Nelson movies were inherently always commercial as he openly admitted in an interview with you that he is here to make money. So, this script with Vijay was always bound to get even more mainstream. What's disappointing was how generic and scopeless it was.

They don't mind a film's creativity being compromised, their goal is to make a profit at the end of the day. Therefore, "writer-directors" in Tamil cinema have resorted to this mindset of seeing their movies as a collection of "paisa-vasool" moments depending on the big hero image, rather than a coherent story and screenplay.

It’s a shame that a film like this will probably do well in the box office and directors/producers will come to the conclusion that whatever product we put out people will turn up as long as it’s a Vijay/ajith film. It is so frustrating to hear that such a highly anticipated film falls flat due to genericness. It is the last thing I expected a Nelson film (or the new rebooted Vijay film) to be.
The trailer itself was quite underwhelming. So many of these movies start with an interesting premise, but the treatment and implementation is always so generic. I don't understand why the writers and directors don't take more risks with their writing and filmmaking. They should take a page of out Shankar's films and see how he tries to bring something new and different to the table whenever he can

I feel like Beast was a small scale movie originally with just a simple robbery occurring in the mall rather than a large terrorist group And it was scaled up for Vijay But when you scale it up, you lose all the small things as you have to focus on creating a coherent plot with such a large scale threat

Whenever Vijay acts in a film with an animal/bird/marine life related title it turns out to be a disappointment - Sura, Kuruvi, Puli and now Beast. Beast has to be the most disappointing movie of Vijay since Puli .
I haven't had an impact from a movie like this. It was my first movie at a theater after the pandemic, in a while. Just wanted to recalibrate the reviewers to my taste. The impact was so deep that we kept talking all about it the next day and just couldn't get over it. It hurt so bad and felt cheated that I would be afraid to pick a movie and get back to theaters again.
Its truly pleasing to the heart when mass hero fans are now regretting watching movies like these. If this was released 10 years back , they would have been okay with mediocrity but now due to the rise of ott content their tastes have changed drastically ! They are now craving quality films which have something called a plot as opposed to mass hero films which have no plot or logic and are just embarassing. The directors and the writers must now realize this change aka a new wave. They should come up with plots that touch the audience's hearts and souls which portray truths and emotions or even a great story that does not conform to the usual norm of the mass hero genre. It is truly great that tamil cinema which was stagnant for a while is now beginning to change because of movies like onnaiyum attukuttiyum, visaranai , super deluxe which are real cinema !
Nelson told before itself in the round table of Tamil directors that " namma solra Madhiri panradhuku hero othuka matanga " , that reaction of Vignesh shivn's " avasara pattutiye Kumaru " moment. Nelson definitely had some good script , may be he had to change for the hero's mass .

First of all the story was ar murugadass. Then after some remuneration issue,nelson took the movie and Guess what if arr had done this it would have been DEFINITELY worth watching. Nelson ruined it with his humour treatment. Accept it doctor was also a overrated movie.
Biggest culprit of this movie is Suntv . They simply wanted to make money. They don’t give enough time to modify and fact check the story or screen play . Another culprit is Vijay. He was discussing a movie with AR Murugadas and when he found that that that story is not going to go well then he immediately accepted Nelson as his next movie director without fact-checks the story or screen play . Vijay wanted Sun tv as his producer since Dmk in power so he has no other options than going with Nelson and sun tv . Nelson is going to do his next movie with Rajani .. Rajani has to make sure that this guy is having a good story. If not better to drop that project and do a movie with KS Ravi Kumar. I am totally disappointed with last 5 movies of Vijay .. Marsal ,theri , Sarkar, and master and this Beast . After thuppaaki and Kathi I don’t see a good fulfilling movie from Vijay.

It’s a Masala movie for Tamil New Year - at the end of the day - it’s a film industry - it’s a business - Vijay made money - Sun Pictures will make money - the people who worked in the movie made money. As a film critic or reviewer - don’t be emotional when reviewing a Masala movie - did Vijay or Nelson or Sun Pictures advertised that Beast will be a Best Picture contender at the Oscars? NO - they did not. Vijay will do another movie. Sun Pictures will do another movie. Nelson will do another movie. Who benefits? The people who work in the film industry who have to earn a living.

Vijay, Ajith... have to let go of stardom to retain it. Market has changed. Tamil is no more south's market king. Telugu and Kannada movies have entered TN in a big way and they may not let go of the hold anytime soon.
@hriday rasa KGF production team now has a decent hold on distribution network and theatre owners all over India, including TN. Do you think they wont use it for their upcoming pan India releases? The key people there are also helping out two other production houses, which have a couple more big releases. Dont know how many more are under wraps. They all may fail, but they will all get a sizeable screening space inside TN when they are released.

There are movies which are way better in Kannada which either didn't get audience outside or promoters were not ambitious enough. KGF has broken the myth and sure will you see many such movies in future. Kannada movie industry's glory will be back. Expect some good competition in south. Either way it's good for us audience, we get to see better made movies. Infact Malayalam movies too. They are really well made.

Hey guys, As a tamil movie buff from Andhra who got fedup with my industry churning out the same old fucked up masala entertainers , I have shifted to watching tamil cinema since 2013. What the fuck is wrong with the young directors who have given solid movies with their initial movies . For example 1) Pa . Ranjith- From :- Madras( What a movie man) To- Kabali, kaala( 😴😴😴😴😴😴) I felt even his recent boxing movie with Arya is meh. 2) Kathick subbaraj- From Jigarthanda- My all time favourite tamil movie To Jagamethadiram- 🤮 Mahaan was Okayish. 3) Vinoth From Theeran- Very good movie ( except for romantic scenes. To valimai- 🤐 4) Nelson- From Doctor- Crazy movie with some slow narration here and there. To Beast - 🙄🙄🙄( I slept off in the 2nd half) 5) lokesh From Kaithi - fucking adrenaline pumping movie To Master-( Snooze fest) - I was bored as fuck. Hoping for Vikram to be not just good, It has to be fucking great . Anything lower that masterpiece is not great for me. Tamil flim industry needs a reboot. But they are too closely alinged to local state politics. All other south industries have moved forward & evolved. Malayalam & Telegu flim directors shld start directing Tamil actors for a change.

Master had got its basics right. The execution went a little off in some places, but its production value, character arcs, superb villain & an effortless hero elevated the film a lot.
For me master is better than khaidhi ...khaidhi still an overrated film..I mean movie is good but all those wow very new.. super direction those r all over rated than what it was... For example..when that student got killed near the window or door..his love interest ..girl cries..like she don't know how to perform.... over acting is all that I can say..which was director's fault or inexperience to ok a perfect shot...all that hype given to biryani scene turns out to be normal..like after showing him in so massy elevation for eating..in next scene he behaves like a normal person...once the character was given a mass elevation or something that of sort then it can not go down..which shows screenplay of the characterisation is wrong

To be honest, his Kolamavu Kokila and Doctor were just as average or as bad as Beast, never understood why they got hyped so much! The 'comedy' in Doctor to a large extent was just as childish as in Beast...yes a few interesting punches here & there, no unnecessary deviation from the story, all that is great! Those films were unnecessarily overhyped just because they had lesser stars & Beast will get bashed more because its a Big Star movie, but i dont think Nelson has done something very different in Beast than in his earlier movies
Guys it is acceptable that commercial movies cannot be 100percent logical. Even RRR has more illogical scenes. But, scenes in RRR is taken in a convincing way and also entertaining compared to beast. If you accept this please 👍. Whenever Vijay's movie name related to animals, birds.etc..like puli, sura, kuruvi we need to think twice my friend. Beast is in that line up.

Nelson overrated director, Doctor movie was laggy and dragged. People hyped the movie way too much. Watch Blue Sattai Maran review on Doctor towards the end, he got it spot on.

The problem with big stars is that there are unwilling to take risks for a great script oweing to their market value.I cant imagine any top tamil actor doing a Trance or Thonidimuthalam driksakshiyum or Minnal Murali.Even if they opt for any remake it has to be done adding certain commercial elements to suit their image eg Nerkonda paarvai or Kavalan or chandramukhi.Also the packaging and presentation matters.Atm could have changed vijays choice of movies had the performances and story been great.According to me kathi is one such movie which had the right mix of peeformance plus mass elements
Actually Vijay too choose and acted a different genre movie "Puli" but unfortunately it became a massive flop. So vijay is afraid of choosing new genre stories and sticking in the same garbage masala stories.

But what I also realize is that, the increasing overfeeded heroic image for every film after film in their past, which itself had turned to be the devil in dark for all our top heroes to loss a film like this when they attempt something genre based scripts.... Example "PULI"... Instead of mentioning it is a fantasy based script made for kids and general audience, the movie was over hyped in Promo's like same as this BEAST, at the end, when a fan realizes its not a fan boy movie, then it results in mixed reviews and negative impact in the box office.... In PULI, the dialogues were so mere and childish for the mode of the film, however so fans couldn't get into the movie.... So, SETTING THE RIGHT EXPECTATION for the movie does real lot matter for the audience to conceive the film as it is made. Master worked very well across the globe because, the crew maintained the inner content of the movie and VIJAYs character and whats VJS role would be etc... So it was able to work out..... With BEAST, after the Intro & the RAW in field portions, NELSON had missed to hold the thrill of hijack, which was the main content of the film, the jokes in between, further spoils the hijack mode, and the terrorists isn't frightening the hostages or the govt??? So when there is a week villianism or antoganist the screenplay wouldn't stand. But this same concept - hijack comedy thriller had worked very well in a movie called" PAYANAM" directed by MR. RadhaMohan sir and produced by actor PrakashRaj.... As a fan I appreciate THALAPATHY for choosing scripts and crew with different scripts but I would request him to forget his package based delievry to the audience... Because if you see, most of his different tries all had fallen due to unfitted image based scenes into those movies, be it ATM, PULI... However technical aspects of the movie is really appreciable over and above the LOGIC... 🙂👍🏻

Heard that the initial story was written by ar murugadass and was to be sequel of thuppaki. Due to director's remuneration issue he let the project down and Nelson took on the story. If arr had done this he would have hit this out of the park. Nelson just ruined it by his excessive dark humour bullshit atlee and arr are the only directors who understand how to handle Vijay. Lokesh did a good job with master. But beast is a feast that is spoilt 10 years ago.

It is not handling Vijay. It is his take on Vijay which didn't hit the mark. That is not to say Nelson is a bad director. It is his style. Atlee may have done servicable scenes but it does fall short on its characters. It's the first time someone like Vijay has gone Gun Blazing. There is no Dark Humour Bullshit.
This may be sun pictures strategy to make Vijay act in a sub standard film and reduce his popularity so that his politics ambition doesn’t progress. You never know. Remember they did the same in Sura and vettaikkaran

As a Vijay fan I agree there is big draw back in film in phase of editing, story continuity (screenplay) and camera work... Also I have a doubt of just to highlight anirudh music editing dept gave space/lag/slow mo... Also really very angry on Jani master (asshole) after watching full arabic Kuthu - just to make step difficult he made the dance not even matching the beats, even when he dances with Vijay the steps are not matching song beats... As I work for Hollywood movies VFX (MPC Bangalore) I was able to see all the defects clearly, even in VFX... As a Tamil audience and Vijay fan and considering Nelson - movie is entertaining with fun... I laughed a lot of times in the whole movie... Cheers

Anything without a good screenplay is a waste of time and unbearable. Valimai was mediocre at best and i was hoping something great from Vijay after the Master which i liked because of sincerity in playing character. Hearing this review my wife who is a big Vijay fan and was waiting for the film will be disappointed. even more.

We have seen Mass Heroes films a lot in the past which had good content & script but now 🙄🙄 content is completely lacking with these generation heroes ...Earlier Rajni & vijaykanth ( police ) movies were commercial but content as good as Kamal Sir movies ..that's why they were successful & people also loved them & their movies ..these heroes have to change 👍..

The trailer itself was quite underwhelming. So many of these movies start with an interesting premise, but the treatment and implementation is always so generic. I don't understand why the writers and directors don't take more risks with their writing and filmmaking. I haven't had an impact from a movie like this. It was my first movie at a theater after the pandemic, in a while. Just wanted to recalibrate the reviewers to my taste. The impact was so deep that we kept talking all about it the next day and just couldn't get over it. It hurt so bad and felt cheated that I would be afraid to pick a movie and get back to theaters again.
Its truly pleasing to the heart when mass hero fans are now regretting watching movies like these. If this was released 10 years back , they would have been okay with mediocrity but now due to the rise of ott content their tastes have changed drastically ! They are now craving quality films which have something called a plot as opposed to mass hero films which have no plot or logic and are just embarassing. The directors and the writers must now realize this change aka a new wave. They should come up with plots that touch the audience's hearts and souls which portray truths and emotions or even a great story that does not conform to the usual norm of the mass hero genre. It is truly great that tamil cinema which was stagnant for a while is now beginning to change because of movies like onnaiyum attukuttiyum, visaranai , super deluxe which are real cinema !

Biggest culprit of this movie is Suntv . They simply wanted to make money. They don’t give enough time to modify and fact check the story or screen play . Another culprit is Vijay. He was discussing a movie with AR Murugadas and when he found that that that story is not going to go well then he immediately accepted Nelson as his next movie director without fact-checks the story or screen play . Vijay wanted Sun tv as his producer since Dmk in power so he has no other options than going with Nelson and sun tv . Nelson is going to do his next movie with Rajani .. Rajani has to make sure that this guy is having a good story. If not better to drop that project and do a movie with KS Ravi Kumar. I am totally disappointed with last 5 movies of Vijay .. Marsal ,theri , Sarkar, and master and this Beast . After thuppaaki and Kathi I don’t see a good fulfilling movie from Vijay.

It’s a Masala movie for Tamil New Year - at the end of the day - it’s a film industry - it’s a business - Vijay made money - Sun Pictures will make money - the people who worked in the movie made money. As a film critic or reviewer - don’t be emotional when reviewing a Masala movie - did Vijay or Nelson or Sun Pictures advertised that Beast will be a Best Picture contender at the Oscars? NO - they did not. Vijay will do another movie. Sun Pictures will do another movie. Nelson will do another movie. Who benefits? The people who work in the film industry who have to earn a living.
Problem is dark comedy's work only to certain extent..If it was overdosed the end result would be disaster.. U can't make fun of things which are needed to b potrayed seriously lyk hijack scenes and antogonist characterization... It demands high intensity n can't be made in lighter note...seems beast a big let down

@hriday rasa KGF production team now has a decent hold on distribution network and theatre owners all over India, including TN. Do you think they wont use it for their upcoming pan India releases? The key people there are also helping out two other production houses, which have a couple more big releases. Dont know how many more are under wraps. They all may fail, but they will all get a sizeable screening space inside TN when they are released.

What the fuck is wrong with the young directors who have given solid movies with their initial movies . For example

I felt even his recent boxing movie with Arya is meh.

From Jigarthanda- My all time favourite tamil movie

If Vikram and PS1 are anything less than Masterpieces, I think many people from different states will rethink of watching tamil movies.
PS: Vetrimaaran is great , delivering 1 movie every 2 to 3 years is a bit too much. And the director of Karnan is also good but In the same movie except for interval Bang and climax and couple of scenes here and there : I felt other scenes were mediocre.

Master had got its basics right. The execution went a little off in some places, but its production value, character arcs, superb villain & an effortless hero elevated the film a lot.
For me master is better than khaidhi ...khaidhi still an overrated film..I mean movie is good but all those wow very new.. super direction those r all over rated than what it was... For example..when that student got killed near the window or door..his love interest ..girl cries..like she don't know how to perform.... over acting is all that I can say..which was director's fault or inexperience to ok a perfect shot...all that hype given to biryani scene turns out to be normal..like after showing him in so massy elevation for eating..in next scene he behaves like a normal person...once the character was given a mass elevation or something that of sort then it can not go down..which shows screenplay of the characterisation is wrong

The 'comedy' in Doctor to a large extent was just as childish as in Beast...yes a few interesting punches here & there, no unnecessary deviation from the story, all that is great! Those films were unnecessarily overhyped just because they had lesser stars & Beast will get bashed more because its a Big Star movie, but i dont think Nelson has done something very different in Beast than in his earlier movies

Guys it is acceptable that commercial movies cannot be 100percent logical. Even RRR has more illogical scenes. But, scenes in RRR is taken in a convincing way and also entertaining compared to beast. If you accept this please 👍.

Ya, more time and investment should be made on a movie and less investment on an actor so that the quality of the movie increases!!! Out of 150 crores budget, Vijay took 100 crores for himself and left only 50 crores for the whole movie! Technicians and other crew members will work more happily and better if we pay them more!
Nelson overrated director, Doctor movie was laggy and dragged. People hyped the movie way too much. Watch Blue Sattai Maran review on Doctor towards the end, he got it spot on.

The problem with big stars is that there are unwilling to take risks for a great script oweing to their market value.I cant imagine any top tamil actor doing a Trance or Thonidimuthalam driksakshiyum or Minnal Murali.Even if they opt for any remake it has to be done adding certain commercial elements to suit their image eg Nerkonda paarvai or Kavalan or chandramukhi.Also the packaging and presentation matters.Atm could have changed vijays choice of movies had the performances and story been great.According to me kathi is one such movie which had the right mix of peeformance plus mass elements
Actually Vijay too choose and acted a different genre movie "Puli" but unfortunately it became a massive flop. So vijay is afraid of choosing new genre stories and sticking in the same garbage masala stories.

But what I also realize is that, the increasing overfeeded heroic image for every film after film in their past, which itself had turned to be the devil in dark for all our top heroes to loss a film like this when they attempt something genre based scripts.... Example "PULI"... Instead of mentioning it is a fantasy based script made for kids and general audience, the movie was over hyped in Promo's like same as this BEAST, at the end, when a fan realizes its not a fan boy movie, then it results in mixed reviews and negative impact in the box office.... In PULI, the dialogues were so mere and childish for the mode of the film, however so fans couldn't get into the
movie.... So, SETTING THE RIGHT EXPECTATION for the movie does real lot matter for the audience to conceive the film as it is made. Master worked very well across the globe because, the crew maintained the inner content of the movie and VIJAYs character and whats VJS role would be etc... So it was able to work out..... With BEAST, after the Intro & the RAW in field portions, NELSON had missed to hold the thrill of hijack, which was the main content of the film, the jokes in between, further spoils the hijack mode, and the terrorists isn't frightening the hostages or the govt??? So when there is a week villianism or antoganist the screenplay wouldn't stand. But this same concept - hijack comedy thriller had worked very well in a movie called" PAYANAM" directed by MR. RadhaMohan sir and produced by actor PrakashRaj.... As a fan I appreciate THALAPATHY for choosing scripts and crew with different scripts but I would request him to forget his package based delievry to the audience... Because if you see, most of his different tries all had fallen due to unfitted image based scenes into those movies, be it ATM, PULI... However technical aspects of the movie is really appreciable over and above the LOGIC... 🙂👍🏻

Heard that the initial story was written by ar murugadass and was to be sequel of thuppaki. Due to director's remuneration issue he let the project down and Nelson took on the story. If arr had done this he would have hit this out of the park. Nelson just ruined it by his excessive dark humour bullshit atlee and arr are the only directors who understand how to handle Vijay. Lokesh did a good job with master. But beast is a feast that is spoilt 10 years ago.

It is not handling Vijay. It is his take on Vijay which didn't hit the mark. That is not to say Nelson is a bad director. It is his style. Atlee may have done servicable scenes but it does fall short on its characters. It's the first time someone like Vijay has gone Gun Blazing. There is no Dark Humour Bullshit.

As a Vijay fan I agree there is big draw back in film in phase of editing, story continuity (screenplay) and camera work... Also I have a doubt of just to highlight anirudh music editing dept gave space/lag/slow mo... Also really very angry on Jani master (asshole) after watching full arabic Kuthu - just to make step difficult he made the dance not even matching the beats, even when he dances with Vijay the steps are not matching song beats... As I work for Hollywood movies VFX (MPC Bangalore) I was able to see all the defects clearly, even in VFX... As a Tamil audience and Vijay fan and considering Nelson - movie is entertaining with fun... I laughed a lot of times in the whole movie... Cheers

Anything without a good screenplay is a waste of time and unbearable. Valimai was mediocre at best and i was hoping something great from Vijay after the Master which i liked because of sincerity in playing character. Hearing this review my wife who is a big Vijay fan and was waiting for the film will be disappointed. even more.
