This song is from the album "Love Yourself: Tear", which is part of the Love Yourself Trilogy (Her, Tear, and Answer) that has an overarching narrative. LY: Her is about the wonder of falling in love. LY: Tear is about when love goes wrong. In this song, Fake Love, the singer tries to make the other person happy but loses himself in the process. So it's fake love not because the other person doesn't reciprocate, but if you're not yourself, is it really love? LY: Answer is the realization that true love can only come when you first love yourself.
Many people consider "LY: Tear" one of their best albums and there are certainly many standout tracks. "Singularity", a neo-soul song by V. "Truth Untold", a heartbreaking song by the vocal line. "Outro: Tear", an emotional song by the rap line. And many other great songs.

The meaning of the song isn’t quite as you described it - the love is reciprocated, but not towards their true self, it’s rather towards this superficial image or a “mask” they put on for the person they love.
“For you, I could pretend like I was strong when I was hurt”
“Trying to erase myself and make me your doll”
“I changed everything, just for you
Now I don't know me, Who are you?”
They are talking about how they are doing everything for the person they love by pretending they’re something else, and in that process they forget who they truly are. In one other song from this album there’s a line “Have I lost myself or have I gained you” and that’s the true question they are looking an answer for throughout this whole album. The love is falling apart because you can not love anyone else unless you love yourself first. I also think that the line “I grew a flower that can’t be bloomed in a dream that can’t come true” is one of the best lyrics BTS have ever written, it’s the perfect metaphor for someone who’s trying to form a relationship based on something that’s not inherently sincere. Also, the choreography for this song is my favorite BTS choreography ever and I’m so glad you noticed it! 5:21 here you can see save me written on the wall and if you read it upside down it become I'm fine and bts have both song call save me and I'm fine 😊 Both of the song also relate to each other, like the beat lyrics and dance, it's interesting. I recommend you to watch both of the songs (live performance) and you will found out the difference and similarity
and especially pay attention to RM's verse as Save Me verse is in reverse in I'm fine!
In the initial hearing I came to the same understanding as you about the song. But as I listen to it more and with some help, the message is actually a lot deeper imo. It's actually saying if you have to change yourself completely to get loved by others, the love you get is fake, because they are loving the person you pretend to be and in the end the mask always drops off sooner or later.

Their songs can be interpreted in numerous ways and they always encourage fans and listeners to draw our own conclusions beyond their original intention behind a piece. For Fake Love, seeing how it’s part of Tear, it talks about how the person in the relationship is beginning to realise how they’ve changed themselves to fit what (they believe) their partner wants, effectively erasing themselves and putting up a façade just to keep the relationship alive. They realise how a love based on lies is fake and how both of them created something that doesn’t actually exists. In the end it ties in with the series in that not loving oneself leads people to be willing to change themselves at their core if it means people will love them, because they believe themselves to be unlovable as they are or believe they have to be a certain way to be loved.

You might want to try the Fake love Rocking Vibe version for a more of a rock feel. The electric guitars are super satisfying... There's also 'I need you' which has a more melacholic feel.
I really can't encourage you enough to do some live performances! Their performances at the MMA's and MAMA's are absolutely fantastic productions, and they are at their best as performers.
You can watch some live concerts. Wembley, Las Vegas, Busan is the most current. You would love the first two songs of that concert, and later in the show, the rap section is exceptional, they do Ugh and Cyoher pt 3. Live is just so so great! Try it.

I love your reaction, the versatility and diversity of Bangtan’s music is something I really like. It make me wanting to explore other genre/different artist as well. Also their MV is akin to a short film, such a high quality video with amazing visual, subtle hints, deep message/symbols, insane choreography etc.
This mvideo has so many BU (fictional stroryline that crosses many albuns) references....
Fun fact: if you put the words "save me" in the mirror upside-down it becomes "I'm fine" and these are the names of two BTS songs. 😀💜

Okay Fake Love is about all relationships that can go bad in this way: romantic, familial, work etc. Where you can wear this persona that isn't you and lose yourself in it. It's about realizing that this relationship isn't real and it won't work because it's not based on the real you. It's based on this persona that is a lie. Jungkook picking up the sand and it turns into phantom petals is a representation of the line in the song "I grew a flower that can't bloom in a dream that won't come true" Some of the other aspects like the snickers bars and the toys in the room with J-Hope and fire in the room with Suga are all points that goes back to the BU or Bangtan Universe. BTS has a fictional story line that connects a lot of their videos together and Fake Love has some aspects of that in it.
In the intro of BTS '"Fake Love", Jungkook sings: "Love you so bad, love you so bad / Mold a pretty lie for you ... I grew a flower that can't be bloomed in a dream that can't come true ".
These sad lyrics were not just flowery words strung together, as the band intended to tell a story of heartbreak that extended from their previous work.
In the first verse, BTS sings: "I changed everything, just for you / But I don't know me, Who are you?".
The theme of disconnected lovers continues throughout the song. RM brought this up when speaking to Billboard around the time of the song's release. "We're trying to say that if you, in love, when you're not true to yourself, the love won't last", he told.
"Because love is complex and we always have the dark sides and the sad sides."
This song sings the agony of some sort.
