    Stuff like this keeps bringing me back. A hyperspacing station? Got sabotaged by players right before jump? And wound up in the middle of nowhere, completely lost? And was randomly found by a deep space explorer a month later, out of 100 billion possible locations?
    No other game could do this.

    • @jamesvan2201
      @jamesvan2201 6 років тому +60

      I'm just awestruck that actual players are able to effect the game this much. Then it begs the questions: who did it? Why did they do it? Was it planned? We're they contracted by fdev to do so? Or was it just some random act that people wanted to do for the hell of it? Was it fdev themselves?

    • @fg09403

      Call me a cynic, but I don't believe for a second that this was actually done by players. compared to the kind of amazing inter-player politics, galaxy shaping, and events that something like eve can kick up or the giant, open wars I've been able to start in the X series, this game feels kind of lifeless and static in a way.

    • @ajet0452
      @ajet0452 5 років тому +28

      Dude there was no way for players to effect this in anyway. Frontier would have to have programmed it into the game that thargoid tech would fuck with the hyperspace jump even though this was the first time a space station would have ever jumped. This was a scripted event, granted its really cool but it's scripted. Most things in this game can barely be influenced and most things happen when Frontiers puts in a new script like when they finally added Thargoids.

    I haven't been to Colonia for some months, but each time I get there I just think 'what now?' and end up leaving to continue my exploration trip. I think a lot of us go there the first time expecting to see something, and basically finding not much. It's just a glorified service station convenient for the trip to Beagle.

      Kelfaur I hope that the Q4 update may change that situation. That is one of the issues we face in Elite, Frontier would love for us to explore this huge galaxy but currently there's no reason. For exploration to really matter in a game there have to be things to find and at the minute in Elites galaxy there's none. From the hints we got at Lavecon, it sounded like (hopefully) they're going to fill the galaxy out more. The furthest I've been is 5000lyr for the Engineer unlock so I'm waiting for Q4 for more to do, more to see.

      One of the things it has is that it's small and cozy. The Colonia bubble is only 100ly across... everything is very close, and if you spend some time there you get to know all the corners and sights (like the plateau the Bone Yard is on or the ice mountains around Concordia Hub). The Sol bubble is huge, I've spent time in a couple corners getting to know the neighbourhood (mostly during things like community goals), but then I move on... and a lot of the time, I just forget to make room for the next neighbourhood. So I only have a mental sketch of that bubble... a handful of key systems and how they relate to each other. With Colonia, that really hasn't happened... I know it wall to wall and floor to ceiling.

      It would take me about 2 weeks of "effort" on the PC to do the jumps to Colonia. There would need to be some different content or different missions with different gameplay to make it worth my while. Otherwise, as you say, "so what now?"

    • @Bananafangs_
      @Bananafangs_ 6 років тому +5

      I think they could do a lot more with the "development" of Colonia. Flying out there is neat and cool, but I'd really love to be able to actually make a difference in the development of a distant human colony.

  • @Tobascodagama

    The thing that makes Colonia really nice for explorers, in addition to the star density, is that you don't have to go very far at all to hit a lot of Unexplored systems. It's a long haul to get there, but once you do you can break your exploration down into a lot of short jaunts.

    Oh come on Obsidian Ant - not even a single word about how beaten up the station was when it arrived to its current place and how the "initial pioneers" were supplying stuff from the bubble? I'd call that important part of the lore.
    BTW I still don't know why people can't hire CMDRs to transfer ships. It'd be a good way to try out different ships, make decent money for newer players due to the distance to Colonia, and would open up a whole new reputation based career.

    • @exarkun4084

      ColemanV: what would stop them from just taking it? Sure, you could implement something where they had to "pay" for the ship upon pick up but you'd never get the time back you spent on engineering. Good idea, I just see no way to implement it without HUGE risk.

    I know this is controversial, but I wish there was a lore-plausible fast travel between Colonia and the Bubble _after_ you make your first visit the "old-fasioned" way. Jaques 'fast-traveled' there, after all. The theory could be that you need to bring a quantum-entangled "anchor" to Colonia, and once it's there, then you can use, with Jaques' help, to make a 'super' hyperjump between Colonia and some special location in the Bubble - perhaps the location from where Jaques made his original jump.
    I say this because I indeed visited Colonia and thought it was a very interesting place, but I got homesick and went back to the Bubble. I'd like to visit Colonia from time-to-time in a variety of ships, but I'm not ready to make that incredibly long (as in time-commitment) trip again.

    • @dadski4364
      @dadski4364 6 років тому +5

      How is NMS engaging exactly. You don't need to move at all. Teleporters are everywhere, money is easy and there's only 7 planets total. You seen all 7 of them you completed the game as there's absolutely nothing else. The planets don't have orbits or rotations, every space station is exactly the same, multiplayer is at a bare bare bare minimum (4 players max). You actually do not need a ship or space travel in NMS at all, just use teleporters everywhere. Sure you can follow atlas, but trust me it's underwhelming as all it does is you get to a new galaxy which has the exact same 7 planets as the other ones

    I remember my first time going to Colonia. I was in an Imperial Courier made specifically for exploration and i wanted to head to Sag A. With colonia being close to it, i stopped off there first before heading out. When I got home from that trip, I bought my Anaconda! I had to sell my Python i’ve been working up for to make this trip and it came back in dividends.

  • @Ender424
    @Ender424 6 років тому +5

    Perfect timing for me. I have spent last few months trying to get to Sag A and recently found out about Colonia. I love exploring and the sights are beautiful but just jumping from system to system gets old fast and the thought of how long it would take to get back to the bubble made me open a separate account.
    I had no idea Colonia was a sort of 'mini-bubble' and have decided to stay here. It offers both the enjoyment of doing missions and exploring near the core. With the new shipyards available the only thing missing is ability to get faction ships. I'll still have to keep my separate account if I want to get an Imperial Courier but other than than it's Colonia life for me!

      Leon Ettey: it's not the time...it's the cost. It around 1.5 billion per fully outfitted large ship. Around a billion for mediums. One thing you could try is wait for fd to fix the fsd boosters. I plan on gutting my combat cutter, intalling the booster and heading to Colonia. Cutter with nothing in it (amfu weighs nothing) and a fully engineered fsd has a decent range. It's significantly cheaper to ship modules.

    Colonia Dream has been my permanent home for well over a year. I had only been flying for a couple of months, having acquired enough credits to get a DBX and reasonably outfit it for exploring (I didn't like the way engineering worked at the time, so I didn't bother) and set course for Colonia. 3 months later I finally arrived with a healthy cache of cartographic data to sell. After about 2 more months of exploring the Colonia bubble I settled at Colonia Dream since it had one of the largest shipyards and module selection. My fleet of 6 ships is parked there. I just love the space there much better than in the Core Systems. I recently made a trip back to the Core to do some engineering on my Anaconda and pick up a Chieftain and engineered that. I just got back to Colonia Dream and had the Chieftain shipped to me (sheesh, that was expensive). I don't see myself going back to the Core for quite some time.

    There needs to be a system for mass transference of ships there, like a mega ship which jumps back and forth on server ticks, either immediately or in several jumps over a few weeks. There could definitely be some good exploration gameplay based around a system which does 2 jumps to get there.

    • @cetifoxproductions
      @cetifoxproductions 6 років тому

      Well, I don't think we need to have mass transfers, and I'm okay with the wait time being as long as it is. I DO wish, however, the cost of transferring a given ship was more in line with the re-buy cost. Right now the cost to transfer is a lot more expensive than the ships are actually worth.

    Recently reached colonia about a week ago, didn't see much of the fuss, more like "glad I got this out of the way" so I didn't stick around. About 5k from the centre, once I do that. I don't know, don't think I have the endurance or jump range for a trip to Beagle. I have tons of data to sell, but don't want to see it at colonia. May be time to head home after that, possibly a little break.

    I thought I'd have to go to Colonia to engineer my beam lasers with Brandon, then unlocked the creepy engineer thinking great won't have to go there. Got 25 occupied escape pods and plotted him on the map, his system, Los? Was also in Colonia lol. Thought screw that, ended up then unlocking that Broo guy and getting his stupid tea. You can get escape pods near Colonia though apparently if you're gonna use the Etienne engineer up there, Luchainde I believe is the system with cargo vessels for rescue.

    Please consider doing a video to bring newer people up to date... I have watched a ton of your stuff of late and then I look at the date and it's like 2015 or 2016 - I have no idea what current anything is important or going on in the game, perhaps there is not much - It's one of my biggest complaints, if it was not for your video's I would not even know there is any story other than meaningless local faction stuff which I don't really even read anymore - scan this on a planet for faction x, get the same dozen messages that even when read don't get rid of you inbox showing unread messages... so I ignore them now - the game sorely lacks putting any story in players faces, wish they would at least create side type missions that had some video characters that you can care about and and clear goals even if they did not pay much just to engage with something, the universe they built is begging for it.

      If you have watched a ton of his stuff you'd know he does a series specifically to update on current Elite Events :P It's named after the current Elite year so right now the series name is 3304, last year it was called 3303, next year it'll be called 3305. It' on his channel jsut search for '3304' in his channel or look at his uploaded video and every couple of video is an elite update video

    I went ages ago and was really underwhelmed. I recently visited Sag A and had the option of nipping back to Colonia to cash in exploration data. I chose the long haul back to the bubble instead. Why bother with Colonia? The only reason to go is to say ‘I went there’. I can think of no good reason to return. Maybe if there were regular trips on one of those ships that you can dock on.....maybe

    In a game without portals, a taxi service would make such areas accessible to casual players. Just make it expensive as a controlling factor and limited to previously visited locations, except for special sites like Colonia. Charge a few hundred million for a ride there on a megaship, which, by their nature, should move around. it's a natural development.

    Maybe Colonia can have a dedicated mega ship for ferrying players from the bubble to Colonia? It can make two trips per month, once from the bubble to Colonia and once from Colonia to the bubble.
    The trip is pretty long and tedious, while it was kind of exciting to get to Colonia for the first time, the journey home, is not very interesting.

    • @vib80
      @vib80 6 років тому

      Yep... it's about 1000ly down, so it sits right on top of the lower western neutron field. Which means that you can get out to things quite fast from there... those two nebula off to the side (Peng and Clover), IIRC they were about 8 jumps from Magellan in AspX.
      I'm going back now... the journey to Kashyapa was really quick by staying low. The next leg was to the House of Hades, a huge nebula about 1200ly down, so again, really fast travel. And most of the leg to Sacaqawea (I always like to stop there... it needs a shipyard and outfitting) is also going to be really fast because I'm staying low and only moving up at the end.

    I left to the bubble in January 2018. Made it to the center on June 2018.
    Colonia to the Center was one Scarry trip because I didn't knew at the time that using the Nutron Star Route damage your FSD. Made it to the black hole with 70% FSD damage. Now I'm taking the regular Route. 240 jumps to Colonia with 70% FSD damage. 😒

    I stopped there to unload my Exploration data on my way to Sag. A and I'm glad it's there because right after I reached the center of the galaxy my hull got down to 2% flying around the black hole , I was scared to death cause I didn't want to lose my exploration data but I did make it to Jacques station and docked safely and turned in my data, boy that was a close call. But I will return to the center again now that I know what Not to do when I'm in the center of the galaxy and I'm sure after I make it back to the bubble I should finally be Elite in Exploration 😀 if only there was another station on the other side of the galaxy, that would be awesome.
