I've played guitar for 54 years and was into hard rock Purple Zeppelin etc but I have to say this solo and song are right up there with the very best in rock music history, Don deserves all the plaudits going.
+Joel Barry Well, I said making a living because we think many of these artists like you say, had it made already but its not really true. At least to keep up with their lifestyle, once you leave a band you have to keep working somehow. Cant keep your millions of dollars home(s) just by royalties of some of the songs you collaborated in. Henley and Frey were pretty much the ones who made tons of money. I mean, compare to the rest of them.
I love how Tommy Shaw sang the last part and also put his take on the solo! He did a great job and helped make the song sound fresh! They obviously work well together!
Don Felder is the Genius behind Hotel California. IMHO, the song that changed the landscape. And Tommy Shaw took Styx to the next level and continues to impress and inspire.
What a suprise to see Steve DiStanislao playing the drums! For those who don´t know him..... he´s been playing with Pink Floyd´s David Gilmour for the last 15 years. Amazing performance Don! loved it!
It was divinely appointed that they all came together at that time & their collective & combined geniuses brought to “live” Hotel California … we are just grateful to be in this generation to enjoy and appreciate their talents… 🤩

You really think these guys singing sound better than Don Henley? A matter of taste and all that but if you really believe that, I can’t help but think there must be some underlying hatred of Henley colouring your opinion because Henley blows these two away. Felder is an unbelievable guitarist but in terms of Eagles quality control, nothing more than a backing singer. I can’t blame the guy for heading out and performing this song with friends and I was actually pleasantly surprised at the vocals. But better than Henley? Don’t be daft. That’s be up there with saying Brian May doing a solo show and singing Bohemian Rhapsody was better than Freddy!

Don, I saw you a few times in the band, just loved it, but I’d travel many miles gladly to see you in a venue like this. Brother, sign up for one more tour, your nemesis has passed & I’d love to see you cutting heads with Joe on this song again. Sad to hear of Randy, RIP, but let’s use him as a lesson here-time is fleeting so for the love of the band, the fans, Timothy & the amazing music let’s please take it to the limit just one more time. I’d live for that. I just pray I can manage to get a ticket-but we just don’t know when that last time rolls around. It would make my life if it does. +Carl Rudd I can agree Carl that Felder is a top notch musician but a class act should have a bit of humility. Without the 2 original Eagles Felder would never have reached the same level of fame and fortune. DF is said to be worth 60 mil. During his hey day he was cheered all over the world not b/c he was a fine guitarist but b/c he was an Eagle. For decades people worldwide flooded the Eagles tours not to see Felder play but to see Glen and Don sing those heavenly songs and to be entertained by Joe Walsh, TBS, and R.Meisner. I know that's why I went to see them and was satisfied to pay hundreds a ticket. The Eagles were great with Felder and still great without his greedy ass. RIP Mr.Frey please RIP!!! and God bless your family.
I disagree. He was cheered all over because he WAS a fabulous guitarist. And also, let us postulate that WITHOUT Felder, the whole Hotel California thing would not have happened for 'the Eagles'...so, you see, it works both ways.
+Carl Rudd True Carl, Felder was/is a fab guitarist. BUT, there are many great players who were never discovered. Felder being on the same stage with 2 prolific masters of pop/rock songs for decades was a great break and made him a millionaire.
Yes, many great guitar players... but... not with the right combination of attributes to succeed. Any number of character flaws can sink a budding career fast.
+Carl Rudd I agree with you. Don't feed the anti-Felder trolls as all they want to do is build up Frey/Henley by tearing down others in the group. It also happens with Meisner and Leadon because despite being great musicians, Frey/Henley were not very good bandmates. When you have two of the original four founders of the Eagles up and quit, and another owner get fired for asking questions as the CFO, you know something is wrong.`The Eagles were a very good and talented country band that had some R&R in them. However it wasnt until they brought Felder in as a full partner in the 3rd album that they really started to rock. Then they took it to an even greater level by adding Walsh, though he was only a paid employee.Had those additions never happened, the Eagles would not have reached the stardom and pinnacle they did.Sadly, egos, greed, drugs, etc. tore them apart back when they could have continued to create great music together.Still it was a wonderful time, and music fans should be thankful for all the great music they created together.
The guitar solo written and played by Don Felder (and also played by Joe Walsh) were what propelled Hotel California from a good rock song to a truly great rock song of all time.
+Joel Barry Sideman is not an accurate way to describe Felder's role in the band. He provided the Eagles with needed edge when the band wanted to move in that direction, hastening the departure of Leadon. And when Felder wrote the music to HC -their signature song, and Victim, he felt entitled to an equal share as was agreed in the beginning.
+scott harrison Look Scott, certainly Felder was a guitar master and for his skills was paid a fortune of dough. But in my opinion he was not entitled to a larger share than Joe Walsh and TB Schmit who were both quite delighted to accept smaller cuts. The Eagles went on and on as they did as long as Don and Glen were onstage, all the others were replaceable parts. And as it turned out Felder was the least essential part as evidenced by the full houses at Eagles concerts even after he was canned. For his contributions to those 2 songs you named Felder was paid his royalties. But those 2 song contributions didn't warrant him being equal to 2 of the most successful songwriters/singers in pop/rock history. Henley and Frey. Don Felder was a glorified sideman who wrote a bit of music now and then and couldn't sing his way out of a paper bag. He's one of the richest musicians ever, thanks to Henley and Frey.
+Joel Barry I think the reason that Felder wanted more money was because before Schmit and Walsh joined the band, Frey, Henley and Felder formed a corporation to get more money than what they were getting from their record label, concerts, promotions, etc. When they reunited, Felder thought they were violating the agreement. When he was kicked out of The Eagles, he sued Henley and Frey and eventually they settled out of court.

Very true but Walsh plays it better. Frey and Henley were 100% correct in omitting his singing from the recording. His vocals are mediocre.

DON FELDER is a class act. Knows what he's doing and is a top notch musician. The Eagles were good without him, and BETTER with him.
+Carl Rudd I can agree Carl that Felder is a top notch musician but a class act should have a bit of humility. Without the 2 original Eagles Felder would never have reached the same level of fame and fortune. DF is said to be worth 60 mil. During his hey day he was cheered all over the world not b/c he was a fine guitarist but b/c he was an Eagle. For decades people worldwide flooded the Eagles tours not to see Felder play but to see Glen and Don sing those heavenly songs and to be entertained by Joe Walsh, TBS, and R.Meisner. I know that's why I went to see them and was satisfied to pay hundreds a ticket. The Eagles were great with Felder and still great without his greedy ass. RIP Mr.Frey please RIP!!! and God bless your family.
I disagree. He was cheered all over because he WAS a fabulous guitarist. And also, let us postulate that WITHOUT Felder, the whole Hotel California thing would not have happened for 'the Eagles'...so, you see, it works both ways.
+Carl Rudd True Carl, Felder was/is a fab guitarist. BUT, there are many great players who were never discovered. Felder being on the same stage with 2 prolific masters of pop/rock songs for decades was a great break and made him a millionaire.
Yes, many great guitar players... but... not with the right combination of attributes to succeed. Any number of character flaws can sink a budding career fast.
+Carl Rudd I agree with you. Don't feed the anti-Felder trolls as all they want to do is build up Frey/Henley by tearing down others in the group. It also happens with Meisner and Leadon because despite being great musicians, Frey/Henley were not very good bandmates. When you have two of the original four founders of the Eagles up and quit, and another owner get fired for asking questions as the CFO, you know something is wrong.`The Eagles were a very good and talented country band that had some R&R in them. However it wasnt until they brought Felder in as a full partner in the 3rd album that they really started to rock. Then they took it to an even greater level by adding Walsh, though he was only a paid employee.Had those additions never happened, the Eagles would not have reached the stardom and pinnacle they did.Sadly, egos, greed, drugs, etc. tore them apart back when they could have continued to create great music together.Still it was a wonderful time, and music fans should be thankful for all the great music they created together.

The guitar solo written and played by Don Felder (and also played by Joe Walsh) were what propelled Hotel California from a good rock song to a truly great rock song of all time.
Don seems like a really cool guy and deserves a bit more credit for the Eagles success of the early years. RIP Glenn

+Joel Barry Sideman is not an accurate way to describe Felder's role in the band. He provided the Eagles with needed edge when the band wanted to move in that direction, hastening the departure of Leadon. And when Felder wrote the music to HC -their signature song, and Victim, he felt entitled to an equal share as was agreed in the beginning.
+scott harrison Look Scott, certainly Felder was a guitar master and for his skills was paid a fortune of dough. But in my opinion he was not entitled to a larger share than Joe Walsh and TB Schmit who were both quite delighted to accept smaller cuts. The Eagles went on and on as they did as long as Don and Glen were onstage, all the others were replaceable parts. And as it turned out Felder was the least essential part as evidenced by the full houses at Eagles concerts even after he was canned. For his contributions to those 2 songs you named Felder was paid his royalties. But those 2 song contributions didn't warrant him being equal to 2 of the most successful songwriters/singers in pop/rock history. Henley and Frey. Don Felder was a glorified sideman who wrote a bit of music now and then and couldn't sing his way out of a paper bag. He's one of the richest musicians ever, thanks to Henley and Frey.
+Joel Barry I think the reason that Felder wanted more money was because before Schmit and Walsh joined the band, Frey, Henley and Felder formed a corporation to get more money than what they were getting from their record label, concerts, promotions, etc. When they reunited, Felder thought they were violating the agreement. When he was kicked out of The Eagles, he sued Henley and Frey and eventually they settled out of court.
It's the defining of a classic, never get old, never bored. Perfect.
