Thank you so much, i just got back from a weekend fishing trip that i got completely skunked on. I thought it was the size of my flies or tippet but after watching this i realized the issue was my drift
In my view, it's pretty unlikely to be your tippet, especially if you are using floro. It's probably an 80% chance it was presentation. The other 20% could have been weather (I got skunked yesterday at a place I destroyed on Monday--I'm assuming it was the incoming storm, but who knows?), fly size/color, some combination, or something else we don't know about--maybe a river otter came through just before you and spooked everything. I hope you at least enjoyed getting out and about. Please let me how you do if you change stuff up, and good luck!
@abushinthewoods I'm not new to fly fishing, but I consider myself a new angler because I only get to fish moving water, maybe once or twice a year. This was the first time I did it on my own somewhere that wasn't a state park, and the fish are known to be very skittish. I think I'm just not stealthy or savy enough to trick them yet. That's why I love the sport tho, it's so multifaceted and every outing presents a different obstacle and an opportunity to learn.
really enjoy your simplified content! as a semi new fly fisher who only has gotten grayling so far, cant wait to try this stuff out once the ice melts here in norway :D
Wow, Norway! The internet is amazing. I've heard grayling are a really fun and underrated fish--I've never caught one but hope to this summer in Iceland. Thanks for watching and I hope this helps--please let me know how it goes and good luck!
it indeed is, i would reccoment a trip here though! ua-cam.com/video/utOOwAJA-7M/v-deo.html - where i have grown up fishing (but that is mostly pike), there used to be a freshwater species of salmon here but the swedes and their dams ruined that (atleast they're working on that now) @@abushinthewoods i'll make sure to update once i get some fly action :)
Great video! I’m going to try that extra “set” at the end of my drifts. You seem to fish the American a lot, but have you tried the Bear? Just found it and I’m trying to figure it out.
I tried it once from Dog's Bar. I caught some small, like 4" and smaller, fish, but I've been meaning to go back and see if I can't get into some larger fish. I wanted to do a series on fishing along the I-80 corridor, and to that end hit the Bear and the Yuba right off the highway, they were....not great and it kind of put me off. Maybe when the weather improves I'll try again. But it's hard for me to justify spending a day on those rivers when the American is right there and I know it's good. If only I was independently wealthy and could just explore all day everyday, then I wouldn't feel that way. Or maybe I would. Sigh. Good luck out there, I hope you crack the Bear code!
It can be really good. I've only fished it right through town once and didn't have any luck (and it was really busy), but I've done well up in the National Forest. There are also some creeks running into it that can be good, but the fish are predictably smaller.

For sure, the never ending learning curve is addictive.
Awesome video

Thanks! I guess I could try the American too since it’s closer and we’ve had okay luck there. @@abushinthewoods
