- Oakland, California is arguably one of the most most important cities to the Black community in America.
Everything from it being the birthplace of the Black Panthers, to the Black excellence seen and experienced in the booming tech scene.
Black excellence and the power of the community runs through the veins of this city, and it was a privilege to be able to capture it all.
Although there are too many people to thank, I want to thank the city of Oakland for giving me and my Passport Heavy team the opportunity to help tell the story of your city through the voices of your community.
Expect to see part two of the documentary in a few months, but for now I hope you enjoy part 1 of Discovering: Oakland, California.

I have lived in many cities across this country(NYC, Phila, Houston, Cincinnati, Dallas, LA) but to this day Oakland remains one of my favorite places I have ever lived.

EXCELLENT job!!!! I grew up in Oakland and what you are sharing in this series is exactly how I remember "life in Oakland." I just remember all of the LOVE and beauty in our communities, people cared so much about one another. No man, woman or child was left hanging. When there was a need, it was all hands on deck!! We did WHATEVER we could for one another!! We wanted our communities to look good and thrive. Businesses were booming everywhere in Oakland. A LOT of love in this city even though the media only reports the violence happening in Oakland. The violence here is no different than the violence happening in other cities all over the U.S.

Me being born and raised in Oakland for 27 years of my life I greatly appreciate this segment because I love my city so much and it genuinely hurts me the way we are perceived in the media and on television so I thank you and whoever you partnered with to make this keep up the good work sir

Brother Denzeli.I'm with you on your love for Oakland cause I had that same love for this city some time ago.But seeing how Oakland had changed thanks to Jerry Brown Oakland is not Oakland anymore.Look at what's leaving and look at what Oakland does not have that it did have.I'm 48 years old and I've seen things cone and go in this city and I blame city leaders for their lack luster efforts.I will say this.Oakland does not need affordable housing.Oakland needs jobs so people can go to work.How can people pay for affordable housing if you don't have jobs for people so they can pay their mortgage.Yes it used to hurt me when people said negative things about Oakland but seeing how dysfunctional city hall has became in the last what 14 years or so I can see why Oakland gets blasted.My civic pride for this city is cracked based on what has happened based on the handling of these sports teams,homelessness,crime etc.
@@silverado2004 you being the OG and me being the young buck you definitely have more awareness of what happened over the years than I do but me being a part of the younger generation in Oakland I just can't lose hope for what my city could blossom into yes there is a lot of negativity and a lot of crime even to this day I still go to sleep listening to gunshots at night and it's sad but I also see the beauty in it and I see people trying to do their part people who genuinely care and as long as I see that I can't lose hope

Gentrification has changed Oakland sad to say the Black population is decreasing every day.

I was thinking that as I watched the video. I enjoy all the nostalgia moments and then there was stuff where i3 was like oh that is new...been gentrified now at least a decade and I feel out of place in San Joaquin County but it feels different seeing the new space of Oakland the people feel the same though genuine very genuine. Glad I was able to watch

As a black man who's been living in Denver the past 2 years I was considering moving to Dallas this fall for this same reason: I miss black folks, I miss unity, I miss culture, but after seeing this I'm having second thoughts. Oakland seems amazing...

Been living in Oakland since I was 5. I am truly blessed to be raised here, I've learned so much, became so much more aware as a human, and overall more understanding. I wish all cities were as diverse as Oakland, I truly believe it would change the world.
Oakland is kind of a rich city aint it. I find it kinda funny how Oakland is supposed to be so ghetto but you gotta to have stacks to even live there. You'd figure that the ghetto is super affordable. Shit you cant even live in San Francisco and say your hood anymore. A lot folks be saying that Frisko folks are fruity azz rich folks.
I discovered Oakland in 1950. Man has it changed. Left California for Nevada in 1984. Loved that Hoff Brau downtown. The Oakland Senors changed their name to the Raiders. Sweet memories.
My friend used to go to that Hofbrau and he introduced me to it Broadway and Grand I think it was on Grand. What about quick way out on East 14th where they made the apple pies. Or the one on Telegraph my favorite was the one you're the Grand Lake Theater we went all the time in the mid-70s

I am from San Francisco Ca. (Haight-Ashbury) but boy do I love Oakland more. There is no more life in SF. But it is in Oakland.

From Detroit, but spent two years living in Oakland and Berkeley. Those were some of the best times of my life. I miss Oakland and the Bay every day.

I moved to Oakland for work about 3. Years ago and I fell in love, something about it changed my life and I can’t see myself leaving anytime soon it’s magnetic thank for this series man! I even saw one of my friends in the back ground at the taco truck scene haha
What I love most about Oakland is the diversity (the people) and wherever I go in the world I rep Oakland, the best city in the world!

I love Oakland, I lived in E Oakland and W Oakland in the late '80s and never had any problems, I also lived in Central Oakland near Piedmont. I love Lake Merritt and Juneteenth! I love the A's and 9rs (sorry Raiders) and Golden State Warriors. I love the Taquerias, Bar-b-que, and every type of ethnic foods. Chinatown, the small performance theatres, the Latin and jazz music scene, etc. What is not to love about Oakland!

Appreciate you telling the positive things about my city! Oakland has been bashed on for way too long. We know Oakland has it’s problems (just like any city), but Oakland offers so much more than what the media portrays.

I live in East Oakland. I love Oakland. Yes we might be one of the top 10 most dangerous cities to live but I have never lived in a city that all cultures and nationalities can come together in one place enjoy each other's company , laugh and can come together as a community without the drama. I live on seminary and yeah there's trash on our streets but when you sit back and look past all that Oakland is a beautiful place.

I am currently living in Colombia and have been here for about a year and a half now (ya know, just chasing my dreams), and this video was very nostalgic for me. Love Oakland, I have been involved in the community for several years and what breaks my heart is the how expensive Oakland is getting for the average family. People are being forced to leave their communities because of it. Oakland is such a rich city in love, talent and culture. Thank you for a awesome video.

Yo, so I'm from North Carolina and I took a promotion for work that sent me to SF for 2016. I will say, from the bottom of my heart, I LOVE OAKLAND! From my first time on The phone Ave, to my very First Friday, kickin it Betty Ono, to the eating in Uptown Oakland, first place I ever had Wingstop lol. Oakland will always hold a special place in my heart. Ironically my next promotion took me to Chicago lol. And Chi the best city in the summer on the planet! But that's another story. Everyone I met in the Bay was so nice. Y'all will always have a friend in me. Can't wait to go back. -Kent

Yeah, I'm from Chicago so I understand. There is many times a negative perception from people on the outside that have never traveled to these places. Oakland is sort of in that same boat as Chicago. You did a really good job at finding those good people that are there and working within the community to better things. Awesome video.
