Grandma Gloria, I am 67 year old man and my favorite pie is still sweet potato pie. You are the first person I have seen other than my mother, put lemon in her SP pies. She called it her "secret" ingredient. When we would attend a family reunion or a Church Homecoming, everyone would get my mom's desserts first. I can still remember my paternal Aunts talking to her about why Her's tasted better than theirs. She passed away back in 2004, and out of the six kids, only my older sister, my younger sister, and I know the secret. I will pass it on to my 8 grandchildren. Great job on the video.
My mom did the same, no spices like cinnamon or nutmeg. She also added a touch of almond extract. When she died, I could NOT find her recipe anywhere, even though she gave it to me several times. It was all in her head, never wrote it down. A year or so after she passed, I was in the attic on Christmas Eve, looking for a dessert tray, when lo and behold, I found the recipe on a 3x5” card. She was giving me my Christmas gift, I’m convinced.
I stuck to your recipe, and I must say, Ms. Gloria, thank you so much. I am 40 years old and have tasted many sweet potato pies, and this, by far, is the absolute best one! I can not thank you enough! ❤
Mine too... I miss this knowledge. But I was blessed to get THE ALL that Fannie May and Nellie taught me.. Grandma and Mother... that Lemon takes it to another level!! 😋

I was so engrossed in this, I felt like I was right there with her in the kitchen. Best EVER cooking video I have seen. Thank you Grandma Gloria! You're the grandma we all need!
I just wanted to say thank you for sharing this invaluable information. This pie making technique is so important to be shared with future generations. When our love ones leave they take precious history and information with them. Again sincere thanks.
lorrie whiley so true. I had a relative that passed away recently very suddenly and she was the pie maker. I asked her years ago for recipe and she never shared it. Now I’m trying to find a recipe that might replicate it. I’m sharing all my secrets with my children and grandchildren.
My mom's tip to avoid a lot of strings is to pick more rounded potatoes. The (length) longer the potatoes the more stringy the potatoes. Hope this helps.
Thank you, this is very helpful. Thanks for the support. You can go to any of my videos and you will see the link to my , WOW WOW COOKBOOK, on Amazon. keep in touch.
another tip is after baking or boiling the potatoes, let them cool and cut the yellow layer that is under the skin to get rid of most of he strings. 🥧🥧🍠🍠🥰🥰🥰🥰
7/8/23: This was about the best sweet potato pie video I've ever seen. You were so down to earth, and your instructions were informative and right on point. (I didn't know about the strands or the lemon extract.) I felt like I was right there in the kitchen with you, but I wish I could have tasted your pie in the end. It looked so yummy! 🙂 Anyway, I'm on my way to the market in a few to get the pie crusts. I have everything else, so I'm on a mission. Thank you so much Grandma Gloria for this wonderful recipe! Love u Grandma ... I miss my Momo and my Momie after watching her.. how she exsplians everything so lovingly !! We must honor and treasure are elderly Black Family !!! They all we got
@@robinbelgrave3554 Robin you know, this is what I do, I use 3 eggs, and I use eagle brand milk and everthing that she uses, except I go light on the cinnamon, because cinnamon has a tendency to turn your filling dark, I use a tbsp of nutmeg, and a 1/2 teaspoon of lemon and when I can find it I use vanilla, butter nut flavoring without the lemon flavoring.
Btw Grandma Gloria is giving us family, a lot of us don’t have a grandma or never ever did in the first place. Thank you for sharing her with the world!!!❤❤❤
This year I tried this recipe for Thanksgiving rather than boil the potatoes, I baked them with the skin on and my pies were absolutely amazing. When she said vanilla EXTRA I knew right then this pie was a shoe stopper fa sho and it was. Thank you Grandma Gloria for sharing I love watching your videos. Keep the coming
They're sweeter when baked and you won't have those "strings." Punch a few fork holes in the potatoes and bake on 350 for an hour if the potatoes are big.
@@toniajohnson188 Adding on to this, back them until that brown sugary stuff comes out the holes. Make sure you put lining on the pan otherwise itll be hard to clean
This brought me back to my granny teaching me how to make this. Lol I about fell out when she said Nutneg and called the extract extra because my granny calls it that and no one's going to contest it lol. My granny's 97 now and we cook for her-not because she can't, but rather she taught us well. Cherish your elders 🥰!!
The best sweet potato pie is to bake sweet potatoes and keeping all of the sweetness and the natural flavor I learned this from my old lady don't boil but baked sweet potatoes and you will taste the difference
My Daddy was from SE Kentucky. He was a cook in the Army. He always baked sweet potatoes, never boiled them He always said the flavors would be drawn out of you boiled the potatoes. He was right, l've tried them both ways and found out baked is BEST!
Wow! I believe this was THE BEST! Thank you Grandma Gloria! This was a big hit on Thanksgiving! Learned something new about boiling and beating out the strands, and adding lemon extract. YUM! I also added some grated lemon zest (I needed the fresh lemon juice for something else.). I made the filling only since I'd already made 2 gluten free doughs and didn't want to make and roll another pie dough. The oven was at 350° since there was no crust. GG's note in a comment way down was: "Bake at 375 and do your first check 50 min. And when you see a glaze on top it is time to remove from the oven."
She had me at “nut’n’egg” lol. I knew it was going to be a fantastic recipe as soon as I heard her pronounce nutmeg like my Madea! Love it! I made this recipe last year and it was amazing. My family loved it. Making it again this year. I’m so grateful for you taking the time to record this.
This is the first video I’ve seen of yours. I just want to say that this made me tear up a little bit. You look just like an older version of my mom. She passed away 3 yrs ago, but you literally look just like her. I showed my husband and my children this video and they were in shock! I wish there was a way I could send a picture of my mom. She made really good pies too. ☺️
Reminds me exactly of my grandmother too. She is still alive and i am thankful for that. Just so you know, she is making pies in heaven and you will see her once again ❤️
This was my first time making a pie. My grandmother not able to make them this year and I really love sweet potato pie. And I gotta say thank you soooooo much! This turned out better than good! I honestly can’t thank you enough.
4years and still going strong mom this video lol here it is the day before thanksgiving and I thank you so much Grandma Gloria!!!!! My pies were delicious!!!
If you roast your potatoes whole without cutting anything, you won't have any strings at all and it candies the sweet potato so beautifully, like when you eat a baked sweet potato and it's no strings it has the same effect on sweet potato pies. 🌻🌻
@@seacoast4950 yes I add my sugar and all the other ingredients also. See Desserts by Dennis sweet potato cheese cake. He shows how the potatoes look after blending them...
I made 8 pies for Thanksgiving and my family is wanting to pay me and bring the ingredients for me to make them more. They told me it reminded them of their ggma's before she passed. Thank you for taking the time and recording this!

Same here. My Nana tried writing all her recipes in a notebook for us to help her memory but she unfortunately passed away. This lady reminds me of her so much.
my mouth is watering. my mom had made sweet potato pies for me for years. till she pass 12 years ago now. you know moms and grandmas never share cause its a secret lol. i used your recipe and let it rest over night, made the crust...................................bit into it brought a tear to my eye. God Bless you and thank you so much. i will never let this go.
I was agreeing with everything you said, that's exactly how I was taught... then you hit 3:28 and mentioned taking out the strands and I LITERALLY threw my hands up and screamed YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ............Lord I have caught so many saying " I ain't taking the time to do all that" , and those are the same ones that say mine is the best they ever had LOL. I don't measure anything either, you just ... know. And I was taught to mix it all together and taste it til you get it right, BEFORE you put in the eggs, and then cook it in a cast iron skillet.... now I'll go watch the rest of your video and see how you do it but YES take out the strands !
Grandma Gloria is so sweet and she just helped me in a major way! I will always follow this recipe for years to come. Bless her heart! Happy Thanksgiving a year later! 🤎💛🍁

I've been using Grandma Gloria's sweet potato pie recipe for a few years now. 💯 💯 💯 Winner every time. The measurements are a good basic guideline, but you have to learn to taste as you go and cook from your heart. Grandma Gloria said, "it should look like cake batter and taste like ice cream." That's soul food.
I love Grandma Gloria's recipes. You can feel the love that's put into her cooking. I read much further down that you should bake these at 375 degrees and check after 50 minutes for a glaze on top. When you see that, they're done! I hope this is correct. Hadn't tried it yet but will be doing so VERY SOON!!!

I was little when my Grandma Nancy passed. She was the real cook in the family. Thank you for bein my stand in Grandma, so I won't be embarrassed showin up with no bland sweet potato pie.
Grandma knows what she is doing. Grandma did mention that she used 5 eggs, before being asked again how many eggs is using, lol. She said she would normally have larger sweet potatoes than the sweet potatoes she is using to make these pies and mentioned that because she has extra sweet potato batter, she is using a total of 5 eggs, opposed to 4 as she would normally use. I'm paying attention, because my grandmother never did like repeating herself twice and she had to repeat herself, that posed to be a problem, lol. Love this woman and her way of old school baking. Much respect!🔥🔥♥️🔥🔥
yes! my grandma too.. My grandma use to make pies every year for the holidays for everyone she passed in 2010 and I made them one year shortly after her passing but since then forgot her recipe, so I was like let me hop on UA-cam to see if watching someone could help me remember but, as I was watching Grandma Gloria, I was like hmmmm I feel something missing or my grandma did something different and it was the carnation evaporated milk. now I need to find out how much to use. I'm trying not to beat myself up for not writing down the recipe or keeping up with it.

I used GG's recipe last year and it was a BIG HIT!!! Getting the strands out is great! Let's get this video over a million this holiday season!!
What temp did you cook it on and how long?
What temp do you bake the pies and for how long?
What temp to cook and how long did you leave it in the oven?

Thank you, I needed the cooking time, and the oven temperature.
How long do u boil the potato for

Thanks a lot for your help. do they sell butter by sticks in the US? it's what everyone uses, no measurement. May I ask what a stick weighs please?
Here AGAIN in 2024 lol ready to make this for Thanksgiving 😋
I needs to just go ahead and write the recipe down. I come back every year. 😂
Used your recipe yesterday for Thanksgiving and my husband called it "award winning pie" thank you so much for sharing! Lemon extract...golden! 💡
Hello, how long did u bake it?
Hey, how long did you bake it and at what temp?
About 20 - 25 min
Sorry for the late response, I’m just now seeing these comments. I baked my pies at 375 degrees for 15 min and then 350 degrees for 30 min.
My grandmother used lemon extract in her pies it truly makes a difference and it's very good
I was so engrossed in this, I felt like I was right there with her in the kitchen. Best EVER cooking video I have seen. Thank you Grandma Gloria! You're the grandma we all need!
How long do it's stay in the oven

Love this!!
Do you use carnation milk
How long did she cook two deep dish potatoes pie & at what Temperature????? Thanks
I come back to this video every year. Even though I don’t use the recipe, it’s a mini tradition.
@@grandmagloriascookinggarde3603I love you Grandma Gloria may the Lord keep blessing you. Amen 🙏🏾
Yes my elder told be small potatoes…less strings
Yes medium to smaller is best strangy. and in best sweepotatos to buy in October during harvest. Grow your own potatoes
another tip is after baking or boiling the potatoes, let them cool and cut the yellow layer that is under the skin to get rid of most of he strings. 🥧🥧🍠🍠🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thank you Grandma Gloria. It's 2024 and we are still watching and learning from your videos. We appreciate you and may God bless you.
I absolutely love how she’s saying lemon & vanilla “Extra”
Yes, I loved that too...😆
She's adorable😊
haha... so do i!!!
I do too.
I said the same thing!! Made me miss my grandma and being in the kitchen with her 💙💙
My mom used lemon and vanilla extract in her sweet potatoes pies, l love her and miss her dearly. I make pies to honor her.
Thank you Ms. Gloria for not only sharing your recipe, but your love of cooking.
I made this a couple of years ago and I bout made myself sick tryin to eat the whole pie in one day. When I tell you this slaps… This SLAPS!
Grandma Gloria wanted all the smoke, when she said" you'll never go back to Patties" No games to be played lol. That, thats down south in her. 💖

But who gone check Granny though?👀👀🤣🤣
7/8/23: This was about the best sweet potato pie video I've ever seen. You were so down to earth, and your instructions were informative and right on point. (I didn't know about the strands or the lemon extract.) I felt like I was right there in the kitchen with you, but I wish I could have tasted your pie in the end. It looked so yummy! 🙂 Anyway, I'm on my way to the market in a few to get the pie crusts. I have everything else, so I'm on a mission. Thank you so much Grandma Gloria for this wonderful recipe! I'll let you know how mine turned out.
Grandma we love you !!! Thank you for giving us this traditional blessing…
My grandmother, whose name is also Gloria, passed away last week. She was famous for her sweet potato pie in the church and family. She taught me what goes in it, but never knew any exact measurements lol. This is helpful. I'm gonna make her proud this Thanksgiving. Thanks for the video ❤

Once again Grandma Gloria's recipe did not disappoint! My 3rd year cooking with Grandma Gloria during the holidays. ❤❤❤ What a Gem of knowledge captured by a beloved elder! Thank you🎉❤
So many things I love about your video. Gloria is a genuine sweet lady! You didn’t hype up or try and hollywood your video. It’s 100% real. The most important ingredient is Ms. Glorias love, passion and knowledge of what she’s doing. I’m making a Grandma Gloria’s Sweet Potato Pie today. Thank you and God bless!
I saw this video last year. I accomplished my first sweet potato pies last year. Now they are a hit. Thank You Grandma Gloria for sharing your recipe🙌🏾
You have the best pies on you tube!

Thank you for this. My grandmother passed away in January of 2021. I am making her pie this time by myself. I was a little emotional watching because This part of the journey is with her being with me in spirit. Much love to you.

This gave me all the warm fuzzies!!! I don't know why I got teary-eyed at the end. It was just the most comforting thing I've seen in a while.
I love that you constantly test for the correct consistency and flavoring which I don’t see many professionals doing. I’m sure that’s why you do have the best pies

I didn’t see any milk added??
@@rosierussell5398 I wonder the same thing. But I guess people have different recipes. I am sure its delicious still.
Looks delicious 😋 I will try
I watch this every year for a perfect pie.

Why bake instead? And what's the Temps and times?? I've never made a pie before and I needs all the secrets sis.. 🤗🤗
Listen! The way you remind me of my mother, I keep coming back. God is so good. I hope you’re well and still giving wisdom. ❤
You are so right
I bake mine as well!!
My Daddy was from SE Kentucky. He was a cook in the Army. He always baked sweet potatoes, never boiled them He always said the flavors would be drawn out of you boiled the potatoes. He was right, l've tried them both ways and found out baked is BEST!
I bake/roast mine too
Yaaaasssss
How to make the dough?
Thanks for adding the timing and temperature. That's what I was looking for!
Thank you grandma Gloria, I’m using this recipe for the 2nd time. I tweaked it a little but I love this recipe!
The moment I saw her I loved her ❤️❤️❤️❤️ She look like she gives the best hugs when you goin through 🥰

This is the first video I’ve seen of yours. I just want to say that this made me tear up a little bit. You look just like an older version of my mom. It’s currently 11:10pm the day before thanksgiving 🤣🤣
it’s the best ❤
No milk was ok?
If you roast your potatoes whole without cutting anything, you won't have any strings at all and it candies the sweet potato so beautifully, like when you eat a baked sweet potato and it's no strings it has the same effect on sweet potato pies. 🌻🌻
I'M SORRY BUT THE "STRINGS" ARE ABUNDANT IN MOST SWEET-POTATOES NO MATTER WHICH COOKING TECHNIQUE USED...THEY'RE PART OF THE POTATOES COMPOSITION
All you hv to do is use small sweet potatoes and no strings. My mom taught me that.
Baked them and blend them in a blender or food processor. Make a smooth batter.
@@yeyoof3496 , does the blending get rid of the strings?
@@seacoast4950 yes I add my sugar and all the other ingredients also. See Desserts by Dennis sweet potato cheese cake. He shows how the potatoes look after blending them...
Because of Grandma Gloria I am confident I can get thru making my meal this year. She gives me hope 😁
I made 8 pies for Thanksgiving and my family is wanting to pay me and bring the ingredients for me to make them more. They told me it reminded them of their ggma's before she passed. Thank you for taking the time and recording this!
How long do you have to boil the sweet potatoes for???
@1:58 i was already so invested, I caught myself saying "yes ma'am!" as if i was standing beside her as she's showing me how to make this pie.

I'm in tears she reminds me of my grandmother. That generation is sooo precious.
I must say I’ve followed this recipe for years. It’s amazing! Thank you!!! ❤❤❤❤

But what temp do you cook the pies and for how long?
^^^pls answer this cuz I’m planning on making this for thanksgiving and I’m not trying to wing it when I’m feeding other people 😂
@@kaystar3434 350 for about 25 minutes is usually good.
Thanks. Because she left that part out. I’m fixing them today or tomorrow

So True. Don’t get granny “fLustrated”! 🤣😂😅
Thank you so much. My mother used to make hers the same way but she added carnation evaporated milk. I’m right with you grandma Gloria.
