  • Whelks, Sea Snails, Limpets & Mussels. I'm coastal foraging on the Oregon Coast for some wild sea food. I have eaten mussels before but i have never tried Whelks or Limpets. I caught the end of a low tide and was able to find plenty of Whelks, but the Limpets were a bit harder to find, especially some that were big enough to harvest.
When it comes to how to cook limpets, it's actually simple. A quick drop in some boiling water and they will pop right off their shells. I will show you how you clean and prepare limpets in the video. i wasn't sure how to cook whelks snails so i had to do a little looking around online. These snails have to be one of the tastiest things i've foraged for so far, along with gooseneck barnacles. I picked up a couple mussels along the way and have to say, i definitely enjoyed these catch and cook mussels. I gave them a quick steam, cleaned and rinsed them. The texture was on point and the taste was probably the best i've had so far when it comest to foraging and eating mussels. I've seen oregon coast sea snails quite a bit considering how often i am out and fishing along the coast, but sea snail cooking and sea snail eating is not something i really considered. But these catch and cook snails were a treat! and i will definitely be eating sea snails again.
    ENJOY THE VIDEO?!

Great vid Nick! My kids and I have decided on 1st trip to Barview this year were going to harvest the barnacle's and now we will add the sea snails and limpits!

    • @xyzct

Aaron, if it's your first trip, please be careful, especially with kids. The rocks are EXTREMELY slippery, and falling can truly be catastrophic. Also, whatever size the swell that day, some random waves can be MUCH bigger, and getting swept off the rocks would also be a nightmare. But that said, the jetty ... um ... rocks!

The limpets take literally 30 seconds to cook. Over cooked limpets are rubbery and not too good to eat. Cooked right, it taste and texture is like squid. The snails are real good. I eat everything but the back half. Dipped it in a little flavored fish sauce with ginger and they’re gold.

The limpets, try tenderizing the with a steak hammer (not to much) , welkes with white pepper and vinegar, mussels steamed in white wine and garlic, with a butter garnish, your mussels are a lot bigger than the UK ones, but the limpets are a lot smaller

If fishing was bad we would go get get limpet and muscles and snails and hermit crabs and cook them all together into some melted butter with some garlic .Oh yea so good! When I couldn’t find any good forgeable stuff we’d just poke pull for eels and almost always get those. It’s crazy how much food you can find with a little effort along the rocks like that.

@@AnglingAddictsPNW yea bro it’s super fun, if you go down and start by the corner by the jetty store on the rocks and you could use an old broom handle or something and hammer a nail through a swivel on the end of the pole and then just use like a #2 hook with some squid on it. Don’t need more than a few inches of leader off the end. Poke in all the holes along the waterline all the way out until the tidal pool area. I haven’t had as much luck for them out on the jetty. 👍🤘

It’s so hard to find limpits big enough to eat on the oregon coast. But I think based off your reaction I probably won’t try those now. Apparently they are good raw as well, so I MAY have to try it that way. I was surprised that the snails were so tasty. I definitely enjoy small mussels for that same reason, plus less work in prep, but I will eat any of them lol. @@AnglingAddictsPNW It really is fun getting out there and harvesting your own food from the earth, and it’s free food. I have watched other youtubers eat those and even clams raw but I have always been too scared to do it because I don’t want to get sick. I like eating sushi but I guess I just don’t have the confidence to take something out of the ocean and eat it raw. I need to be with somebody showing/encouraging me to do it. I also own a small business that I do part-time plus work at another job full-time plus I have my kids with me 2-3 days every week so I completely understand being busy. I really appreciate the hard work you are putting into your videos especially with the catch-n-cooks you have been putting out lately, which are my favorite.
