    Swap out the back ties for some brown grosgrain ribbon and the bulk under the skirt will disappear. I'm making a bunch of these for my pregnancy wardrobe too, and just using cotton. I can double up two layers and wear pregnancy leggings underneath and I am plenty warm might be worth making a lighter version for winter anyway! 🥰

      Make one a bit longer out of white or cream with eyelet lace at the bottom edge and wear it as a peekaboo slip in the winter and as a skirt in the summer.

    Wow what a gorgeous skirt! Btw I'd recommend using a tailor's clapper (or a rectangular block of wood) to press down on thicker fabrics after ironing until it cools, I found it does wonders on getting my wool garments crisp and well pressed. I learnt the idea from Bernadette Banner's video collab on a tailor's pressing techniques

    Grosgrain ribbon or twill tape works really well for the straps! I understitched twill tape to my 18th century skirt I made and it reduces so much bulk with the ties. You can still have a sleek waistband with the fashion fabric but a low profile waist tie with the tape. Gorgeous job, I love this!

  • @silkehuybrechts7832

    I would definitely change the back ties to a lace or hook and eye closure, to elimate some of the bulk. I think this skirt would be lovely in a good quality linen, which would be wearable almost all year round. 😍

    I was big pregnant with my first over the winter and instead of getting a new coat, I created a panel out of wool coating and flannel that buttoned into the buttons of my coat, that way I just got the little bit of extra room I needed without needing a new coat.

    If you find the waist ties to be too bulky, you can replace the back waist tie with a rayon gros grain ribbon with a snap or hook and eye closure. If the front waist seems to bulky, you can replace it with either the Gros grain or a complimentary fabric that is lighter weight and easier to tie.

  • @Woeschhuesli

    Interesting choice. Skirts are usually problematic because as the tummy grows, the front lifts up. My girls were born in March, January and November and I wore a couple of A-line dress, overalls, giant sweatshirts over leggings - and a wool cape. I‘m curious to hear how you get on with a skirt IRL!

  • @BarbieMrqz
    @BarbieMrqz 6 місяців тому +4

    Beautiful skirt and so versatile! Though, the back straps in the front do make it a little bulky as you mention, I would add button holes to the back of the front waist band in two points maybe, and then add several buttons on the front straps so that it can be adjusted to the growing belly

  • @juniperjr2017
    @juniperjr2017 6 місяців тому +2

    Very cute skirt! I've made a few 18th-century style skirts at the beginning of my sewing journey. I would also echo the other comments on using a couple of hooks and eyes for better adjustability. Top-stitching the ties may help them flatten out too.

  • @LK-ir2pg
    @LK-ir2pg 6 місяців тому +5

    I just made a corduroy version of this skirt! But I used buttons instead of the ties. I definitely feel like the buttons was nice for the underneath layer just for bulk sake. This was so fun to see what we did differently. I didn’t do pleats, I did basically a circle skirt instead. Mines for maternity too, but I definitely think it doesn’t have as much size variation as the ties do!

  • @apalehorsenamed_death2849

  • @elephantfiesta

    You could absolutely swap out the backs ties for ribbon or even do a single button to cut out the bulk of ties all together. Also, when you're ironing the skirt, while the fabric is still hot and malleable, trying pressing down on it with something heavy and hard, like a piece of wood or even a large heavy book. This will help reduce the bulky look and help you get those crisp edges.
    Overall, I love the look of the skirt, and I think a matching cape would create a lovely vintage maternity set!

    You could add a small lacing panel like that skirt, (which I've seen so many times) or you could even add buttons and button holes every 1/2-3/4" ( or 1-2cm) or snaps along the ties you've made so that it will be adjustable as it is, but less bulky. You could even just add them as you need them so they end up just right.

Need to just sew in closer hook in the back. Can have between -10 to -30 under christmas so going places me want warm legs with option skirt or dress under and still stay warm. And not use plastic thermo ones that also so short

    I used two hoooks and then little pairs of thread loops at half inch intervals on some of my adjustable skirts instead of waist ties to reduce bulk. Lacing also works well, I just put eylets in the pocket edges and use some herringbone tape.

    I made a split tie skirt for my autumn skirt this year. I put in a lot of overlap to make sure I could handle possible winter weight gain. I also worried about the bulk of a tie under the skirt. When you mentioned you don't expect your waist not to increase I laughed! I thought the same, but currently 39 weeks pregnant I can tell you your waist is going to increase. I had a narrow waist and tummy before getting pregnant. During pregnancy my tummy size didn't increase much during first and second trimester. But boy once third trimester started boom there was the belly. My waist has increased almost 15 cm, while my belly circumference only increased 9 cm so far, almost like the love handles on the sides disappeared and moved to the front for baby haha

    Im sorry if this question has been asked already, but will you be making the baby’s clothes? I know I’d love to see some baby clothes being made ❤

    @ShannonMakes has two videos on the Coquelicot skirt pattern you were referencing (it has the lacing at the front under the front panel). The first video is located here: ua-cam.com/video/Cz8o0qJUWC8/v-deo.html and the second one here: ua-cam.com/video/kbLWWQqXmYw/v-deo.html . Hope this helps!
