I work at a school success center and we use ‘foundational and complex’ rather than ‘easy and hard’ bc things are difficult the first times! You’re right also that it’s hard to extend ourselves grace. The skirt is lovely and it seemed like an excellent learning experience.
This adjustable waistband is the type that used to be inside of children’s trousers and now I’m thinking about how magical that would be in adult trousers 😂
My partner bought black pleated trousers at UNIQLO and they have got this mechanism inside, it is genius! (..since I am able to also wear those now haha)
I'm really glad that you show your mistakes because they're not really mistakes they're just science. You're testing out different ways of doing things and then when you don't get the outcome you want now you have more data.
I'm self taught when it comes to sewing. I've learnt from UA-cam and just doing it. And patterns that I haven't made myself are the most confusing thing ever for me. I'm also ADHD so that might play into it as well. I've yet to try pleats or tucks or anything like those yet. I normally use the term "mock up" for my test garments. my flavor ice cream flavor is mint chocolate chip. Even, more so if it has fudge swirls.
Next time for a blind hem, try using a blind hem presser foot. It lines up the fabric so that the thread picks up as little of the fabric as possible for virtually invisible stitches consistently. I actually taught myself how to do a blind hem just last week and have been practicing through trial and error. You may have to fidget with the stitch length and width to make sure the thread actually catches the fabric (that’s been my main issue) but it’s really easy to just go over the parts that you missed, since no one is seeing the inside stitches anyways. Not sure what model you have but my singer heavy duty came with one. Excited to see your progress!
I just found your channel and am binge-watching all of your videos and even though this is an old one, I just wanted to mention: I am absolutely here for the journey, for the enthusiasm, the creativity. Love your videos, "mistakes" included. Thanks for sharing!
The dream skirt I've always pictured in my head looks just like yours! I've attempted making it three times and still haven't really worn them because I find so many design/construction mistakes in them. This was an insanely good make! Congrats
When I learned to quilt (my great aunt and mother taught me) I didn't understand exactly what I was supposed to do, despite their thorough instructions, and it looked so easy when they did it...but when i did it i found it extremely difficult, confusing, frustrating...and i felt like it looked like trash. I cried every single day i worked on any quilting project. Both my aunt and my mom would remind me that it was a new skill for me, but one that they had been working on for longer than i had been alive. It helped me a lot when they pulled out thibgs they gad made and showed me their "mistakes" so i always appreciate when someone shows the struggle. ❤ it encourages me to keep at it and reminds me that I will eventually learn the skill and be happy with what i create
ohhhh that sounds like such a rough learning journey!!! but new skills do take quite a lot of 'growing pains' before they become enjoyable sometimes. i hope you keep sewing!!
Your frustration with the zip is very relatable ❤️ I have moments like that with sewing all the time. We put so much pressure on ourselves to figure things out right away or be perfect at something really quickly, but that’s neither fair nor realistic. Humans have been wearing clothing for millennia. That’s a long time for people to come up with all kinds of snazzy techniques. It’s gonna take us some tries to master techniques that took hundreds of years to be developed 🙃 My favorite flavor of ice cream is cookies n’ cream 😋
"it's hard to apply that grace and understanding to yourself" -- oof, I hear you. as a recent subscriber to your channel, though, allow me to echo the sentiment that I love seeing your whole process! one of my other favorite youtube creatives, kathleen illustrated, always shows her entire process - mistakes and all - and I think there is so much value and inspiration in that for those of us with the same hangups about perfection. thank you!!
i recently was making a crochet cardigan and even though it was incredibly straightforward, i kept messing up the most basic of things. i spent almost 7 hours one day just working on it, messing up, and fixing it. i came out of it exhausted and a little disheartened. the clip in this video where you discuss how frustrated you were after trying to figure out that zipper felt SO relatable and validating. i'm really glad you included it!!! the skirt is amazing! im tempted to make one now.... my favorite ice cream is a flavor from a local shop called, and it's called 'mozart'. it has chocolate ice cream with pistachio and marzipan bits. though i think the mix of those two actually tastes like matcha! its soooo good, but they don't have it very often
ohhhh i'm sorry you had this feeling too - it's SO ANNOYING!!! Thanks for the encouragement (so kind) you should! also that sounds soooooo gooooood - i love nothing more then local ice cream stores that get funky with the flavours
loved your final reflection! I watch your videos mainly because I learn through how you fix your mistakes!! I love seeing my learning process reflected on someone else, It makes me feel a million times better about my own mistakes, so please don't stor sharing them 💚
Aw thank you mate. I'm so glad the mistakes are somewhat helpful... when they happen I often wonder if I should even include them haha! I'll keep them in just for you!
In Argentina there's a sweet spread called dulce de leche, close to milk caramel. So, naturally, there's an ice cream of that flavor. My favorite ice cream flavor is dulce de leche granizado (adding "granizado" to an ice cream flavor here means it has tiny chocolate chunks). I think that flavor is the baseline to know if an ice cream shop is good. If they make a good dulce de leche granizado, then I know I can trust the rest of the flavors.
Argentina milk jam !!! the BEST BEST FLAVOUR IN THE WORLD!!!! That sounds simply divine. hahaha I also have the same thought about the quality of an ice cream store depending on if they do a good dulce!!!
You did so excellently! I was just about to comment that what you’re looking at is a lapped zipper, and you figured it out by yourself! Also, for future reference, the piece you’re referring to as a fly would more accurately in this context be called an underlap, I think. A very good idea when you don’t want your side zips to pinch your skin! ❤ Also, French Vanilla forever.
Raspberry gelato. Please keep sharing mistakes and fails, projects that don't turn out, projects you need to step away from, etc. As a new sewist with a room filled with toiles (and very few completed projects) it's sooo nice to see even accomplished sewists make errors and get frustrated.
I think your zipper turned out great! The first time I installed a fly front zipper on a trouser mock-up, I managed to install it backwards lol. Even after practicing on that mock-up, the fly on those trousers was…not great. But many pairs of trousers later, I can manage to do it well enough as long as I have my preferred instructions in front of me! I’ve always used Claire Schaeffer’s couture fly instructions from Threads magazine, but she recently posted a video demonstration, so if you’re ever looking for a great fly tutorial I highly recommend hers!
EDIT: I came back. The skirt turned out so good! I'm glad you persevered. My favorite flavor of ice cream is cherry vanilla. Happy Monday. It's almost 11PM on a work night, but I swear I'll come back to finish this video in the morning!
thank you so much for sharing this process even though it's hard as a creator on youtube. it is literally so inspiring to watch your realistic progression and hear how you work through things. and honestly the struggle looks soooooo worth it, the skirt turned out amazing!!😍💜✨ (I have been getting this blueberry cobbler ice cream that is too expensive but I can't resist it's so good lol)
Pink bubble gum. Nicely done. Fly front zippers are a nightmare. I finally learned how to do them by reverse engineering a pair of vintage Tripp pants. The fly in that pair was put in in a very simple way. However, everytime I want to put in a fly front, I have to look at those pants and read my notes all over again. Love this skirt!!!
Loved this. I’m very much a let’s see what happens kind of sewer as well. I’ve definitely been at the what the heck is happening this shouldn’t be so hard stage so many times. I’m very happy that you show the whole process and empower the rest of us to make mistakes! Fabulous job❤️
oh hello hello! i hope you are well & your projects are going GREAT! hit me with your fav flavours of ice cream in the comments for me my current fav is pear & rhubarb from messina in a waffle cone but other long term favs are dulce de leche (messina is yum & so are the magnum minis) AND yoghurt and caramel from messinsa is also a WIN lemme know, I love sewing and I also love ice cream
Hello! I am from Turkey. Turkey has a famous ice cream. Maras ice cream. My favorite ice cream is Maraş ice cream. If you come to Turkey, I recommend you to taste it.
Love it! You did great! I think it’s great that you share your process honestly even when you don’t get it “right the first time”😊 and my favorite icecream flavour > dark choc & salted caramel ❤🍦
Grape! but it's so hard to find so I'll default to cake party ice cream which I just purchased (it's "frosting flavoured" ice cream with sprinkles and vanilla cake bits. It's amazing). Love the skirt and the whole process behind it! So inspiring 😊
The final skirt is perfection! I am struggling with making a waistband for a pleated skirt i made out of two other skirts! I gotta learn from you and practice practice practice. My fave ice cream flavor is coffee!
Chocolate. In so many ways you remind me of my much younger self (including the shape of the glasses). Back in my younger years there was no Internet or Google to look things up. You figured it out...or you didn't. If you were lucky you had a pattern or book to consult. I have never seen the fly zipper or the elastic waist underneath the strip of fabric, so those were very interesting to me. Regarding the waistband and doing it the "right" way, in my opinion the right way is any way that works. It may or may not be the conventional way, but if it works and looks good, it's right.
Lovely skirt!! And can’t help but wonder… did you make these orange shorts you’re wearing at the beginning? Need to know how to make these😭 btw, my favorite flavor is hazelnut!! 🥰
Watching this video from start to finish with each struggle you had, has made it less scary for me to give this a try - it's made the idea of starting...less of a mountain. So I'm down for all the mistakes being documented for your benefit as well as mine.
I hope you try to recreate the true vintage tennis skirt too! My favorite ice cream flavor is a classic strawberry, in a waffle cone so it feels like it's a pie ☺
I really love the look of pleated skirts, but my waist to hips ratio is so high, I still haven't figure out how to make it work ! Reaaly cute skirt on you and it's nice to see the problems you faced :)
I didn’t see any comments about it so I have to say, your glasses are everything!! They look so good with your face and hair! Makes me want to get some 80s like glasses too haha
For that french word i'm not sure what you mean, is it 'toile'? That just means 'cloth' or fabric. What you mean though is a 'mockup sample', in short 'mockup'. Even here in Germany most people use that. As for the zipper, oh the frustration, i know it just too well. And seam ripping it up, stitch by stitch. Btw, there is a way faster way to seam ripp it than the way you (and apparently most people, including myself in the past) do it, you can seam ripp it in one single swoosh. There is a nice quick video about it, called 'the correct way to use a seam ripper (with the red ball!)' by Cucicucicoo. Though of course it's just the fastest way. Very much recommend it, it will save you so much time, nerves and sweat. The skirt turned out so lovely anyway, you're doing a fantastic job as a sewist. Keep doing it.
The other meaning of 'toile' is 'an early version of a finished garment made up in cheap material so that the design can be tested and perfected'. It does also mean cloth though! OOOh sometimes when I try and seam rip in a single swoosh I get my fabric all messed up hahaha - I'm a cautious unpicker!! Thank you so much - I really appreciate it! And thank you for watching
Carly is correct. Just like in the states some people call their toile or mock up “a muslin”… which is of course the fabric it’s often made from, muslin. It’s self referential.
I actually have no idea!!! I think it's a rayon/polyster blend or something like that..... not a natural fibre but SO LOVELY to wear. Has a good weight to it which I think is a favourite part of the skirt for me.
Last week i did a pleated skirt and i also was like is just a pleated skirt with a side zipper but I had to re do it so many times 😢 it turned out fine but i did an invisible zipper i wish i saw your video earlier so i coukd copy the zipper that you did looks very cool
Absolutely stunning skirt sweetheart. Also take the pressure off yourself and be another imperfect human being who makes mistakes all the time. The power of Grace is awesome and I am sure you show grace to everyone in your life so why not yourself sweetheart. ❤😊🙏

That waistband elastic is such a simple trick but so useful, thank you so much ! The skirt looks amazing 👏🏻👏🏻
it is LIFE cHANGING!!!!!
It's nice seeing that you have sewing ups and downs! Reassuring for my own sewing journey
I REALLY DO hahahah (VERY NORMAL)

I didn't :((( I caved and bought these from Ghanda 2 years ago when I went with my little sis! YUM!!
Looks great and worth the hassle and it’s great to add skills as you go xx
I love ricotta and sage flavoured gelato, divine combination.
How did you make your starry hairband? Are they just two stars attached to a hairband?
Is the blue top at the end one of your makes? Would love to see how it’s constructed

What brand is that hidden elastic waist skirt !
Great video
thank you so much!
as someone who exclusively wears pleated skirts, this is a slay
coming from a pleated skirt human, this means a lot
Would you make a video on the journey of buying sewing machines? As a sled though student myself I want to assess when is time to upgrade. Thank you!
oh yes!! I am actually looking for a new machine atm so I can definitely talk about this!
@@fromcarlyb thank you ✨

I love your videos so much Carly 💗
Right now, Magnum Euphoria or Sunlover. Also, you might want to try a blind hemming guide.
Hi, what is the fabric of the second skirt? The pleat sewing on the first skirt is so interesting. 😮
