just think, games development was so affordable back in 2005 that they could make a 3d beat em up for The Nightmare Before Christmas with the movies cast. Now if we get a licensed game if its not a crappy phone game then it's a Lego tie in unless it's Batman or Star Wars
*"DMC and Bayonetta took game mechanics from a Nightmare Before Christmas action beat-em-up game."* That's a sentence I never thought I would say. It's the same team, but still. Mind. Blown.
Pretty much this, a sudden boom in merchandise before or after KH2, and you can blame Hot Topic for that too. NBC was pretty popular in Japan already I think, I found plenty of Japanese merchandise during the early 2000s on various websites.
I have, at home, two of the foot-tall Jack figurines which came out exclusively in Japan. They're still in the bubble-packs, but they look like a lot of fun to display. Their main "collect 'em all" feature is that each one has a different head, and I think you can swap the heads between bodies, because each body also looks a bit different (hands, posture, etc.)
Christian WS Ah, DMC4 ain't that bad. I mean it's really short and it's really crappy how Dante's storyline is pretty much all recycled content, but at least the combat is good.
Ghost Rider is another DMC clone that I say is worth playing. The soundtrack is quite good but it's been a while since I played. There was a Van Helsing DMC style game but I haven't played that.
I've played the Van Helsing game, it's great. He uses his grappling gun like Nero's Devil Bringer, and you can continue shooting bosses while they choke you to break free.
In the early 2000s, Gothic style was on the rise and hit its mainstream peak with teenagers around the same time this game came out - 2004. That's when you saw all those Hot Topics open up and Nightmare Before Christmas was very popular with that crowd. There was a resurgence of its licensed products, so it really shouldn't be a surprise that a couple of games came out at that time too.
The Nightmare Before Christmas had always been huge in Japan, though. That might be why. That, and Kingdom Hearts gave it a global resurgence. As for the Gothic stuff... I have my doubts that was the cause of it. Goth has been around since the late '70s and early '80s... I see it more as lucky coincidence.
This was actually one of my favorite games as a kid, I never actually made any connection between it and DMC though now that it's been brought up I can't believe it never occurred to me.
If you thought Nightmare before Christmas Devil May Cry was a weird combination, you haven’t seen Magical Mirror Starring Mickey Mouse which is a Point and click Resident Evil game starring Mickey Mouse
This is really sad, your uploads haven't been showing up on my subscription for at least 6 months. I checked out your channel by chance like 10 minutes ago just to find out that i've missed 6 months of videos.
I bought this game years ago. I play it almost every Halloween and Christmas. As a fan of both Devil May Cry and Nightmare Before Christmas, I think it is worth whatever fraction price you can find these days. It's a charming, good looking beat-em-up from one of gaming's most important eras.
The interest in The Nightmare Before Christmas then was because it was being released (or re-released) localized in DVD format, probably for the first time, with much fanfare - I was touring Japan around then and I remember how much ads and merchandise were around. Thanks for the video, I always wondered about that game!
I really like those little SMT & Persona music that I can barely hear in some of your videos, hopefully one day we'll have a video about a Megami Tensei game.
Played it when I was young and as a result I of course remember it quite fondly. I especially loved the musical bits. Also it even had an original song that was actually pretty good?!?!? It legit sounded like something that could've come out of the movie itself. Like damn, that takes talent.
It was interesting to hear your thoughts on this game. i think RebelTaxi also covered this and complained about some of the mechanics like the save feature and of course the repetitive gameplay. but either way, Good Vid Brit.
I want them to stop acting like sengoku basara doesn't completely destroy samurai warriors mechanic wise. They really need to get that game out there properly.
MAN this is one of those games i remember playing with my sister but i feel like nobody else remembered/cared about it... so good to see someone else enjoyed the game to an extent!
I love it when developers reuse ideas and refine them in other games. Reminds me how Dylan Cuthbert reused a mechanic in the rather controversial Star Fox Command and implemented it in his original game, Pixel Junk.
I played this game religiously as a kid, I'd assume maybe jack could only walk in the Japanese release as a more stylistic choice of keeping him in tune with the music, all of jacks animations were very stylish, he had class. wouldn't be surprised if his combat walk synced up nice with the music. the combat areas were also rather small, and your slime had long reach which would help with your slowness
my favourite part of that game is when the clown on a unicycle is running around town screaming on fire, and you can be santa jack and throw him a present. Jack's like "marry christmas!!" in a big deep confident voice and the clown is just like "AAAAAAAAAH HEEEELP AAAAAAAAH!!!!!" and jack's animation ends and he blankly stares at the clown die on fire
Yeah, gonna go buy this asap. Not only am I a die hard Nightmare Before Christmas and Devil May Cry fanatic, but so is my kiddo. Thanks for showing off how cool this actually is, otherwise I would have never looked into it beyond the title (which I've known about for years, by the way... just had no idea it was even remotely awesome...)
Hell, I remember March 2005. I was at Cherry Creek Mall in Denver.... heading for the Gamestop I knew what I was looking for... *Devil May Cry 3* Picked it up. Played it. Changed my life. I'll get an ISO of Oogie's Revenge. Might as well check it out. I'm starved for an action title these days.
Nightmare Before Cry Devil May Christmas Honestly this being Capcom I saw the trailers, saw the "draw in souls for upgrade points" mechanic and said NBC-Onimusha. But now I'm really seeing the DMC echoes too! Great job (not that you need me to tell you that, the views speak for themselves)
LOL I'm always happy to see you review another hack and slash, but Ninja Gaiden is the one I want to see you review more than any other game. Hopefully, you'll talk about the other ports for it as well. (specifically Ninja Gaiden Sigma)
I'll never forget going into Gamestop asking the guy that works there if he had a game called "Jessie the devil" or something related to Halloween and he told me the only Halloween based game was Nightmare Before Christmas, Btw I was looking for Jersey Devil from PS1 that was very rare at the time or still is lol
Damn I stumbled upon your channel recently and I'm surprised that UA-cam didn't recommend me this channel long ago. You post some good content and raise valid points in your videos you just earned a new subscriber
If I had to guess, they didn’t have the other holiday worlds be apart of the game because Tim Burton was against sequels involving other holidays. But I feel they were still able to make a wonderful story and a very suitable sequel to the classic film.
I know I'm a little late to comment on this but in regard to your question at the end: I'm pretty sure these were intended as cash-grabs to coincide with Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D airing in theaters. My high school buddies and I carpooled thirty miles out of town to see it. I still have my halloween green 3d glasses from the event. I'm pretty sure my viewing them as cash-grabs is why i never got around to trying them. I'm glad you made this video because I had no idea the gameplay is just DMC: I need to make some new investments.
Uggggggh NINJA GAIDEN REVIEW IS ON THE HORIZON, OH GOD. I don't know when it'll be done, but Im super stoked for it! Ninja Gaiden is my favorite action game of all time.
Saw someone post about this game on twitter. I have never heard of this game. I get off twitter and immediately get on youtube and this is in my recommended.
I can't believe they rebooted Devil May Cry twice.
Trice.
Turbo Button and they only got it right the first time
You mean 3 times with the ghost rider game for ps2
coco :\_/: i played that, its more like god of war
Kuribohchaos8 ikr lol
I'm blown away with the DMC4/Bayonetta connection. Just wow.
just think, games development was so affordable back in 2005 that they could make a 3d beat em up for The Nightmare Before Christmas with the movies cast.
Now if we get a licensed game if its not a crappy phone game then it's a Lego tie in unless it's Batman or Star Wars
And even then... how many Lego Batman and Lego Star Wars games are there?
true but sad, I'd rather have a 10 good star wars games with ps2 graphics, rather than 20 mobile games and 1 AAA game with no content
*"DMC and Bayonetta took game mechanics from a Nightmare Before Christmas action beat-em-up game."* That's a sentence I never thought I would say. It's the same team, but still.
Mind. Blown.
The reason it got all these games in the mid 2000's is basically because it was a big hit in Kingdom Hearts`1 and 2.
Choc Ice that and the emo phase was pretty big back then.
Pretty much this, a sudden boom in merchandise before or after KH2, and you can blame Hot Topic for that too. NBC was pretty popular in Japan already I think, I found plenty of Japanese merchandise during the early 2000s on various websites.

Yeah I remember when I was "wierd" for liking this kind of stuff back then and now same shit just happened with Anime lol
Balta Bueno anime is slowly becoming more mainstream too.
The nightmare before christmas except jack has the yamato
If this video was actually released on Christmas, I'd say "The Christmas time has come, and so have I".
SetnaroX your last gift since you came to die
Kuribohchaos8 your deeds is done, your sins aside, as I can see the excitment burn in your eyes
SetnaroX Your present this year is a ticket..... straight to hell!
does he ever say soul whopper
Mark Brown Woah, didn't expect to see you here.
He's a good boy, but even he can't resist a bit of TGBS.
I always heard soul rubber
I heard soul robber
Do a video on Shedinja from Pokemon.
Coming back to this video is wild because DMC5 has the same revival using red orbs mechanic too
Can't wait for a Jack Skellington-themed character to appear in DMC6....
The Devil May Cry 5 we deserved, but not the one we got
the time has come and so have I
Last time I checked we only got four DMC games, haven't had a new one since 2008, thank god they haven't rebooted it
Four? Last time I checked there's only 3 DMC games and Capcom fucked up on the numbers
Christian WS Ah, DMC4 ain't that bad. I mean it's really short and it's really crappy how Dante's storyline is pretty much all recycled content, but at least the combat is good.
Oh yeah, I totally forgot that they skipped number 2, man, what was Capcom thinking?
Jimmy Joseph I think he's saying we should all forget DMC2. DMC4 was pretty bad though, just not a complete disaster
This is kinda awesome, actually. You can see in this game the groundwork that Capcom would use for the later titles in the Devil May Cry series.
"I like how you have to pay to come back after dying with points used for upgrades"
This would become a feature in DMC5.
SSS now stands for Spooky Scary Skeletons
I've never heard of this!? SERIOUSLY!?
Wow, if only Jack played like this in Kingdom Hearts...
I'd like to see Jack use that ghost whip in future Kingdom Hearts games
paying to revive after death with upgrade points... you mean like DEVIL MAY CRY 5??
Nightmare Before Christmas: Use points you've earned to revive
Devil May Cry 5: *USE ORBS YOU'VE EARNED TO REVIVE*
"Maybe this is the real DMC 2"
I really wished....
It sure does feel like an apology to it
Ghost Rider is another DMC clone that I say is worth playing. The soundtrack is quite good but it's been a while since I played.
There was a Van Helsing DMC style game but I haven't played that.
I've played the Van Helsing game, it's great. He uses his grappling gun like Nero's Devil Bringer, and you can continue shooting bosses while they choke you to break free.
icecreammouth
That sounds really cool lol.
The Ghost Rider game plays more like God of War but with the DMC ranking system, the soundtrack is pretty good tho
Nicolas Liz Lima
God of War is a DMC clone in it of itself so it doesn't really matter.
Fair enough, I've also seen some Van Helsing gameplay and man, they didn't even bother hiding their DMC influence
In the early 2000s, Gothic style was on the rise and hit its mainstream peak with teenagers around the same time this game came out - 2004. That's when you saw all those Hot Topics open up and Nightmare Before Christmas was very popular with that crowd. Speaking of DMC, heard Hideaki Itsuno is gonna announce a new game for 2017. Fingers crossed for DMC5.
GekkanShounen dmc devil may cry 2
you're going to be sorely disappointed then
GekkanShounen I hope I get disappointed then
GekkanShounen The DMC director and Dragon's Dogma director, to be exact, so probably a new IP. I love Dragon's Dogma, so I'm excited.
DMC5,DMC5 Please a DMC5 game!!!
I remember mocking my cousin for owning this game. Then I read the manual... Yeah, quite surprising especially for a licensed film game
The Nightmare Before Devil May Cry?
The Devil May Cry Before Christmas?
The Nightmare Has Come and So Have I
They litter your eyes, follow your soul, why do ya lie? Swallow your grace, fall to the ground, "nobody cares" is all you say to me.
Devil May Cry Before Christmas? Come on guys, it's right there.
The Dream Before the Nightmares that is DMC: Devil May Cry
Anthony Cedeno DmC is a pretty good game though....
This was actually one of my favorite games as a kid, I never actually made any connection between it and DMC though now that it's been brought up I can't believe it never occurred to me.
2:50 Coming back here after the release of DMC5
You can pay with upgrade points to revive in the game!
Wonder where the idea came from????
Had the same idea
So was he saying Soul Robber or Soul Wobber? Because one sounds much more threatening then the other.
Conflict1914 Rubber. As in how rubbery the weapon is.
Conflict1914 At least, I'm sure it's Rubber...
It's Soul Robber. You can see it on the screen @4:26.
It's either robber or rubber.
Rubber Soul
If you thought Nightmare before Christmas Devil May Cry was a weird combination, you haven’t seen Magical Mirror Starring Mickey Mouse which is a Point and click Resident Evil game starring Mickey Mouse
Solid review of a relatively obscure game
2:50 Did they take the "revive with red orbs" option from DMC V from Nightmare Before Christimas?!
Gonna tell my kids this was Devil May Cry
I can't believe they took this game's "Spend Resources to revive" mechanics and put it in DMC5!!!!!
I'm surprised this is a thing, but it's pretty amazing that it is.
...god dammit, where is DMC5?
Dmc 5 is right after corner now
Potidaon Annnnnd you were right lad
So dmc5's revive by using red orbs is from this too? Fucking god
And to this day, we're still waiting for Elliott at SGB to play this game for the channel.
This is really sad, your uploads haven't been showing up on my subscription for at least 6 months.
I checked out your channel by chance like 10 minutes ago just to find out that i've missed 6 months of videos.
This party's getting spooky lets scare!
So this is what happens while Sora falls asleep for a year after Chain of Memories, poor Jack had to fend off against darkness all by himself!
wow it also has the red orbs reviving mechanic from dmcv
2:50 and thats in DMC V now.... wow... jeses christ
Yep
I can't believe Jack is Nero's dad.
I once saw a playthrough of this game when I was 8 and I literally thought I hallucinated this game lol
I bought this game years ago. I play it almost every Halloween and Christmas. As a fan of both Devil May Cry and Nightmare Before Christmas, I think it is worth whatever fraction price you can find these days. It's a charming, good looking beat-em-up from one of gaming's most important eras.
Charlie, you hack, you stole my "After Christmas" joke from MY MIIIIIIIIIND!
OMFG were was this games when I was 10? Fuck it I would play it now
The interest in The Nightmare Before Christmas then was because it was being released (or re-released) localized in DVD format, probably for the first time, with much fanfare - I was touring Japan around then and I remember how much ads and merchandise were around.
Thanks for the video, I always wondered about that game!
2:50 hm...wait a minute!?
I really like those little SMT & Persona music that I can barely hear in some of your videos, hopefully one day we'll have a video about a Megami Tensei game.

Wow. The revival by orbs thing is now in devil may cry 5.
Yeah, why haven't you done a Ninja Gaiden video yet?
Ryan Gates ......you hack!
Holy shit did they take the pay to revive system from this game for DMC 5!?
It was interesting to hear your thoughts on this game. i think RebelTaxi also covered this and complained about some of the mechanics like the save feature and of course the repetitive gameplay. but either way, Good Vid Brit.
Huuhhhhhhhghh, I've been waiting so long for another Devil May Cry video from you! I swear I've watched all your DMC videos like 5 times each.
They should do a crossover game that teams up Jack and Dante.
Devil May Scream coming soon!
2:50 Did DMC5 rip off their revive system from here as well!?
This game should have a heaven or hell difficulty called trick or treat
I see you playing smt music there brit 👀
i cant believe im watching this again 2 years later but thank god cuz now i see at 2:50 the fucking spending upgrade points made a return in dmc5!!
I think everyone is starved for Hack en slashed beat em ups.
I even started playing OnechanBara.
Aya ya try odinsphere on ps4
furthestfromthesun. Looks fun. thanks
Hey, Z2 Chaos is actually pretty good.
I want them to stop acting like sengoku basara doesn't completely destroy samurai warriors mechanic wise. They really need to get that game out there properly.
Can't wait to make my own later in life tbh :D. It's my dream to make a great hack and slash with my game corporation.
I played this as a kid before I even fully understood what the movie was about lol
MAN this is one of those games i remember playing with my sister but i feel like nobody else remembered/cared about it... so good to see someone else enjoyed the game to an extent!
I just realized the SMT and Perrsona music in the background, good taste Charlie, good taste ;)
This went from funny to impressive really quick lol. Nice vid Bro!
Bang bang bang pull my Christmas trigger!
I love it when developers reuse ideas and refine them in other games. Reminds me how Dylan Cuthbert reused a mechanic in the rather controversial Star Fox Command and implemented it in his original game, Pixel Junk.

Was jack doing a Jojo pose?
BLESS ME WITH YOUR GIFT OF FRIGHT
Righteous cause on Halloween night!
my favourite part of that game is when the clown on a unicycle is running around town screaming on fire, and you can be santa jack and throw him a present. Jack's like "marry christmas!!" in a big deep confident voice and the clown is just like "AAAAAAAAAH HEEEELP AAAAAAAAH!!!!!" and jack's animation ends and he blankly stares at the clown die on fire
i bought the DMC HD collection during the steamsale and the very first thing i thought of when i played it was this game lmao
I actually fit right into every category that you recommended people play the game. So... Gonna hunt this one down at some point.
And then he got to Ninja Gaiden over a year later.
It fills me with joy that you put a Gurren Lagann OST song in here.
Devil May Christmas: The nightmare before the Cry
It Blrusred in a way
Action Beat 'em up?! You mean... JUST Action game
Hell, I remember March 2005. I was at Cherry Creek Mall in Denver.... heading for the Gamestop I knew what I was looking for...
*Devil May Cry 3*
Picked it up. Played it. Changed my life.
I'll get an ISO of Oogie's Revenge. Might as well check it out. I'm starved for an action title these days.
Nightmare Before Cry
Devil May Christmas
Honestly this being Capcom I saw the trailers, saw the "draw in souls for upgrade points" mechanic and said NBC-Onimusha. But now I'm really seeing the DMC echoes too! Great job (not that you need me to tell you that, the views speak for themselves)
THIS HALLOWEEN IS GETTIN CRAZY
Lets rock
Hey, maybe if we return to Halloweentown in KH3, we can see the other holiday worlds. It's still technically a hack and slash.
Very, VERY technically. KH is far more Action RPG than hack and slash in my book.
2:52 even DMC5 gets something from Nigthmare Before Christmas?
For some reason I just looked at the thumbnail before the title and already knew it has devil may cry involved with it.
8:35
Now, where have I heard that music before...
You wouldn't be a Persona fan by chance, would you?
LOL I'm always happy to see you review another hack and slash, but Ninja Gaiden is the one I want to see you review more than any other game. Hopefully, you'll talk about the other ports for it as well. (specifically Ninja Gaiden Sigma)
You should also check out Maximo vs Army of Zin, which is also a PS2 game made by Capcom.
This.. is a thing that exists? .... I want it.
The only DMC game I've completed is Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. :)
Would like to play this one, as a fan of the movie.
You probably recognised some of the music in this video, then!
Hello fellow Klonoa fan
Strange to find one of us out in the wild
>Props for using Nocturne background music
Ninja Gaiden is my favorite action game of all time.
lol idk if this is coincidences but doesn't DMC5 have the same feature if u die in a mission 2:53 that they were revealing?
Great stuff!
Always enjoy the videos and I never knew this existed!
Yo this game was a trip! One of those 'play and forget' games but it's good to remember it again
Damn I loved the soundtrack to this game. The music box version of "Sally's Theme" when you pass by Spiral Hill is just beautiful.
spending upgrade points to revive? devil may cry 5 has also ripped off nightmare before christmas :o
Every whip:
"Take it!, hah!, slam dunk!"
Saw someone post about this game on twitter. I have never heard of this game. I get off twitter and immediately get on youtube and this is in my recommended.
