Sgt Barry Sadler Ballad of the Green Berets Lyrics
Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say
The brave men of the Green Beret
Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret
Trained to live off nature's land
Trained in combat hand to hand
Men who fight by night and day
Courage take from the Green Beret
Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret
Back at home a young wife waits
Her Green Beret has met his fate
He has died for those oppressed
Leaving her his last request
Put silver wings on my son's chest
Make him one of America's best
He'll be a man they'll test one day
Have him win the Green Beret

I was 17 in ‘66 when this song came out. My dad passed that year and was a WW2 Marine Veteran from 38-46, who served in the South Pacific. I followed him in ‘68, when I joined the Marines and served in Vietnam 68-69. He never got to see me join but I’m sure he would have been proud.
Looking at you & your dad's years of service I am a bit baffled.
Your dad served from before WWII broke out to after WWII ended.
You later joined the fight at the very height of the Vietnam war.
I think I speak for many of us when I say, *thank you*.
Semper Fi Marine
I’m sure he is🫡🇺🇸
Thank you for your service (and your dad's)
There is only one thing I can say to you and your dad. Much love Brothers. Semper Fi. 71-79. OohRah!
I am sure he was watching you from heaven and cried tears of joy and pride!!
My husband served 21 years. He was also the leader of the HONOR GUARD for Oklahoma. I miss him desperately. He passed the 29 of November 2021.
Much respect and prayers to you 🙏
My father is still to this day, at 84 years old, a Green Beret!!!
Love him to my core!!
Update: Sadly my dad passed away on 10/24/21.
Oh how I miss him.😥
Thank you so much

This is my husband 50 years ago 😊
My Father was a Major Green Beret.
He Retired and then passed away at the young age of 52 from Agent Orange.
I know every word to every song on this Album.
Singing them to this day with tears in my eyes. My favorite album.
When my Mother passed away my sister wrote this on her obituary:
God tapped Major James L. Drinkwater on the shoulder and told him to put on his Military Dress Blues...
He had one last mission...
To escort his beautiful bride, your Momma home to be with the Lord.
Her trials are now over.
She is now at peace in the loving arms of her husband (who waited 24 years and 8 days for her).
There is Peace in the valley for Momma now.
My father was a Major Green Beret but my Mother had an army of her own. We were a family of 11.
Love and miss you from the depths of soul. Take care of my son. I have cried everyday for 2 years! Momma Loves You Soooo Much!
My sympathy and prayers. My dad was a WWII Army Veteran, served in Hawaii. First late husband was WWII Army Veteran, landed at Normandy, was wounded at Ste Lo, France. Second late husband was a Marine, served in Vietnam, served two two tours and was wounded twice. He died of Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma caused by Agent Orange.
What you wrote came from the heart, this truly is one of the most beautiful things I've ever read. I am so glad I found this comment. God bless you, and God bless America.🇺🇲

I was in the 6th grade when this song was released in January 1966. 50 years ago next month I married my Vietnam Vet. He was not a Green Beret, but he was my hero. He was in Vietnam, US Army, the year of 1971 and released from the army in early 1972, when I was still a senior in high school! One year later we met. He was 23 and I was 18 and attending my freshman year of college. We were married 3 months and 4 days later. Others said I was too young and we married too quickly but, we never once felt that way. Especially 46 years later when unfortunately, after healthy life, no PTSD, no health issues, he passed away from a non smoking lung cancer. His oncologist and VA believed it to be from having been exposed to Agent Orange 48 years earlier. He was diagnosed in 2018 and died October 2019.

Listened to this when I was a kid. Still gives me goose bumps!
Certainly no one can sing this song but Sgt Barry Sadler. Perfect voice and real soldier look
Salute you of a combat marine and also army reserve us God-bless you all
A true patriot and man of great integrity and who had pride in his country in better and more innocent times!
the times only seem to be more innocent....life is quite the same, in all generations...
@@philipbuckley759 There are constants as you suggest and there are particularities which only apply to specific times and it is this which I allude to and in that context we have lost much pride and dignity and swhich was indicative of more innocent time.
@@alecsuchi6620 You are so right!!! I remember when we were taught to respect our flag and honor our country, in school! Of course, back then, we PRAYED, in public schools, too!!! From that, we learned, to respect ourselves and those around us!!!! GOD BLESS!!!
@Jason Baird I presume you are sufficiently discerning to be able to distinguish between the degenerate leftist-liberal agenda and our traditional values to establish an informed and coherent position, Professor Baird?
@Jason Baird there are two fundamental positions:- the liberal left internationalism which advocates open borders and the ultimate destruction of the nation state or the patriotic nationalist position concerned with protecting the nation state and the ethnic cultural identity of its people. The latter position is unequivocally opposed to mass immigration from the developing world.
As little boy, sang this song for grandpa. He was a WW1 veteran. Family 100 years military service. No one liked the veterans back then, still I joined the military. They told me when I went home don't wear your uniform. Beyond my comprehension. So sad, but still proud. Much Love, Sgt. Ward
Douglas Ward, WELL SAID SIR AND RIGHTLY STAND PROUD!!!! THANK YOU AND YOUR FAMILY FOR YOUR SERVICE. KAG PATRIOTS 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Hey how are you doing today…?
Every time I hear this song I think about the soldiers who didn't make it home.
Good, then stay home and solve your own problems before you start more stupid, unwinnable wars.

I’m a former Australian Special ops combat engineer soldier (SOER) having served in Afghanistan and in Iraq. I have never worked alongside Green Beret units, but i do know a lot about their history, and i have immense respect for their skill sets. Great problem solvers and high performance individuals and so on. A great song sung by a true hero. @armyveteran13
