I always thought Dutch was originally European. From the Netherlands or Germany... These immigrants were often called Dutch or Dutchman at that time.

Dutchs father is Dutch, his mother American or Pennsylvania Dutch. Dutch and Arthur are loosely based on Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid. Butch being the mentor to the younger Sundance.
