectly channeling the pain and anguish of a mother who has lost her child. I get weepy every time. Then the words, In the Beginning, signaling the birth of a new version of Nightwish.
    This is my favorite Nightwish song, mainly for the emotional connection to Tuomas that it evokes in me. I am so grateful that he chose to write this song and share this part of himself with us. Everything about this song and performance is all about creating the emotion.

    Great reaction. I love the way Marko and Emppu move close to Tuomas at the end of the song as if to support him and how Floor looks at him tenderly for a long time after the song has finished. - For your interest, you could look online at the band's open letter, which they unexpectedly handed over to Tarja in the back room after the 2005 concert in Helsinki. In the letter, they said that Tarja has been fired from Nightwish and explained the reasons for that. And Tarja's open letter a little later, where she talked about her feelings and answered the accusations. (Open Letter to Tarja Turunen, Open Letter from Tarja Turunen)

    Well..No one here in Finland thinks that Tuomas had some love feelings to Tarja. They were friends and bandmates. Tarja and that Yoko Ono-man Marcelo just gettin greedy and IMO it was Marcelo who changed Tarja too much..

    • @missrubyphoenix
      @missrubyphoenix 9 місяців тому +2

      I think all, if not most of us believe this, that it was Marcelo's jealousy the reason why Tarja, at some point found herself stuck between her long time friend and her husband. Ultimately, Marcelo swept her away, and we were left with this heartbreakingly beautiful song

    At the very end you speak about the "tapestry of life" which is a perfect bridge to "Nightwish - The greatest show on earth" to react next to 😃
    The song is a journey from the very beginning of the solar system, building planets including earth at some point to the very first signs of life on this planet and it ends with the ending of humanity and the beginning of a new age that we still not aware of how it will be. It includes a very small part of the "evolution of music" where you can hear some references to Bach, Metallica, techno and maybe some more that I forgot. Also the song has some spoken reference lines from Richard Dawkins.
    Two versions out there: Live at Tampere: Finland, stadium, home of Nightwish, with fireworks and a few very rare instruments (in Nightwish songs) played by Troy and my personal favourite. Mostly because of the fireworks and the instruments that Troy plays there. Also the visuals on the screens in the back are better (or at least better to see) in this version and as usual they have a connection to the meaning of the song. All Dawkins references come from tape but the show is better imo.
    And live at Wembley: Inside venue so no fireworks, the instruments from the Tampere version are replaced by an e-bow played guitar and in the end the last quotes of Richard Dawkins are no quotes but actually spoken by himself on stage.
    To get the best out of both parts maybe you should watch Tampere first and then the E-bow guitar part and the ending with Richard Dawkins again afterwards.
    Anyways loved your reaction to Poet and the pendulum and hope to see you soon react to the greatest show on earth.
    All the best neighbour ... greetings from Germany 😊

This song is preceded by 'Alpenglow' which is among Nightwish's happiest songs. Then, the utter despair of 'Poet' is followed by 'Nemo', a huge crowd favorite. While I agree, the last movement is more about words his mother spoke to him while he secluded himself at their home, which inspired him to move forward, secular is not atheistic. There are references to God in other parts of this song and others.

      @rnowak85 10 місяців тому +4

      @@kentk2215 Yes but those are literary references, not religious. Tuomas has made his feelings on religion quite clear in interviews and songs like Weak Fantasy and Tribal. If you go back to The Carpenter from their first album you can see Tuomas questioning religion. I don't think I have ever heard him call himself an atheist but he is at best agnostic and highly skeptical.

    • @kentk2215
      @kentk2215 10 місяців тому +1

      @@rnowak85 I have to disagree, in part. “I have but two faces. One for the world, and one for God” is not a literary reference. He has also written of heaven and God in non-literary terms in the past. He has indeed been very clear on his thoughts towards religion, as a man-made entity, but I would not say less so on spirituality, and the possible existence of God. He has been quoted that he does not even consider religion to be bad, but rather the human interpretation of it. He has also said in the past, that he believes himself to be a “spiritual person”, whatever that may mean. His secular stance seems to be, “I don’t know”, and he will believe in what science can tell us, “until we know better” and he won’t be adhering to any religion in the meantime. Certainly, one can still believe in a higher power and not be religious in any way.

    The fact that Tuomas was ever in love with Tarja will probably always remain a rumor, because as far as I know, no one involved has commented on it.
    I stick to confirmed facts. Tarja was fired because she was increasingly under the influence of Marcello and did not attend rehearsals or travel with the band. She also said that she didn't need the band anymore and that the upcoming album would be the last one for her with Nightwish. When she finally demanded that the band cancel a sold-out concert because she had to rehearse for a solo concert, it was finally enough and she was fired.
    The shitstorm that now broke over Tuomas from the Tarja fans plunged him into severe depression and he even thought about suicide. But in order not to actually commit it, he wrote this song and committed suicide in it.

    Hi Pandora; Maby the story is much more complicated than said here. Unfortunately there are 2 camps here; 1= Tuomas was in love with Tarja 2=( This is in the letter they wrote as a band to her) Tarja behaved like a DIVA . This is ofcourse short versions of the whole story. All this GOD stuff,i know Tuomas is at least agnostic or maby even a athëist and uses god references more as a metaphor. "The greatest show on earth and weak fantasy" give maby more a insight of tuomas and as i understand also the other band members how they think about religion , it surely are not songs that "glorify"any religion or gods.😉🤘

    Great reaction. One thing I love about Tuomas is that he became depressed and was able to turn that pain into a masterpiece, but when he got happy again he was also able to turn his joy into a masterpiece! I'm sure you'll get to _The_ _Greatest_ _Show_ _On_ _Earth_ sometime. Also, I've said it before, but your lyrics-first style is very well suited to reacting to _Last_ _Ride_ _of_ _the_ _Day_ (Wacken or Masters of Rock would be my picks) - the lyrics are amazing, but are often overlooked because of the music.
    Regarding Tuomas and Tarja, not everyone thinks he had romantic feelings for her. She was certainly his muse, and he certainly loved her; but evidence is ambiguous on what type of love was involved. For instance, I believe he has given a different story concerning the origins of _Wish_ _I_ _Had_ _An_ _Angel,_ one which actually makes it a less uncomfortable listen (at least for me).

    There are some other minor but interesting differencies in the lyrics between the demo and album versions. The demo is on YT, with lyrics, on the descriptions I think. The demo gets many very positive comments.
    There are some live versions on YT with Anette. I think Wacken 2008, if my memory serves me right, is not bad at all. Mexico City 2015 with Floor is a good one as well, even thoug it was without the spectacular backdrop. The song works just great without it. To me it is like training for Wembley.
    The then Prime Minister of Finland, Matti Vanhanen, attended the End of an Era concert 2005 in Helsinki Finland, Tarja's last with Nightwish. Some years later in an interview he was asked about Nightwish and what happened back then. He was very diplomatic, didn't take sides. He said he was concerned about the future of Nightwish. Would it be the end or could they replace Tarja with another female front? That wouldn't necessarily be easy. Or they might go on with Marko on vocals alone. But that would be a big change.
    The owner of the Finland's biggest daily newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat, and The Sanoma Group, the late Aatos Erkko, said he understood the decision to fire Tarja. Might have been the business man in him. You have to be able to make difficult decision when needed, for better future.

    This is total bullshit from a Tarja fan. Tuomas had already been in a relationship with his current wife for a long time. Tarja was his muse and best female friend.

      Tuomas met his wife in 2009, years after Tarja and Nightwish had split.

    This was nightwish's best years of music. Basically from 2000 to 2010 ish Tomas wrote his best stuff. Hopefully this next album goes back to that mid 2000s style cause I really didn't like the last album.

    Only one comment - Tuomas is an ateist, just like the rest of the band - therefore, please be careful when you read others personal interpretations of this masterpiece.😉

    UNLIKE THE REST WHO ARE PRESENTING A REACTION OF STOP START EVERY TEN TO TWENTY SECONDS AND SO TURNING THE SONG INTO A TWO HOUR EVENT .
