- Two days dinghy cruising in the Bay of Biscay, sailing to a remote rock at the northern extremity of the Archipel des Glénan, for a night at anchor.under the boom tent. My crew member is a Geordie musician, and we discuss music and his early life working in the shipyards of the Tyne, as we enjoy the peace of the Ile aux Moutons.

AVEL DRO
Do you want a boat like mine?
Avel Dro is an Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by Les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994. I bought her in France in 2003 to import her into the UK, and more recently returned her to France again. The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany in the early years of the twentieth century - hence her simple boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (sometimes controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are relatively common in France. Modern Ilurs are however slightly different internally from mine, as they have more built in buoyancy. The name Avel Dro is Breton, Avel = wind, Dro = to turn - so it means a whirlwind.
Length 4.44 m
Sail area 12.2 m²
Beam 1.70 m
Draught 0.25 / 0.86 m
Displacement loaded with camping and sailing gear 400 kg
Design category C3

BREXIT AND BOATS
Since January 2021, when Great Britain (but not Northern Ireland) left the European Single Market, if you buy a boat in France or elsewhere in the EU with the intention of importing it into the UK, you are liable for VAT and other duties on the import - even if it is second hand. Similar charges will be due if you take a British boat the other way. This does not apply to a boat taken to another country for a brief holiday, however. - Навчання та стиль
There is no boat but small boat, and Roger is his prophet.
So disrespectful and frankly not very clever. Prophet and boat doesn't make any sense
In this overly complicated world we could all do with a dose of roger barnes messing about on boats. Merci Roger!
Just a quick update about 'The Dinghy Cruising Companion' by Roger Barnes. It is a great mix of the technical, well explained in his straightforward friendly manner, with diaries of individual sails (some genuinely thrilling), great photographs and lots of anecdotal memories,- written in a conversational way that echoes the videos. He is still in England but venturing to the Île de Sein and bay of Douarnenez. If you sample the book try book you will be delighted. In brief it is a must for anyone who loves this channel and boats. I did not know what to expect. The book is enchanting.
Respect for leaving the gybe clip in, many would have left that on the cutting room floor.
Another excellent video, thanks Roger.
Thanks for another wonderful water sojourn, a calming and healing respite in this insane world.
Hi Roger,
You videos are great and nostalgic for me, especially the lug sail and the seagull outboard.
With both of these I made my first voyage, aged 12, in 1969, with my father and his cousin.
Lovely to see you sailing again roger.its always a great treat to watch.and hope the house is going well and eager to see the update.warm regards robert.
Your videos are always a wonderful break from the problems of the world! Thanks for all you do, France sure is a beautiful country!
It is lamentable that so many of us are now excluded from living in France after so much time being able to do so. I lived and worked in Holland (including a year living in a boat) and France but feel so aggrieved that we can now only spend 90 days in every 180 and must take our leave from the EU for 90 days. Having lived in the EU also now means your UK state pension is somewhat lower as consequence
I am sure that is aggravating for sure! Beautiful country!
Thank you for this video.
I was nearly frighted to see Roger Barnes in the water for the third time ! But you recovered just in time.🙂
I am always impressed when Roger jumps into the water in trousers and sneakers like it's nothing
And this time he even gets in the car (like it's normal to do so)🩳 with wet shoes and socks?
My mum and dad were Gateshead, dad RIP worked for Vickers Armstrong. He told me many stories about life in the shipyard. I miss him hugely. He also ran for Gateshead Harriers, Brendon Foster was 2 years older apparently and dad remembers he was always the star runner. Great music in this episode Roger, thanks for all that you do. You give us all a glimer of hope.
Ah! Thank you. That’s very kind.
@RogerRoving might have a small sailing mission this weekend Milford Haven to Gosport wish me luck !
You have made me want a vessel like yours
It is everything Roger shows it to be! Make it happen, I did - same rig! So simple, so functional and so spacious for 14'6". Find one and do it - rlk
You had quite a moment there at 31:45.
I did the same with a friend last summer, but did'nt react as quickly as you, so our boat filled with water and we were unable to get it out again as the swell were too high. So we wawed in distress to another boat, who in turn called for assistance from the nearby harbour. But it was a fun experience.
Keep them coming!
Love from Denmark
A practice capsize on a hot sunny day is a great lesson in how much water these open hull designs can hold. Francois' modern kit Ilurs have quite a bit of inaccessible bilge below the deck. One day I'll get a pu.o and battery!
Another inspiring and calming video. Thanks Roger! I was very impressed with how you handled your little jib incident. Kevin's calm and cool reaction was very admirable.
Thankyou Roger for sharing these wonderful times with us,Your creative content is so enjoyable.
Another wonderful episode that refreshes and rejuvenates all who watch and enjoy! Thank you again Roger!
Love it ! Great to have a Geordie representing Newcastle. Hoy a hamma owa heea hinny Marvellous 😂
Howay the lads!
Your boat slips along beautifully.
Kevin's Geordie accent is wonderful. Rockabilly bass player too. Hope we see him again.
Ha way, man! Get the anchor up! Newcastle lads wear shorts all year round! It could be minus 5 on the terraces and ice on the pitch, and they'd all be there in t-shirts 😅
I just have this to say to Geordie. Bass is the place brother. I’ve been playing for 56 years and had a great career doing so in Michigan. Love your videos Roger. Good sailing sir!
Nice one Dennis, I've been playing for nearly 50 year myself

The low register is where i live, Stingray 4 string from the 90's and a Gull dinghy 2795 , both old skool classics Peace !
Jeez Roger, I nearly dropped my coffee when the jibe turned a bit curly!
I have never set foot on a sailboat. Yet, your videos and laid back manners make me want to try my luck at this. I am old, but I am willing to learn. A dinghy might be the best option for me.
Another great video Roger. Thank you for having us along on the voyage.
The “accidental” gybe reminds me why I like a nice heavy keel below me. 😂 Another entertaining video. Keep up the good work 👍
These moments in life are so special. I am working hard to get my boat ready for it's adventures can't wait. Thanks for the vlog Roger. Oh! the mast repair was very good too.
Thank you for leaving in the excitement on the gybe. I think it proves how stable the Ilur design is that the drama was over very quickly. I never really got to grips with gybing when learning to sail 40 odd years ago !
The Dinghy Cruising Companion by Roger Barnes (online bookstores, etc). I found this book through being interested in the history of the ile aux Moutons, the Bay of Douarnenez & about Ys, and all the legends. Most of you probably know about the book. It is now en route (from a very large online retailer). This is not an ad by the way, I just love boats and this channel is so good for re-setting against the worries of life.
Oh, silly me,,,,I've got your friends name wrong! "if only people knew what you can do in a sailing dinghy" has got to be the understatement of the year!
Beautiful, gentle, quiet and simple….captures the essence of what’s important. Thanks.
Fantastic Roger! You are inspiring a whole new way of recreation. I’ve sailed much when I was younger and had not for years, this summer I bought a little glass dinghy and I’ve had a delight in returning to that joy of my youth. I took a four day cruise this fall and was surprised at how little I actually needed and much of it was secure in the cuddly. A very good time indeed. Thank you
That black and white stripped flag does the job of satisfying your Geordie musician friend and the populous that is Normandy.
He takes the Breton flag to Newcastle United matches for that reason.
Merci Roger ! Une nouvelle vidéo d'une belle navigation près de nos côtes: superbe !
Brings great memories of sailing in Morbihan. Unfortunately age has compelled me to leave those pleasures behind but I can vicariously enjoy your adventures. Thank you.
what a team kevin did brilliant thanks roger
Another great video Roger and friend,
Beautiful scenery and relaxed sailing ⛵👍
From my quiet woods in Oklahoma....how wonderful to go sailing with you and Geordie today! It just takes me away!
Love this sailing, its so pure.thanks for the videos, chears
Your videos are very relaxing It’s always a joy to watch them thank you
Lovely, as always.
Another lovely short film. Thank you😊
Allways nice to watch your sailing
Great video Roger many thanks, keeps me focused on getting my little boat ready for our first jaunt.
Refreshing as always. Thank you 👍
Roger ! Enjoy the out n beyond in your tiny sailing dinghy . Love 💕 the sound of the waves, wavelets, birds n creaking of the boat as well. So restful n relaxing Mate. Cheers Nick
I was enjoying the romance, and thinking how nice it was that you invited companions along...how enjoyable that must be... and then I remembered the Loo Bucket 😊
Thanks for another great video!
Thanks again Roger for wonderful video!
Fantastic, Mr. Barnes! Outstanding. :)
Lovely.
Loved it- great video.
Its great when you can share an adventure together. Thank you for bringing us along. And i am glad you didn't fall over board.
I had this video in my "watch later" playlist since it's out and i'm glad i did not skip it. Another lovely adventure on a lovely dinghy. Thank you for the upload Roger !
I love coming along with your adventures. You show us a slowed down simpler way to enjoy life on the water. I wait for your next excursion with worms on my tongue (bated breath)
oh, I love it! Keep on sailing`....thanks, Stefan
Lovely stuff Roger. Having sailed those very waters earlier this year before meeting you in Duarnenez, it really takes me back.
Sr. Roger sou um entusiasta dos seus vídeos, com eles estou aprendendo a gostar cada vez mais dos pequenos veleiros clássicos. Obrigado pelos vídeos. (Santa Catarina - Brasil)
…and wise words to go with it. Thanks
Good and quick reaction a few seconds from capsizing ! Bravo !
Great video Roger. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful trip Roger. Thanks.
Thanks you Roger.
Great show Roger.looking forward to seeing how your home is coming on.
Beautiful place. Enjoyed the details of how you camp on this video.
A great little trip, thanks for taking us along. Josh
Nice one boys
Hello, just ordered your book from amazon. Thanks for the great videos that help keep dreams of sailing in my eye...
Thanks for filming your adventures in your dinghy. Inspiring episode.
Loved it Roger...simply the best, cheers Paul
Wonderful relaxing trip Roger, many thanks..
Good to see the mast repaired and you are back sailing. I bought one of those “body warmer” buoyancy aids since seeing you using them in earlier videos. It confuses my local sailing club but it’s a great bit of kit and unlike many has a crotch strap!
I'm glad to see your mast is shipshape again. Party on
I do like that song you use for your outro. Thanks Roger.
Very good and refreshing Rodger and Kevin.
Thank you for taking us along! Ironic you were talking about your vest at the beginning of the video and then nearly testing it later one in the video.
Cracking video. Makes we wish I had a boat; and could sail.
Thank you, Roger, very intrestin !!! 😊👍
Thanks Roger. Rather lovely video, including that rare for you almost oops as you jibed.
Indeed, how nice to be out in nature; waves birds fish and the like. Magic. I do believe that you are making a real difference to people’s lives. Well, mine anyway here in faraway Hobart. Need to build my grandson a boat. Cheers mate.
Inspired. I’m off to put my sailing dinghy in the water.
Thank you, Roger.
Beautiful
Charming. Thank you for sharing, sir. It did occur to me that the stars shine brightly, out there in the Îles.
They're called Geordies after the mining lamps they used, designed by George Stevenson (the railway engineer).
Hello Roger, lovely to see your video. Much enjoyed. All good wishes to you and to your Dad. Alan B, formerly of Waverley, Ilkley.
Well done for NOT editing out the brief excitement of the gybe and wet backside. It’s good to remind all of us that it’s easy to tip in with a small boat, so we had better be prepared, and keep our wits about us. As always, I feel almost as refreshed watching your videos as I do after a day or two in a small boat. Thanks.
Glad to see you both in good health, Many others are not fairing as well.
Very relaxing watching you two sailing, until you almost rolled out of the dinghy, wow😂
Great adventure videos, thanks.
Lovely video, slightly more adventurous than my inland sailing, but inspirational none the less at a time when age is threatening to reduce my sailing hours. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who occasionally lets a jibing standing lug (Drascombe Dabber here) get out of hand!
That Gybe was hilarious; thanks for not editing it out.
Any crew that concentrates on feeding and watering the skipper and steers the boat can speak in tongues as far as I am concerned! Excellent video as usual Rog! Made more so by the close shave! Thanks.
@Roger Barnes Roger! Missed you. It's so much colder now. Yes, paying for the Slipway... a wizz! Repairing the mast - wow, thought you would have to buy a new one.
Thanks for posting Roger it's been awhile
Isle aux Moutons (F) twinned with Isle of Sheppey (UK)
Gybe O nearly became Gybe Overboard. Don't do that to completion when you' re solo!
Lovely video. Very calming. I guess the water will get too cold for all that wading but both of you look to be pretty hardy.
One of the best of your adventures. I can almost smell that seaweed piled thick on either side as you hauled the boat into that man- made cut.
Fantastic to share this with you guys. What a lot you can do in a tiny boat, well-found and handy, with one eye on the weather.
I like your Geordie mate, bass man. What band, what music? A bass player is tuned in to the rhythm of life, that's it!
Nick.
Glad you enjoyed it
Im the bass player for a UK Band Bessie and the Zinc Buckets, also bass player for French Rockabilly band GASOLINE, I also play in a duo with my wife and we are called "Frog on the Tyne"
As usual this has brightened up my Monday! Fucking love your videos Roger!
A lovely little voyage, a couple beers with a good friend and a most graceful gybe recovery! Santé.
I think the beer the night before may have added to the near mob.
Bonjour Roger, que s'est-il passé, tu as failli tomber à l'eau..... la force du vent lors du changement de bracelet t'a attrapé... hahaha bonne vidéo !! Salutations de Buenos Aires, Argentine
Great video
Nice one mate
great stuff, you make me jealous cheers
Love the video, just ordered yOur book!
