Zelda rey - she pass her throne to her male cousin and off to Rom for philosophy .. art and academic .... she realise .. she doesn't interested lead the country and the empire ... she just love knowledge.... when she passed away .. she still virgin
No but queen Kristina the first of Sweden was so interesting. She was the most intense person, her dad who she idolized died when she was 4 I think. She also HATED women, because she was taught from birth that women could not rule yet she was one of the most successful rulers in Swedish history, which is why she is often theorized to be a trans man because she was constantly thorn between her being a good ruler and that she was a woman. And her official title was king Kristina. She was deeply in love with a maid named Ebba who was her "bed companion". She also abdicated from the throne cause she thought Sweden was too small and uncultured, so she moved to Italy and became a Catholic and changed her name to Alexandra after her childhood idol Alexander the great. IM JUST RAMBLING BUT I COULD TALK ABOUT HER FOR HOURS SHES SO FASCINATING!
Shes also said to have laughed at canon fire when she was a new born. She dressed up as Alexander the great and performed one of his speeches in front of the whole court. She was so "difficult," to deal with for the higher ups in Swedish government and refused to marry or submit to men that after she said fuck you to Sweden and left they removed the female throne inheritance and it wasn't reinstated till 1980
I like this movie because it's based on the true history of Christina, Queen of Sweden, that was probably a lesbian. It's nice to show it because, even though she was kinda crazy, history tends to erase lesbians when they can. Showing there were women loving women in history is invigorating.
Kristina of Sweden was very, very real! She abdicated the throne because she wanted to live freely in Rome, given she was gay, didn’t want to marry, and had converted to Catholicism. It definitely wasn’t over just one girl. The blonde and brunette thing; I guess life imitates art, because Kristina was indeed dark-haired and Ebba Sparre was in fact blonde. There is a real portrait of Ebba Sparre in a blue dress much like the one in the film. And trust me, the lesbian did not “get nothing;” Kristina spent the rest of her days partying in Rome; eating, drinking, reading, watching plays and having affairs. She brought peace to a war that had lasted decades and brought science and education to Sweden on an unprecedented scale; and she was in fact quite tomboyish in her youth. The writers of the film actually got a lot right (except Kristina actually hated Descartes).
Yes tomatoes were a new thing in Europe in the 17th century (imported from South America) and were sometimes called "love apples" since they were thought to be an aphrodisiac. ;) Also people of colour in Sweden back then were extremely few and far between. For more about the actual Queen Kristina: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christina,_Queen_of_Sweden
Well :D I think Queen Christina in the end was fed up of being Queen. She worked very hard, got up at early hours, was awake for a very long time and wanted to push forward science and arts which she definitely did and that was her biggest wish. Changing her confession from lutheran (?) to catholic made her drift apart from the Swedish people but helped her to be free. Later she went to Rome where people let her be the way she was (lol no idea if the pope or whoever was ok with her being so gay sometimes, I'd really love to read more about her stay there) and she could study science, culture and arts as much as she wanted. She was definitely a very smart person and a free spirit. I read a book written by her about herself. She wrote it because she thought, that anyone else wouldn't really get to the bottom of her. And it was interesting how she depicted her country's history, her family and also it seemed like she hated the way women were at that time. Also she had lots of quotes in there, like lots of wise sentences to go by or not :D Btw: I read somewhere else that she sent letters to the dear bed companion, even when she was in Rome later. Seemed like she never really got over it :( Anyway. A very interesting character. Also I like the actress playing her: Malin Buska. She is a style icon and seems to be a very successful actress now in Sweden (she is swedish).
the thing with her rome gayness is that she was a daughter of "the lion of the north" - her father gustav II. adolf was the military leader of protestant forces. Therefore having his daughter CONVERT TO CATHOLICISM was a spiritual and ideological victory of the catholic church. So what she was a little "peculiar" (these things are my conclusions based on what i've learned, take my word with grain of salt) :)
I remember watching Queen Christina (1933) when I was a kid. Greta Garbo was alluring af! Also, "bed warmer" was an actual occupation one could have. Some merely warming the bed by laying in it before the bed's proper owner laid down and some others... Well you know...
Omg Bridget!! This is giving me the feels! I used to listen to her comedy a lot, but I REALLY miss Brunch with Bridget!! Taking it back to the South of Nowhere days too lol ❤️🎉
Holy shit. This is the funnest guest this show has ever had. Please have her stick around. Or give her her own segment on the channel! I'm swooning :0 ❤️
I haven't seen Bridget in so long! I first found her when she was doing Brunch with Bridget on AfterEllen like ten years ago. Good to see she's still as funny as ever.
You seriously need to watch “If these walls could talk 2” with Brittany Ashley and/or Ashly Perez - it has Ellen, Sharon Stone, Natasha Lyonne, Chloë Sevigny and Michelle Williams... what more could a woman want from a movie???
it is a horrible movie tho... the first part is super sad and the 2 others are so super CRINGE it's unbearable, especially Ellen trying to get preggers BAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH boo humbug
I love this channel, I could watch Drunk Lesbians Watch all day. Amanda is hilarious this show is so funny and I love that honest commentary about consent it always warms my heart.
"Its like she just wrestled a beaver or something." Well THERE'S an double entendre if I've ever heard one! 🤣 Omg, please bring Bridget back for future vids!
premium useless lesbian I feel the same way the whole movie. I felt like she was abusing her power over the girl and she only went along because the queen was so forceful.
I agree with your train of thought. But we should also view their relationship taking into account the context. It was the 17th century, Kristina was a powerful woman raised as a prince and surrounded by men. She had a romantic inclination toward women yet she didn't really understand what she felt or how to act on it. I think this is pretty clear in the movie. However Kristina and Ebba both sent each other love letters showering the other with affection actually. It was a consensual relationship in spite of one being above the other in terms of royal hierarchies. Maybe the director should had been more careful when it comes to consent. Besides, there's this "influenced by the occult and the devil" theme through the movie which leaves homosexuality and the Queen on questionable grounds which is uncomfortable on so many levels unfortunately.
M. Gala Ferrari i dont think Kristina is influenced by devil thing in this moive. She was described as ’a Christian without faith‘ and from the friendship with Descartes we may assume that she never believed in any Gods or Devils. So in the film that book proves that devil is not as described as in bible which encourages her to follow her heart.
@@GalaFerrari I really appreciate your idea on why they were in "a consensual relationship ". Yes the keypoint should be the 17th century when people lived their lives without any concern to their existence or to their own feelings, emotions...“Christina is remembered as one of the most educated women of the 17th century” as it is described in Wikipedia, I dont think she would believe "life is gray" as it is decribed by Ebba. That is why she struggled a lot to figure life more out with philosophy rather than with dogma but at the same time they were people who lived 400 years ago there were so many things science has not explained yet then. There are 2 scenes with a fly in the moive and it is interesting when it comes to the attitudes of Christina to those things dogma forbidden.Actully She has been restrained much more as she grows up yet the same time she is struggling more to find her own way which finally leads her to freedom. For me the moive is more like a luminous story, "a separate piece of art" to decribe one's life with a certain tale of her sexual orientation. I believe this 106mins moive has done a relatively good job to depict an extraordinary King's portrait with her aspiration, her curiosity, her dignity and her passion and I love the tender way they did it :)
back in the day...tomatoes were called "love apples" because they believed they had aphrodisiac powers and others just straight up thought they were poisonous...
So cool to see Bridget. Loved her for a long time. Thank you for these videos so I know what movies to avoid. You should do an old school classic the incredible adventure of 2 girls in love. Baby laurel hollman is all I can say. Also better then chocolate is another good one.
Y'all should really watch show me love(fucking åmål in swedish), it's a super cute swedish lesbian teen movie from 1998 with a happy ending! It also really paved the way for Swedish teen movies in the past 20 years
Hey Girl Ship TV! Just wanted to say I love the content, always funny. I just wanted to recommend "The Fingersmith". I think it's a fairly good movie and I'd love to see your review. Thanks for all you do!
Lol Amanda in her feels taking about the struggle of falling for straight women and Bridget trying to figure out what fruit was on the table... “is that persimmons?”

We're doing movies again. If it doesn't kill me, cause the movie is 2.5 hours long, next week should be The Handmaiden... Hopefully.
😍😍😍
I'm screaming I'm so excited. But damn it , it should be Fingersmith first since it's a TV movie but hooray movies agaij
Glad its movies again. Didn't like the short music ones tbh
PLEASE WATCH THE HANDMAIDEN
Wooo!! I’m too excited. Sending you good vibes because that’s a lot of work. We don’t deserve you Amanda. Thank you so much for all your hard work!!
Topless girl with a sword is honestly everything I need.
Yes please
i never knew topless girls with sworods was a thing, but now i am definitely into it!
Agreed
I haven’t watched the video yet. Very excited to see what the context of this comment is 😂
I melted with that sceneeeee
"If the fingers are inside of another woman."
Lol
this is based on the actual queen of sweden if yall didnt know
kyler brophy wait that’s everything
Once I saw the movie I had to look the queen up and it was nice to get some background information on her.
Infor please
Yeah but it was loosely based on her at most

Swedish history is full of extra af people
Damn this is interesting
@@itsauro637 I'll have to make a documentary on her
"Get out of here pregnant" 😂😂😂 Bridget killed me with that. I remember watching this movie and being so uncomfortable.

Apparently she wanted to be called Alexander
religious beliefs tends to erase lesbians and gays
i agree. i didn’t know about her till like 5 minutes ago.
Also this is a real story, like she really did give up her throne, Christina of Sweden look her up!
Kristina of Sweden was very, very real! She abdicated the throne because she wanted to live freely in Rome, given she was gay, didn’t want to marry, and had converted to Catholicism. "of course a straight man wrote this, she would never give up her throne in real life!" it's based on actual history lol
Little thing that I think no one mentioned so far: the blonde/brunette thing in this case is historically accurate.
The only thing that makes these sad movies bearable is watching you watch them

Bridget McManus! Now that was a throwback to the good old Brunch with Bridget days!

Sooo are we making Bed Companion™ a thing?
Domain name was already taken... haha, but do we really need it? :P
Yesssss I'll support it lol
Oh my god you need to have Bridget on for another episode lol, she seems so upbeat and happy😂
“why is her hair so awful”? *Kristina spins*. “Oh that’s why” hahaha
haha i didnt understand that part, can you explain why?
JASYAS I think the joke is that Kristina twirl intensely with her hair down, which cause her hair all tangled up, so she has messy/awful hair haha
Emily Wright oh ! i thought she had beautiful hair, also the scene she runs in the catle is my favorite part
thank you
This was hilarious 😂, also as a Tudor history nerd I can confirm that is exactly what happened 😂😂
I just watched this movie last weekend it was actually really good! So glad you guys are watching it!

You should watch Rafiki, just saw it at TIFF and it’s really beautifully shot with fantastic music

Was shook when I read Bridget McManus! Can we get a revival of Brunch with Bridget, please?
