  • "Mene, mene, tekel, parsin", is an Aramaic phrase found in chapter five of the book of Daniel, the story of Belshazzar and the handwriting on the wall. (Fun fact: this is where we get the colloquial phrase "writing on the wall.")

    mene (מְנָֽה) = numbered
tekel (תְּקֵ֑ל) = a half or 'divided' shekel
upharsin (וּפַרְסִֽין) = '"and Farsi" (the Persian language group)
The incoming Persians and Medes traded in Aramaic, ignoring Nebuchadnezzar's decree to trade in Akkadian. Aram, centuries earlier, had adopted the Canaanite alphabet, enabling them to trade out to India and to replace Phoenician in Mediterranean market places.
Hebrew had only survived as a religious language, and this tale marks the point at which Akkadian was relegated to a provincial tongue, with its kings displaced from the currency.
The success of alphabets in general also meant the writing was on the wall for Cuneiform, which had a long, slow death. Used in inscriptions into the C1st AD, but only made intelligible by being accompanied by Aramiac, Persian and, later, Greek translations.

It meant nothing to Balshazzar, but something to those aware of its literary and cultural context.

Thank you for such clarity. You seem to know much about ancient languages. Please elaborate more on: Hebrew, Amharic, Greek, Medes etc

@@abuyekaanuna6038 I recommend the book 'Empires of The Word' by Nicholas Ostler. It's a well referenced, scholarly work, but lays out the histories of the world's written languages in layman's terms.
Amharic, the language of Ethiopia, has features in common with Akkadian/Semitic languages, supporting the belief that its aristocracy descended from the Biblical Queen of Sheba and Solomon, with a shared culture extending back into pre-history/ pre-writing.

He wrote it that way so that Belshazar would sweat a little before his doom, knowing that the king and all of his people would not be able to understand what was written.

It is astonishing that you, with your academic background, give the impression that there is only one Aramaic version of this text, although there is actually a text-critical department in theology and the version of the text in the Septuagint is different and from my point of view makes more sense. In the Septuagint there are not four words at this point, but only three: ἠρίθμηται κατελογίσθη ἐξῆρται (Dan 5:17 LXT). This fits better with three three-part interpretations of Daniel and the terms are all different and make logical sense: counted, calculated/considered, removed.

In the standard version, I see ME'NE, MENE, TEKEL and PARSIN what is the significance of the apostrophe in the first word? It is a bit of loose extrapolation Daniel made of the text?

Mene Mene Tekel, Upharsin. not parsin. It means "Weighted two times, and found not heavy enough." It is about the insistence with corruption. Like the seller from the market steals from you, and gives you less amount of vegetables than you're paying for. It was used back then as a death sentence formula.

My personal hypothesis is, which is not the Truth of God. However, by some random accident of Mother Nature, might have the outside chance of becoming into harmony with God's personal order of it is, " That the sins of man have increased so greatly against God and His People which were in bondage under them that, there is not one single thing in the world that can be done by their machinations which will justify nor "redeem" ; ) nor save their body, spirit and souls from the oncoming wrath and judgement of the Almighty God. From the lowest in their synagogues, (not the victims) to their highest of high places with which the inflict their machinations and their pretenses and machinations under the true name of "Higher Learning, wisdom and, understanding."
For the children of the world had the opportunity to be the taskmasters above the children of The Light in their generation by their wisdom. However, because of their cruelty into their endeavors on the children of The Light, the children cried and, The Father of the True Light, which, exists pre-eminently over all space and time has heard their cries by reason of their taskmasters.

"But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence." - 1 Timothy 2:12 KJV
What's the point of teaching from a Book you refuse to obey? You're PROVING YOU DON'T BELIEVE IT.
