- In todays video we go over some of the issues that we have ran into with the now built sti. I wanted to make this video to show you guys that you will run into issues when building an engine and it won’t be perfect. I also wanted to reach out to you guys and see what you guys thought about these issues!

You can check if there's an engine issue by removing the oil fill cap while the engine is running and see if there's any smoke coming out of it. The smoke from the exhaust is most likely just blow by. The rev hang can most likely be fixed by the tuner or a throttle body issue.
For rev hang, check your throttle return spring and your throttle body wire (assuming it’s drive by wire)
Same thing happened to my Fathers 2019 WRX when his throttle body wire got wet
Keeping my fingers crossed for ya, brother.. Its hard to not get discouraged. I know the feeling. I finally achieved a bucket list goal and bought an STI... After having it for a month, and only putting like 600 miles on it, I noticed hella white smoke on start up.. took my oil cap off and hella white smoke from there. Major red flags that some piston/s/ringlands are probably damaged.. it's upsetting but on the other hand I'm ready for a shortblock swap, now I have a real reason to do it.. lol
For the rev hang I had that to. I switched out my ideal control valve gasket it’s super Small rubber gasket it’s located below your top mount interior cooler it’s super easy to switch out it’s 2 10mm bolts, give it a try it worked for me.
For the oil issues, from my experience of breaking in motors I usually before even before driving it, I rev the car between 2k-4k rpm’s for like 15-20 minutes straight, let the rpm drop to 2k and then give a little gas to get to 4k rpm’s and rinse and repeat, then check if your still smoking after that, just how I break my motor in everyone does it differently but this helps the rings set in
I had smoke on start up as well, got air oil separator and it fixed it.
I had an idling problem one time. My RPMs would just start revving high after awhile of driving it. Later on, I finally found out it was carbon build up on my Idle Air Control Valve (IACV)! I just opened it up, ordered a new gasket for it, and cleaned it with Q-Tips and a type of cleaning spray you can find at NAPA or something. Maybe that’s part of it I have no idea it’s just something that happened to me when I had horrible idling problems!
I recently finished my built back in December everything except for the block was done by me. I can confirm the with the motul 10w40 break-in oil the car does smoke more than normal when i first started my car I was worried about it but i noticed that after driving for 2 minutes the smoke will go away. And when i switched to regular oil the smoke stopped. As far as your problems I personally will start by checking those grounds and making sure you don't have any vaccum leaks with a smoke test machine and then to be safe I'll pull the covers and double and triple check timing.
Yeah have javi run some regular diagnostic procedures to start eliminating the more obvious ones, the car might be trying to to keep the revs up either because of too much fuel, too less fuel, or a vacuum issue, also check your timing. Eliminate the easy ones first and I'm sure you will fix it. Just be patient it will all be worth it!
I’m no expert had some similar issues with the rev hang, so one of the issues was actually my MAF once replaced it was better but the other underlying issue I had was my speed sensor, I guess it had gotten damaged or really wet when I had the trans out which attributed to my rev hang bc the vehicle didn’t know what speed I was at and it also through me codes
Hey Hermano car is looking amazing, you may want to perform a protune on the car, you change the injectors that can cause some issues.
The revving up when stopped is probably an intake manifold leak, I would check your tgv and intake manifold gaskets. I just had the same problem with my 04 STI.
Hopefully those cam gears are all properly lined up and seated on the cam pins. Smeedia ran into that problem and had all kind of timing issues.
The smoke is normal. The rings seating are a part of the break in, so sometimes it will burn some oil. As far as starting, I just give mine gas when it hesitates and it will fire up
The rev hang is probably caused by a vacuum source or the fuel pressure regulator. How is your fuel system lines ran? If you're using the stock fuel system lines, get rid of it and do something like a COBB fuel lines setup.
COBB makes a stumble fix kit that's easy to install as well. I hope you can get it sorted out with iAG or just pick up the phone and call COBB. They will have good suggestions as well.
with a engine breaking issue could be something to do with the throttle body on he tune side or a bad TPS or for a really abstract idea could be a cruise control issue/thing the on off throttle defiantly sound like how cruise control can feel. just a couple of ideas hope this helps
The smokes probably from the rings getting situated. Just drive it and enjoy
The clutch in with reving is from your tuner. Mine did the same during break in period
Check ur idle air control (IAC) for rev hang issues
For the rev hang definitely seems like its throttle body or IAC related.
all these issues sound tune related, would check timing to make sure it’s on point, smoke is normal for break in oil
Go back to basics! Check timing is the first thing that popped into my mind as i had a similar issue with my fozzy xt. When i had a stretched timing belt and was having weird timing issues and stuff...... Check for Vaccum leaks which is causing the idle/issues.
Could possibly be that you need to do a idle relearn or throttle body relearn… could possibly be that it’s revving high when shifting or at idle
4:25 LMAO.. I'm on stock suspension and still know that feeling, damn roads in MD are muffed up
Your cruise control was active as you was driving. Wouldn't that cause it to rev hang and hold high revs in gear at traffic lights. As for the oil coming out of exhaust that is just beding in oil it has extra detergents and anti-corrosion properties. As your pistons move up the cylinder wall thay drag a thin layer of oil up with them.as it combustion point at the top it burns that oil off. Normal oil dose the same but you don't see it cos there's not as much chemical's in it. It would be a good idea to just check that your oil pressure is at normal operation usually anywhere between 20-15 psi at idle. I think rev hang can be caused by boost creep too. Hope you get it sorted 🖖
had similar issues, my old 03 wrx sti... MAF sensor caused REV hang and idling issues... but its pretty different Subaru to Subaru but i would start there.,..
I thought rev hang was for break ins so won’t over rev or let starve from fuel. I say two steps. Maybe check wire harness with everything is plugged to your battery. 2. Check bov. My bov did half these issues l.
Do you have an air/fuel ratio gauge? I had to get one when I was tuning my car. The A/R ratio on the accessport doesn't read low enough to see if you're running rich.
Have u tried running a stock Corolla build? Might delete the engine issue
I would watch your fuel trims when you are getting that wild rev hang. It may be getting too much fuel. Plus you have a rich code. As for the intake timing codes could either have issues with the ACVS intake gears ( I always replace those when doing motor rebuild, I've had too many break internally in the past just from removing them lol), issue with the acvs solenoids (maybe too much oil pressure causing them to act up) do you have an oil pressure gauge? Or could even be off on timing and that could be throwing a few things off. If you are smoking oil let me ask, are you running the right oil restrictor for that garrett turbo? Cant remember you had it on in the past but the garretts require a very specific oil feed restrictor fitting. If unsure it could just be a standard restrictor and turbo is getting too much oil. Also are you positive on the injectors you have and what the tuner knows?
What’s the rev hang problem as mine is doing that only in morning after cold start? And only when changing up gears not when stopping
Idk if you fixed the problem or not but the turbo tends to heat up that cruise control box which in return causes it to pull the cruise control throttle cable idk why. I just took the whole cruise control throttle cable and module out under the hood and it’s never happened again… also I’m running a quick release set up to oso it’s not like I ever used it anyway. Lots of slack in the main throttle cable and a cruise control throttle cable delete should get rid of that.
check IACV- idle air control valve, mine did a similar thing its like in limp mode
Has your sti got the idle control valve on top of the throttle body it has a water feed to it I have a 05 wrx and it was sticking on me and it was doing wired stuff like yours like the revs are sticking I tuck it off freed the valve inside it with wd40 now I don’t have any problems
I am almost positive those cam gear codes are from the cam gears not properly being rebuilt/cleaned and assembled. it could also be the avcs harnesses, but i would monitor the count via ap and see if they ramp up evenly
Mine was smoking when I got it back from shop but after they dyno tune it everything went away.. oh and yeah mine also revs a little bit after getting off of gear or going up a gear
When are you doing a video with the whole crew?
Would a good engine map fix some problems? You haven't mapped it right??
Man I’m so glad I got rid of my sti no more problems lol
I think all of those problems will be fix by the tuner
Its Not that easy. The tuner won't tune it unless the car is decent enough to tune.
cam gears are very very sensitive
@@IcySTi you can't just tune your way out of things that require replacement
@@lionl8250 can't see in my comment where i said that lmfao
@@IcySTi my bad smarty pants. I tagged the wrong idiot.
Also, I hope you replaced your cam gears. You're usually supposed to replaced them when swapping engines.
That hard start is probably because of the timing issue or fuel but I am thinking timing
Smoke out the exhaust is normal on new motors until the piston rings seat properly
Rev on gear most likely is the throttle plate is stuck slight open. Check it put.
Take it to bader man
You have some kind of boost leak or turbo leak if your not making boost. Or your tune is not made for what you have installed. That’s what it sounds like to me
The starting issue should be cause by not enough fuel pressure from the fuel pump or if you’re on E85, it’s normal
This could also explain the strange rev hang. Tgv delete if it's been done would also affect cold start.
I think you may have some mechanical issues with the engine that’s why you are getting codes for the CEL
Does the car shut off after idling for a while?
the high idle is y your crush control. take it off you’ll be fine
Hope your tuner isn't the same guy that blew up Wombos car..... Smoke is normal for break in oil.... I wouldn't stress too much.
Those cam gear codes are most likely from cam gears not properly being rebuilt and assembled. Asked my brother about it he's been rebuilding BMW engines for 10 years plus. Also exhaust smoke is normal but hes never heard of it happening for 300 miles. at least not the engines he's rebuilt.
Is there a crank position and is it plugged in… just double check all connections snuggly
It wouldnt run at all if it wasnt plugged in or not working and wouldnt get a tach signal
bro i got 1 of those car if we could get in contact
i could help u but with the small smoke check your turbo return as for the gassing that comes from a intake manifold sensor
Look for revworks and go see them. They have a lot of Subaru and they also build and tune but check them out
I’m pretty sure devin niemela had similar codes and it was for the cam gears themselves.
He changed oil and the problem went away
maybe its needs a tune? or a cruise control issue?
Car definitely needs a tune bro asap
got alot of work to due check grounds vaccum leaks, check out timing
i have rev hang for my 06 impreza too bro idky
I had problems with my sti dying while driving and I fixed it with a new MAF.
Check the MAP Sensor.
Can't wait to see the day that the car doesn't break
Yooooooo check the throttle cable … prolly need losing it a little
Get the battery tested and maybe a new starter I say this cause it shouldn’t take that long to start almost like if it was on e85 I would also reconfirm spark plug gap and timing just to make sure your not off a tooth rotate the motor twice and reconfirm nothing shifted also it’s takes time for the rings to seal on a built block smedia talks about it when we built a 05 sti and his 17 eg swap build
A lot of it sounds tune related. Specially the fuel stuff.
Should of kept it standard at least you get to keep driving it and enjoy the moment...
Maybe a throttle body issue
Neutral switch issue maybe?
Check the cruise control the light is blinking
Subie gang! CEL or bust! You’ll get her running right soon enough! 😎🤞👍
bleed the clutch, my car did that and it was an air bubble by the slave cylinder
why can you not rev higher
Take it back bro. If you paid for it to be rebuilt it should be running right. If not it’s on the mechanic. The shop need to fix it
It's an IAG shortblock engine wasn't rebuilt
Take off the tune and everything will go back to normal and your engine won’t blow.
Definitely shouldn’t be smoke coming from a new engine. Why would oil already be low with such low kms ? Definitely issues with the motor somewhere. I’ve never seen this issue on a new motor in my 25 years of building motors. Do a compression test to start with.
I wonder if hes running the proper oil restrictor for that garrett turbo, if not could be taking in too much oil and burning off excess.
Come on man ! Can’t be broken already
Chill out when you build an engine it’s not easy
@@angelwrx3255 lol Ik man but didn’t think it would need something to quick
Get an evo problem solved
Jk jk love the sti bro 💚
What’s going on with your dccd lol
Sounds like either these
Alternator
Battery
Or not enough fuel? Maybe
Yooo bro 😎
Ditch the Cobb. Get a Haltech and a re tune.
Check the timing belt
Danny where has Hongo been he hasn’t been in the videos for a couple of years 😔
GO buy new MAF sensor, I had similar issues, cleaning did not help, once I installed new one, it was magic...
Take it to lowboost they will have it running right in a day or less
Oil passing the rings
What happened to the whole crew 😭
Most of those things are to do with the tune. Needs pro tune.(
White smoke, turbo dying...
Idle sensor
Time for a different manufacturer my guy.
Something is not right with that car and you should get that checked out asap
Hi
Hit up bader built!
10 to 1 all the high revving and idle issues you are having is iacv i will bet the house on it
This is a timing bomb 🤣 sad to say but you going to have problem the rest of the year with that car…
Not the title I wanted to see dude :/
use 20w-50, ur gona thank me later
i have seen the place he got the engine done. dude seems like a happy go lucky mechanic. this is why you pay more to get a job done at a reputable place. poor man pays double
