  • No sailing unfortunately. This was a reposition day to make the following day easier. I've put about 12hrs on the engine all together now, so feeling more confident in it. Famous last words...

Enjoying your videos, just a couple of suggestions. If you’re short handed and only want to use one sail, use the main. The main can get you out of trouble if your engine quits when entering or leaving an anchorage and will keep the boat riding steady in a lumpy sea, it will also allow for hands free tacking as it’s on a boom/ traveller. When you are raising/ dropping anchor, picking up a mooring etc release the main sheet and the boom will swing preventing the boat from sailing away while you are at the bow. On a safety note, when pulling the chain in you put a wrap around your hand, that’s a good way to lose a hand, don’t ever wrap a line or anything around your hand. Again, really enjoying your trip, it definitely brings back memory’s of when I was learning to sail. Cheers from Canada.

    Awesome brother... another successful voyage!
Next time your raising the anchor, sit on your arse, spread your legs and you'll have better leverage pulling it up, won't pull you off balance and it'll be alot better on you're back ⚓

If you ever have trouble pulling up chain again, use your cockpit winch.
I'm still on the side of having all chain (you mentioned people advised you at the start) you don't NEED it, but its better. That's all I was trying to say on your other video. Whatever suits you, definitely a pain trying to haul up by hand.

I think the seaweed comments might be right, but does prompt a systems check which is always good. A good days motoring is a great confidence booster also gets all the motor systems lubed and smoothed so that part of the boat is definitely fine for now. Also good for batteries etc. Self steering for a single hander is the best thing out on my last boat it almost never came off I used it to hold the tiller even at anchor (turned off) I would even adjust it so the tide held the boat at anchor at best angle to the wind :)

just came from ship happens as they recommended you and I am glad they did so I've subscribed and liked and will watch all your videos to catch up they look good by the way your not an idiot you have to start somewhere why not into the deep end first nothing wrong with that as long as you do a bit of studying and rules of the waves and get a radio licence and away you go and always remember back up important stuff like radios flares spare outboard in case your engine fails things like that. you will have your ups and downs but stick with it when the good weather comes you will reap the benefits.

I just found out about your project from the "Ship Happens" channel, and am looking through your initial repair videos. Haven't caught up to your launch yet, but will soon.
Your project is bringing back memories of getting my project sailboat ready and safe, and learning how to sail her.
    A bit about me:
I am a fellow in his mid-60's, fairly mechanically and electrically handy, now semi-retired and living in the Portland, Oregon area in the USA. Still not "independently wealthy", so I am still doing all my own maintenance and repairs.
I bought my 23 foot sailboat as a project boat about 35 years ago and went through her stem to stern: Rebedded everything, installed a fresh/potable water bladder and electric and manual pumps, installed a stern pulpit and set up a main traveler on it, ran all the lines aft to a multiple rope clutch with a shared winch for single handling, installed new lifelines and netting around the deck so my then 3 year old daughter would be safe and stuff wouldn't accidentally roll off the deck, and ran the old stainless lifeline on the center of the deck fore and aft as deck level safety line for hanking on a safety harness when needed. I replaced/upgraded all my running rigging, and went through the standing rigging (which was fine), and had a sail loft inspect and repair my sails. I also redid most of my wiring and lights and put in a double battery bank. My boat is not ocean-worthy, but is now fit for "gunkholing" around the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands which are north of me. Most of my sailing is day/evening sailing on the Columbia River around the Portland Oregon area, where I live.
I bought a used multi-axle trailer for her and refurbished it, so I can transport her to the Puget Sound or various lakes for vacations and longer trips. It's a lot faster and more convenient than having to sail or motor her up the Pacific coast to get there from Portland. I have also used the boat as a camper on the trailer when traveling to sailing locations farther away. It also allows me to winter her at home on the trailer instead of having to pay for a slip year-round. Having her at home on a trailer makes maintenance and upgrades a lot easier and convenient as well....
Since your boat has a narrow beam (7.5 feet) , it would probably be legal to trailer her as well. (In the USA, the width limit for trailering without a special "wide load" permit is 8 feet, and I would think the UK has similar rules.) Something to consider....
I had a few thoughts regarding your 12v electrical system which I hope are helpful:
    1. Consider using the empty holes in your switch panel for led indicator lights so you will know at a glance in the cabin what is powered. 12v ones (with appropriate resisters already installed) can be ordered very inexpensively from China, and they draw almost no power. (You could leave the cabin light circuit without one as you'll likely leave a cabin light switched on so when you flip that switch it will come on). I would also consider having a main on-off switch on the panel with an indicator light as a quick way to shut all circuits off. (However, you will want to leave the bilge pump switch wired direct as it will have a float switch and you'll likely want that to stay on all the time. The engine panel will also be wired directly to its separate battery).
    2. Consider Installing a dual battery bank high current selector switch that will allow you to select your house bank separately, connect the house circuits to the starting battery in an emergency, or interconnect them together to allow the shore power charger or motor alternator to charge both in parallel.
    3. Definitely replace all bulbs with LED's. They will draw much less power, and will last much longer. (I prefer warm white for cabin lighting as it is easier on the eyes in the evenings. Cool white or daylight white for all other white bulbs -- you want them bright and noticed.)
    4. I would also consider upgrading a couple of your cabin lights to be dual bulb -- one red and one white. The red option will allow safe cabin illumination at night when sailing so you won't ruin your night vision when you duck into the cabin for something. With some creativity, you may be able to modify some of your existing cabin lights to have a selector switch and a second bulb socket. That's what I did with mine.
    5. I think you may be missing a proper anchor light, which is white 360 degrees all-around. (Unless your masthead light has a white bulb that shines all-around when the red/green are turned off) These are VERY important when anchoring because you want your boat to be visible and known to be at anchor at night so your boat doesn't get rammed by another boat while at anchor.
    6. If and when you rewire the mast lights, plan for a set of spreader lights as work lights to illuminate the deck.
    7. Add a cigarette lighter socket on a separate circuit to the cockpit so you can plug in a powerful hand held spotlight for use at night when navigating unfamiliar waters. You may find it convenient for other uses too.
I echo Randy's warning about NEVER wrapping a line or chain around your hand -- it is far too dangerous. If you need to wrap a line to get a better purchase on it -- use a winch -- that's what they are for. For the chain, you might want to look for a small used manual chain windlass to help haul up your anchor.
I hope this is helpful. Keep up the good work!
    Philip

but just chug along and don't push the engine it'll go on forever if its not pushed hard, but well done, and i'm impressed anchor out but 2meters still to drop before low tide,

Many, many years ago I bought a Contess 26 on the south coast with the plan to sail her back to Scotland. I made it but not without some difficulty. First she had a Vire 2stroke engine with an attitude. Secondly all my sailing up until then had been in home waters. Third this was back in the day of no GPS, plotter, or autohelm. There was a lot of 20 miles forward 10 miles back, I hadn't quite got the knack of channel sailing.. When confronted with the wind over the tide at Lands End it took 5 attempts over 2 days to get round the corner. I am in my seventies now and despite everything I still think of my little Contess more fondly then eny other boat I have had. Good luck, you will love her even though you will get very wet, rain or shine.😃

When doing the anchor sit on your bum with legs on the pull pit. You can pull from your body rather than just you arms. You can also fit a bouy and tipping line. Had a pull up a massive anchor by hand in a storm once. Your doing good work. If you’re ever in the Solent again, anchor off by cowes, the ice cream boat comes around in the summer

Just a suggestion, when hauling the chain I find it useful to have a couple of chain hooks on lines to give time to rest. Make the line fast to the cleat, pull in chain and put the hook on. You can then rest, let the boat break out the anchor or pull in some more chain knowing it will not run back out.

If it is a cone type clutch it is easy to adjust. Google it for best advice. Usually you undo 2 bolts and tap a plate forward or back. This moves the cone to have more bite. Anyway google is your friend. Ps when you waved at Lymington I would have waved back. I meant to add that I live just off the street where the first contessa was ever built. It is now a Baptist Church.

It's not obvious, but unless you have something heavy around the prop, revs will rise when it's fouled. If you think about it, those blades have been carefully designed and sized to make as much thrust, and so do as much work on the water as possible. Disturbing that with fouling can only make the prop less efficient and so easier to turn. Not saying that was definitely your problem, but it is one explanation.

Catenary is the shape of a cable under gravity between two points, like a suspension bridge.

Sounds like you caught some debris (weed or manmade junk) and turning off let it fall away.. Oh and good call on the ferry!

As somebody else mentioned. A bit of weed temporarily on your prop would cause a rev increase and thrust decrease. So probably not a mechanical issue.

As a cliche. I have seen a video on marine transmission repair (1 or 2 cylinder), slipping due to clutch wear, just new plates abd a balancing adjustment required. Now to find it.😂😂😂🎉

Salt & Tar episode 194 covers a marine transmission repair. Bigger than yours but should be relevant. Sorroy for any binge watching this link causes. Love your content dude 🎉😂❤.

@@BumblingSailor prop slipping due to turbulent water, revs go up, if you drop engine revs down the prop grips again and back to normal. Not saying that happened to you… but one possibility.

I quite enjoy it. I don't get the high protein ones or anything. It compares ok to replacing a meal cost wise, shelf stable, long life. I think it's great for sailing. I have 3 per day on passage, which is an unsustainable amount of calories really but I need to lose weight so win/win.
