New upload, nice. Ratchet 3 is widely considered the best of the original trilogy. I think it comes down to the weapon selection, not only to you have good original guns like the hydra, you also have a lot of guns from the previous game. And unlike when Ratchet 2 did that, the throwback weapons don't absolutely suck in comparison. It's the one I've played through the most, probably at least 10 times throughout my life. It's just a really good game. With that said, this game had a very rough development cycle. Mandates had come down from Sony that Ratchet games and Jak games needed to come out alongside each other. So the 1 year dev cycle that harmed Jak 3 also applied to Ratchet 3, except unlike Jak, Ratchet was also tasked with making an online multiplayer mode to compete with Halo. This led to some the hardest crunch time Insomniac would ever do, and it shows in the game. Those horde type arenas where you fight alongside the Rangers? Yeah, those are multiplayer maps. They had to throw them in there with generic missions because they didn't have time to design actual levels. The levels that are there are also more linear, with less branching paths. It makes this the most combat focused game of the original trilogy. Which is fine, because the combat is excellent, but you can still feel that this one had a lot less time put into it. Like, did you notice there are no grind rails in Up Your Arsenal? I didn't until it was pointed out to me, which on the one hand is proof of crunch, but on the other hand is proof the combat is just that good. It's also why definitely should play Deadlocked. Since this is the last Ratchet video, at least for now, I want to say these dev facts come from The Golden Bolt youtube channel. His Ratchet videos are excellent deep dives into the development history of the games, and you should check them out if it at all interests you. Your fun fact for today, those underwhelming crate powerups? They exist because of alcohol, but not for the reason you might think. The story goes that one of developers told another that they wanted to do more with crates. He responded by saying that they'd been trying to come up with new crate ideas since the first game. He then said, "If you can come up with good new crate ideas, I'll buy you a case of beer." A week later, the jackpot and infernox crates were born, and the first developer walked away a case of beer richer.
Excellent comment man! Replaying the Original Ps2 titles now after maybe 10 years and i just finished the 2002 Original and had a blast already, cant wait to experience the others all over again! Cheers
I've been playing the original R&C games this week for nostalgia's sake and I wanted to see what other people thought about the games. I came across your first R&C video and after watching it I immediately jumped to your second and third vids on the series. You have solid reviews, (actually) funny commentary, good editing skills, and a new sub. Can't wait to see more (R&C and otherwise), keep up the great work !!
5:45 the green bolt boost boxes were on Florana first actually. Near the start of the level if you turn left after the first set of flies there's a large room with just bolt crates and the green box. Great video though! Loved hearing your thoughts on it :) galactic ranger missions were also my favourites! The banter between them was amazing and it felt like actual people on a battle field interacting with each other compared to the somewhat awkward & odd interactions on the Starship Phoenix
I haven't seen anyone else mention it in the comments, but those "Ninja Gnomes" are the Lawn Ninjas from Going Commando, in one of the infomercials for one of the planets in the game.
I always found the Lava Gun to be the most effective weapon in dealing most of the enemies and the early bosses. It's such a beast when it comes as an early weapon and it got better with its new upgrade, the Liquid Nitrogen Gun. Not only that, it has a great ammo count, and it's a good alternative if the Plasma Coil, the Rift Inducer, and the Bouncer are not available. The weapon itself is literal definition of "Spray-and-Pray" except the enemies does the latter. I honestly think the worst weapon in this game is literally the Holo Shield, since the Shield Charger exists, and the fact that the charger does the job better in protecting you. Second to this is the Infector, since the weapon is iffy to use, especially with its upgrade, the Infecto Bomb.
The lava gun was a neat idea and it had its useful applications, but I found myself mostly resorting to it when I didn't wanna use other, much better weapons. I would never describe it as a "beast."
Very good video! I played this one through out pretty much all of my childhood so my nostalgia hits hard when rating this game but I think overall it is actually pretty good, I mean the movement here has some minimal improvements from going commando which makes it so delicious to play, so yeah solid game
Considering the slingshot, gravity boots and skydiving sections, I really shouldn't have been as surprised as I was when Insomniac was announced to develop a Spider-Man game
17:45 I think I know what this is, the game only spawns a new ammo crate after the ammo drop is gone, not when the crate is gone So if you break multiple ammo crates, get more ammo of that type than you need, switch to a different weapon while leaving the old weapon full, you'll leave that ammo type just sitting on the ground You need to switch back to the old weapon, fire off a few shots to pick up the ammo, and then the ammo crates should start up again
I loved how many more and better color options there were for Ratchet's ship in Up Your Arsenal. I also liked the upgraded lava gun turning into the liquid nitrogen gun so much better than the meteor gun upgrade from Going Commando. However, I did think the usage of titanium bolts to buy character skins was pretty lame, especially since I loved the weapon mods in Going Commando so much.
Cmon now the inferno powerup was so fun in the arena. Idk how many times i was 1 hp or out of ammo and then the announcer says, "DID SOMEBODY SAY INFERNO!!!????" Then flip dodging my way over the mega turret beam, smashing open that crate and proceeding to go terminator mode because i gotta kill as many enemies as possible before the powerup goes away...... Also the whip yo. If you didnt know, you can throw that bitch. Something about throwing a blue whip around while backflipping over enemies is about as sick as it gets. Catch me using the blitz cannon, the whip, and the disc blade gun. All other guns besides the sniper are just to conserve ammo for me boys. Lava gun was cool too, was this referred to as the piss cannon by anyone else. When i was growing up if i asked a buddy if they had the piss gun they would know what i was talking about.
between the og rac trio i can't pick my favourite, they all had so much charm and atmosphere and cool weapons and stories definitely my favourite game series of all time
I can easily say which one is my favourite. Weirdly it's the first. It's the one game where every weapon has its use. Though the controls are weird and not great for a shooter. I'll accept that reality. It's also the best looking out of the three. It's the one that has the most detail, better colour choice and stronger art direction. With 3, most if the map is just open area as with hallways. Makes sense considering they didn't have much time to make the 3rd and had to rush things. So they used some multiplayer maps in the singleplayer
A note on the over-arching relation between the inept president being Sasha's dad being an important note and why Quark is just given a pass and allowed to command the Rangers: The president is so unbelievably inept that he genuinely believes what he sees on TV, believing Clank is the true hero due to the 'Agent Clank' TV show and believing Quark is a Mega-Hero from his earlier time as an over-hyped fake hero. The galactic rangers may be Sasha's force, but it's still in service of the president as the commander in chief and Sasha's father even if he is an idiot, hence Quark getting his pass. Dad said so. My head canon is the president put the galactic rangers together and funded the hell out of it as a gift to his daughter who wanted to be like the heros her father told her about growing up. Explains for me why it's only sasha and a bunch of robots until ratchet joins up, the president didn't actually intend for it to be a force taken seriously, until shit hit the fan on veldin and sasha accidentally recruits agent clank of all people.
I played through the trilogy recently and one thing i noticed was how basic the level design was compared to the first two games. The planets/levels were less interesting and felt a lot shorter too. I assume it was because there was more focus put on the multiplayer aspects of the game. UYA is still my favourite though, but not by as much as i originally thought
This game has one of the best NG+ I've ever played, I played through the game 3x times last time I played because getting all of the unlocks was so much fun
Even though I find Going Commando more polished, I prefer replaying this over it because Clank moves faster. In the first two games I honestly found his sections pacekillers, but giving him the BGAMD and breakables here makes them more tolerable for me.
It's the only Ratchet game I played as a kid and still my favourite. Most addictive and replayable. But the 2nd game comes close. The sewer crystal maze, Annihilation Nation arena combat and platforming, the weapon upgrade animation (that so many future games made worse), the soundtrack, the flow of gameplay. Perfect.
"I still do dislike the lava gun" *Clearly someone hasn't experienced the joys of turning enemies into piles of shattered ice with the liquid nitrogen gun.* Though if we're talking absolutely GOATed weapons, Miniturrets FTW.
HEY NERD, MARCADIA ISN'T THE FIRST PLANET TO INTRODUCE POWERUPS, IT'S FLORANA THERE'S AN ENTIRE ROOM DEDICATED TO FINDING OUT ABOUT THE BOLTS AND A MINI-GAUNTLET TO GETTING A FEEL FOR INFERNOX MODE Jokes and correction aside, good vimbeo tho.
Need an experimental super galaxy hopper thingy to get back to the Solana but can get a signal on the tv from different galaxies. Hmm, yeah, I guess that makes sense.
16:52 The first rule when making a bomb, is to always make 2 - Baron Praxis I know it's not a bomb, but my brain went to that quote xD (Also quote might not be acurate, I translated it from my language xD)
its true that it can still stand up even today!! its a great game with lots of weapons that you can use in many situations unlike some in ratchet 2 and older weapons remain evenly strong as the new ones. Although a trilogy that somewhat was rushed i think they really fixed some mechanics from previous entries.Anyways I love your commentaries keep it !!!
This one was always my favourite. I just love it so much. I pretty much use the liquid nitrogen gun for everything though. Best weapon in the series xD
So about the controls...lock strafe is objectively the best control scheme as it removes the need to press buttons to strafe and makes the controls a lot easier to get into, and it's the default in ratchet deadlocked. Speaking of which, yes, you should definitely play deadlocked. 4:45 What are you talking about!? that's not captain quark it's obviously captain OOOOOF :D
Both GC and UYA had an option in the settings for 16:9. It probably slices some things off the top and bottom, so keep that in mind. It never seemed to be an issue to me though!
Oh snap that’s right that slipped my mind for some reason 😂 shoot the 16:9 looks a lot better than I remember it on my tv for some reason especially the in game cutscenes well alright thanks
r&c3 is a ps2 game with an enormous lost potential. It's shadering is too pour, lack of enemy variety, plane textures, no enemy or weapon animations. The florana race couldn't make it to the end of the game. Great combat and weapon variety but... I don't know. I could say it could've been better than the original ratchet and clank. And I haven't even started to watch the video hahaha

Love the background insight!
Excellent comment man!
Replaying the Original Ps2 titles now after maybe 10 years and i just finished the 2002 Original and had a blast already, cant wait to experience the others all over again!
Cheers
Honestly it was my least favorite, followed the refinements of 2 sure but it was a bit of a downgrade as well.
Courtney gears is a certified childhood crush
I recall the multiplayer battles of Up your Arsenal the most. My cousins and I would spend HOURS playing it
The online of this game is still alive thanks to fan making a private server, same for deadlocked
That exactly I'll say, the fan server is called Horizons, and that's work really fine ! You can play with emulator or a real PS2
best speedrun game
best glitches
best skips
best game
best childhood
Best NG+ as well

the inferno box is found in florana as well found before you go in the 2nd room where there is a few boomarangs guys
I haven't seen anyone else mention it in the comments, but those "Ninja Gnomes" are the Lawn Ninjas from Going Commando, in one of the infomercials for one of the planets in the game.
Never heard someone say they didn’t like the lava gun in Up Your Arsenal
Yeah, that sounds crazy O.O
It was infinitely better than in Going Commando, that's for damn sure
liquid nitrogen gun my beloved 🥶💙
I love this game, its probably my favorite: i made an animated montage of it last week
Just recently 100%’d an it’s definitely still an amazing game. Crazy how incredibly well the OG trilogy and Deadlocked still hold up!

Mecha Ariana grande? My guy that’s mecha Britney Spears

Love how you skipped the super important cutscene with Mr. Gears
Not my best moment
Loving these videos from you keep it up. Will never get bored of listening to rac reviews
The inferno crates do lock you into melee while in effect. I know this because I played it the other week.

really nice video! always nice to see smth r&c3 related ^^
2:57 Just a small correction.
You do get the same exact room clearing effect when you level up Nanotech. You only get this every 10 levels, not 5.
Thanks for pointing that out!
I played through the trilogy recently and one thing i noticed was how basic the level design was compared to the first two games. The planets/levels were less interesting and felt a lot shorter too. R&C UYA is still by far my most favorite game. Every weapon i have is pretty much maxed, then my DeadLocked playthrough has almost every weapon V99
This game has one of the best NG+ I've ever played, I played through the game 3x times last time I played because getting all of the unlocks was so much fun
Short answer: Yes.
Longer answer: OH HELL YES!

Mf really compared Courtney Gears to a mecha Ariana Grande
those noids with the big lasers can be killed with the refractor gadget, aim the beams back at them and it kills them
What i wanna know is why did Clank have an apartment in a separate galaxy prior to the events of the second game?
Need an experimental super galaxy hopper thingy to get back to the Solana but can get a signal on the tv from different galaxies. Hmm, yeah, I guess that makes sense.
I loved playing this game as a teen.
Yes, Pyx, you’re gonna have to play Deadlocked. Imo it’s still as fun as it ever was haha. Great video as always!

Sad you didn’t show off the ryno in this game
the lavagun in rc3 for me at least was only ever usefull in the sewerage level
How do you play the game on current gen? Or you have a ps2/3?

how are you recording the ps2 footage without any black bars present
