I expose by eye with gamma assist or with a monitoring LUT and don’t really look at the multi metering. I set zebras at 65 for skin tones with there’s a subject and at 94 when there isn’t to maintain clouds and highlights
Works for me also. I don’t see it practical to use an extra monitor when you’re on vacation and traveling light. These monitors are helpful, but not for everyone.
Thank you so much for this amazing video. I could not believe how some creators that are technically very brilliant could suggest such an arbitrary rule. And unfortunately most new filmmakers love these 1 size fits all rules rather than understanding and adjusting on a case by case basis.
Please do a video on exposing properly in SLOG3 during an exterior night shot! Would love to see how you do this and this would massively help me for my projects. I have looked at a lot of YT vids on exposing properly in SLOG3 for FX3 and when I see your vids, I like your exposure look the best! So would love your take on exterior night shot exposure. :)
With the monitor + app you can transform your iphone or ipad to a wireless monitor with minimal latency, use luts, false color, waveforms, touch to focus, change focus/f stop/ shutter speed etc etc etc. And lots of the functions are already available in the free version. Tried it on a recent shoot and it’s a game changer for me. Highly recommend it to anyone using Sony cameras!
The distance is very poor with the app. Absolutely recommend for basic one person shooter situations but not a professional shoot with multiple team members
Hey Jason! Thanks for clearly showing us how to read false colour! I shoot in standard mode for A7siii because I already like the colours but everyone else [all different types of cameras] shoot in log, should I switch over?
try switch over. head to sony and download the s-log 3 conversion lut. slap it on and play around with the highlights, shadows and whites. you'll have more dynamic range and will eventually get a better shot. No harm in trying something new and learning a new technique
I know im late but thanks for this video.. Now i am considering investing in a monitor to use false colour instead.. Hope i will find a tutorial in your channel teaching more detail on how to use false colour. 😁😁😁
I too ignore the built in metering guide - way too easy for it to be fooled. I use Zebras - set to 100% - to make sure that I am not 'blowing' out anything in the scene that shouldn't be (specular highlights etc) - that way you can dial up exposure (or lighting if using a fixed base ISO /CineEI) and expose to the right without sacrificing any details. In post you can pull that back down again as desired. Thoughts on this approach (that does not require an external monitor)??
I found out that setting the meter to +1.7 and auto iso for run and gun situations does do the job pretty well. Again best way is to do manual exposure but if you are in a pinch, 1.7 is the cheat code, inconsistent but better than nothing 😅
Im always very interested in fan noise. I look for a great monitor for my handheld setup. I record on camera sound so I need a very silent monitor. What would you personally recommend there ? Is the Portkeys usable ?
Ligth meters are still used on film sets. There is a good reason for that tool being around for so long. Saying that light meters on film sets are obviously spot light meters measuring light in a spot where they are placed not for the whole frame. Since like many people I can't afford buying additional monitor what I do in FX3 is when I have actor i spot meter their brightest skin to +1.0 while also having zebra at 93 not to overblow some other highlights. When no actor I use that zebra and it usually multi meters at +1.7 - +2.0. When in low light and actor face is not there or not important I meter highlights to +1.7 - +2.0. Also have my camera set to display LUT so if something is obviously not looking good with those settings I can adjust. Though it very rarely happens.

hey , how about the situation if we shoot on out door scene and doesn't had a lighting ? so should we sacrifice the background for a good exposure on the subject ?
You are living dangerously with those low batteries! :-) Anyway, I agree, the whole "1.7 over" is just too oversimplified. In reality, it always depends. Having said that, I'd rather make the error of overexposure, as opposed to underexposure, so I do often end up on "+1" -- not by default, rather by analysis.
Hello Jason, I know you did a video about the godox GM55 monitor, do you recomend buying that one? And thank you for all your tips, they have been so usefull and you are one of the reassons that i bought my 7Iv because of your reviews.
Question: Are these Portkeys monitors (HS5T, LH5P) working with A7IV properly as regards touch focus etc, etc or is there a firmware update that will need to happen from Portkeys d'you think? Great channel. Thanks!
Hey man! I noticed in some tests you’re in pp8 (slog3 assuming you haven’t customised it from default) & some you’re in pp11 (S cinetone.. once again.. assuming it’s as default). This would most likely give in accurate results as Scinetone isn’t meant to be over exposed like that so looking for the meter to be +1.7 would naturally give a bad image.. the over exposure is for log images.. the videos good, just noticed that! :)
You will notice the exposure is adjusted in each picture profile. I know there is an exposure difference. Multimeter is not the best way of exposing anyway as shown in my video and professional commercial work
You really are the man, and I love your content. But you are so much like me, lol, I think you'd benefit greatly by scripting your videos and cutting when you instinctively go off on tangents, because you rush into them and it just derails the viewers ease of following. You'd also make more money by just alluding to another video on your channel about a different topic instead of rushing into it via digression.
2:30 - Bruh, JUST SAY it doesn't have touch screen. Move on. All of this 2:30 to 3:18 is just ADHD nonsense... Get back to your video point.. You're losing focus...

Zebras are fantastic for exposing. Very similar concept to false color
Works for me also. I don’t see it practical to use an extra monitor when you’re on vacation and traveling light. These monitors are helpful, but not for everyone.
Exactly! I was thinking of doing the same thing or using false colors on the external monitor so I am not cooking/underexposing skin

I'm a Hybrid shooter. I just bought the A74 and FX3.. Thank you for this very helpful tip. SUBSCRIBED!
Two brilliant cameras l!!!
Excellent combo!
Will definitely start utilizing false color more. The hot spots makes things much more clear.

OMG! Thanks for sharing this Jason!! I have HS7T but haven't used false color, So useful!!!
No problems! Absolutely recommend
Thanks great vid. Just wondering why would wouldn’t just eyeball exposure using your monitor with the LUT you want to use. Does that make sense?

omg THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing this video. really appreciate
Thanks
Do you have Gamma Assist on when using an external monitor to expose S-Log3?
Boas Festas, Feliz Ano Novo. Thanks for your videos.
Thanks for sharing !! very important information Jason !!
Thank you man!

Amazing. Thank you for watching

Haha awesome thanks
My FX3 arrived today. Didnt understand false color till this video.
Yes!!!! I am so glad you watched it and gained something from it

2:37 arent there capacitive gloves?
Thank you for helpful demo!
How does the s-log gamma assist setting on the a7iv compare to external false color?

Thx U Jason… Always useful… Thx for the tips. Do you recommend the OSEE T5 KIT ? Caleb Pike made a video about it, it look awesome.
osee are making some pretty quality tools. I have a directors monitor by then and certainly recommend their brand
Great explanation!
I purchased fx3. fx3 have only hdmi port
if i connect hdmi port from fx3 to portkey hs7t ii monitor then i can take signal from sdi?
Do you know which formats you can record in through HDMI/Ninja 5 on the A7iv?

@@JasonMorrisphotocinema yeah sweet was just checking! Waveforms are my go to! :)
Is the a74 good for talking head videos or are there better cameras out there in the same price range ?
The Sony a7iv is amazing for talking head. The high resolution makes it look super crisp. No rolling shutter issues for static subjects
Can’t you set the Sony meter to face priority?
Very detailed and helpful!
Thank you for watching
your wife is a great sport! my GF will only do very brief test w me now. haha the struggle is real.
Great video man 🔥
Thanks my bro! Happy holidays
Great video thank you :D

Why not just use the histogram in camera?
Not reliable enough
Finally someone said it!!! lol

I find portkeys color to be innacurated as well as their exposure tools. I think the Atomos is way more accurate.

El zone alllll day.
Should be a good video
1:00 - no need for the cutaway, just say - we're not going into that here, and MOVE ON

Why not use only australian products luke blackmagic and atomos. Arent you patriotic?
avoid overexposure...go Canon!
