    These were actually my shoes! Trenton and Heath did a wonderful job of restoring these. I wore these everyday for about two years and tried to keep up with them the best I could, but obviously was unable to. However, they brought these back to original condition. Great work gentlemen!

    Thanks for your thoughts on ace marks brand! It brings things closer to understanding the ins and outs of how it is built compared to similar shoe brands. I'm a big fan of ace marks and have alot of pairs of them in my shoe rotation and was wondering how they stacked up compared to others when it came down to build quality . Thank you for reviewing them!

    As a young guy just starting his career in finance, I found their Kickstarters and have fallen in love. I own 4 pairs (with 2 more coming from their most recent factory access campaign), all for about $180-$200 each. I think one of my other favorite UA-camrs over at Gentlemens Gazette said it best "Are these the best shoes money can buy? Heck no. But especially when they're at or below $200, they're sure a great way to start".
    I admit it I'm a fanboy about their brand personally. I absolutely know they're very "okay" shoes, but I love the look and it's at a price I need. It was very cool to see them taken apart and put back together again, I have a whole new respect for cobblers now! That is a master craftsman at work.
    (To those like me who get into men's shoes, the shoes are: black cap-toe Oxford, caramel brown full brogue Oxfords, oxblood penny loafers, the cognac double monk straps like in this video, and the two coming are a pebbled walnut horse bit loafer and my fun summer shoe of a woven chestnut slipper)

    Holy Moly, Rock & Rolly! Did that rascal play soccer in those poor monks??? You did a bang-up job of getting them back though. Interesting to find out that the heel blocks are not leather. Just got a pair of double monks from their latest kick starter and was let down that the soles are rubber and not leather. Gonna stick with BS from here on out. Could a deer bone have gotten those deep creases out? As always, thanks for the video guys

    • @TrentonHeath
      @TrentonHeath  5 років тому +2

      Brett Patrick We’ve been impressed with BS, particularly with what you’re getting at $200. As far as the wrinkles go, we probably could have gotten a lot of them out by wetting the shoes down completely, putting in some shoe trees and working the wrinkles out as they dry. Too much work for this video. A deer bone works better on shell cordovan.

    • @JayWalkerOnline
      @JayWalkerOnline 4 роки тому

      Ace Marks soles aren't completely rubber, just the toplifts and even then it's usually combination. The reason they do that is because having a 100% leather sole can be really slippery--entirely leather soles, including the toplifts, are sometimes called "suicide soles". It's actually a thoughtful touch.

    Those were really beat up. I own a pair of double monk straps from Ace Marks and they are hands down the most comfortable (for my feet) out of the box. To put into context my Beckett Simonons break in on my first day wearing, my Allen Edmonds take a couple of days longer, my Carminas are my most handsome shoes and take about 2 - 3 wears to break in. My Ace Marks sneakers though (I own 2 pairs) do take quite a big longer to break in to get to the point I could wear them without socks. Thank you again for taking these shoes apart and providing a review from a different and more professional perspective.

    Very well done! I noticed that you chose a black-colored polish at the end to deal with the scuffs. This got me thinking; would you please consider a video where you go into detail about which color creams and polishes should be used in which situations or based on the original color? I purchased the neutral colored Saphir creme to stay on the safe side and not ruin the color based on my ignorance. But with the variety of colors they sell, it would be nice to dial it in more. In the meantime, I'd still love to know why you chose the black for these ace marks. Thanks, again, for the great content!

    • @TrentonHeath
      @TrentonHeath  5 років тому +1

      dean uga You got it! We’ll definitely do some more videos where we get into more details regarding shoe cream and wax colors. With these shoes, they were very scuffed, and one of the shoes had some darker patina to it. In order to balance it out and make the other shoe look the same, I added darker wax. Wax pigment isn’t very strong, so it’s easy to work with them and add patina.

      I hope I didn’t throw people for a loop too much. Ace Marks makes nice shoes...primarily their upper leather. Very nice calf skin. Build quality wise, they’re a typical blake stitch. There are some Ace Marks selling for $425, which is craziness...and I’ll throw Magnanni, To Boot NY, etc into that craziness price range as well. For that same money or less, Cobbler Union or J Fitzpatrick are two that come to mind. Amazing quality, Goodyear welted, blind stitching on many styles, calfskin uppers, Spanish made.... Believe it or not, you could also thrown a lot of the Meermin’s in there. We’ve had a lot of them come through our shop, and while many of them are harder to break in, they are making beautiful shoes for around $200...many with JR soles. Again, a pair of Ace Marks should last you for years with care. There are just other brands giving a little more bang for the buck at that $200-$400 price range.

      For $300+, I would definitely get a pair custom made. Many super high-end brands take advantage of cheaper overseas mass production (made with Italian leather, but *_made in_* the Philippines, for example). Although this brand doesn't do that, they are still commercially produced at a rate that makes it difficult to ensure top; top quality, and at the very least, consistency depending on which factory or studio worker made them. I guarantee that you can get a much more durable, comfortable, and visually attractive pair of shoes if you go custom. The golden rule is just like if you were to get a tattoo: you'll want to check out the quality of their work before you have it done (first-hand if possible, because you can do wonders with Photoshop these days!). You can get a custom pair of plain-Jane leather shoes starting at around $150 and the price can go up quite a bit depending on the design, style, tooling, and maker. A higher priced shoe-maker doesn't necessarily mean they will craft a better quality pair than a less expensive maker, so do your research and pay attention to materials offered and very especially, the type of stitching they use. Also, for creative inspiration and to see some unique designs (in case you're considering a custom pair) check out paulfredrick.com. They're commercially mass produced overseas; like many other brands; and are overpriced, but you might like some of the ideas. Their designers are very talented, but a good custom maker can make you a pair in any style and particular look you want. I hope this helps! 🙂

I don’t believe the owner of these does. 2) put shoe trees in the shoes and then heat up the leather with a hair dryer and work the creases our 3) get the shoes completely wet, dry them off, put in shoe trees and then work the creases out as they dry.

    Ace Marks is the only brand that makes shoes in my size (5.5), so I'm stuck with them. Glad to hear they're on par with some of the others (minus the heel block, but what can you do when you're such a specialty size on a budget).

    • @mikalrain
      @mikalrain 5 років тому +5

      Friend, I have noticed on my travels in the South of Europe that wear smaller sizes (because they are shorter). You may find your solution there! :) Are you 5.5 US or UK? Myself, I'm 8 UK, but sometimes 7.5 or 8.5. It depends on the shoemaker and the model, so please keep that in mind. I just checked a couple for you that I know ship worldwide:
      CrownhillShoes.com - several models, especially the oxfords (5 US)
      Meermin.es - four oxford models (6 US)
      The size I listed are the smallest available. These are Spanish. There are more brands (Berwick, Spain -- contact them; Velasca, Italy -- contact them), but I only have so much time.
      Tip #1: You can do with a half size more by inserting the inlays from your favourite Asics/Nike running shoes. Tip #2: The brands that make shoes in-country will often not carry much stuck and, rather, produce as orders come in. This means that they may (I haven't asked) accomodate other sizes. You'll have to contact them and ask politely.
      My view is that brands that spend less on marketing (or none at all) give you more shoe for the money, because you are the one paying for that marketing .That's just something to consider. In other words, a shoe you haven't heard of (if you're US based) may be a better deal for less money.

    Great review! I have been looking through your reviews lately trying to determine what shoes I could go for for my wedding. I really want some that I'll be able to have on my foot for 14+ hours and will hold up to dancing and walking for pictures. I think I'm zeroed in on Allen Edmonds but do you have any suggestions for this use? TIA!!

    • @Baconatorz
      @Baconatorz 5 років тому +1

      Can't go wrong with Allen Edmonds IMO. Wear them around the house a few times to break them in before your wedding and you will fall in love with them. I like that when I buy Allen Edmonds I know i'm providing jobs for fellow Americans. You can watch factory tour videos on youtube and see how they are being hand stitched and made here in the US. I think in terms of price vs quality its very hard to beat Allen Edmonds, especially if you can catch one of their seasonal sales. You can also send them back to the factory to get resoled/refurbished if properly cared for its entirely possible for your son to wear the same pair of shoes at his wedding.
      After I bought my first pair of properly made dress shoes I'm sad I missed out all of those years. I'd suggest finding a local AE store to try on a few pairs.

      For $300, I would definitely get a pair custom made. 🙂
