Fly Fishing for Wild Brown Trout in Spring | Northumberland

  • It's that time of year again when the weather is too rough for sea fishing, so with the need to just do some fishing, I grabbed my fly fishing tackle and headed out into the hills of Northumberland to try and catch wild brown trout. I was trying a new area that was hopefully sheltered from the incessant winds but still held a fish or two, after a fair bit of trekking, wading and casting, I finally found the illusive trout.

    I feel your pain. I was born near Rothbury so I spent most of my childhood fishing the Coquet. My wayward uncle used to take me to other small rivers in Northumberland. Have a look at the Breamish, Aln and Coe Burn. Some truly beautiful pools (and surrounding countryside) amongst those streams !
    It's too late in the year now but, if you want a challenge, go for winter Graying on the river Till. Milfield has some fantastic runs and pools, as do the Ford and Etal stretches. Trotting a maggot or fly fishing with a Red Tag or Peter Ross is where it's at :)
    Thanks for another beautifully shot video - it helps to live vicariously when you can't get out yourself :)

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  2 роки тому

      Glad I could take you along with me. I've fished the lower stretches of the Aln a fair bit, but haven't tried the others you've mentioned, I've always wanted to fish the Till but it's by appointment only and closed on Sundays, so difficult for me to access. I've fished for grayling a fair bit on the Derwent, and was actually what got me into fly fishing. I'll stick those other venues you've mentioned on the list to visit and glad you liked the vid👍🎣

    That must have been heartbreaking losing 2 fish in the same pool, good idea to wait a while n try again, I watched something about catching steelhead trout and the guy doing it said if a fish goes for a take and misses wait the amount of time it would take to tie a fly on and the fish should be back sitting where it was "hopefully ".

    Cracking video. I've had similar experiences of being snapped off when using bigger flies such as Daddies and Mayflies and I'm fairly sure it's because the flies are too heavy for the tippet and the tippet is weakened during casting. I now use the rule of dividing the hook size by 3 to give me the required tippet diameter, for example a size 12 hook should be fished using a 4x leader. Hope this helps, tight lines!

    Eyup Nathan. I've got very fond memories of being up that way with an old mate of mine a long time ago. We walked the Pennine way and had to finish it in 11 days 'cos he joined up on day 12 so we didn't have time for me to linger as long as I would have liked to look for fish. They say you can't cross the same river twice but I have a sneaky feeling you'd like to go back for that fish. I'm looking forward to part 2. I'll sithi after, Dave.

    Lovely trip out. Like Taran I grew up fishing rivers like the Aln and Breamish and surrounding hill streams. Wonderful memories. And I have never managed to get a river fish to rise to a daddy, never mind a daddy five months out of season ;-) PS Holderness has got bass and cod coming out at the moment as the seas are up.

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  2 роки тому +1

      It was put of season but used the daddy as an indicator since first fish hit the bobber, and the daddy was the only thing I had big enough to float the nymph I was expecting them to hit. Partridge and orange, black spider, sooty olive size 16 - 14 wet flies and fish down stream wet fly, deadly in the hills early season in a wind, 5lb line trout are hungry early season and not line shy. 3lb line is madness in rocky streams probably damaged nylon on a rock or the back cast.

    Can be hard going early doors Nathan, klinkhamer with a small pheasant tail or hares ear nymph under it would have been my approach. Lovely looking bit water though and it would be nice on a summers evening.
    Like your set up, those rods are lovely to look at and fish with. What are your Polaroids ? I need a new pair and they look decent. And your wading boots ? They look different 😂 I'm guessing they are hiking shoes ? If so how do you find them as mine are felt soled and no good for walking and climbing banks.

      They're actually Scarpa running shoes with their lining taken out. All of the wading boots I've tried seem to absorb a load of water and weigh a ton, crap grip too. I've used these shoes for years, in salt and fresh water, and on the yak with no bother. Bit tatty now though
