Thank you for your great questions! The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends waiting until your baby is 6 months old before introducing sunscreens! Before your baby is 6 months old and able to Use sunscreen safely it’s important to think about providing their sensitive skin with plenty of shade! They sell hats and clothes that are UV protectant that you can purchase for your baby for sun protection before and after they turn 6 months old!
Once your baby is 6 months old you want to look for a good “mineral based” sunscreen! My favorite brand and what I use on my son after researching for the best non-toxic mineral sunscreen is by the brand “tru baby!” As you will see many baby sunscreens are around 30 SPF because this is the best blend of protection and also making sure it is non-toxic for baby! Higher SPF doesn’t always mean better when it comes to toxicity on our little ones! You also want to be using UV protectant hats and clothing along with the sunscreen and shade! What is sunscreen used for?in a bby cause this my first time of hearing about sunscreen and this my first time of having a child.
Great Question! A baby’s skin is very sensitive - much more sensitive than an adults! But sunscreen isn’t safe to use on a baby until they are 6 months or older because their skin is so sensitive and many sunscreens contain different chemicals that aren’t safe for young babies! It’s important until your baby turns 6 months old to protect their sensitive skin from the sun by giving them shade, limiting their time in direct sunlight and finding clothes that have “spf” or “sun protectant” labels for anytime you plan to be outside in the direct sun for extended periods of time (think at a pool, or the beach or even a backyard bbq without a lot of shade!). One of the main reasons it’s so important to think about protecting your young baby’s skin from the sun is that research shows us that the risk of melanoma (skin cancer) is highest when getting sunburn at a young age/early years of life versus adulthood. My baby will be born in winter. Any tips for getting outside in the cold weather
Thank you for watching and Great Question! It’s definitely harder with our babies born in the winter to get that outside time but even if you can get outside for just 10 minutes it’s great for your baby! (Of course this is very dependent on where you live- if it’s so cold outside that you yourself would be uncomfortable even when dressed appropriately within seconds to minutes then do not stress about getting outside those days) instead you can simply open all of the curtains or window coverings in your home and stand by the windows with your baby letting them feel the sunlight on their skin and describe to them the sun and the outside world out loud in detail to them!
If it is cold but you are able to dress yourself comfortably and tolerate that time outside (think even just 15-20 mins in the winter) make sure to dress your baby similarly to you! Similar amount of layers to what you are wearing and if you can remember- put a little hat on their head since a lot of heat loss occurs through the head! Depending on what kind of stroller you may have they do sell different winter covers for the infant attachments/prams for the strollers that act like a insulated blanket and you can zip your baby in the pram leaving their head and face visible to you at all times! Look for a good winter coat in the sizing you may need for your baby during the coldest months- many times in the 0-3 month and 3-6 month sizing they are full body coats- and look like little snow suits! They cover your babies arms and legs and you can zip baby in them and many times the sleeves fold over to cover the hands! I will link some examples so you have an idea of the different items I am suggesting and I’m sure they are sold by all different brands!
