THE GIRL KING is the captivating new feature by Finland-born filmmaker Mika Kaurismäki (MAMA AFRICA, ROAD NORTH), one of world cinema’s most versatile and acclaimed talents. The English-language film is a depiction of several years in the life of the 17th century Queen Kristina of Sweden, the “Girl King.” Born in 1626 and queen by the age of six, Kristina was the most famous woman in the world during her lifetime and remains a controversial figure in Sweden to this day and one of the most influential and fascinating figures to have graced European history.
Good news, this was just added to Netflix! (It is what brought me here. I like watching trailers of movies before deciding if I wanna watch the movie or not)
So? Did you like it? :0
Me too lol
It is also on Hulu so...ayeeee
I love that this is based on a true story
it is?
+londondarapper good Christina queen of Sweden
wow so there was actually a Christina queen of Sweden?
BelieberOf LV yes. she was a cross dressing queen that was known to have female lovers. most famously Ebba Sparre
History that I actually find interesting
I think Kristina of Sweden needs a very long drama to chronicle her unique & complex character, a single movie may be a failure. Great cast, but please: movie dialogue in Swedish!
This movie just randomly popped in to my head. I remeber when they filmed it near where I lived at the time. We tried to very discreetly walk our dog on the nearby hiking trail wishing we could get a glimpse of it. There's even a few shots of that bridge in the trailer at 1:46 and 1:49. It has been some time since I saw this movie. Maybe I should watch it again sometime.
Christina was an extraordinary human being. She was born way ahead of her time. She had a magnificent mind, I understood and supported her final decision in regard to the Swedish throne/monarchy. Her court was full of sexist, pseudo religious bigots and zealots who refused to accept change or anything contrary to their so called "traditions". Pathetic, the lot of them.
Christina was the sexist one
Rational thinking are the most important at this time.
I just saw the movie and realize something Queen Kristina use power to gain knowledge while Queen Elizabeth used knowledge to gain power
rigby16 yes

yes they could/should of elaborated on their comment on which Queen they are referring to, but honestly when people bring up "Queen Elizabeth" most people direct their attention, memory, thoughts to Queen Elizabeth I of England/Ireland because of her glorious one of a kind appearance... (Ahhh-mmm cough cough😂) her looks that everyone remembers oh so well... its burned into our souls... Kidding... No, it's because she was ONE of a few Great rulers that was the most favorite, feared, loathed, admired, respected, memorable just flat out amazingly amazing rulers of all time and a female at that. She is the most taught in school, or movies made of, the many books written and documented about, all the stories told of her and her life the good and bad... She is even more referenced today than Queen Elizabeth II whom is still alive and well, reigning over her people/lands at this very moment and doing great also but Queen Elizabeth I is just the most mentioned memorable... I also just asked my husband and 16 year old daughter this... "When I say Queen Elizabeth, what Queen comes to mind first"... they both responded with... "that Queen who Cate Blanchett played in that one movie" (movie was called Elizabeth and I think like '97 or '98 it was made, one of my favorite) So I get why the OP said what they did that you responded with wanting more information to as what Queen they are speaking of cause there is more than one... So Yes there is more than one but she is the main one that comes to mind when spoken of. Honestly, I don't know much about any of the others really... And that is my fault and also fixable... Haha sorry I just rambled away here! My bad! 😂😜😜
I thought I was the only one who seen similarities between them wtf
@@SomePerson_Online well there is more than 7 billion of people on earth odds are that this movie was seeing by probably 100.000 people or so there should be at least 100 of us if only 0.1% of people catch it, but anyway wanna be friends? we could also discuss how her library impacted how scandinavian nations see the value of education
rigby16 I found this movie randomly on Tubi lol, and yeah we can be friends :)
This will probably have a tragic ending, but I'll still watch it lol.
of course tragic. she was heartbroken because as usual you cant have what your heart wants because the bible is against it hahaha . who made the stupid bible again?
Marie Marie stupid people, from stupid 3000 years ago
Marie Marie true people can’t love the person they want to it’s not possible in the Bible.
@@cinderellakonstantinsylus4859 because some old grumpy man missunderstand the bible, several theologist and bible students say that it's no real prohibition to homosexual personal relationship, the banned prsctices where specifically ritualistic and political practices
SPOILERS
Her lover was forced to marry a man 😔 But that’s okay! because she gave Sweden everyone karma by giving her first cousin the throne.
Finally a good movie about this extraordinary Swedish queen
i've watched this movie like more than 5x! i fell in love with it but damn!it broke my heart😑great movie! long live Cristina!
This movie seems underrated
IT IS
It is
Doesn't have an ad-campaign
wonderfully directed, great casting - everyone did a good job filling their roles. i am clueless as to how historically accurate this movie, though but that didn't stop me from enjoying the film.
i think the _'king'_ is perfectly cast. i liked her social awkwardness, i found it really endearing. anyway, the movie is of course filled with angst, what lesbian movie isn't? nonetheless it was still an entertaining watch. i'd give it a 4/5.
a friendly reminder, this was set in the 17th century, so don't expect a happy ending. we barely even get a happy ending with movies set in the 20th/21st century, so...... it *doesn't* have a tragic ending *_BUT_* not a happy ending either. it simply had _'the end'_. lol
I genuinely believe Kristina was autistic :) I can relate to her in that as well as other things
muzik4me345 I think they should have put a happy ending in the end even though it’s not historically accurate
@@cinderellakonstantinsylus4859 maybe but sometimes things just are not ment to have a happy ending
omg this movie was...YES..a masterpiece..simply a masterpiece.
I just watched it to Hulu. I love it.. Thr character who played queen is amazing and beautiful..

Aye, it does. The story of Queen Kristina is a very interesting one.
Long live Kristina!
I watched this movie and LOVED it! Have to watch it again after reading the comments ❤❤❤
damn totally watching this
Give me the lesbian content I want!
oh man, i loved this movie.
Are there Francois Arnaud and Lucas Bryant? I love these two guys! Historic films and tv-shows are always awesome. Trailer looks epic! But I guess I will not be able to see the movie in Russia :(((
the film is ok it's not going to rock the world of historical films but I never knew about this woman before this film so I learn something.
Most lesbian period drama I have ever seen
The film is a masterpiece ✨
The producers didn't take in consideration that Christina was far from attractive. She had a deformed chest, a bent back and uneven shoulders. She was often described as obese (but back then, it was not a negative attribute). She had no pride in her looks: hair was always messy and at one point, she totally shaved her head and wore man's wig. She was not a pretty sight at all, unlike what is presented in the movie...
Étoile Filante i feel like, they did totally take that into consideration. .
Death Visit an all-girls school and you’ll see🤷♀️🤷♀️
Death Unless if you’re like 40 then bye
Death Wtf I’m not even white and I’m not gonna give out their instagram accounts lmao who knows what the fuck you could be, some predator or some shit.

Vi la película, pero en el trailer hay escenas que nunca las vi, por cierto Malin Buska es LA VERDADERA REINA DE SUECIA!
My favourite LGBT+ movie EVER.
It's Epic story but very sad indeed....
Sanny Fanny so sad
Please guide me where I can watch this movie.i am missing it ..iam from india
Saw it on Netflix. Just a heads up, there's little action in it.
That's what makes it a true monarch historic movie. It's not about being in the front line shouting heroically for a greater cause (that's just for recruitment campaigns to get soldiers to the ranks back then and today) - it's all about the higher-ups, in the back-rooms, with their fragile egos, giving their best for themselves, their bloodline and as a result accidentally to all, who envy their wealth and power.
What I mean is - this is so much more real. No heroic dying for a reason that is lied to them. If they would do it for their brothers and sisters, then hello - planet, homo sapiens, there you go. No - it's a "fatherland" or "motherland" or... "I'm-too-lazy-to-find-love-and-friends-in-another-language-land" . And don't come to me talking how cultures are different in their virtues / morals for human life. That's just a fassade and rather a matter of getting to know one another, without first condemning of something being different = death/monster before understanding, how this unfamiliar aspect is used for structuring a society and individuals' needs. It's actually frightening, how things "begin to make entirely sense", when you visit a completely "weird" culture and spend long enough to see their way of life.
Anyhow - there are too few actual "ploting, politics" historic movies. :D
wow this is the kind of movie that will bring excitement!!!
I LIKE IT... SPECIALLY MALIN BUSKA WAS FABULOUS
There has been speculations based on letters and mistress Sparre being favored by the queen, nothing more. What is known is their close friendship. Queen Kristina was highly religious at a time in history where lesbianism was not normal or proper, more like outright dangerous. So it's doubtful that she would have done anything to compromise her soul according to her faith. This needs to be kept in mind.
Well said.
i loved this! does anyone know good books about her? i want to get into reading again & i would love to read about her!! :
Try Veronica Buckles, The restless life of a European Eccentric. Or an older one ( don't know if there is in English): Oscar Wertheimer: Christina von Schweden
Thank you I will tomorrow for sure
How come I am just watching this
Where can i download it?
Perhaps if I bite my lips throughout this wonderful movie, I'll get through it dry-eyed...
The whole movie I thought somehow the girl she liked was gonna become “the girl king” I’m so stupid
this movie is amazing :)
This is an extra ordinary love story of a lesbian queen fell inlove with a straight girl.
Terminan juntas

Wow! Looks very good!
WOW , It looks exciting
anybody know the trailer music?
Long live kristina
It's cute how in these lesbian flicks all the lesbians are Lipstick Lesbians, when IRL Kristina was not that attractive. The only ones that say she was a lesbian are feminist 'scholars' and Louis Crompton. Aside from that, it seems to be the usual cliche of repressed lesbians fighting back against their conservative foes. Nevermind the fact that Kristina converted to Catholicism - which was *so* homophobic - and was buried in Rome. You can read as much pro-gay literature that asserts she was accepted as much as you like, but you also can't argue that an allegedly homophobic and hateful institution would allow a known lesbian to be buried on its premises.
Like Queen Elizabeth of England, though she died a virgin she must automatically be a lesbian. I already know where this is going.
"Aside from that, it seems to be the usual cliche of repressed lesbians fighting back against their conservative foes." ---> No, not that much, it's pretty okay. The movie is not too anachronistic on that point. The trailer is a bit misleading though.
What is the title of the song in the trailer???
i love queen Christina of Sweden 😊
Nekoko Nyan Even thought she was a traitor to her country?
ان كان للحب معني فانت الدليل.....رائع
this looks gooooood
Can't wait to see this
This is a good film, I was watching it at the weekend and it resonated with me. Good story and well acted. Again it's sad that it would seem that the real power behind the throne was in the hands of both men and religion and that women were mere pawns to be used in power games.
looks soo good.
good
So, did someone just read all of "rose of versailles" and just made a movie out of it?
Wasn't there already a movie in the 70s based on manga? I watched only cartoon series.
In italiano perfavore
btw that one girl looked sooo much like alyson michalka its sick.
chaosdream1 osyM
Great
Was she actually gay tho?
1:10 She isn't a fan of Sweden, it seems.
This movie has terrible ratings but everyone here seemed to like it. I'm not sure if it's something I'd be into?
I just watched it. The setting and the characters are interesting, but the movie's pacing really bothered me. There were several unnecessary scenes that added nothing to the story (stuff like Kristina wearing male clothes, hopping and twirling in a corridor, running back and repeating... like... wut?), but at the same time the movie likes to skip forward with little warning.
I also personally felt the love story between the queen and the handmaiden to be a bit forced. It's basically "I order you to undress in front of me, I order you to come to bed with me, I didn't give you permission to leave" etc. Not something that gives me warm fuzzy feelings, for sure.
All in all it was an interesting film, even if I was expecting a little bit more from it. :>
Thank you!!
it's great
Haprilona Christina wearing males clothes were necessary in my opinion since that's a pretty important part of the Queen's history to partly show how manly she was
people are only watching this because of the lesbian twist lol..., The end😞..., ah...
🏳️🌈🌈💜
i saw this movie but not do for me.
the two girls.. together?
Nhé...
intresting movie , i wonder if is this true to life? if yes? damn their queen was hot!
+Bo Tamsin Queen Kristina was real, she was the daughter of Gustavius Adolphus II, aka the Lion of the North, one of Sweden's greatest war kings. Though, I haven't seen this version of her story, so I have no clue how close it is to the information we have on her.
I haven't watched the movie but historically she was far from "hot" as you described it...
She was actually far from attractive. Her shoulders were uneven and her back was hunched. She didn't really care about her looks like other women. She just liked to study a lot (despite getting barely any sleep or rest) and wore men clothing and acted like a man. She didn't care about her hair so she didn't brush it and it became so tangled that she ended up shaving her head and started wearing men wigs. And she wasn't really a lesbian, she fell for some men as well as women (the castle staff didn't like for the women that came to the castle to stay for long because they didn't want Christina to grow any kind of attraction or closeness with them, and it worked well since the only women that she had rumors of being in a relationship with were the girl in this movie and about 2 or 3 of the other women that stayed temporarily
*One of the worst biography's movies, many of Lesbian emotional scenes, make sure when watch it there's no kids around*
This movie has potential but it's a bit choppy at times. 1933 Queen Christina was better.
I'm waiting lol
I’m reading a book about it. This seems.... *video plays to lesbian porn* nvm..
this movie did an amazing job of disrespecting King Kristina. It's not an LBGTQ film. Kristina wasn't gay.
Bad movie
looks so sucky. not going to watch
disgusting movie
+lydia k right like gross, you see that guy all over that girl!?
like breeders can you not?
jenny kon don’t watch it lol ur issue is simple
Finally a good movie about this extraordinary Swedish queen
