Yeah, that was pretty disappointing to hear from them.
If anyone wishes to assure themselves of the truth of the moon landings, they should go and watch the original NASA video footage. While watching, keep in mind the commonly accepted physical characteristics of the moon, i.e. 1/6 the surface gravity of earth, no atmosphere to speak of, and a diameter of 2000 miles. Then, trust your own opinion of the veracity of that video footage.
Anyone who isn't willing to even go and watch the original video footage, probably shouldn't be expressing an opinion about it, either way.
@@DavidSmith-pg1ob Exactly. It's a major pet peeve of mine when people have really strong opinions about things they know almost nothing about. These people's egos must be completely out of control to believe that their knowing just a little bit about something gives them an equal or greater platform to base a belief on as those of experts.
(See nearly everyone that denies climate change as an example of this. "I haven't personally noticed a difference in the weather, so therefore all the scientists in the world must be wrong!")

It depends where you are. E.g on the Moon the 'nauts ( and cameras) couldn't see the stars because the Sun is so bright hiding them away. Yet on the flights they used stars for navigation both on manned missions and on automatic landers. You can find an article here

So basically if you are actually in space you can clearly see the stars, if you are taking a picture in space stars are not captured because of the quick exposure and how much brighter the moon/earth are.

On the bright side of the moon it's daytime. Can you see the stars in the day on Earth? I've seen the moon in the day from earth at the right time of year but never seen a star they just arn't bright enough compared to the light reflected from the only star we can see in the day, Sol, the sun.

My favorite.But I think It requires some experience with the 70's Bowie,since It is a homage to this era and its ending with the 80's.But still a great pick.
Wanderson Oliveira oh, I agree. I’m just worried if they don’t do it now it will never get picked because of all of his other, bigger tracks. I love his hits, but some of the lesser-appreciated stuff is amazing. ‘How Does the Grass Grow?’ Is a top 10 track of his, for example.

The song was covered by an actual astronaut Chris Hadfield in the international space station. Please react to that cover (filmed in space). First music video ever filmed in space. While interestingly enough, Pink Floyd’s Delicate Sound of Thunder (live album) is the first ever album played in space by the Russians on a cassette tape in it’s entirety. Space oddity was also picked by Elon Musk when he sent his Tesla to the space last year. The car had an astronaut mannequin (representing major Tom) and the song was playing from the car stereo on a loop for two days straight in the space until the battery of the car died. As you reading this, that car is floating in space right now with Major Tom in it. A great tribute to the greatest space song of all time.

Bowie started in 1964 and Floyd in 1965. I am sure Bowie and Pink Floyd influenced each other but mostly Bowie was his own entity/unique and was an influencer more than he was copying anything others were doing.
There were also other psychedelic/space rock bands operating in the general timeframe. V&S need to check out some early floyd and some late bowie for more perspective.
Nuelzyr Bowie likely was inspired by early Pink Floyd, who made Piper at the Gates of Dawn two years before Space Oddity. He even covered See Emily Play, so he may have taken influence from songs like Astronomy Domine, Intersteller Overdrive, and A Saucerful Of Secrets.

Tangent: the Christian university my brothers and sisters-in-law went to told them they could always tell which entering students went to a non-Catholic Christian high school from their knowledge base. They tended to know very little about English, math, and science, but were very knowledgeable about the Bible. As you can imagine, students raised without a foundation of the basics struggle in university.

I love Bowie. The great thing about him is that you can listen to every one of his songs and get a different experience each time. He went through so many genres and re-created his persona and sound constantly on almost every album. "Low" or "Ziggy Stardust" would be a great candidates for a live-listening session.

Jesus didn't exist and no Gods has been detected but we can see the moon so it don't start well with your rant about science.
We know, the moon, is really a giant, 100-million-year-old egg that gives life to a winged creature that breaks free of the shell and flies off, laying another egg that becomes a replacement moon for Earth.
The reason no stars show up in any of the photos on the moon is because they had to use strong filters on the cameras to get a good photo. The moon has no atmosphere to filter the rays of the sun, and the sun's rays are so bright on the moon that if they took a regular photo it would be totally washed out from the brightness. Also, in space, the stars appear smaller, because the Earth's atmosphere diffuses the light from the stars, making them appear a bit larger to us, here on Earth. So, the combination of the two effects, with the stars appearing smaller out in space and the use of filters, made the stars disappear in the photos. Now you know.

I love that you're trying new songs on this channel. One of the things I enjoy the most about your videos though is when you break down the lyrics of complex and cryptic music. I hope you can delve more into atmospheric, post-metal style of music because of this.
I would imagine the stars would in fact look quite different. What we observe from earth is filtered and polarized by several miles of atmospheric distortion. Since space and the moon haven't got atmosphere, they would likely look very different. Possibly not showing up as much in camera photos because of the exposure value is set to photograph a luminous object like earth or moon or whatever rather that what would be a very fine point of light.

It's about alienation and not fitting in but told in a Space misadventure. The earth is Blue could be a reference to the Earth is sad, if you're feeling blue you're feeling sad! The keeping still is the acceptance of your situation! There are too many questions to the song to answer them all here.

Stars are clearly visible in space. Actually, we can see them better from space than through our thick atmosphere. That’s why we keep sending telescopes there.
The reason they are not visible in photos has a lot more to do with photography than with astronomy.

On top of the unusual light conditions in space, there’s another factor, which requires rapid reaction times from the camera. The ISS moves at 8 kilometers per second (17,150 mph) which is great for staying in orbit but less so for not-shaky images.
The problem is not just an exclusive issue in space, either. Try and take a photo of the night sky on your mobile phone. How many stars do you see? And what happens if you try to take a picture of something in the foreground, do you still see the stars behind?
There’s a reason why astrophotographers use highly expensive equipment that is optimized for the specific task and plan carefully around the hour, weather conditions, and exposure time.

(Teflon) When Bowie wrote this, Neil Armstrong had famously described riding the Saturn 5 rocket as 'sitting on top of 10,00 little bidders,' which it was. The Saturn 5 rocket was the most complex machine humanity had ever built. NASA gave up trying to recreate the engines. NASA has all the designs and blueprints, but not the notes on how to put them together. They lost the information on how sub-assemblies were fitted together, what welding techniques worked, and how to fine-tune each engine, as each was unique. NASA has designed (but never built) a replacement engine because they really don't want it. Newer space treaties stipulate everything must burn up on reentry. Also, they would rather send up many smaller payloads because the risks and costs are less.

In the photographs of the moon you can see the International Station with a background sky without stars. This effect is the maximum intensity of sunlight reflected on Earth, so the camera can't capture them, but if you are there you can see them.

Yes you see stars in outer space but if you take a picture on the moon the moon it self reflects light. So you would either get a white out of the moon to pic up the fainter light of the stars or have the proper lighting of the moon and the faint light of the stars doesn't appear in the picture. It's the same if your photograph the earth. You can see this if you go out on a sunny day and take a photo of your house. Any faint light that is in the rooms doesn't appear through the windows in photographs. Also if you take a photo while in a room during a sunny day any light in the windows across the room just whites out the window and no details of objects outside can be seen.

Also- pictures on the moon typically don’t show stars in the background due to the brightness of the suns reflection off the surface of the moon and the length of exposure time on the cameras they use..

The song "Heroes" off the album Heroes, (2nd album in the "Berlin Trilogy",) is my all-time favorite David Bowie song and I highly recommend checking it out.
Though I am not sure what exactly was used on the song, saxophones are all over some of rock's greatest songs. Check out the late Clarence Clemons from Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, "Jungleland," "Born To Run" & "Prove It All Night." Thing about this song is it was written the same year as the moon landing and back then the space capsule had almost no controls in it to keep the weight down. Everything was controled remotely from ground control. So if you lost contact with them you're done.

Bowie was such a productive, creative and adaptive artist, you should listen to 'Quicksand' from the 'Hunky dory', it is about his experience with Thelema, also the title track from 'Station to Station', about travelling through the Tree of Life, both are excellent from a musical perspective too.
BTW, stars are visible from space (the Hubble telescope would be pointless otherwise), as their light doesn't pass through our atmosphere they do not twinkle, but would be far more clear and bright. But considering Bowie's esoteric background, I expect it bears reference to the change in mystical perspective going from Malkuth to Kether (again, mirrored in the lyrics to 'Station to Station').
'Who's shirts' is definitely about media banality, but possibly also a bit of a dig at identity branding and endorsement culture, like the lines from Rolling Stones' 'Satisfaction'..

I have always understood this to mean from earth, the stars are above your head and the ground, where as in space they are all around you full circle including both above your head and under your feet at the same time. I do believe the explanation is quite literal.

This song was released the same year that humankind first landed on the moon. The previous year, "2001: A Space Odyssey" was released. And although a handful of humans had already orbited the Earth, it was still imagined that the isolation of being alone in space would drive any person insane fairly quickly.
I always took this song literally. It came out at a time when science fiction and space travel were still very popular. So I always thought it was just a disastrous space mission and the guy has accepted his fate as he is floating away...
*guys* some much needed context. This was Bowie's breakout hit in part because of The Apollo missions where this song got attached to by the media. Also given the knowledge level of the time, and we had *just* landed on the moon, everything seemed possible! It was perceived as realistic and within our grasp to send humans traveling thru space
